The weather ended up being great today! It was definitely worth the trip to check out Fort Lee, another vibrant Koreatown near the city. I made my first visit to Cheongsu, a super homey Korean cafe featuring drinks, pastries, and desserts. Given the weather, I went with their strawberry matcha bingsu. It was the perfect size for two people to share. I loved how thoughtfully it was layered--between the shaved ice, they added strawberry and matcha sauces, topped it off with shaved milk ice and sweet cream, and finished it with plenty of matcha powder and fresh strawberries. Such a lovely spot for a group of four or less to catch up over light bites and good drinks. read more

I would say Service is pretty nonexistent as you order on the counter and you see yourself with no waitressing. The cashier lady was also pretty rude and not accomodating to my request (make my drinks less sweet) so they lose a store for that. Atmosphere is cute and vibes are great, definitely has modern and traditional Korean vibes. However, I would not say that this is like a traditional tea house? Having been to A LOT of tea houses in Korea, their menu and concept is definitely far from what a traditional teahouse is like. For instance, a traditional teahouse would have assorted rice, cakes and traditional, Korean desserts, however, I feel like this place used modern French pastries, and put a Korean twist on them, which I would say is not very Korean in reality. If you are looking to escape into a beautiful Korean café with a calming aesthetic, this is the place to be. The décor is minimalist yet warm, creating a peaceful, zen like atmosphere. The only drawback is its popularity. The first floor can get quite crowded and noisy. To be transparent, we went on the weekend. Fortunately, there is additional seating upstairs, as well as a quieter outdoor seating area located on the left side of the café. Parking is limited and can be found to the right of the main entrance. The café operates on a self-service system. Orders are placed through a kiosk, making the process quick and efficient. After ordering, you let them know, and they give you a buzzer to alert you when your order is ready. Our buzzer never rang, but thankfully, when we placed the order, we included our phone number, so we received a text. Here's what we tried: - Ube Cold Foam Latte -- 5/5 Stars Creamy, delicious, and visually gorgeous. This was easily the standout item of our visit. - Black Sesame Madeleine -- 3/5 Stars* The texture was soft and pleasant, but there was virtually no black sesame flavor. In fact, the icing both looked and tasted like matcha. I genuinely wondered if we had been given the wrong Madeleine. Ordered 3 different types of Yakgwa - Classic Yakgwa, Black Sesame Yakgwa, and Injeolmi Yakgwa -- 3/5 Stars Visually, these were works of art. The craftsmanship and presentation were impeccable. Unfortunately, the texture was disappointing. Yakgwa should be dense and slightly chewy, but these were extremely hard and difficult to bite into. The rating is largely for their artistry, as the eating experience fell short of expectations. - Iced Decaf Americano -- 3/5 Stars The espresso was noticeably bitter and lacked balance. - Iced Café Latte -- 3/5 Stars The oat milk helped soften some of the bitterness from the espresso, making it more enjoyable than the Americano, but it still was not a standout drink. Despite some disappointments, I would return. Although next time, I would opt for the outdoor seating and explore more of their menu, such as tea ades, soufflé castellas, bingsu, and fromage desserts. I found this place on Instagram. It was such a cute spot, and super busy when I went on a Saturday afternoon. To place your order. However, there was still a short wait to grab a seat as well as get your food. All the items we ordered were aesthetically very pretty. The display is top notch. Tea + confections and more. Crossing off another place on my list. Cheongsu in Fort Lee serves souffles, madeleines, matchas and several other items. I was incredibly intrigued by the Korean special set menu and had to get it! It comes with tea, madeleine, traditional Korean confectionery, jelly, dried seasonal fruit and candied chestnuts. I wish I have the opportunity to have this more often. I also tried their yuzu beverage. The pulp separates pretty quickly and sank in the bottom. With a filled glass, it wasn't easy to blend with the spritz. Since it was my first time, I asked a few questions and was told that they'd send a text message when it was ready. I recall reading that the soufflé takes 30 minutes to complete as well. Pro, it's great that the whole order was ready before 30 minutes; Con, the soufflé was under cooked. Also, since the food was ready sooner than anticipated, I wasn't able to retrieve the order on time and was "scolded" that they're not a table service type of establishment. 1, I'm fully aware I had to get my order myself. Unfortunately the call only reflected the main floor where the serving counter was. Not upstairs, not outside. 2. I should've been given grace since again, it was served earlier than anticipated. I also didn't get a text message that it was ready. There are lots of opportunities for improvement here, like an intercom of some sort outside and upstairs. I didn't see the upstairs so idk if it really needs it there. Since they're not a table service type of establishment, an automatic door would be great because everything had to be returned inside. Envision glasses on trays with other tablewares, full hands and the door.... Not to mention if someone was coming out from the inside. It's a disaster waiting to happen. This place is so cute!! I was transported to another country. It's so zen upon entry. Seems like they have a parking lot adjacent which is nice. You order on one of the two kiosks. Then they call your number. The soufflés take 20-30min. They have tap water with ice if you ask. They have some outdoor tables too. And a bathroom. The cream brûlée