Studying abroad from America. I was on George St. looking for some good Chinese food and boy did I pick the right spot. Using Yelp to make my decision was a smart move. Not only was the food AHMAAAZZING, the spices and flavors were incredible. Not to mention the presentation was nothing short of beautiful. Oh...and did I mention it took longer to get someone to take our order for the food to come out...yea, you heard me right, our food came out of the kitchen in less than 15 minutes.. The Chef's Gallery is very aptly named; the food looks good when it arrives at your table, but that's about it. We've been to this restaurant twice, and both times, the food has been very disappointing. Add to the fact that it cost more than most Asian restaurants, I have to place the Chef's Gallery in the category of "places to take your non-Asian friends who are very reluctant to try Asian food". The flavors are bland, the food comes out a bit cold by the time they're brought out, and the dishes are very ordinary if you've been to any number of Chinese restaurants. Love the place. Celebrated my Birthday here with the family. Food was really awesome and they have an open kitchen that you can see their chefs preparing your food. Noodles were hand-made and was so amazed by the chef doing it. Place was packed have to wait for like 10min to be seated. No longer a take away shop, my chefs gallery has been revamped to a full blown chefs gallery. Kind of. I never had the opportunity to eat at my chefs gallery. I tried a few times, but whenever I went they were out of at least 2 or 3 of the 6 chapas on offer. For that reason, I was surprised to see chapas absent from the new menu. I went during the second week of opening and the place was chaotic. They had already marked my booking off when I arrived. In that I was 5 minutes early and they thought I was already eating. I assured them I was not, and they rushed to find me a spot while I waited in the massive crowd outside. The new location is essentially part of the MET Centre food court (but down a level), so its hard to escape that food court feeling. They've done what they can to make it more like a "real" restaurant, but I wouldn't suggest it for a first date. Other than the lack of chapas, the menu is pretty similar to the George Street location. I really enjoyed the wagyu tataki (deliciously spicy) and the green beans with pork. With so much to try on the menu I'll likely switch it up from the pork belly (a tad fatty for my liking), chicken chili basil dumplings, and the salt and pepper calamari. Although they were all tasty, I have some major FOMO about the rest of the menu. I regret not ordering the pork mini burgers this time, as they were one of the stand outs at the George Street location. Maybe my expectations were way too high after all the hype? The restaurant isn't styled like your typical Chinese joint; the inside is minimalistic, modern, and hip. The ambiance is nice for group gatherings and for catching up. It's loud in here, so you don't need to worry about your inappropriate conversations being overheard or eavesdropped on. ;) Our group of 4 was just barely able to snag a table for an early dinner at around 5pm. When we finished our meal, there were several groups outside mulling around waiting for a table. That's how busy they get! The menu boasts a lot of different items to choose from, including noodle dishes, rice dishes, various dim sum style offerings, to sweets. We decided to order a bunch of different items and share so we could try the most different things: -Cucumber Salad in Chili Oil: Bland but spicy with no real flavor besides HOT. Didn't taste like the cucumbers were marinated long enough. Would skip this unless you like things that are doused in chili oil and only chili oil. -Salt and Pepper Chef's Egg and Spinach Tofu: This was one of the hits of the night. The simple salt and pepper flavor really hits the spot when combined with the soft texture of the tofu. Plus it's totally fried. Fried is good. -Macanese Pork Filet Sliders: These were my second favorite of the meal. The buns were nice and soft and I liked the piggy overload of the pork floss combined with the perfectly seasoned pork filet. -Random Noodle Dish: I wish I could remember the name of this dish or what it even looked like, but it must have offended me so bad that I subconsciously blocked it out of my memory. The bowl was tiny, the noodles sucked, and the spicy broth lacked any flavor. We also ordered a veggie dish, a fried noodle dish and an order of fried rice, but none of these really stood out (or offended me) as much as those I had listed above. The fried rice was good, but not particularly special. We ordered a fried noodle dish which had good flavor but was a hot mess and extremely difficult to separate as all the noodles had congealed together in a gigantic noodle puck. Meh. I must be missing something, but I don't see what the hype is about this place. I might be raving if everything was maybe $5-7 cheaper, but at the prices they charge and for the quality of the food they give, I'd keep my dining options open and look elsewhere for Chinese food! read more

If you're not sure what to get I'd recommend the homemade noodles, preferably dry noodle plates with pork. Get a side of the Chinese roti with the shredded lamb as well. If you don't like this, then I'm convinced you hate food :) read more

