The decor of this place is like something from a historical novel. The owner happened to decorate the house and each room in the style of what the classic authors such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen portrayed in their novels. The host is quite attentive and great to talk to. We had some great conversations with her during breakfast time, and learned a lot about the surrounding areas. It's in a perfect location, only half an hour from Snowshoe Mountain and the Greenbrier River trail in West Virginia and near some beautiful trails in Highland County. I highly recommend the place.

I'm glad that I read about the lack of WiFi and cellphone service in advance so I was prepared. I took it as a break to spend time with my friends and husband - a time to disconnect. They also host spiritual conferences there, we were told. I can imagine it being a good place for a church retreat - the rates for conferences were very reasonable - advertised in the $400 range for a full weekend of meals and activities. I can imagine this business growing as the location is extremely beautiful and it's a powerful thing to disconnect and reconnect with loved ones.

This is a great place to visit if you're into fly fishing, for sure! Definitely a nice place for those who want very basic amenities as well, as the lodge is rather basic in what it has to offer. There's no wi-fi here, which is fine with us... No AT&T service and rarely you'll get 3G of Sprint, but there is a slight amount of Verizon Wireless outside. They have a TV with an assortment of DVDs to watch movies. They have a full kitchen and roomy bedrooms that will accommodate 11 people. Bathing was tough here, as the master bedroom's shower stall was so narrow that it's tough to use in a functional way. The bathtub upstairs hardly drained, so you're standing in your waste water - yuk. Speaking of water, the water in the faucets is clearly from a well, which is fine, but it's loaded with iron and smells of that. They have a nice, big fireplace, which they will supply plenty of wood to use. There's no fireplace, but there is an oil burning furnace with a thermostat to supply heat. You are permitted to bring pets, for an additional charge. The history of this place is nice, as it's still in the same family and nearly 100 years old. It's quaint and quiet, especially in the evening. It really does need an overhaul cleaning though, as the kitchen is loaded with all the stuff left from various tenants in the past and the bookshelf is dusty and loaded with lots of books that haven't been touched. Several bulbs were burned out. Again, if you are bringing food, bringing a large family and don't mind the shower issues, it might work for you.

The skies are so clear, with so little "light pollution" you can see the Milky Way at night with the naked eye. Fish in Dragonfly pond, hike the trails, climb to the top of "The Ridge," ride horses, dip in the natural Warm Springs, visit the George Washington National Forest, go "antiquing," visit The Homestead for music, fireworks and "high tea," eat a 5-star meal at The Waterworks at The Gristmill Inn -- all these activities are literally within a 10-mile radius of the farm. Claudia and Lea are friendly, helpful and respectful of your privacy as guests. Could not ask for more gracious hosts. Highly recommended, and we will be returning. Definitely.

You can hike + bike straight from the house. The views are gorgeous. There are two small houses on the property, a horse farm. The houses are perfect for two people. I suspect it would be good for a small family too.
