I love that there's a healthier food truck option - the owner is super amicable and will chat with you. The fact that he lets frequent customers help him out on the truck or have choices named after them just goes to show the relationships he makes with his customers. My review will be a bit narrow because I only have gotten the chicken banh mi, spicy - it's interesting because it's not an Asian truck but I think they have a great take on it! They use fresh ingredients (cucumber, cilantro, carrots) and juicy chicken. I never bothered to order anything else because I was always happy with their chicken banh mi! One of my favorite food trucks on Spruce so far! It is refreshing to find a truck serving a variety of healthy options. I tried the Chicken Bahn Mi, or Vietnamese sandwich. Though lacking in authenticity, the baguette was delightful and the ingredients fresh! I was a bit skeptical about the wasabi mayonnaise put into the sandwich since I am not a fan of wasabi, but the wasabi flavor was minimal and actually worked quite well into the flavor combo. For $5, it is a great deal and comes with a banana and a drink. Many vegetarian and gluten free options available as well. Other menu items include more "french" sandwiches, quinoa salads and berry salads. I definitely see this becoming one of my regular go to spots. read more

I was craving a bahn mi for lunch, but working in University City typically leaves me without any bahn mi options. Rather than venture into center city for my fix, I decided to wander around on campus at the lunch hour. I happened upon Chez Yasmine at 37th and Spruce in front of Vance Hall and was immediately excited to find tofu bahn mi on the menu, along with a number of other veg-friendly options. Woo, that was one spicy sandwich. I asked the food truck chef to go light on the spice and he obliged, but I also made the mistake of biting into one of the jalepenos. Yowza. It was delicious, overall. The spiced ground tofu, slices of cucumber and shredded carrots were nestled inside of a delightful crusty baguette. It was very nice, and I was especially excited to have a vegetarian sandwich to add to my work lunch options. I'll definitely come back and try out one of the other vegetarian options like the Gretchen quinoa salad or the Vegetarian Couscous. The owner/chef was very enthusiastic and warm. Chez Yasmine just had a soft launch today and will be opening shop on 11/07/11 . I had the privilege of tasting the Vegetarian Banh Mi sandwich and I was really impressed. The bread was the best I have ever tasted at a food court and the reason is that the food cart gets it from a Farmers Bakery in the city. The sandwich contained Tofu , ginger , carrots, cucumber , jalapeno peppers and mayonnaise. They have a diverse menu with some really unique dishes. This food cart is a must -try. read more

Pretty awesome deal for $6! I came here unexpectedly with some friends. I'd heard of the truck for its lovely vegetarian options, but the price tag I'd been hearing of ~$6-7 had prevented me from actually ever checking it out. However, there I found myself, peer-pressured into actually standing in front of the truck to look at the menu--and what a lovely surprise I came across! The price listed for each item covers the item, a fruit, and a bottle of water! So that's actually totally worth the price--especially because the food is pretty good. I appreciated their very well-labeled menu, and ended up getting a Vegetarian Bánh Mì (and a bottle of water and a banana!) It was quite flavorful; I could taste all of the individual flavors and textures really well, and the bread in particular was awesome. However, it wasn't really filling... but I guess that's what the fruit is for? Will definitely be back to try the other options! More people need to know about this great deal. read more

I just hit up this new street vender. The menu was very interesting, because it was different. It's Tunisian and Sweedish. It is heavy on the vegetarian sandwiches/dishes, with a few fish ones, mainly tuna and salmon. They did say meat dishes are on their way. I got the Tuniasn Fish, which is tuna and some veggies. It's a very fresh tasting sandwich. They offered me hot sauce, but when I questioned it's hotness, I was told it's hot in a tone that suggested it's more than just a little kick. Given this information, I passed on it. The drawback here is that the sandwich, while bursting with freshness, lacked much needed additional flavor. If I liked my hot sauce more on the spicy side, perhaps this would have done it. But since I did not, I got a sandwich that needed more flavor. A medium and non-spicy sauce would be a good start. Perhaps some seasoning would help too. And, this is especially the case since the Tuna was literally canned tuna with no sauce or seasoning. For those who like fresh food that lacks additional flavor, this might be your thing, but it's not for me. read more

