The late night eats scene in San Antonio is already limited, so it's places like Tacos El Regio that carry the torch for folks looking for a bite in the middle of the night. There are two locations in the city, with this one smack dab in the heart of St. Mary's where they serve a nightly crowd of club goers and folks looking to avoid a hangover. Some things that separate them from the average taco truck: illuminated signage, dessert options, English friendly food descriptions, credit card machines, and higher than average prices. The latter is an obvious nod to a gringo target audience, so Mexican food purists will need to taper their expectations before partaking. Their self proclamation of "best tacos on earth" is likely in jest, but I do think they have items that are worth a look. Namely their "mini tacos" aka taquitos ($8 for 4), giant torta ($9), and charro beans . The esquite (ahem, "corn in a cup") was a bit watery for my tastes and the quesadilla ($3.50) is a solid pick. Meats are really limited to asada, pollo, and pastor but they also feature a bean and cheese taco, which at $2 is their least expensive option. On their busiest evenings, the lines can get long and customer service can be a bit curt. The parking is extremely limited to side streets, so consider this El Regio only if one is bar / club hopping, or just randomly walking through St. Mary's looking for a late night bite. read more

Baby, when I tell you that these tacos are some of the best I have ever had in Texas that is not an exaggeration! Let me preface this by saying I am from California with the best taco reside, a very specific type of taco with a very specific taste. All the good Mexican food that I have had in Texas has been in San Antonio and it's because they have the specific taste, the taste that is home! Let me also say that this is right outside of a club that has amazing music and that when I was eating these tacos, I was not drunk yet. This food truck is located in a corner that is currently a construction zone so no actual parking unless you cross the street. The ladies attending the window are very nice and our order was provided fairly quickly. Ordered the mini tacos with asada $8, a beef fajita Torta $9, beans $1.50, corn in a cup $3, Medio Litro Coke $3. Mini tacos are "OK" definitely not worth $2 each (even with the queso fresco and avocado) they are just ok on flavor but nothing special if that makes sense. Torta was good and filling. The bread was honestly the best part, fresh and authentic. It had fajita, lettuce, tomato, avocado, Crema, queso fresco. Beans, we're just your normal charro beans that you normally get for free at other places, we just wanted to try them but we wouldn't purchase them again simply because they weren't anything beyond normal. Corn in a cup... not worth it at all. It's boiled canned corn.. with the toppings. Nothing special there. Red salsa is spicier of the 2 but everything just lacks salt. I would stop for a Torta if I was in the area again but that's about it. When ordering your food ask for salt packets because they were not provided to us so we weren't actually able to put it on our food to taste the difference and since avocado is almost on everything, it definitely needed it. read more

I am ashamed that I have not written a review about this amazing food truck. I have been ordering from El Regio for at least a year, at least three times per month. The food is authentic and tasty and they're open super late for those munchies attacks that hit late at night! Delivery service is a but hit or miss, but that's not their fault bc they use third party delivery such as DoorDash so don't blame El Regio if your order takes awhile! I ordered a quesadilla with pork and a torta con asada (beef), both "Con Todo" and told them have it ready in twenty minutes . I know my priorities and I first had a couple drinks to down at the nearby Slackers establishment. Paid the very reasonable 14 dollars and threw in a couple bucks for tip as I asked for one green and one red salsa....I came back around 15 minutes later and noticed they had very consistent business coming by to pick up pre-orders...it was around 5 pm on a Saturday and around 100 degrees outside and the heat bounces off the asphalt on which this humble food truck resides. I found a friendly telephone pole that was kind enough to provide shade for those that had to wait (albeit, one at a time). Tacos Regio delivered at the right time, so no heat stroke occurred. I can now see why business was bustling...both items were excellent, especially the heavily marinated pork! Both salsas had a nice heat and were obviously homemade with the freshest of veggies. I can only imagine how business for them would be booming later with the younger folk on this street full of bars and clubs. The workers are very customer service-oriented, they look you in the eyes, listen attentively, confirm orders and are very pleasant. So why not five stars, you may ask? Well, one of the orders was plated correctly on aluminum foil but the other was not, and this is a problem. You see, the hot food melts some of the disposable plates if it is placed without an underlying layer. This could release carcinogens and it could be then consumed. I did see the cautionary burn marks on the quesadilla plate. Also, I would say that Tacos Regio should invest in some sort of shade for those that even have to stand out there for a minute in that hotspot. All It would take is an old canopy.