matcha was so unique. I loved the crunchy top and watching them heat it up. The cream in it is rich and tastes very good with a dipped salted vanilla financier. We got an assortment of cookies. The standout was the Dubai matcha one. It had a kataifi in the center which made it crunch and on the outside a thin layer of chewy mochi, which was kind of floral tasting. For some reason it tasted like fruity pebbles even though that's not the flavor profile I was expecting. The soufflé was steaming hot, had red bean on the bottom and a ton of sesame on the top and inside as well. It wasn't strong in flavor and was light and fluffy. The green tea Madeleine was too dry and bitter for me. Some of the other cookies we had were on the dry side as well. Overall really unique place with lots of unique flavors. Everything was good but the bingsoo was a standout, possibly one of the best ones I've ever had despite not having mochi nor red bean. Texture and flavor were perfect and not too sweet. The place has a parking lot with a few spots but the ramp is located in an awkward spot so it can be difficult to turn in especially when there's people leaving and coming in too. My family and I came on a Sunday evening and it was kind of packed, especially since the outdoor garden and upstairs was closed. As a result, the employees usually limit the dine-in time and encourage people to refrain from taking larger tables when your party is smaller. The place has a warm, wood theme that makes it feel very cozy inside. Upon walking in, you can see a display models of all the desserts they have or you can use one of two kiosks to look at pictures and order! My sister wanted to get one of their signature desserts: souffle castellan or fromage. I wanted to try their madeleines, financier, and shaved ice. One thing we could agree on is no yakgwa. We're not a fan of the chewy, sweet flour dessert. We shared a Matcha Fromage, Black Sesame Madeline, and Salted Vanilla Financier. The Matcha Fromage was a bit overrated. It has a hard, dry texture but the matcha flavor made it bearable. Would not order again. The black sesame Madeline and Salted vanilla financier on the other hand were out of this world. Perfect taste and texture. Soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. My sister did not want the shaved ice and I could not finish it myself but honestly wished we got it instead of the fromage. Everyone in the room had a shaved ice on their table. Whether it was matcha or strawberry - they all looked sooo good! As for drinks, we ordered an iced creme brulee matcha latte and a vanilla latte. They messed up our order and gave us a plain iced creme brulee latte which has coffee in it! The barista was nice when we told her about what happened. She informed us she will make the correct drink, but that if we wanted we could keep the drink made in error. Luckily, my sister is a coffee drinker so she drank it and I drank the matcha one. They were good but the creme brulee too definitely makes it more sweet. The vanilla latte has a cute bear art on top but flavor wise, it's just like any regular vanilla latte. Came here to check out this dessert spot with authentic Korean elements and overall, it's definitely more of a vibe than a "must come for the dessert" kind of place. They do have their own parking lot, which is convenient, but just a heads up, it's pretty limited and fills up quickly. Everything is very Instagram worthy, from the presentation to the interior. My friend and I ordered a dessert set, two strawberry matchas, and the matcha fromage. Out of everything in the set, I only really liked the financier. It was moist, lightly sweet, and honestly the only item I'd order again. The rest of the desserts were either too sweet or just didn't quite hit the mark for my taste. The drinks: mixing the matcha and the milk and just drinking the matcha itself was actually really good. It was deep, earthy, and high quality, but once the strawberry purée was mixed in, it became overwhelmingly sweet. I couldn't even finish it. The matcha fromage was decent, with soft layers of sponge cake, soft cream, chestnuts, and a dusting of matcha powder, but not something I'd specifically crave again. Have been wanting to try this dessert bar for awhile and it is as good as it looks. There are plenty of parking lots and street parking around the area. The cafe itself can get crowded at times and some things may run out near the end of the day. It was a very elegant space and service was pretty fast. We got the traditional shaved ice, matcha latte, and peach refresher, and the dubai chewy cookie. My favorite was the chewy cookie, it was so good! The matcha was rich and flavorful, perfect blend with the milk. Shaved ice and peach drink were really good as well. With its picture-ready plates, Cheongsu lies at the intersection of art and desserts. The cafe is in inside what looks like a two-family converted home, which makes the entryway feel strangely like coming to someone's house. Once inside, the space is tight but cozy. An enormous front window and skylights provide lots of ambiance, which may have been why it was abuzz with so many customers on a weekday afternoon. There's a large bar area that takes up a good fraction of the overall space, but much of it is used to prepare drinks and desserts. The actual ordering process takes place through one of two standalone kiosks. Considering how steady the foot traffic and how detail-oriented the workers had to be to make the drinks and desserts, I was surprised at how quickly our order came out. The desserts are a sight. We snagged a spot close to the kitchen window so we were able to sneak a glance into the painstaking process that went into their signature fromage desserts. They're like small square landscapes with a sponge base, a whipped cheese-based mousse, and hand-broken black sesame sponges. What I assumed would be style over substance turned out to be a light, airy, well-balanced dessert. We got the matcha fromage, and