The initial Service was extremely slow. We waited for 13 minutes before someone came to ask us if we'd like a drink. Once we ordered, our food came out pretty fast. We ordered wine, oxtails, garlic chicken, fried noodles, pork buns and duck fried rice. Although all of the flavors for the food were listed as different, all of the tastes were similar. Went to dinner last night because we walked by this place the first night we were here and looked like it had lots of potential. We decided to come for dinner after scoping out a lot of different places, but in the end settled here. First negative thing about this place was that when we asked for our table, they tried to sit us in a small table that was hidden behind a wall, where the only view was the cash register and the exit door. These people need to understand that people come to eat at restaurants for atmosphere as well. We asked for a different table, lots of open tables in the center, but they refused to sit us there because it was reserved for parties of 4 or more (in the end, the tables sat empty the entire time we were there, until it was closing time as a matter of fact). We ended up sitting at a bar like seating area where we can see the meals being made (we only got a view of the dishwasher...) The service was horrible. Not one smile, hurry to take our orders and just get going, their tone and body language was just straight up shitty (no better way to describe it). We ordered the veggie dumplings, it was very bland and the wrap was so sticky, my chopsticks didn't come off of it without a lot of effort from me. I ordered dumpling noodles. The broth and noodles were very bland, but I will say that the shrimp dumplings that were in the soup was delicious. We ordered dessert at the beginning of the meal, the waitress said she wouldn't start it until we told them we were ready. Having a very unsatisfactory experience, I told them that we were full and just wanted to leave without dessert and they made some kind of argument that maybe it wouldn't be possible to cancel it (although, they didn't make the thing yet!). They cancelled the ordered without much trouble, but it made me mad that they put up somewhat of a fuss. I'm loving Sydney and have been to some awesome places to eat, but this is the worst so far. Stay clear, these people are no longer 'hungry' to attract customers, I'm disappointed that the Yelp rating was actually as high as it was. read more

I've been a few times but this time, I really enjoyed the experience. The food is always good but the service backs it up as well. We had the mix dumpling dish, prawn noodles dish, peking duck pancakes (yum), salt and pepper calamari (This was one the best I've eaten), and the cutest dessert ever with the wafer house. The Noodles definitely saved the day. I came here with my mother to have lunch and I didn't really have any high expectations (We have dined here frequently and have found that it was a solid food option). I was pleasantly surprised when I changed my normal order to a vegetarian noodle option (I believe it was a spinach noodle option) and it was amazing. I know the name doesn't sound appetizing and the picture is questionable but it was really good. My mother choose the typical chili wonton noodle option and she liked it despite again complaining that it was too salty. I think the noodles here really make the menu more then just a "ehh..okay" typical hyped up restaurant. It probably is also one of the only authentic menu items. I'm still a fan of the noodles here. Granted getting seated near the toilets is a bit crappy, however the place was pumping and we didn't have a booking, so can't really complain tooooo loudly. I had the dan dan noodles with vegetables in the broth and it was rather spicy. It came with some BBQ pork ribs that my partner devoured. He got the duck noodles and said that he was really impressed with the way they did the duck and it was really yummy. We had some of their fruity mocktails and some lamb rolls that were in some kind of filo pastry? Or something. Not sure, it was flaky and delicious. Either way, this place is still winning in my books. I can't wait to come back and try some other noodles that I haven't tasted yet. read more

Sit and watch a group of experts hand make your noodles and order from the extensive menu. An experience in food and entertainment as you watch large balls of dough get turned into the most delicious noodles. I will continue going back to Chef's Gallery until I have made my way through the entire menu, and then some. Peking duck in roti, snowflake chicken and at least one noodle dish is a necessity. I'm reviewing as a vegetarian, so take with however many grains of salt you want. This place was fine, but noting to write home about. We had planned to go to Sydney Madang, but then realized there was almost zero for me to eat on the menu, so ended up here. Given that we had 5 people and this was a last-minute fall-back, it worked out well; but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back. I had the seaweed salad (odd texture, but fine), the dry-fried green beans without pork (probably the best thing; I snarfed them down), some noodle-and-mushroom dish (kind of bland; I coated it in the chili-flake sauce at the table, and enjoyed that), and the egg-and-scallion roti (which felt sort of breakfast-y). All fine; nothing exceptional. My friends who ordered the chunks of Wagyu beef, the prawns, and the slab of pork (I think) loved all of it. Me, my meal was just meh. Also, nothing I had was spicy. Always hoping for that in a good Chinese restaurant. At least they had a little jar of spicy stuff for you to self-medicate with. read more

