Was a loyal "customer" for years. Our West Highland Terrier was drinking a lot of water and had a crusty nose. We were told that's normal. His black nose turned pink, were told that's normal. His liver enzymes were high, were told they'd watch it. As we watched his health decline, NOT a single vet helped him. When I finally demanded a referral to a specialist, after years of watching this amazing dog lose his light, found out not only did he have diabetes but a liver disease with all the symptoms glaringly apparent. He had seen 5 different vets at Cherokee Trails bc they "rotate". By the time, he saw a specialist, he wasn't eating or walking. Shame on this practice. Under the proper care, he lived a bit longer. Can't help but wonder, if a single vet at this practice had paid attention to what my children and I were saying, instead of dismissing us, how much longer his light would have held. Absolutely love this place! Came in as a walk in today with my Boston Terrier who had surgery at Banfield on Thursday. She started having labored breathing last night so I took her to Banfield and they wouldn't see her because they were short staffed. I walked into Cherokee Trail and even though they weren't taking anymore walk ins, still got us in and checked her out. The doctor and staff were amazing! I will be going here from now on. Banfield is absolutely ridiculous, I'll never be back!!! read more

I brought my dog here when I moved to Lexington in 2018. She had a lot of medical issues and I was worried about finding a vet who understood and had knowledge about her condition. Three days after I moved here she got sick and needed the vet. They were awesome. They didn't know much about her condition but were happy to do some research and listen to me about what I typically do for her when she has a problem (what meds, fluids, etc.) we saw Dr. Brown numerous times until my girl suddenly got sick in January. When Dr. Brown finally figured out what was going on, she explained all my options, and ultimately was supportive of the choice to put her to sleep. The staff was amazing during that time, and a week later I received a hand written sympathy card signed by the staff. Amazing clinic and amazing staff. A little pricier than some clinics but definitely worth it. read more

They have had some great vets...but they leave this practice. When your dog almost dies from having a tooth extracted and the vet says "you need to prepare yourself to see him because his eye is bulging so badly", then puts you in the lobby to see him...not knowing what to expect. It was a horrible experience. Then have had to see specialist to treat the eye. Some apologies...not enough. Even the staff shows no empathy. Don't go here if you love your fur baby! I used to take my dog's here four years until I moved away to Georgia. They are a little pricey but in this situation I feel like you get what you pay for. The staff is super friendly and super through with the animals. This staff always comes up to greet my two dogs and does a great job of making them feel comfortable. Had an emergency. Dog ingested raisins, and even a small amount is toxic. They're 5 mins from my house. Called them and explained the emergency asking could I bring him there since they were still open and timing is important to avoid kidney failure. They fobbed us off to the emergency vet that's 20 mins away. They could have offered to induce vomiting and then have me come to the ER vet to follow up. Not impressed with their care / Compassion. read more

My Jack Russell Harry has had irritable issues for the past 6 years we have owned him. He has been seen by several different vets (due to moving) and have not been able to solve the problem. Recently he became very ill and would not quit eating grass and vomiting. Again we are new to the area so called Cherokee Trail of which I had pre registered him approx a month ago. He was seen almost immediately and did not have to wait for Dr.Chiliag either. I appreciated someone finally taking time to take Harry's history and learn a bit about him and his issues. After prescribing medication and a change in dog food he is almost 100% better in less than 48 hours. Time will of course tell with the rest but so far so good. I can not say enough good things about Dr Ginger McCauley and her excellent staff. She is never in a hurry and takes time to throughly examine my puppy. As well as to explain everything in detail. It is so obvious she loves and cares about your pet. The office and examination rooms are very clean and sanitary. Took my cat here for help with his itching. First of all, the older lady with spiky hair at the front desk was incredibly rude and dismissive. There was no hello nice to see you or I'll be right with you. She acted like it was annoying I had come in for my scheduled appointment. She was angry that I did not have paper copies of his records, when every vet I have ever been to has called the previous vets for the records. The vet tech and Dr. Strom acted annoyed by my explanation of my cats long medical history, and dismissive that I knew what medicine he needed. They actually cut me off and prescribed me something else for a topical antibacterial that was hard to apply (not in a foam or mousse) and useless for our needs. Angry spiky haired receptionist then acted as though I was a peasant for wanting to split the appointment and medicine cost with my fiancé. Finally when we ordered our specialty food through them, they did not call to let us know it was there. I went to pick up the food from angry spiky haired lady at the front desk, and it had been marked up over 15% of base price. I have had other vets that barely mark it up at all over cost because they charge you for the prescription. This place is trying to make a buck and take you along for the ride. read more

