My husband was craving fish and chips, we came across this place. Seems like a place thats been around snd locals go to. Large restaurant. Lots of seating. Also set up for take outs. We were sat. The menu is big, which surprised me, lots of options from fried chicken, wings, burgers, sandwiches, house made pies so on but we are here for the fish & chips. We ordered 2 pieces cod fish & chips 13.99. The server was friendly, our food came in no time. The food came in a disposable plate. Good portion of fish & chips. The fish was nicely cooked and hot in temperature, crispy batter but taste bland, even with the tartar sauce. Tartar sauce could have been better as well. Whether you're there for a Cod Bite Special or a Feathers and Fins; you're sure to leave with a full tummy and a nankering for more! With multiple locations around, finding the one you love most could pose a bit of a challenge. This location on Freshwater has been the location I remember going to since I was a child. This week I had the chance to relive some memories and dig in for a feed I certainly won't forget. The service here was on point! The young lady who served us mentioned that she was also the manager and had been with the company for around 5 years. She was delightful and friendly. Made us feel right at home! Proper thing! The fish and chips here are a bit lighter and crispier than the competition, but still equally as delicious! The onion rings are to die for!! Best I have ever had-no lie! One notable is that Ches's makes there own vinegar!! And you can take it home with you in your own souvenir Ches's vinegar bottle for only about $5. A steal if you ask me! Ordered the one-piece fish and chips, plus the gravy and dressing on the side. Take-out. I got to Ches's at around 7:30pm. It was pretty empty except for 2 tables and no air conditioning, so I decided to just get take-out. After a short walk back to my hotel, I opened the paper wrapped plate of fish n chips, with high hopes of battered deliciousness. I was thoroughly disappointed to see a flat piece of fish under a pile of browned fries. It just looked kind of sad to me. Took a bite of the fish, not much taste. So I added the dressing (which is like thanksgiving turkey stuffing) and the gravy. It was still mediocre tasting. So I tried the fish with the packaged tartar sauce. The tartar sauce tasted sweet and gross. All in all...I thought Ches's fish and chips was just...meh. The dressing tasted ok though. My dinner came out to be a little over $12. Maybe dining in would be better? Maybe the paper wrapping made it soggy? But I've had fish n chips take out before and it wasn't as disappointing. Sorry Ches's on freshwater Rd! 2 stars. read more

We ordered take out from Ches's our first night here in St. John's as we wanted to chill out at the hotel. We had the salmon bites with chips, two cod fillets with chips & a side order of gravy. They gave us a tax free order. I think because we paid cash. But they didn't notify us that there's a delivery charge of $10.00. Not being locals I was a bit miffed. As for quality of food, the chips were pretty ordinary & greasy. Their gravy is delicious. For the fish I found the salmon bites over battered & oily. Hubby's cod fillets weren't as greasy or heavily battered. Not sure if I would order from here again. If I do I will order the steamed fish without batter. read more

A fun experience at this restaurant! My family and I had been wanting to experience some local cuisine and enjoy some fish. Ches's is famous for its cod which I had never had before. Suffice to say, it was delicious. I had the fish and chips with a Coors Light. My dad was introduced to the Iceberg beer for the first time which he quite liked, despite not being much of a beer drinker. My mom, who isn't really a fish eater, ate all of the cod. Our waitress was really sweet and took care of everyone well despite it being busy and she being on her own to look after everyone. I was visiting St. John's and was told Ches's was THE place for fish and chips. The food was mediocre and the customer service was HORRIBLE. I placed an order for pick up for two piece fish and chips and chips, dressing and gravy. At the time of the order I requested to have the dressing on top of the fries and when I got home with the order the dressing was on the bottom and there was no tartar sauce in the bag. When I called to let them know about my dissatisfaction, I was told I had to pick up the tartar sauce from the counter (I was not told this at the time of pick up) and the lady also argued with me that I did not ask to have the dressing on top of the fries (which I did). I expressed that I did not want to argue with her and that if they weren't going to do anything I would not be ordering from there again. She said "ok dear". I went for a 2-piece fish & chips with dressing and gravy. Overall: the fries were golden-brown and soft, the fish was light, the batter crispy, and the tartar sauce was tangy. If you're offered dressing and gravy with your meal, consider taking it - the dressing is a mixture of seasoned breadcrumbs. When combined with the gravy and fries it seems like the Newfoundland' version of a poutine. This makes me reminiscent of a post-thanksgiving poutine, minus the cheese curds. read more