As far as Chinese food goes, Chef's Gallery is a great blend of traditional and modern cuisine. The food incorporates familiar Asian flavors while reworking the conventional presentation of its dishes - Whether it is in the form of sliders, spinach noodles, or wrapped up in a Chinese pancake - It doesn't give off the air that it's trying too hard to be unlike many other 'fusion' restaurants. It has its way in maintaining the authentic, traditional, & original flavour of the Asian dish but elevated it by modern twist & presentation. I can put my finger on it but the fried spinach (I think) was the best one I've ever tasted. This place is definitely for share so that you get to taste and make the most of the available menu. I wasn't a huge fan of this place when it first opened but they've revamped their menu recently and there are lots of interesting new dishes on it. We came here a few days ago and had the roast duck with lychee sauce, a dim sum platter with various dumplings on it, and the 'piggy and bunny garden' dessert to share (can't remember the actual name of the dessert but refer to my second pic for cuteness overload). The duck went well with the lychees, although the dish probably would have tasted better with less sauce. The dim sum platter was pretty average - I don't think yum cha fare is their forte. The adorable piggy/bunny dessert looked like one of those Play School dioramas Noni and John used to bring out for storybook time. In fact it could very well have been a diorama for Animal Farm, except I don't recall rabbits playing any great part in Orwell's book. I loved the piggy buns (filled with warm black sesame paste) with the green tea and black sesame ice creams, but the rest of the plate was just sugar and desiccated coconut. The bunnies were flavourless marshmallows. Not worth the $20 price tag, IMO. I've had the Chinese roti with cheese and mushrooms on a previous occasion and it was very tasty and fluffy, but really, really oily. read more

Weeeellllcome! Pork buns you'd crawl through broken glass and roll in salt to get too. Fantastic option for a cheap lunch in the City with several options for ten bucks. Quite popular so you'll want to rock up at an odd time for example 1145 or 1242 to ensure you avoid the suit rush exactly on the hour as they pile out of offices in the surrounding blocks. I can highly recommend the BBQ Delights, they have a good wine list also worth a look, would of scored more highly had the service been tighter, also the restaurant seems cluttered by the till with napkins and such like piled up. Food is fantastic and of course this is what counts the most read more

All I can say really is yum!!! I have spent the past 3 years staring at this restaurant from across the street where my bus stop to Hills is, wondering at the long lines of people and their terrible LED sign out the front that never syncs colours. Wondering whether I should try it out. Finally one day when my friends were complaining about how we always go to the same places I suggested we go on a weeknight to avoid the crowds. We turned up at 6pm on a Tuesday night and it was already packed, they asked us if we had a reservation and we said no so we were asked to wait on the bench inside the door. Not for long though, about 10 minutes later we were shown to a seat on the bench in front of the kitchens. A nice spot for winter but as it was a warm summers day it did get a tad hot. Despite that the food that came out was delicious!! Handmade duck noodles, dumplings, fresh greens, porks buns and more dumplings topped off with mango pancakes for dessert (obviously). I need to come back and try more noodles and more dumplings because there was just too much on the menu that looked good and not enough time or room in my stomach to eat it all. The downside of this restaurant is the service. It took them forever to come by and take our drinks order and then even longer to come by to take our food and dessert order. It's not really a surprise because they are so busy and constantly turning around customers. Once the food was ordered however it came out promptly...there's no waiting around for food here (probably they want to get you out quickly to accommodate the line of people outside). read more

Great food and I loved the open kitchen! We sat right in front of the glass and the service was great.

Set right in the heart of the city, this restaurant is magnetic - drawing people in who want a little taste of Chinese heaven. Their large glass window panes allow people to peer in and marvel at the delicate dumplings and buns nestling in their baskets. Be warned - this restaurant is popular, so much so that they stop taking bookings after 5.30 pm. I'd say that booking ahead is essential for this kind of restaurant, so you need to plan a bit before if you want to eat here. Otherwise, you may well join the throngs of people who wait outside for hours just to get a table. Not ideal when stomachs are already rumbling. So anyway, on to the food. Both during the day and at night, Chef's Gallery offers traditional yum cha - meals on wheels is how it could otherwise (less elegantly) be described. Trolleys are wheeled around laden with dumplings, buns and other Chinese delicious delicacies. All you need to do is point at what you like the look of, and it's yours. This type of dining works especially well when you have some real Chinese food experts in the group, as you're more likely to veer away from the familiar into the unknown. Of course, the dumplings are deliciously delicate morsels. They also have a selection of sweets, which are interesting because they are less commonly associated with China. The egg tarts are especially delicious, but what makes the meal are the tiny little pig sesame buns; shaped like little round piggy faces that look almost too cute to eat. These were my favourite and I'd go back just for them. They offer steamed, pan-fried, baked and healthy (cooked in very little oil) dim sim that will leave you completely boggled by the amount of choice. Come here with an appetite so you can try as much as possible. You really can't go wrong with anything from the menu at Chef's Gallery. It is exquisitely presented, delicately cooked and very, very fresh. My only criticism is that their mini pork burger is too greasy. Perhaps it'd be better if they stick to what they know and don't pander to Western tastes. People come here for great Chinese, not burgers. read more

