5 Stars - A True Gem in the Community! I can't say enough good things about Cheng's Garden in Atlantic Highlands! My son and his friends recently visited but realized they couldn't pay because Apple Pay wasn't accepted. As they were about to leave, the owner called them back in, served them a full meal with drinks, and refused to take a dime. The kindness and generosity shown left such a lasting impression on them--it's not every day you see a business treat people like family. Beyond their incredible hospitality, the food here has always been phenomenal. Every time we've dined in or ordered takeout, it's been top-notch. We ordered General Tso's, Vegetable Lo Mein, and Chicken and Broccoli. The first two are great/like normal Chinese. The chicken and broccoli wasn't our favorite as the chicken seemed too soft/had a different flavor/not sure. Veggie Lo Mein has mushrooms in it, buyer beware, but good. Overall solid Chinese meal for the area, as we don't have many. Got it delivered by DoorDash no issues and faster than predicted. read more

Had a weird experience recently. I like the food, owners are nice, bla bla bla. Recently though, someone ordered me something off grubhub to be delivered at a certain time. So, I was out walking my dogs and walked up to my apartment and noticed a man leaving my porch area, with no food in hand, asking if I had ordered. And I said that I was expecting him at 6:45, not 6:30. Anyway, when I walked into my place my food was inside. Meaning, on the walk around my complex, the guy went INTO MY APARTMENT and left the food. I know, I know, I shouldn't leave my door unlocked even during a quick 5 min walk, but this is Atlantic Highlands,r right? A few knocks and a phone call would have sufficed, not opening up the door and walking into someone's home without their knowledge or consent. CREEPY. read more

A classic Chinese restaurant. Family owned. Incredible prices! Reminds me of the great Chinese places in New York City where the prices are low and the quality is outstanding! My family picked up food because we didn't want to cook tonight. We fed 10 people with enough leftovers for 10 more people! Atlantic Highlands is the Jewel of Monmouth County and little restaurants like this proves my point. Incredible food, warm & happy service. When I want Chinese this is where I'm going. I ordered a small delivery order and when it arrived the driver called me. I asked him to please leave it outside the door. He then proceeded to rudely ask if I left a tip. I said I thought I did and he said it's delivery you must leave a tip. I said okay please leave the order at the door. He then aggressively told me he'd never deliver to me again and hung up the phone. The aggression in this phone call was absurd. I honestly felt unsafe getting my order from outside my door because I could see the driver sitting in his car staring and waiting for me to come outside. I will no longer be ordering from this restaurant if this is how the employees treat their customers. read more

Just tried calling in an order. Asked the woman who answered to cut back or eliminate the soy sauce in my order of Vegetable Lo Mein. She laughed at me and said they can't take the soy-based sauce out of the the dish, because the sauce was already made. So I asked if they could prepare the dish with a different sauce. She laughed again and said, "It already made." I then asked her if that meant the Lo Mein wasn't made to order, but rather made beforehand and was sitting around to be scooped up as people order it. She laughed again, said she couldn't help me, and hung up. I hear this place used to be great. Sadly, no more. read more

There a several decent Chinese food delivery joints near my home. Cheng's in Atlantic Highlands is consistently good. Several minor details clue me into digging a Chinese food place. A) they make real fried rice from scratch not just adding protein, soy sauce, and veggies to white rice. B) there is a detectable amount of meat in their won tons. C) the phone operator gets the order correctly and is understandable when speaking. They have large and small portions on the menu that is terrific for a single person. The food arrives quickly and most importantly it arrives steaming hot. You can't be too critical because it is take out but do beware the Lobster choices on the menu may contain artificial lobster meat. If to get beef pork or chicken you won't be unsatisfied. The prices are fair and the delivery is quick. With very good and consistent food Cheng's is my go to when I want Chinese delivery. read more

Will never order from here again. The few times I have the fried rice was cold and tasted old. Then they literally have complained about how much we tip them each time. It's really hard to want to tip someone well when they expect a large tip before you right it down making comments about a tip before you even sign the slip...I've been in the restaurant business for over twenty years and it takes a lot for me to be this annoyed. It is with a sad, sad heart that I give Cheng's Garden a 3 star rating. You may (or may not) be wondering why I'm beginning a review of a Chinese delivery place in such an emotional way, and I will tell you: Cheng's Garden has been a staple in my family for years!! Cheng's Garden has been in Atlantic Highlands for 23 years, and it had always been our reliably awesome, go-to Chinese takeout place. Probably not the highest quality ingredients, definitely not the most authentic- just really great, greasy delivery. When I moved to Colorado for school, I was shocked by how terrible the Chinese delivery is there. Chow fun is virtually non existent, vegetables consist of celery and carrots...blah. So, it's become somewhat of a tradition for my family and me to order Cheng's Garden as soon as I am back in town visiting. Until recently. This might not even be something you would notice unless you had been ordering from there for 23 years, but this place has changed ownership recently. The menu is similar-- although they have added sushi, which I had not tried, nor would I endeavor to-- but the quality of the food has dropped. The vegetable chow fun that was once packed with straw mushrooms, bamboo, water chestnuts, etc is now strewn with sprouts, scallions, and the occasional crimini. Just not as appealing as it used to be. Let me put it this way: I had intended to write a 5 star review for this place, but it's really more at an "average" mark now. If you're looking to get some Chinese delivery I would probably still recommend this place-- but not as enthusiastically as I used to. read more

I worked here before Sunny and Cheng sold the place. I was the delivery driver for 10 years. I ordered tonight and my dasher brought the food right out. My only issue and its not a huge one is that the lobster chop suey was actually crawdads and small slices of fake crabs. It took me a while to figure it out... the texture is just wrong. That said I like crawfish and there were about 18 tails in the pint serving. It tasted good even if not lobster. After trying many Chinese restaurants in middletown, and being disappointed not only in the way some of the food is made, but the lack of delivery options...we found Chengs Garden to be a great choice and a pleasure!. Good portions, reasonably priced..,,I ordered online thru their website which was really easy. And they offer a delivery option which I selected. The food came quickly and steaming hot.2 orders of Chicken with broccoli, vegetable lo main and shrimp rolls were perfectly made and tasty. Lots of chicken, not too salty, just the right amount of sauce(not swimming in it). Good Chinese food. Ive eaten there multiple times. The place is small and appears dirty, but its just an old interior. It's mainly just a take out place. I've eaten multiple dishes from this place over the years, and it's good. Just don't eat inside it throws many people off. The place is actually clean it just looks really old. read more

Used to be our favorite Chinese restaurant but something changed recently and it's not as tasty as it used to be. Don't get me wrong it's still pretty good... but not as good as it used to be. It's very quick and usually only takes 10 minutes to cook. Sometimes it's hard to find parking so it's good if someone can drop you off for the pick up. read more

One of the most inconsistent Chinese food restaurants in the area. After a period of about two months of having great food, they have hit a funky patch. Pork fried rice was literally white rice with pieces of pork in it. I was so baffled when I opened the tray. Orange chicken was just OKAY. I don't know what is going on there lately! read more

Used to be a pretty good take-out place, but definitely not what it used to be. Had eaten there for about 10 years, won't any more. They appear to have changed ownership. Food doesn't seem fresh,and is less authentic. (I've been to China, and have found only one restaurant in the area that is authentic) They also put a lot less meat into some dishes which should be meat centered. read more