Was taking my cat to a great vet, then moved so had to find another one. Had all my info transferred to Cherokee Trail, and they told me they would call and let me know when they got my info so I could get some flea preventative and get his shots renewed. Never got a call, but I did get an email with the option to book an appointment online. So I tried that three or four times, but kept getting a message that my pet's name was invalid? So then I tried calling to get an appointment, but no one ever answered the phone and it never went to voicemail (yes, this was during regular business hours). Tried back a while later and got someone, but they put me on hold for several minutes. Hung up and tried calling back, got put on hold again. Planning on just finding a different vet now. read more

This was a great veterinary office! I brought my obnoxious dog into the office and they were warm and welcoming. The doctor was great with my dog and they diagnosed her. I'd give 5 stars for Dr. Hansche & Dr. Swenson, they're both phenomenal as well as the only docs we've seen. Dr. Hansche is our usual, & preferred, vet, he has a way with animals AND humans which isn't always easy to find. Dr. Hansche also has a great memory for your pets & he's trustworthy, sharp & funny!! We had Dr. Swenson when we came in for an emergency & Dr. Hansche was out of the office, she was (almost) equally as capable & personable. The only reason we gave 4 out of 5 stars are the prices!! They don't go over any costs with you ahead of time & on top of that they're quite pricey. I took 2 tiny, albeit full-grown, dogs in for their annual exam; 1 panel of blood work, distemper & rabies vaccines & my total was $447. The visit was around $50 (normal) per pup even though they were slotted for the same appointment time. Then they charged me $91 per dog for the 1 blood work panel required in order to purchase flea, tick & heartworm preventative from them . The remainder of the costs were their couple immunizations each. That's A LOT of moolah! Anyway, Dr. Hansche is your guy is you want educated, funny, personable, attentive, an animal magnet & a great memory in your vet. They DO offer a military discount so if you're active or retired (like myself) make sure you take advantage of that 10%!!.....you'll need it!! read more

My standard poodle had many health issue starting from birth. He lived to the age of 11 because of the treatment he received at Cherokee Trail. The last few years he saw Dr. Keisler because she knew ALL his health issues. I lost my dog after a three week illness where he was forced into the 24 hour clinic. Dr. Keisler stayed in touch the entire time. She gave us candid advise and made decisions so much easier. She was beyond his vet, she was my therapist during a nightmare. This kind of healthcare is a dying breed. It is easy to see that every one from the doctors to the techs to the front desk love what they do. I will miss seeing them all. read more

We took our two Shitzus to Dr. Macauley from the time we moved to Columbia until we moved away 5 years later. I would still make the almost 3 hour trip from coastal SC to Lexington if needed. Dr. Macauley is absolutely wonderful! She is very knowledgeable and delivers state-of-the-art care. During our time in Columbia we spent weekends at our primary residence in coastal SC and had to take the pups at varying times to a 24 -hour veterinary center when they became ill. Every single time, Dr. Macauley called us to follow up! She even called us last year when our dear Bailey had to have a splenectomy for an enlarging tumor which was very suspicious for a malignancy and we had already moved away! Dr. Macauley followed up with us and comforted us as the we awaited the final pathology. Our heartache turned to joy when Bailey did well post-op and then pathology report showed no malignancy. She called us and rejoiced with us. Her clinic was always willing to work us in when needed. We so miss the wonderful care she provided to our dear pups and, if needed, will travel back to Lexington in the future. I am a physician myself and very particular about the care our pets receive. The building is beautiful although it is in a place where you have to make a dangerous turn in front of on coming traffic. The staff is hostile and indifferent. There was a woman vet I saw there once who was kind and caring. I don't know where she went. They charge me way over $100 for flea medicine I can get online for $80.
