My husband was craving fish and chips, we came across this place. Seems like a place thats been around snd locals go to. Large restaurant. Lots of seating. Also set up for take outs. We were sat. The menu is big, which surprised me, lots of options from fried chicken, wings, burgers, sandwiches, house made pies so on but we are here for the fish & chips. We ordered 2 pieces cod fish & chips 13.99. The server was friendly, our food came in no time. The food came in a disposable plate. Good portion of fish & chips. The fish was nicely cooked and hot in temperature, crispy batter but taste bland, even with the tartar sauce. Tartar sauce could have been better as well. I try added salt and pepper, it was just lacking taste. Fries were good. Overall it was ok.

What can I say about Ches's Fi and Chi that hasn't already been said? One of St. John's long time Fish and Chip joints that most people recall a memory or two dining at. It's truly a St. John's institution. Ches's has been a Newfoundland staple since 1951 and if there's anything they do know, it's how to make a killer fish and chips! Whether you're there for a Cod Bite Special or a Feathers and Fins; you're sure to leave with a full tummy and a nankering for more! With multiple locations around, finding the one you love most could pose a bit of a challenge. This location on Freshwater has been the location I remember going to since I was a child. This week I had the chance to relive some memories and dig in for a feed I certainly won't forget. The service here was on point! The young lady who served us mentioned that she was also the manager and had been with the company for around 5 years. She was delightful and friendly. Made us feel right at home! Proper thing! The fish and chips here are a bit lighter and crispier than the competition, but still equally as delicious! The onion rings are to die for!! Best I have ever had-no lie! One notable is that Ches's makes there own vinegar!! And you can take it home with you in your own souvenir Ches's vinegar bottle for only about $5. A steal if you ask me! While it's been 17 years since my last visit, I remember it like it was yesterday. Just hoping it won't be another 17 years until my next visit.

My friend from Newfoundland told me that I wasn't going to say that I truly experienced NFLD if I didn't go to Ches's, so I went. Let me tell you, she was right!!!! The fish was so fresh, and cooked to perfection! Stuffing and gravy on fries, seriously who eats that? Ok so I tried it and OMG I'm now a believer! Truly the most laid back and comfortable spot to try with super friendly staff, and amazing food. Just try it, you won't regret it!

Ordered the one-piece fish and chips, plus the gravy and dressing on the side. Take-out. I got to Ches's at around 7:30pm. It was pretty empty except for 2 tables and no air conditioning, so I decided to just get take-out. After a short walk back to my hotel, I opened the paper wrapped plate of fish n chips, with high hopes of battered deliciousness. I was thoroughly disappointed to see a flat piece of fish under a pile of browned fries. It just looked kind of sad to me. Took a bite of the fish, not much taste. So I added the dressing (which is like thanksgiving turkey stuffing) and the gravy. It was still mediocre tasting. So I tried the fish with the packaged tartar sauce. The tartar sauce tasted sweet and gross. All in all...I thought Ches's fish and chips was just...meh. The dressing tasted ok though. My dinner came out to be a little over $12. Maybe dining in would be better? Maybe the paper wrapping made it soggy? But I've had fish n chips take out before and it wasn't as disappointing. Sorry Ches's on freshwater Rd! 2 stars.

2-piece fish and chips with gravy and dressing on the side.

Upon arriving in St. John's I discussed Ches's with the locals and although each had their favourite place, Ches's seemed to be the classic tourist stop for fish and chips so it seemed like a must. I went for a 2-piece fish & chips with dressing and gravy. Overall: the fries were golden-brown and soft, the fish was light, the batter crispy, and the tartar sauce was tangy. If you're offered dressing and gravy with your meal, consider taking it - the dressing is a mixture of seasoned breadcrumbs. When combined with the gravy and fries it seems like the Newfoundland' version of a poutine. This makes me reminiscent of a post-thanksgiving poutine, minus the cheese curds.

Top notch service here!…read more Charissa made me feel at home at the bar. I got fresh tasty oysters, the code tongues, and fries. The oysters were small but so refreshing. The cod tongues are a unique item in just had to try and they tasted really good. The fries came out hot but I would say they lacked the crunch I really enjoy.. I still found myself eating them all though. The fry sauces were great, I think all made in house. What I really loved was the homemade peri peri sauce with the oysters... I put it on my cod and fries.. game changer!!! The place is beautifully designed, small and quant, and a good place to hang out. The rotating drink special was a frozen Paloma which was nicely garnished and had a natural wheat straw. The chef gave me a nice little gift at the end of my meal which I appreciated greatly.

There weren't many places open late downtown for dinner, we went to two places prior to get food…read morebut the kitchen was pretty much closed. Luckily we made our way to Rabble, and they seated us at the bar immediately upon arrival. We were very happy to find that they were open late. I thought the decor and aesthetic was nice, cozy, and clean. I loved the dishware and houndstooth napkins. First, I got their blended Passionfruit Guava (?) mocktail. I'm pretty sure those were the flavors. It was citrus-y, sweet, and refreshing. We ended up ordering the Half Chicken, Brown Butter Turnip Papperdelle, and the Seasonal Parisian Gnocchi for 2. Everything was absolutely wonderful. The Half Chicken was flavorful and the juicy. And the skin was the best part! It had a beautiful crisp. The Brown Butter Turnip Papperdelle was nice, I was very impressed with how they made it "noodle" like. The texture was good, and I loved how it was under a mountain of parmigiano hehe. Lastly, the Seasonal Parisian Gnocchi was a hit. The gnocchi had the perfect texture, it was chewy and soaked up the sauce very well. And the sauce! It was creamy, savory, and just fantastic. I've actually been raving about this gnocchi to everyone, and it has stayed on my mind ever since we ate it. I think that was the best gnocchi I've ever tasted. The only reason why I gave it four stars was the wait time. We came a good 30ish minutes before the kitchen closed and I'm pretty sure we put in our orders with enough time. However we waited a lot longer than we anticipated. Nevertheless, we had a wonderful time. We actually visited St John's for our anniversary and celebrated it here for dinner, and this was a dinner and day we'll never forget. We'd love to come back for another anniversary, and I hope that the gnocchi will still be there haha. Thank you!