I believe this was my first food cart in Philly (gasp!). In case you haven't been to one either, the gist is that you can get high quality food (or varying) really inexpensively. $6 lunch inexpensively. After lunching in NYC on the regular, this blew my mind. Chez Yasmine has a menu of interesting lunch options, the one recommended to me was the tofu banh mi - and it was awesome. Another vegan/vegetarian friendly dish was the couscous, which I'll probably get if I get to visit again. We went around 1pm and there was no line, quick friendly service, and every order gets water and a piece of fruit thrown in. That's hard to beat. read more

Where did this food truck even come from?! I was amazed at the creativity, freshness, and unique ingredients in the food choices from Chez Yasmine. University City will always surprise by their food carts, and this is definitely a manifestation of this! I got the Nicky, a smoked salmon and caviar (among some other ingredients) on a crusty roll. I have to admit, it didn't seem like all contents of the sandwich went together, but the taste such logic. And what food truck carries caviar?! Great care is put into their meals, so sometimes the line takes time to wind down. This is a good place to stop at if you're not in a rush. read more

I love this food truck! They have great food and the owner is very friendly. I usually get the Salmon Sandwich or the Swedish Berry Salad and they're both delicious! I have tried other stuff on the menu like the Chicken Banh Mi and the Chicken Couscous but found the previous two to be better. All the entrees come with a free banana and bottle of water which I think is very nice. The only problem with this food truck is that it closes relatively early or runs out of its best options. One of my favorite food trucks on Penn's campus! If I had to describe the feel of Chez Yasmine in one word, I would say elegant. From the crusty baguette sandwiches to the sophisticated salads, everything on the menu is delicious. Yes it's a little more expensive than some, but you're paying for quality, plus you get a piece of fruit and a bottle of water. I've kept coming back because of the unique menu options and the friendly service (the owner has a special place in his heart for his regulars--strike up a conversation while you're waiting for your food and get to know him, he's a sweetheart!). I've tried almost everything on the menu, and some of my favorites (in no particular order) are the Wistar (pesto, brie, avocado with chicken and/or grilled mushrooms on a baguette), the chicken banh mi (light and fresh), and the Menange a Trois (perfectly crispy, mustard-y grilled cheese with a cup of the soup of the day, which is always delicious!). Once in a while I treat myself to the flavorful couscous as well, which usually comes vegetarian but you can add chicken and on some days, lamb. The lamb is a little pricier but totally worth it--so tender, and the flavor complements the root vegetables and harissa sauce wonderfully. read more

I used to love this place, but the owner is a rude and obnoxious person who thinks he is God's gift to food trucks. Experience today: I ordered a sandwich, waited for 10 minutes as he served other customers. After 10 mins he asked me again what I would like to order (completely forgot that I was in front of him minutes earlier) and told me the food was out. When I let him know that he took my order minutes ago and that he should have let me know the food was out then, he flipped out and started throwing tantrum like a typical French. I wasn't super thrilled with the service or the food here. I've been dying to try Chez Yasmine since freshman year, and when I finally got around to it junior year I was pretty disappointed. I ordered the Wistar-- how could I pass up a sandwich with literally ALL of my favorite ingredients packed into one? Brie, avocado, mushrooms, pesto... I was surprised by the high price... almost $7 for a food truck lunch? Nightmare. Also, the sandwich was deceivingly big. The baguette looks big upon first glance, but it really is not filling at all. I was hungry again after an hour or so, so obviously the $7 wasn't worth it. The filling was also underwhelming. Not enough cheese, not enough avocado, not enough pesto... I just wanted more all around. The service was also kind of a turn-off. When I said I wanted the vegetarian Wistar, the guy behind the truck snapped at me, gave me sass, and said "it has a name you know." I wasn't sure if he was joking around or not. I was confused because the truck has 2 menus-- one that is the older menu and one that is the newer menu, so there were like 4 different vegetarian Wistar sandwiches with different names. Sassy service really is enough to keep me away from a restaurant/truck. Overall, disappointed. Not sure why people keep coming back. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with this food truck. The hate mostly comes from the empty wallet after a week of Chez Yasmine indulgences. Sure, it's cheaper than any restaurant on campus, but it's also probably the most expensive food truck and relatively not filling. The love side? The sandwiches are guaranteed to be absolutely delicious. I'm a big fan of the chicken wistar. It comes with chicken, obviously, but also has brie, grilled mushroom, avocado, and most importantly, the classic pesto sauce. The taste is phenomenal, and you leave with a banana and bottled water. Service is friendly if you're on the owner's good side. Unfortunately, we've yet to get on first-name basis so I'm one of the un-loved children. Love the veggie couscous from this food cart! I have only had that same item on several occasions. First of all, it is pretty healthy but I also find the couscous and veggies tasty. I have heard some folks say that it is not spicy, and as a spicy-hot food lover I still enjoyed this mildly spiced yet flavorful dish. The portions are usually sufficient for two meals especially with that extra fruit. Another big plus for me is the location/convenience because it is so close to work. If you want to try something different from the regular Chinese/Mexican food trucks, this is place to go. read more