The staff is friendly, the restaurant is clean, and the food is great pub-grade food (pub grade=lots of fried stuff). While the restaurant is clean, you'll never confuse it with being high-end. Vinyl table cloths, cheap art, and oddly small salt and pepper shakers adorn the place. A local favorite is apparently cod tongue, which I would have eaten but they were out... not sure if I missed out on something delightful or dodged a bullet. If you're in St. Johns, try Ches's. Went up to St. john's with a friend for a weekend whale adventure and asked a few cabbies where we should get fish n' chips. We were given a handful of recommendations, but Ches's was mentioned multiple times, so we opted for there. This was some of the yummiest fish I've ever had! Light and flaky, nicely battered and fried. So simple, but so delicious. The chips (fries, whatever) were good too, though pretty standard. It's hard to mess up a french fry. I also tried a QV Iceberg Beer (quite crisp and refreshing, but very low on flavor) and a QV Honey Brown (darker much more to my taste, nice honey touch). The meal on the whole was quite delicious and from a New Yorker's perspective, seriously cheap! I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone venturing up into this little, quaint town. read more

This review is almost 3 years overdue, but better late than never eh? I just had to write this review because this is why I love Fish & Chips with the dressing (Newfie fries...yum!!). This is the first place we ate upon our arrival in St. John's. We were tired and hungry. Because of this, of course the place was busy and we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. It was a LONG 10 minutes...haha. As soon as we got seated we had to wait once again. Service was a bit too slow for our liking, maybe because we were hungry and there were 7 of us. But once we got our food it was pure heaven. I don't know if it was because we were hungry after a 14 hour ferry ride to the Rock, but it was one of the best I've ever eaten. I tried the Newfie Fries for the first time and I am a fan!! I love it! For the rest of our visit in Newfoundland all I thought about was the first time I tried those Newfield Fries! It's a charming place, and yes they do give you a certificate for eating there if you're from out of town. I can't get over the chips in St. Johns though. Just ordered a poutine from ches's on freshwater road and im very dissapointed in doing so. The service was a terrible time to begin with. No manners were used whatsoever. They were treating me as if my customer service was an annoyance. When I started to eat the poutine I noticed it was very dry and both the gravy and cheese curds were just placed on the top layer only. I would recommend going anywhere else to order your food. I write this from the perspective of a wheelchair user. Yelp shows Ches's as being wheelchair accessible. We drove into town a few nights ago on this basis to try it out. We got there only to find a significant step barring access. My wife went inside to see if they perhaps had a portable ramp as many businesses do. They did not and seemed indifferent to the need for one. I can't comment on the food quality because they won't allow me in to try it. read more

This is pretty much the default fish 'n' chips joint for visitors to Newfoundland. The only competing institution is Big R, and I found their fry to be darker and greasier (though tasty). Ches's does fish 'n' chips right, and also offers scallops and chicken in the same fry for the less fish-inclined. For aficionados or tourists, they also offer fried cod tongues, and thoughtfully provide you with a certificate if you're a tourist who tries them. Do so, the texture is a bit gelatinous but the flavour is just fine, and it's an experience. Overall, neat little place to try a local specialty. Not too far a walk from downtown, and has some required eating to accomplish. Nothing fancy, but I took a Colombian-Canadian girl from Toronto up there and managed to make a good impression, so that just adds to my enthusiastic recommendation. read more

I am horrified by the terrible customer service my family has received from Ches's today. We had placed an order for delivery which took a very long time to come (the lady on the phone quoted 45 minutes but it took over 1h10m) and didn't receive all of our items. My mother had ordered a Dr. Pepper and confirmed with the lady that they had it. We instead received Pepsi, no fries, no cheese on the cheeseburgers, and were missing a dressing. Naturally my Mother called about it. She informed the guy who answered the phone that these things were missing/incorrect. He said it'd be over an hour to fix anything and that they always tell their customers 45 mins to an hour, they did't have Dr. Pepper, and that dressing didn't come with ches's choice special. He proceeded to scream at my mother. There is NO NEED to SCREAM at a customer. While Ches's has now replaced the missing items it doesn't fix the fact my mother was yelled at. What kind of company screams at their customers because they made a mistake, not the customer? That's no way to treat people. read more
