Living in a city that offers hundreds of different Hispanic cuisines, it can be difficult in finding that diamond amust such a rut. CHELAS TACOS may be one of the best places for tacos of any kind! The egg was moist and the bacon was flavorful. And the Al Pastor? HOLY SMOKES - one of the best prepared pork I've had in ages! The only critique was that the tables weren't totally clean and their scratch made salsa had an almost sweet tang to it? Definitely not my cup of tea for tacos sauces but my gf definitely enjoyed it! Stopped here after a day at the Witte Museum. I've been to the food truck before, long ago when it was parked on the corner of UTSA blvd. And Utex blvd. The restaurant was a bit busy at 11am on a Saturday but we were greeted right away and the line to order went by quickly. I didn't know what I wanted but took their suggestion of Cilantro Chicken plate and W O W! It was amazing, super juicy and full of flavor! The prices weren't bad either! I don't believe there is ANY correlation between the two whatsoever. I'm weird like that. My go-to at Chela's? The shrimp taco on corn. Plump & satisfying accompanied with thin slices of grilled sweet red onion, white onion, green bell pepper, and whatever other flavorful goodness is incorporated within this luscious mix. I've tried other tacos they offer like the gringas, carnita, asada, & barbacoa but the tacos de camaron are my staple. Service has always been friendly and the prices are fair for the amount you get (not to mention the full on flavor that's included). read more

Chela's Tacos needs a standing ovation especially with the delicious-ness that comes from this tiny red food truck that sits on UTSA Blvd. The flavors that come from these tacos are simply amazing and the combinations of ingredients are brilliantly used to compliment each other. A huge downside would have to be how greasy some of the tacos were, definitely prevented it from getting 5 stars. ***This is a SUBJECTIVE review by an individual from the northern states and unaccustomed to authentic Mexican food. ***I am also aware that my opinion of Chela's Tacos is in the minority and that MOST people disagree with me and consider Chela's Tacos to be very good. ______________________________________ I so wanted to like this little taco truck but after eating their tacos pastor and pork y salsa verde, I knew it was not to be. The tacos pastor had no consistency to them. They were completely dried out cubes of meat. Chela's had attempted to reconstitute them in whatever sauce they threw on it but the failed miserably. These were truly the worst tacos pastor I have had. I also tried the pork y salsa very taco and found the pork to be completely bland. Wow, pork is naturally flavorful so it must have been a chore to boil all the taste out of it. Some of the college kids were getting the breakfast tacos and I think this may very well be where Chela's shines. If, and that's a BIG "if" I try Chela's again, I will go early and try a breakfast taco. One positive note is their tortillas. They appear to be homemade and then finished on the flattop. There was nothing wrong with how hot the food came out! Oh, one last thing, and this might be the northern United States gringo in me, but where's the cheese, lettuce, and tomato? Reviewing: Shrimp Taco and Chicken Cilantro Taco (not recommend) First of all, this food truck is in a good area because it's near UTSA and at The Block with plenty of other trucks around so there's a great atmosphere. Secondly, the people working at the truck are really friendly. But honestly, those are the only two things going for this place. FOOD: First of all, the tortillas are no good. They do not taste home made and have the equivalence of a very cheap, stale grocery store bought tortilla. My two flour tortillas for my tacos came out hard and crispy in not a good way. Moving on, the shrimp in the SHRIMP TACO also did not taste fresh and some of them looked like old shrimp dried out. Lastly, I heard many good things about the CHICKEN CILANTRO and was really excited to try it, but reality didn't meet expectations. Honestly the cilantro sauce was pretty good but the chicken was so dry underneath that I couldn't even appreciate the sauce. The red sauce on the side was also very watery, but the green sauce did have a better spicy kick. PRICE: I paid $8 for two tacos. This truck has good reviews so I don't know whether I ordered wrong or they were having an off day, but my experience was sadly not very good. read more