Based on the food alone, this is one of the best food cart options on the UPenn campus. The sandwiches are unique and delicious, though a bit on the pricey side. The Swedish salmon sandwich is by far one of the best items on their menu. As a bonus, they also offer you a free water bottle and fruit. That said, the cart is not well managed. The owners are friendly, but a bit strange and not very experienced in the food business. They are also terrible about giving correct change, so be careful to count what they hand you after you pay. I feel like I've really given this cart a fair shot and I'd like to present you with the facts on why I came to this one star decision. I've been twice, here are my experiences. First, I walk up to the cart and assess the situation, the owner is outside the car. I immediately ask him to suggest the best thing on the menu. Often thins is the first thing on the menu. He avoids the question. I ask him other questions and each time he avoids answering. If you wonder I work in an atmosphere where concise effective communication is key. I'm ordering lunch, not out to discuss whatever you want to bounce around. After a whole hoopla he asks if I'm hungry, I say yes, and suggests the Vegetarian Couscous, fine. They make it, it takes too long because there is now a line and the coordination inside the truck is lacking. The taste of the couscous is lacking depth and the vegetables are of strange consistencies. Do not like at all, very mediocre, ESPECIALLY for that price! Although I've never made couscous I've tried many couses and am sure I could do just as well if not better on my first time. The second time I patronized Chez Yasmine I purchased the Swedish Salmon Smörgås. It was one delicious sandwich, but it took 15 minutes to make!!! It was also very small and cost more than twice the cost of a whole loaf of the bread. When ordered I guess I didn't account for the extra time it takes to put caviar and capers on wheat bread.... On top of that Jihed stops making my sandwich to take pictures of his customers. I find this incredibly strange to the point that it kind of scares me. I wouldn't mind an explanation from any employee associated with the buisness to explain the situation to me because my imagination has run away with the possibilities. The fact that the owner takes pictures of his customers with his DSLR and the reasons below are my main motivations to discontinue my patronage of Chez Yasmine. Owner Jihed, here's what it comes down to: Your cart is too expensive, the portions are too small, and the dishes are too hard to make causing your customers to wait too long. read more

The first time i had the veggie banh mi and the second time the salmon sandwich (soon to be named the Nikki I hear after one of the trucks avid followers). i've been going here regularly since it opened. definitely the most original truck on campus. maybe anywhere. the food is always fresh and is healthier than anything around (puts magic carpet to shame). i've had almost everything on the menu but i think my favorite is the wistar-a mushroom, pesto, and brie sandwich served warm on a fresh baked baguette. i'd also suggest the berry salad when it's available. it has a drizzle of rose water that really complements the flavors of the berries. no matter what you get, you get a free bottle of water and piece of fruit. the fruit is usually a banana which (i'm not quite sure how) is always, always perfectly ripe. another great thing about the truck is the owner. he's a really interesting guy who makes great conversation. i'd recommend going here before it gets super popular which i predict will happen pretty soon. read more

