But the rating is based on the water they serve at the table. It tastes like recycled dish water, and forces customers to order beverages. Ordered for takeout tonight for the first time tonight. My chicken flautas were so dry and over cooked, the chicken had no seasoning or chilies in it. Just straight plain chicken. The rice was cooked very well, it just had no flavor. Not even salt and pepper. The beef quesadillas were greasy and my husband couldn't even eat 2 of them. Red salsa was more like warm picante and the green sauce had no flavor as well. The food wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't good and very bland. Won't be back. read more

Stopped at El Charro T while on our way home from Austin. We saw lots of cars! Always a food sign. Restrooms were clean and service was adequate. While the breakfast menu was limited to 4 options, the ones we chose we're excellent! He had huevos rancheros and I had the Omelet Charro Thank you!. He devoured his lol! The omelet was fluffy and likely a 3 egg omelet. Tucked inside was the best picadillo I've had! Tender beef, moist and depth of flavor. The refried beans had something in them I couldn't identify except as delicious. The rice was ok and I really didn't eat it because I wanted more of the omelet which I couldn't finish. Soft corn tortillas and a superb jarrito of coffee completed my meal. I give 5 napkins! read more

It appeared she was the only girl working, because the other girl sitting at the cash register was too busy to help , it appeared there was something way more important on her cell phone. Pros: HUUUUGE menu, TVs, clean bathrooms, friendly staff, the red salsa was served warm, the tomatillo salsa was thick and flavorful, taco beef was real, margs big and stiff (always a plus ;-) Cons: salsa could be hotter, queso pretty boring Place was busier than I expected for the middle of nowhere on a Sunday afternoon. but the good food explained that. I had a really good run there of never eating lunch out, but I guess it's over. It's the stressful time of the year in my profession, so maybe I'll go out to eat for lunch once a week for awhile. Yesterday I had a cancelled meeting so found myself free around lunchtime, so I left the leftover pizza in the work fridge and decided to try El Charro T. I got there at about 15 'til noon and only a couple of other tables were occupied. I felt a bit silly being the only singleton, but then two other "parties of one" showed up so I felt better. I ordered an iced tea and a water to drink. I was soon presented with my drinks, and with a basket of chips, 2 bowls of salsa (green and red) and a small bowl of queso (apparently complimentary with lunches). I liked the green salsa better than the red, only used the red to flavor the fairly bland queso. Chips were really great, fresh and just the right amount of grease. I had been craving sour cream chicken enchiladas, often called Enchiladas Suizas. I was happy to see "Suizas" on the menu, but it turned out that theirs were chicken enchiladas with green sauce and white cheese. Still sounded pretty good to me, so I ordered that lunch special, which I believe was priced at 5.50 or so. I had forgotten to ask for straws with my drinks, so I had to track the waitress down after ordering so that I could get them. Otherwise I just stare at my drinks and don't drink them, even if I'm thirsty. Weird, I know. My lunch arrived fairly quickly. I asked the waitress for 2 flour tortillas to go with my meal, and she said that 3 came in an order, so I told her that was fine, knowing however that I most likely wouldn't be able to eat 3. Everything was pretty good. The rice was just okay, the beans had enough lard flavor but not enough salt (easier for me to fix than the other way around, obviously), and the enchiladas were pretty great. The green sauce was actually spicy, the cheese was good, and the filling was much better than in most enchiladas that I order: it was just tender, stewed white meat chicken, with no fat or bones. The tortillas were good and homemade. I thought about taking the one that I didn't eat, but didn't want to ask for a box for something like that and didn't have an extra napkin to wrap it up in, so I abandoned it. Sorry tortilla! I cleaned my plate since the enchiladas were so good. It didn't look like a huge amount of food, but I was so full that I never got hungry for dinner, which is a shame because my mom offered to take my husband and I out to dinner. I wasn't checked on after receiving my order, so my drinks were never refilled, though I drank most of both of them. That was annoying but maybe it's not typical. When I went up to pay I saw that they had the green/red/white coconut candy I like so well, so I asked for some of that too (haven't eaten it yet, it's in my desk at work right now). My total for tea, enchiladas, tortillas, and candy was 10.50. Maybe more than I was expecting considering the price of the lunch special, but I did have some add-ons. I think I'll probably end up going back for lunch sometime. The food was much better than I expected, and maybe the service will be better next time. read more