Getting through their menu one taco at a time... I would pass by the red trailer when it was located on Utex but never stopped. Now they have relocated to the parking lot of the Roadrunner Store which makes it convenient and safe to park and get off. I've been here 3 times in the past 5 days!! So far I've tried the Cochinita Pibil Yucatan (not for the faint- very spicy), Carnitas Michoacan Taco (should have put some salsa on here but wanted to taste the flavor since it was my first time but it did need some moisture), and the Chicken Cilantro (very tasty and smelled wonderful). All three tacos were priced at $2.75. They have a chalkboard with Specials listed but the price appears to be the same. They also have regular breakfast tacos like potato & egg and bean & cheese but I wanted to try their signature tacos. Service is prompt and the owner is very nice and conversational. If you see a line don't be discouraged they get the line down fast and that's just how good their tacos are! They keep their location updated on their website so check that before heading out. When I go to The Block, Chela's Tacos is the only food truck I stop at. I've tried a bit of everything from the tacos to nachos, it's pretty good. My friend told me I should try this place, and I'm sure glad I listened to her. This little red taco truck is on the corner of UTEX and UTSA and pumps out some of the freshest and tastiest tacos. Apparently they're only open till 4pm and they're closed on Sundays. But this truck has a wide range of breakfast tacos and specialty tacos. I tried their "chicken al cilantro" which was delicious - warm fresh tortilla topped with loads of tender chicken meat stewed in a cilantro cream sauce. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Whoa! Surprisingly delicious! I ordered two tacos for breakfast- a conchinita pibil tacoi and a chicken mole taco. They had about seven tacos available, none of which were the ones written up in the Express News article they proudly have posted in the window of their trailer. I took the tacos to go, since there was nowhere to eat there. I got to campus, and found the salsa included for the conchinita pibil to be a red sauce- delightfully spicy. It had a thick consistency, and was delicious when paired with the pibil. The chicken mole taco was amply stuffed, and wonderful! The mole had all the fixin's that other places often miss- the sesame seeds, the finely diced onions. The mole was light, and nuanced. Yum! They could have included a bit more napkins- I tend to make a mess when I eat. The lime slice included in the to go bag was a nice touch! Chela's tacos makes the best tacos I've ever had, which means a lot coming from a die hard taco fan. Salsas can make or break a Mexican food vendor, in my opinion, and this is no exception in Chela's case. Both the red and green salsas are exquisite. I usually order the carne asada taco, and my girlfriend usually gets the shrimp taco. Both are exceptional. Their breakfast tacos are also a delight, and very reasonably priced. There have been weeks when I ate here 3 or 4 times and never got sick of it. Chela's really deserves a great star rating, so I feel the need to address the 2 star reviews I've seen. Chris, I read all of your review in complete disbelief, wondering if you had somehow tried Chela's on an off day (which I don't think exists). But then I read the last part of your review where you express desire for cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes on the tacos, and it hit me, you just have a very unsophisticated palate. My body/belly is thankful for getting what it deserves, food-wise, 5 years after leaving Mexico!!! I've been on a mission trying to find anything resembling authetic "tacos mañaneros", it's hard due to the type of meat over here in the states and the condiments are hard to manage... this little red truck was a HUGE surprise!!! These tacos are the real deal. Guero and Chela are hard at work serving up some of the best tacos I have ever had. And after living in Mexico four five years, I have had my fair share of these beauties. The cochinita pibil is perhaps my fave, but every single taco they put out will amaze you. It's great fun to hang around the taco truck and visit with the customers as there is an eclectic mix of people who love the food and you will feel right at home. The appreciation for what Chela and Guero do is palpable and they really know and love their customers... This review does come with a warning, however...every time I go, I swear I am only going to eat two tacos, but end up putting away three. We were in the middle of buying a new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid from Ted at Red McCombs which turned out to be a great car and sold to us by a knowledgable and helpful salesperson, when it was getting close to lunch. Looked at Yelp and checked the reviews for Chela's Tacos and I headed over that way. I got two cilantro chicken tacos and two Cochinita Pibil Yucatan for my husband and me for lunch. Both were super-tasty, but the Pibil is indeed very spicy, you sure don't need any salsa on that one, but the lime juice as suggested by the owner enhanced the flavor. I don't get over to that side of town all that often, but if I do and it is lunch time, I know where I will be eating--the little red food truck by UTSA. read more

