Cheli is an excellent cook and everything we have had at her restaurant is delicious. My husband raves about the beef enchiladas. It is our favorite place to eat in Giddings. It is not a busy place. The only reason I can think to explain this is that the prices are higher than typical Tex-Mex. Totally worth it for fresh food, made to order, with excellent seasoning. Met family for lunch today. The three of us went for the lunch special which the waitress called it the Tex Mex. 2 Meat filled enchiladas regular rice and beans dish with a side of guacamole salad. The enchiladas had no flavor, we couldn't eat this meal. The rice was bland as were the beans. Very little food on these plates, I know I got less than half a teaspoon of the guacamole. We all agreed that this was the worst Mexican food we have ever had. Chips were tough and hard. For 3 adults we received 1 half cup of salsa. To add insult to injury the bill was $73.00 before the tip. I don't recommend this place and would never go back. I feel badly for my brother who picked up the check. I don't like to leave reviews for anybody whether good or bad, but I felt that I needed to let everyone know. It may have been good some time ago but not now. read more

Don't miss this Amazing family-run eatery with the most gracious hospitality & delicious menu in an bright decor. Mama's home-made flour tortillas are best in class! When I asked about the carnitas, Stephanie's eyes lit up. I knew I made the right choice even before eating them. The meat melted in my mouth. The charro beans have a balanced flavor. Chelis is my favorite restaurant in Giddings! This is the cleanest place I have ever eaten, the food is delicious and reasonably priced and the server is amazing! The salsa is so fresh and perfectly spiced, the tea is great and we always have a wonderful experience! We visit about once a week and love this place! Highly recommend!! read more

This place is AMAZING!!!! I would give it 10 out of 5 stars if I could. We were driving through, all of us are from different states, and we know Mexican food. This is authentic and such a great looking place. The steak and chicken in the nachos was so good. My brother had the shrimp stew with crab special, and ate the whole thing. I had the brisket burrito, which the brisket was so lean and tender I wanted more on the side. The tortillas are homemade and so great, queso, salsa, jalapeños, we did not have 1 bad thing. The service was fantastic as well. We travel this way often between our homes and going to Rockport, so this will be our new favorite route, just so we can stop here. read more

When you come to this little restaurant, you feel at home. Everything has been given thought, from the comfortable cushioned chairs, the bright tables, the decor, homemade chips all the way to the flavored water, and the presentation of the food. She has thought of everything. My daughter got menudo and even the fixings for the menudo was in a beautiful container. Real gem here in Giddings! We drive here from Bastrop just to have their chicken gizzards tacos. I know that some people will turn up their nose on the mention of gizzards but they are delicious and something you don't find in other Mexican restaurants. All the other items that are on the menu are just as good or better. The service is fantastic and the restaurant is clean. For us it's worth the drive and the price is right. read more

Omg, the BEST. Why would anyone waste their time with anywhere else in giddings for Mexican food??? I have been to Los Patrones (aka stinky carpet place) and it is junk compared to this place. The ambiance is adorable. Honestly haven't seen a nicer restaurant than this in a long time. Super clean. You can see the kitchen and it's immaculate. The cooks prepare food like it came out of my grandma's kitchen. Nothing is frozen prepared. Fresh and homemade. Salsas were fresh and HOT! Love that. Habanero salsa on the menu is so good. Prices are very reasonable and the service was excellent. We felt welcomed and our business was appreciated. It was an awesome dining experience. We will definitely be back! read more

On the drive back from Galvaston to Austin is a place called Giddings Texas. Chelis Mexican restaurant. It gets a 4 1/2* rating. As do several restaurants in Giddings. Absolutley the best Gorditas that I have ever had! She makes her own Masa for the thick corn tortilla for these. They fry them on the griddle and then cut a hole in them (like pita bread) to fill with all the goodness! The Pork is very much like the Pulled Pork that I make. I asked to have the Pork Carnitas meat on mine. There Salsa is perfect and so is the homemade Guacamole ... I cant wait to try their Empinadas. When will we ever get here again! Now there are so many things that i would try. Yummmmm! Their furniture is also beautiful Art work. Gets a 5* rating from both my husband and I for whatever our opinions are. read more

Traveling from Houston to Austin and found this awesome Mexican food place. The owners take pride in their food and service. The street tacos are some of the best I've had in this state. The tortillas melt in your mouth and the meat is soooo tender. We had Pastor, Brisket, chicken fajita, beef fajita, and pastor. Liked them all! Almost placed an order form more, but was too full. We passed this place today and decided to stop in for dinner. Such a good idea! Everyone was very nice and welcoming and the food was delicious. We had the el huarache al pastor that was phenomenal, the daily special of pork ribs with spinach and salsa verde that was raved over, and a nacho plate with chicken and steak that perfectly hit the spot. The only downside was a very limited drink menu with a small selection of domestic beers and the standard Mexican beers. I'm assuming they're still working on a liquor license and am eagerly awaiting a margarita the next time we come, because we will be back. read more

The restaurant and restrooms were clean and looked amazing with Mexican decor. We love Tex-Mex but had to have the dishes described to us. We ordered a beef fajita sope and a chicken fajita sope for a light supper. The chips and salsa were wonderful too. Our waitress, Rosio, was the best. Cheli's is a great break from Tex-Mex, great food, personable service, very reasonably priced. Chelis will even mix and match from five choices for your order of four street tacos. My wife is stuck on their empañadas of which she says that a serving of one doesn't look like a lot, but it's ALWAYS more than enough. If you're in to strong, very sweet coffee with a great cinnamon scent, tell them that when you walk in -- great with dessert or as a dessert all by itself. Wonderfully appointed, always clean, and you don't have to strain to talk over the music. Giddings is very fortunate that Cheli offers her interior Mexican home-style cooking here. read more