I have been hearing that this is one of the best food trucks on Penn's campus and I can't believe it took me this long to try it out! I ordered the Nikki (the smoked salmon sandwich on a baguette), and I loved every bite. The Nikki comes with smoked salmon, cucumbers, radishes, hard-boiled egg, capers, caviar, with wasabi mayonnaise. The foot-long baguette was crusty on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and the ingredients packed inside had the perfect crunch and freshness. Good value with a sandwich, banana, and bottle of water, and awesome, incredibly warm and friendly service. The owner told me I would love this sandwich, and I certainly did! Ji doesn't just have customers, he has "friends of the truck," so what you get here is much more than a healthy and affordable lunch. I've been at CY more times than i'm proud to admit. Its my favorite food truck in philly - its healthy, authentically Tunisian, and really delicious food. If you want something filling, get the couscous for $6 (veggie) - $8 (chicken, lamb on fridays). Something light - get one of Ji's (the owner) amazing salads or soups. You get water and a fruit with everything, so definitely worth the price tag. Everything is super good and Ji is the nicest man with a ladle you will ever meet. This is a relatively unknown food cart within the Penn scene, but they have got some great food. I've tried the banh mi, the smoked salmon sandwich (called the Nikki), and the Wistar. All were very good, and the bread is a step above any other food cart bread. They also give you a free banana and small water. I went to Chez Yasmine for the first time yesterday and I liked it a lot. I ordered the swedish smorgas sandwich which is absolutely delicious: Toasted Jewish Rye Bread, Smoked Salmon, Cucumbers, Radishes, Capers, Dill, Caviar and a homemade spread. It's a nice touch that the owner gives you free water and a free banana with it too. Like previous commenters said, the owner likes to have a chat, but he is just really friendly and I didn't feel like I had to wait for my sandwich longer than I would anywhere else. I was here once and I had a really positive experience. I asked the chef what he recommended and he suggested the couscous or the swedish salmon smorgas. I wouldn't usually try salmon from a food truck but the owner was there and recommended the salmon smorgas as well, so I gave it a try. While I waited I talked with the owner and the chef and they were both extremely friendly and they were clearly concerned with making healthy and delicious food and asked me to come back and tell them what I think and tell them how they could improve it. When I got home my sandwich was very delicately prepared and was pretty delicious. I didn't expect to like the blend of cucumbers, radishes, and eggs on the sandwich but it worked and I enjoyed my meal. I would definitely go back and try something new, I think there are a lot of good options on the menu. I've seen a lot of bad reviews on here, and I think some are because this isn't a typical food truck and takes a little more time and cost a bit more money than most food trucks. If that bothers other people then I understand but I think it's definitely worth trying, and is a nice change of pace. read more

Everything I've had here is excellent. The ingredients taste high quality, and each order includes a banana and bottle of water. Portion sizes are appropriate for a healthy human adult, but smaller than at the average food cart - so to maximize calories per dollar, go elsewhere. The proprietor is Tunisian and service is characteristically French - that is, friendly, unhurried, and above all - not subservient. He remembers his regulars and enjoys chatting with everyone, and as a result it's a pleasant place to stand for a few minutes while your order is being prepared. read more

This is the best food-truck food I've had in a very long time. I got the Gretchen, a quinoa salad with vegetables, goat cheese, and nuts on top (nuts are optional). Absolutely delicious, filling but not too heavy. I was given free bread with the salad, and it was shockingly fresh, definitely better than any roll or sandwich bread you could get from another truck. The owner gave me a free clementine and free soup, which was a vegetarian carrot soup. The soup completely blew me away, perfectly spiced and hearty. The soup came with crackers that I think were Swedish, but delicious anyhow. The owner also gave me a free can of nice soda (I don't remember the name, but they're Italian and come in orange and limonata--they cost $3 at Capogiro). This cart is a definite must. I went on Friday and I'm certainly going back Monday. read more