In reply to Marie's review on comparing Chef's Gallery with Din Tai Feng, I would say these two aren't quite the same in the approaching style. The first impression I got from Din Tai Feng is a fast paced, traditional dumpling house. Despite the fact that I am a huge fan of Din Tai Feng (check out my 5star review on Din Tai Feng), I wouldn't find myself as comfortable there as I would in Chef's Gallery, simply because of the crowd that makes me feel sorry for sitting too long. (Like how you would feel like sitting at a self-served noodle bar in China Town) But entering to Chef's Gallery, you would find a neat and modern interior that really gets your wow (doesn't disappoint the title; 'Gallery') and the classiness as you hear all the waitstaffs stand and say together 'nihao(hello)'. From this point, you are already aware that this restaurant has really targeted more on foreigners (They would've said 'huanying guanglin(Welcome customer)' which is more of a common & respective phrase used in local Chinese restaurant), and a picture dominant menu style further confirms my point. Sitting at a long island style bar literally facing the chef over the glass, I find the purpose of the 'showroom' more for entertainment, in comparison to Din Tai Feng's purpose on featuring the hygiene level. Naming their cocktails with commonly known Chinese movie titles (e.g. 'Mao's Last Dancer', 'crouching tiger hidden dragon'), it remind me once more that they wish appeal familiar to non-Chinese speaking customers, and a relatively small food portion also go out of the traditional Chinese restaurant way to appeal more western/european. So how do I actually find this modern Chinese restaurant? Superb. If you have seen and have tried the piggy faces, I am sure you would totally agree with me just with their appearance. They have done a good job in turning Chinese food into a next level up. This place is where I would take my customers or first timers for a decent Chinese and it is rather a shame that this place isn't all too popular just yet. read more

I feel like I am back in NYC going to a large, hip restuarant in a bustling CBD. Tucked behind the KFC on Bathurst St, you would miss it if you were walking along George St, but once you get onto Bathurst, you will not miss the huge CHEFS GALLERY in lighted letters in the display. Long lines, loud and busy chatter is a clear indication of how damn good this restuarant is. The dumplings in the spice sauce is my all time favourite along with the noodles, hand made with love and finally, the trademark dessert of the sesame buns that come in an adorable pair of piggies, one with a bow. Come in and chill, take in the atmosphere and bask in the chefs that handmake and cook the noodles in the huge window display. read more

If you are looking for Asian food you have come to the place. This restaurant has a large menu that basically has everything you might want from dim sum to noodles to main courses to rice dishes. Plus the menu has pictures of every item. Alcohol list was not impressive but the food quality was outstanding. We of course had to order everything so we got some dim sum spicy pork and prawn dumplings. For our main course we got duck and noddles and beef and wide noodles and prawn fried rice. This meal wasn't complete with our getting the pig dumplings for dessert. I can't exactly tell you what the filling was but I think it was some sort of sweet sesame seed. This place was busy on a Tuesday night so you can definitely tell it was a hot spot. Food is a bit pricy but overall good quality. read more

Having been to the one in the city, I expected the same quality but I was greatly disappointed. The staff were rather hopeless as they couldn't manage the overflow of patrons waiting and the service was quite inefficient. I'll give it 4 stars and I'll go back and try some other stuff and update my review. I only had the lamb and roti rolls with cummin sauce. They were a bit dry. There actually wasn't any sauce. And I shoulda had the Peking Duck with roti and hoisin sauce. G T G is right - the roti was oily. But its not fair to criticise this place because I had already had lunch somewhere else and I was still hungry but not enough to try more than one dish. I watched the guy make noodles and the lady make my roti. Fascinating. My criticism is that it doesn't seem to know what it is. Its not Chinese, not Malaysian, and not, ummm, not something else that doesn't immediately spring to mind. I remember it had a competition to restyle the menu. We were asked to submit dishes to include on the new menu. I thought that was the job of the restaurant, but nevertheless I did suggest Din Tai Fung Xiao Long Bay dumplings. I didn't win anything. Makes sense to give the punters what they want I suppose, but it has to be perfect in this town because there is authentic Malay, Chinese, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Sichuan, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Thai, Japanese, Laotian, and Nonya, all within a stones throw. I'll go back and try some more stuff 'cos there are some Yelp reviews from people who know their stuff on this place, and theres a lot to try. Update 3 September 2014. Had a cholesterol test having starved for a day and a half. This place was the closest place to my Dr's and as I would have eaten the crutch out of a dead donkey I went in. They dont actually serve crutches of any description, but they do serve Peking Duck wrapped in roti. And it is good. 4 stars. Roti still a bit oily. But good. read more