Yay! I'm a fan. That's what 4 stars means, apparently--which is a pretty accurate description of how I feel about this truck. The tacos were much larger than I expected them to be. So glad that they do not skimp on the meat. Specialty tacos are around $2.75. I ordered a Pork en Salsa Verde and a Cochinita Pibil Yucatan. The Pork en Salsa Verder was DELICIOUS. Pork was tender, juicy, and melt-in-your-mouth. The salsa verde provided a nice spicy kick (but not too much for me to handle, and I'm not one who can handle much spicy). The truck owner said the Cochinita was one of his favorites, but I did not leave with that taco on my favorites list. I'm glad the owner was able to tone down the spicy sauce for me, because I am very sure that I would not have been able to take it. The strong flavor (cumin? some other spice?) was not what I was expecting and not really to my taste. Others might like it, though! Tip: When I opened the taco, there was red sauce everywhere and I could barely hold the taco without getting red greasy sauce on my hands, and it dripped all over my white shirt (not a good idea to wear white that day). Sad. So don't wear white. :P I tried my boyfriend's chilantro chicken and fish tacos. The fish tacos were meh. Your average fish taco. Glad that they provided a little lime half to squeeze on it, though. Lime and fish = delish! Chilantro chicken tacos were AMAZING. I normally don't like chicken in tacos because it can be dry or rubbery, but this chicken had a pulled pork texture and was so soft, juicy, and flavorful. Loveeeeeeee this place!!!! To start off I think everyone should know that I HATE Mexican food. My boyfriend told me this place was really good so we went and tried it. I left my debit card at home one time and they let me pay the next time I came which was really generous of them! I always get the cochinita pibil yucatan really greasy and spicy but so worth it! Tacos al pastor it's kinda dry so I put salsa on it and it's really tasty! Chicken cilantro is really tasty! There are two things I miss about living in San Antonio: Chela's and... okay, maybe just one thing! I don't know where to start, the fresh, chewy, homemade tortillas? The flavorful, heaping fillings? I don't have enough good things to say about this place. They manage to keep the tacos authentic whilst making everything overflow with their creativity and great taste! Everything that i've tried at Chela's has been amazing, but my favorites have to be the chicken cilantro and the shrimp. My mouth is watering right now just thinking about it!! The chicken cilantro is shredded and divine. you can tell it's been stewing away in a pot of love the way it just melts in your mouth. And that shrimp? Oh boy, it's spicy and messy and all things it should be. Also, you don't get measly little guys, you get good sized shrimp on this taco! The owners are always so welcoming and hospitable! Absolutely delicious. Don't be thrown off by the white man-owner, Martin. These tacos are amazing! I had the barbacoa taco with onions and cilantro and the gringa taco. The barbacoa taco was greasy as all BBQ tacos are, but when eating it doesn't leave that oily film in your mouth, just an explosion of great flavor. They don't check their phone often if you order using the "Chela's" phone app, and you'll be sorely disappointed finding you have to wait twice as long. People use this application thinking they can skip the line if they're in a hurry, and they get screwed. Get rid of the broken application or fix it, but don't keep it around thinking it's a good solution. However the food is good, most of the time. Very bad service for pre-orders. read more

Fast, good or cheap - pick two. Says who? This place has all three. These tacos pack a Pacquiao punch. The cooks are very considerate which is rare to find in a taco stand. They'll take the initiative to tell you the best way to eat the taco (i.e. add lime, specific salsas) and you know they're passionate about it. Portions are great, price is great, service is excellent, and the timing of the food couldn't have been any quicker. A few of the items I tried: - Cochinita Pibil (Yucatan Style) - Juicy pork. Spicy flavors. Highly recommend. - Chorizo & Egg - Good chorizo. Your tongue will notice more emphasis on the egg than the sausage part. - Country Sausage and Egg - delicious, quality sausage cut up in pieces. - Barbacoa - I've had better Barbacoa elsewhere, but if you haven't ate much of this meat you won't be disappointed. - Chicken Cilantro - Juicy chicken, not dry. I'm surprised it turned out so well since it was chicken. My only complaint is the thick tortilla. If they left it cooking longer it would be skinnier, but when they don't, it's too thick and takes away from the flavor of the meats inside.
