They make a hearty breakfast to start you off each day. They are about 6 miles from the Cass railroad so a good choice if your planning to ride the train and maybe explore the other things in the area. We stayed 3 nights and had a great time. They have free Wi-Fi, but there is only a small TV in family room. There is no cell service in the area, but if you have the latest version of software for your phone most now allow phone service over Wi-Fi. This way you can get mail, make a call or text someone in the morning or evening. The rest of the time you should be out exploring the things in the area. Highly recommend if you are staying in the area that you give them a call book a room.

Maybe I stayed at a different place. We arrived at around 7 PM after a miserable drive, and when we got there, it took a while for someone to come to the door. Once Larry answered, I didn't feel as though we were greeted very kindly. Conversation was awkward and uncomfortable (I was there with 3 other people). We were asking for dinner recommendations, and the only one given to us was very vague, and when pushed for further comment, Larry did not seem to want to help us out. The drive to Snowshoe is horrible and long. I would get sick and nervous having to go up the mountain 3 times a day (there is NO OTHER PLACE to go where the B&B is located). We were also informed that they like guests to arrive back by 10PM, which made me feel a bit weird since I'm supposed to be on vacation. I almost felt like I was staying with a relative who went to bed early. We rushed to get back to the B&B on time, and by then, we were ready for bed. Our rooms were located upstairs, with a bathroom at the top of the staircase that has quite a step-up into it. You should be careful when entering/exiting. The shower is a claw-foot tub, which I usually love, but you have to hold the shower head the entire time and there is no where to hook it so water still hits you. I ended up spraying water all over the bathroom because I couldn't get situated. The curtain also sucks in and clings to your body. It was unpleasant. Our bedroom was a decent size with a queen-sized bed. Sadly, the bed and frame seem to be really old, which caused the bed to make loud noises any time you moved. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep the entire weekend. Breakfast is served at 8AM-8:30AM, which made me unhappy due to not being a morning person. It would have been okay if the breakfast was good, but sadly, it was not. I had been told of a large, wonderful breakfast. We got a casserole dish of baked oatmeal and 5-6 sausage patties. The innkeepers sit and watch you while you eat, which seems odd to me. I felt rushed and like I had to keep constant conversation whenever we were in a common area with them. I felt so uncomfortable staying there while my group skiied that I ended up going on the mountain and sitting in Starbucks for 6 hours each day. They also had poor wifi that barely worked in the downstairs room, and it was obsolete upstairs. I'm sure that Larry and Paula mean well, but personally I found the experience to be quite miserable and could not wait to leave and go home.

Fast forward ten years later and here we are, back at the Hummingbird Inn celebrating our 10 year engagement anniversary. In the past ten years, we have traveled far and wide, to hotels, restaurants, national parks and overseas. We had no idea what to expect about the Hummingbird Inn after being to so many places since than. Once we arrived, the Hummingbird Inn was not only just as romantic as we remember, but even better than we remember. There is just something about this place that is so serene and peaceful; the details that go into every room and feature are spectacular. This by far is the best place to rekindle the fire with that special someone. As for the location, the inn is located in a small secluded mountain town with a nearby train that passes by once a day, which added to the quaint romantic atmosphere. You can easily explore the Shenandoah and come back to enjoy a nice bottle of wine on the deck or their newly designed gazebo, built by the owners themselves. The jetted tub in the Alleghany room is still one of the nicest tubs that we have ever had. The new owners, Sandra and Jeff, have done an amazing job at maintaining and adding to this beautiful bed and breakfast. Sandra, with a hospitality background, is a very bubbly, friendly and gracious host, giving you a list of things to do in the area. Jeff, with a carpentry background, maintains everything beautifully. Each of their breakfasts were delicious and super accommodating in terms of dietary restrictions. For instance, I wanted plant based meat instead of real meat and they accommodated that request. They even acknowledged our anniversary by giving us some complimentary soap that they sold exclusively at the inn. In addition to soap, they also provide the purchase of their linens, some of the best linens that you will ever experience. We are very thankful to have returned to our little piece of heaven after all these years. Thanks to Sandra and Jeff, our piece of romantic paradise still exists to this day and has many years to go. We plan to celebrate every milestone anniversary at the Hummingbird Inn...no matter what or where life takes us.

The old house is beautifully appointed and so tasteful. Hosts Sandra and Jeff super friendly and thoughtful. The breakfasts were outstanding, really you couldn't do better in a 5 star restaurant. Breakfast at 9 but coffee available earlier. Home made brownies and muffins in the afternoon, coffee and tea always available. A frige stocked with water and soft drinks. Bathroom stocked with nice toiletries and slippers and bathrobes. Dog dishes and mats for the pooch. The lawn and planting are so beautiful. Perfect for enjoying coffee. The whole house is open for your use (but dog must stay in room). There's TV, DVDs, books to share. You can only get Verizon cell service unfortunately. The decor of this place is like something from a historical novel. The owner happened to decorate the house and each room in the style of what the classic authors such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen portrayed in their novels.