I appreciated how the sprinkling of matcha powder helped counteract the overall sweetness. For our beverage, we ordered a caramel macchiato, which was a smaller than expected serving but delicious. Though the vibes are calm and unhurried, this definitely didn't feel like the sort of cafe where one could linger. With new parties coming through and building up queues that clogged the little standing space in the main room, it didn't feel right to hang onto a table for too long (and, as my husband noticed, the chairs are too hard to sit for too long without discomfort). Everything on the menu is pretty fancy and made-to-order, and the prices definitely reflect that. Thankfully, there's an adjoining lot with a few free parking spots to offset the expensive cafe visit (heed the warnings others have left about the tight and steep ramp - it's hard to angle your car into it and I could see how some would scrape the bottom of their car if they tried to enter or exit at a certain speed). read more

The weekday Korean Special set is worth it if you can go during the week -- comes with tea and a mix of pastries and traditional sweets. The berry jelly was refreshing. 3.5 stars, but I'm feeling generous. Maybe it's all the mugwort. While waiting for a table at Aquarius, our food crew ventured over to Cheongsu to have dessert before dim sum. I didn't visit the OG location when I was in Seoul, but I assume it's just as lovely (if not lovelier) as this slice of Asian zen heaven. Even if the pastries weren't the best I've ever had made by Korean hands, I'd probably eat sawdust just to have a place this pretty and serene in the city. On that, the popular Mugwort Scone was a realization in grassy, herbacious breadliness. Not sure I'd ever CHOOSE this flavor of scone in any other context, but I applaud the out-of-the-box creativity. We also got a variety of yakgwas to try--not normally my preferred flavor profile, but these were surprisingly satisfying. The Nuts and Original were great, while the Black Sesame and Injeolmi were too dry. Similarly, the Injeolmi Madeleine was not my cup of tea either. Speaking of tea, do sip some Hot Misugaru if you want something distinctly Korean, hearty and warming for your insides. Fortunately, there was not a wait to order nor for a table to sit. There is an upstairs but it is closed for renovation. There are two kiosks to order from on the ground floor and it is like a cafeteria style, you pick up food yourself and put the trays away when you are done. Ordered iced misutgaru, iced Earl, grey milk, and Matcha fromage. The iced misutgaru tastes nutty, rich and sweet. Matcha fromage has potato pieces on top as decoration and I think dill pieces also as decorations. I find that if you dont eat the matcha fromage carefully, you might choke because they put matcha powders on top of the cake. They also sell matcha in tin cans and traditional korean accessories. Finally got the chance to visit Cheongsu in Fort Lee and had a good experience. We came on a weekday evening and there was no wait anymore yay! Outside is as pretty as the inside setting and we were able to enjoy our desserts. We got their black sesame bingsu which was earthy and sweet - a nice delicate balance. Something cold was also a perfect treat for this summer weather. And of course we had to try one of their signature fromages and got the matcha. It was spongy but had a nice cream in between so it didnt come out so dry. The cake that resembled "rocks" were really just for aesthetics as they were too dry to be eaten alone. Nice touch though. Good amount of space inside with an option to go "upstairs" too. Hope to revisit someday! read more

My husband and I stopped by and had a lovely experience. I was nervous it would be super busy since they don't take reservations but there was plenty of space when we arrived at around 11:30 on a Sunday. The staff was welcoming and led us to order from the screens. The hardest part was deciding what to try. We ended up sharing the black sesame Bingsu, chocolate soufflé, chocolate yakgwa, coconut Financier, latte, and jasmine tea (Harney and Sons brand). We actually enjoyed every item. Nothing was too sweet, which we really liked. The first to come out were the small tea treats with our drinks. The yakgwa was lightly sweetened with a small crunch. The black sesame Bingsu came out second and was so deliciously light. The best part was they blended black sesame on the inside of the Bingsu as well so it wasn't just ice as you ate toward the center. The chocolate soufflé came out piping hot and was very light, fluffy, and rich all at the same time. It resembled a molten lava cake mixed with a soufflé pancake. Overall delicious and satisfying. After viewing their website, I decided to give Cheongsu a try. What I loved most is the authentic design of the house, garden, and outdoor patio. There is also a cozy indoor seating area. Cheongsu offers uniquely crafted desserts that are beautifully plated. Unfortunately, as I am dairy intolerant, I was unable to try one of these items. But, they looked delicious. I instead opted for a misutgaru oat milk and a black sesame Madeleine. I felt very relaxed while sitting on their outdoor patio. From my experience, the best aspect of this cafe is its atmosphere. I would not say that the staff was particularly friendly, however. Didn't interact much with the folks working but they seemed helpful. We ordered shaved ice, coffee, latte and a few Madeline and honestly everything was good. Been wanting to try this Super cute dessert spot and it was definitely worth the wait!! The menu is filled with tons of Korean dessert delicacies and drinks. I was most excited for the shaved ice and misugaru cream top which were both incredibly delicious with real ingredients you can taste, not just loaded sugar. The inside is packed on any given day but there is outdoor seating to accommodate as well. The girl behind the counter was helpful in answering my questions when ordering despite the chaos inside.
