We are so impressed with Chez Nous, the delicious meals or individual items available, their shift from catering Galas of all sizes to family gourmet food during COVID with no parties, meetings, events. They have curbside pickup, order by phone with option to pay at that time which makes pick-up lightning fast. They have now added delivery. My experience with Chez Nous was disappointing, particularly given the importance of the occasion and the expectations I had based on the restaurant's reputation. I was referred to Chez Nous by a friend from New Orleans when I was looking for a caterer for my son's medical school graduation celebration. We expected about 30 guests, most of whom were coming from out of town and were excited to experience New Orleans food. The initial communication with the owner was good. I received an extensive menu, reviewed the options with my son, who considers himself a "foodie," and we ultimately agreed on a menu that included tea sandwiches, smothered turnip greens, grillades, cheese grits, baked brie, bourbon-and-brown-sugar ham with buttermilk biscuits, hummingbird cake, and spinach salad. A couple of months before the celebration, my brother and his wife joined me in New Orleans for Match Day. While we were there, we stopped by Chez Nous to introduce ourselves and make sure everything was on track. Unfortunately, the reception by Ben, the owner was very cold and made us feel as though we were intruding rather than welcome guests. I chose to give the owner the benefit of the doubt and assumed it was simply a bad day. With the graduation only about 45 days away, I also decided not to start over with another caterer. We confirmed delivery for May 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. On the day of the celebration, I had someone at the house by noon to receive the food. The caterer actually arrived around 1:00 p.m., which was earlier than expected, and I appreciated that. Unfortunately, the food itself was a major disappointment. Several dishes--including the greens, grillades, and cheese grits--were excessively salty. The tea sandwiches and biscuits were dry. The baked brie with fresh fruit was good, but the spinach salad was not prepared as requested. I specifically asked for the feta to be served on the side because we had a vegan guest, but the feta was mixed throughout the salad. The biggest disappointment was the hummingbird cake. It was essentially inedible. The cake appeared to be a sheet cake with an extremely thick layer of icing, while the cake itself was so soggy that it appeared underbaked. No one ate it, and we ultimately had to throw it away the following day. After the celebration, I contacted the owner to express my concerns about the quality of the food. I never received a response. I also found it surprising that no one from Chez Nous followed up afterward to ask how the food or service had been. Given that this was an important milestone for my son and a significant catering order, I expected at least some acknowledgment or concern when I expressed my dissatisfaction. I recognize that every business can have an off day, and I generally try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I was also particularly surprised by my experience because Chez Nous has many positive reviews. Unfortunately, my experience did not live up to those expectations. I will give three stars solely because the food arrived earlier than the agreed-upon delivery time. However, the quality of much of the food, the failure to accommodate the dietary request, the disappointing cake, and most importantly, the lack of any response to my concerns left me very disappointed. This was supposed to be a memorable celebration of my son's tremendous accomplishment. I wanted to provide our family and guests with a wonderful New Orleans culinary experience. Oh, so you don't want to cook or bake, but you want to give the appearance that you did? AND that you did it well? Head to Chez Nous, cheater. I've only ever had the desserts. Two different bars, actually. They were so good though, so perfectly decadent, that they were worth the sugar and fat content. They were worth the extra exercise class I'd have to endure so that I could work the treats off. (How often does one think THAT?) If the desserts were that good, the rest of the food must also be fantastic. I got the lemon bar and the divine hash bar. There were about six choices including a few other chocolate brownie type creations, a blonde brownie, and a key lime bar. The two I got were a perfect Yin-Yang. Lemon zesty pillow and a dense chocolate brownie with a layer of nuts and chocolate ganache frosting. I