I was driving home from a wedding in Willis, Texas (yes, that is a real place) and we stopped in at this fine establishment. We were greeted by presumably the owner or manager. He was very friendly and allowed us to sit by the TV so that we could watch some NFL action. I ordered a jumbo frozen margarita, which was huge. Apparently on Wednesdays they have $1 margs. I can only see that ending horribly because they were pretty stiff, haha. I ordered a chile relleno, which was tasty and extremely cheesy. Some queso, which was a little on the bland side, but good nonetheless. The place is so authentic that I'm fairly certain the waitress didn't speak much English (she was friendly though). There was a slight debaucle when I ordered a chile relleno and asked for no meat (I'm a vegetarian). It was cool though, she quickly asked the manager to come over and verify. I feel like such a big-city snob leaving this review, thinking about all my big-city Mexican restaurants with their brisket tacos and specialty margaritas. The fact is, my family and I were far away from Cristina and her brisket, and we were hungry. El Charro T was a nice surprise. It was clean, had great salsa, and decent food. We all enjoyed our meals and the service was pretty good. I won't be going out of my way to come back here, but if I'm ever in Giddings again I'll remember it as a safe place to have a meal. read more

We went here because this is a good meeting place between Houston and Killeen. It wasn't too busy for a Monday night. The salsa is different from your typical salsa roja, this one is I don't know, more orange? It was very good, though, and served warm. The guacamole was mediocre at best. Both my husband and I got the Tacos Mexicanos - he got pollo on flour tortillas and I got carne asada on corn. I think they make their tortillas in house. Both the pollo and carne asada tacos were VERY tasty. They come served with cilantro and onion with lime, a spicy sauce that comes on the side (that I didn't try) and a side of charro beans. We were both very pleased with our meal. If you order with flour tortillas you will only get 3 tacos because they're a little larger...with the corn tortillas you get four. If there was a way to do zero stars, I would. It doesn't deserve to be called Mexican or Tex-Mex: bland beyond all recognition. The rice tasted like the rice from a Chinese restaurant but with a touch of grease. The beef filling in my chili relleno had no seasoning, tasted like boiled (not sauteed) ground beef, and the batter on the chile might have been rancid. The sauce on the chile and on my husband's enchiladas had less flavor than watered down ketchup. The refried beans had no seasoning. The staff were disinterested and inattentive. No one seemed to be in charge and no one cared. And this during a slow time with only 4 occupied tables! Giddings has several good dining options (Hunan Chinese and Reba's Pizza and Sandwich Shop come to mind). If we find good Mexican there, we'll post it. But pass on El Charro T if you want Mexican food. read more

We have checked out El Charro T twice now. We absolutely love the chips and salsa. They provide complimentary red and green sauce. The red is laden with big chunks of onion, which adds great flavor. The green sauce is great as well. I have had huevos a la Mexicana tacos with cheese both times and it was great. Service hasn't been consistent and both times we have visited there was a challenge in getting our order correct but it rates 4 stars for me. A nice alternative to a fast food restaurant when you are making the Houston-Austin trip. I tried the chicken tortilla soup this time and loved the way they brought the tortillas, avacado and chicken on a side plate so I could add it myself and eat it while it was still semi-crunchy/fresh. I ordered vegetable fajitas which come with broccoli, cauliflower, squash, zucchini, carrots, and onions grilled in vegetable oil. Then they asked what kings of meat I wanted on my vegetable fajitas. I had them add poblanos, instead. I should have also added mushrooms. The chips and salsa were very good. We did have to wait a really long time for our food, even though it wasn't exactly crowded. My wife & I were passing through from Houston to Fredericksburg. We reluctantly stopped to try El Charro T. The salsa, queso & chips were a great start to the meal. The salsa is homemade & served hot. Next, the wife had Carne Guisada & raved on how good it was. I had the special today, which was the Chipotle Chicken. It was one of the best Mexican lunches I've ever had. Added bonus,...they serve sweet tea & it was fresh brewed & excellent as well. Our bill (including extra queso) was $24.38 before tax & tip. It is hard to believe any of the posts for this very, very poor restaurant. The dishes may look mexican but is entirely without the spices. Even canned stuff from the store has more flavor and spice. Seriously, my wife and I have eaten a lot of Mexican food from Arizona, New Mexico, and all over Texas, and this place is the worst of the worst. Upon inquiry, we learned this taste and flavor ghetto is one of two restaurants owned by a single family, none of whom work there, but employ a manager who has eliminated the spices and cheapened ingedients for a bigger personal paycheck. Great unexpected stop for weary travelers! It was late and we were only half-way to our destination. Our waitress (who owns the other El Charro T in Brenham) went above and beyond to make us feel well taken care of! When he showed the server, she got mad and took the plate to the kitchen. She was rude and ignored him after that. Three of us stopped there for dinner after a H.S. basketball game at about 7:00 PM. There were not more than five other tables occupied. We ordered appetizer of chili con queso. It was cold and lumpy but tasty. We ordered a plate of nachos and one order of huevos rancheros. The server was not familiar with what came on the plate. We waited a half an hour for the food to arrive. Our server seemed to ignore us the whole time even though we tried to get her attention.
