I have used Irmo Pet Retreat several times for my dogs. Everyone there is so friendly and helpful,…read moreand most importantly my dogs come home so happy. On our last pick up, my dog actually tried to run back with them after greeting us. They also have fair prices and don't nickel and dime you like some other places. I can't recommend them enough!

We boarded our dogs Oakley and Theo from July 19th-28th at Irmo Pet Retreat. We had used them…read morebefore and never had an issue but this is a big enough red flag that I wanted to share. When we dropped them off, Theo (our Labradoodle) had a cut on the end of his back from trying to crawl under our house and scraped it against the concrete. We weren't worried about it since we had been putting Neosporin on it and he couldn't reach it so it wasn't being messed with. The employee there mentioned they had a spray they could use on it and my husband said that would be fine to use it if they wanted. When we got back from our trip, Aaron went to go pick up the dogs. Once he got there, the employee said, "I don't want you to be shocked so I'll tell you now but...all the hair on Theo's back has fallen out." 1st problem: our dogs hair fell out...and we weren't contacted. Sure enough, his whole back was bare and there were some sore spots on his back that you could tell hurt him to touch. We took him to the vet, spent hundreds of dollars running tests and taking skin samples and trying to figure out what could've happened. All the vets and nurses were totally baffled and frustrated alongside us. The vet gave us a call later saying his bloodwork came back fine but the best they could all figure was that it was a chemical burn...they suggested maybe he rolled in cleaning products or something and I needed to figure out what products Irmo Pet Retreat uses. 2nd problem: Our dog lost all hair on his back and has sores from chemical burns...and we weren't contacted. I'll try to attach the screenshots of the email I sent to irmo pet retreat and their response and photos of Theo's poor back/sores. I'm honestly confused and just don't know how to proceed. It would be one thing if an accident happened and then they contacted us...but it's another thing that this happened in their care, and very alarming that they didn't contact us with his significant hair loss. He could've had several things wrong with him and definitely would've needed to be taken to the vet. SO. Seems very shady and anywho, we're pretty disappointed to say the least.

I approved all recommended testing in hopes of getting answers and ensuring he received the care he needed. After the testing was completed, I was informed that his bloodwork was "immaculate" aside from an elevated white blood cell count, and medication was prescribed. Unfortunately, once the medication ran out, his condition began to worsen. Last week, I called the office because I was concerned that my dog's health was declining and wanted to speak with a veterinarian. I was originally told by the veterinarian we saw to call if there were any concerns. However, when I contacted the office, I was informed that she was on vacation. I requested a call from any veterinarian in the practice due to the urgency of the situation, but I was told I would need to wait until that specific veterinarian returned. As a concerned pet owner, I found this response extremely disappointing. When a patient's condition is worsening, there should be a process in place for another veterinarian to review the case and provide guidance. Due to the lack of communication and support, I made the decision to transfer my dog to another veterinary facility. My dog is currently receiving care elsewhere and has undergone several hours of additional testing. At this point, his condition has been deemed urgent. While I appreciate the initial efforts made during his visit, I am disappointed by the lack of follow-up and the inability to speak with another veterinarian when I expressed concerns about his declining health. Edit to add; The vet Ace seen, after 6 hours of evaluation, testing and scans. Ace was found to have a large tumor on his kidney. Issues that should've been located May 28th when he was seen by Friarsgate. Friarsgate animal hospital let me down, my children down and my dog

On October 14, 2025 we had to put asleep our 14.5 year dog. He was my life. It was the hardest thing we ever had to do. I still cry everyday over it. Dr. Rickman and the staff were so caring about our needs and feelings. My husband and I were extremely devastated over our loss. Dr. Rickman personally sent us a sympathy card with a sincere handwritten note to us. It meant the absolute world to my husband and myself. Since then we added a puppy to our family. Dr. Rickman just neutered him 2 weeks ago and the surgery went flawlessly. Dr. Rickman and the entire staff was there for us from start to finish. You are not just a random person when you walk through their door. They answered all my hundreds of questions and concerns with such attentiveness. I think it is very important that my veterinarian actually knows me and my animal. Not just from a file. Dr. Rickman is absolutely a genius, a brilliant surgeon, and really cares for the animals. He knows I am a super anxious person and I only want what's best for my baby. He always puts my fears at bay and ALWAYS provides me the truth, even if I don't like the answer. To me, that is how a vet should be. If you are contemplating on switching to Dutch Fork, do yourself a favor and do it. We have only seen Dr. Rickman at Dutch Fork (Except if he was away or in an absolute emergency). I am sure that all the vets are just as attentive and committed as he is. But we will be sticking with Dr. Rickman wherever he goes.

Only when I call do they tell me that they're unable to do anything with him and give me no answers. I don't doubt that they care about the animals that are brought in, but they have failed me many times. When I bring my cat to other vets they have no problems with him. They also prescribed an unnecessarily high dose of gabapentin to "calm him down" that is not recommended by any standards and upon giving it to him he has had horrible side effects that has left me even more stressed. Shame that I trusted a vets opinion.

This time, my sitter did not show up on time, And texted me that she was running a few minutes late...That's fine, things happen! Two hours later, she still had not arrived, which is significant because one of my cats needs to have insulin at a very particular time. I am lucky I give her the shot at the appropriate time, and we left for our trip, for which we were now several hours behind. The Sitter said she would contact the company and get somebody else to cover for her for the rest of my trip. She never did it, so I called the company 30 minutes later, which was the grace period I gave her to take care of the problem. The company said that they would find somebody for the rest of the trip. They did not. I contacted Kelly's Pet Services, and they were on the job immediately! Todd S, one of the owners went to my house, himself, within a few minutes. He checked on both cats, and the diabetic cat hissed at him, which I expected. Because it was not the time of day for her injection, Todd checked on the cats and went back for my kitty's nighttime injection. Todd returned throughout my time away, and was successful in giving my Kitty her insulin injection and in feeding both kitties. Of course, he cleaned the litter box, and even brought my mail in! What amazed me even more was that when I got my invoice upon returning home, the charge was much, much less than the national company I had hired originally to care for my cats. Todd's communication skills were beyond the call of duty. He texted me continually, providing photographs of my diabetic Kitty and letting me know how both cats were doing. I will never use another pet service again! Kelly's Pet Services is the best! They came through for me and my sweet kitty when I was desperate! My cat would have died had not been there to help, as returning home from Louisiana to North Carolina would have been impossible to get there in time for her injection!