eyeballed the sandwich fillings such as pimento cheese and curried chicken salad sitting in little tubs (it was around second lunchtime), and also the crawfish pies, and well, the hummingbird cake. The food looked wonderfully fresh and homemade (literally as the case was) as I wound my way through a each room in the house. I was biking through the beautiful west New Orleans neighborhoods around Audubon Park. I made my way over to Magazine St to grab a late lunch. I saw a Whole Foods grocery chain but thought to myself "No way, I'm in New Orleans! Why would I eat anywhere other than a local eatery!" Chez Nous did NOT disappoint. Gourmet southern cooking and baking that was MmmmMmmm Good!!! The Chicken & Andouille Gumbo with rice is awesome (honestly more flavorful than the one I had at Emmeril Delmonico the night before). The various salads are bursting with flavor, like the Pineapple Cucumber & Lime salad, as well as the Texas Cavier (Black beans, black-eyed peas, chick peas, red onion, cilantro, jalapeño peppers, vinegar and olive oil). They let you sample any of the lunch and dinner items. In fact, they have various dishes on a warmer you can sample on your own. I tried the Crab au Gratin (wow!!), Baked Penne w Italian Sausage, and Shrimp & Andouille Pot Pie. They were all rich and delicious. The baked desserts are ohhh so good (Petite Gateaux, a blonde pastry brownie with an almond filling, and the Drop Dead Hash, aka Heavenly Ash, a soft chocolate brownie covered with chocolate walnuts, marshmallow, and a milk chocolate coating). The chef/owner is a perfect gentleman and very accommodating. They're geared up mostly for gourmet take-out (to reheat at home), but they'll gladly warm things up for you to eat there. The food is so flavorful (perfectly salted and spiced). Absolutely worth a repeat trip. In fact I think I'm gonna return to pack my suit case with some of their baked goods. read more

My FIL used to get half of all his meals here. They have a variety of NOLA specialty items (shrimp creole, stuffed bell peppers, etc) both fresh and frozen. They also do catering for events. My only criticism is that since much of their takeout clientele are seniors, everything needs salt. But that's easy to add. read more

Pro: variety of lousiana food (you WILL find something you like), fully cooked, frozen so keeps well, offers samples of daily soup, WINE!!!!! Cons: variety of louisiana food (i want everything), was unsure and unclear if they served fully cooked lunch- did not appear to have a place to sit and lunch. Full Disclosure: I walked in and was so excited by the variety of local specialty faire that I spent almost $70 on frozen food I wanted to try. The ambiance is adorable. I was drawn to the shot gun style house on magazine by the chalkboard that promise crab cakes. Nuff said. Even though it is a gourmet market- I was not prepared for the huge freezers of... well... Louisiana stuff. FOOD The single item that was not worth it- The king cake. This is not the place to buy a king cake. They are huge and pretty (so pretty- my non-edible- week old king cake from chez nous is encased in my glass cake plate on the dining room table as a center piece). It is too doughy for my taste, and a little tough. That said: there are things this place does really well- and my greedy stomach wants to try a whole bunch of stuff to find all of my favourites. I will tell you that I like more spicey, savory and complex flavours. I loved that all entrees were fully cooked and frozen - so they kept nicely and heated well. Guacamole- not frozen- my hands down favourite. I ate all of it in one night. I put it out for others to share with me while watching a movie- and caught myself hoarding it. Different, fresh and well seasoned. Deviled eggs- needed more seasoning Salsa- loved the whole tomatoes and chopped onion and bell pepper, needed salt and lime juice crawfish bread- no greasy- liked it a lot. went well with a decent cab crawfish pie: GET THIS!!!!! awesome. Looks single serve but can comfortably feed 2. Huge pie, lots of crawfish- not a thin soupy sauce, thicker and beautiful pastry. So good. Seafood Stuffed Eggplant casserole- YUM. The only way I knew there was eggplant in there was by the seeds. Not fried, slimy or greasy. Crab cakes with remoulade sauce- heated in the oven- came out so nicely. They are extremely accomodating and responsive. I ordered finger sandwhiches for a large tea party, 4 dozen women. Some of them were vegan. When I opened the boxes, I could not tell which ones were vegan so I called and they sent someone to my house to sort out the sandwhiches! Can't beat service like that.
