Went here with high expectations and the wings we got were drowning in sauce and just not great texture. I can't place it but they were on par with the chain style wing places. When we dug into it a bit more, the original owners of the place sold it. It's unfortunate because the sauce itself was good. You can tell that there is/was something there. Now why the 1? I had to go to the bathroom... and they didn't put up a closed sign (should've) or had a plumber fix the issue. What I saw in that bathroom will be forever imprinted in my mind. I won't get super graphic - I'll just say that it made port-o-potties look like a 5-star hotel in comparison. I will never, ever go back here. Not the kind of place (size) for a big party but the food is beyond amazing My girlfriend and I tried the calamari platter w/fries, EXTRA hot and spicy chicken, and the curry chicken. Personally, it's been hard for me to find GOOD calamari + a good sauce other than cocktail here in the 757 area. They brought me out fresh calamari with a sweet dipping sauce, cooked to perfection. The extra spicy wasn't as spicy as I hoped for. Now I have noticed with many Asian owned restaurants they tend to hold back on the spice. But next time (because I definitely will spend my money, in this economy, with them) I'll just have to let them know I'm not afraid of no heat! When I tell you this is my numero uno for Korean fried chicken I am not joking. I've been coming here since 2013 and they have never let me down. Food served fresh, taste was on point, every wing was drenched in sauce. My two favorite sauces would be the soy garlic and hot n' spicy. Service is a little on the slow side because they only have two people working there so please be patient. It is very much so a small mom and pop restaurant, maybe max capacity inside is 50 people. It felt like that would've changed my review from 3 to 4 stars. We asked if we could get the sauce on the side to add on to the chicken and the lady said they can't do that. I don't know why? This is my first time here I got the Beef Bulgogi dinner with a small side of kimchee and rice and Korean style drums and wings with hot and spicy sauce. The food was delicious and they actually give you alot food. Ive had bulgogi at other korean restaurants in 757 and this place gives you alot of beef in comparison, and the wings and drums were cooked well and I loved the hot and spicy sauce. Yelp has got it right! This is a true local gem serving up fantastic Korean style chicken. As their name eludes to they also have fish. However, if you come here for the first time you better be ordering Mr. Hwang's authentic Korean chicken. The location is in East Newport News on highway 17. Exit 64W to J Clyde Blvd East. They are across from the Holiday Inn in a strip with a massage and vape shop, so they got to be good right, HA! Signage is good and slow down to prevent passing and a U-Turn. There is adequate shared parking in the private lot. I found no debris any where out front. My visit was on a Wednesday just after they opened at 11:10 AM. Mr. Hwang was in the back prepping, no one else was around up front. I sat down at a table and it took several minutes, but I was not in a hurry. When he did come out I looked over the menu which was on the counter. I decided to grab a beer from their stand up cooler and ordered 8 Soy Korean wings and the fried Whiting sandwich. All drinks are can/bottle. The prices are very affordable. Around 11:20 a man and woman came in who I found out was Mr. Hwang a daughter and son n' law. They were running late and apologized. The dining room can accommodate 30, or so. However, I hear that more than 90% of the business is take out. Every table was clean and floors tidy. The eating area was dark and dated. Lighting could be improved by opening the blinds. The soy garlic wings hit the table first in around 15 minutes. The plating was nothing overly fancy, no big deal. That first bite and tug of the meat sent my taste buds in a happy place. Crispy with popping scrumptious flavors. I knew this was the real deal and was excited at my find. The fish sandwich came out around 5 minutes later. I had never tried Whiting before, so no offense it was just too bland even with the accompanying lettuce, tomato and onion. It was cooked perfectly, just not for me. I'm a fan! Chic n Fish has been in business 7 years and has a strong following on the peninsula and the southside. I understand why. When it comes to authentic Korean wings there are few places in Tidewater. The new Bonchon in Norfolk is one. I liked my experience here but the Momma forgot my French fries that I ordered and my butt was burning for the next few days when the chicken came out of me. LOL. I found this place on yelp and heard about it from others at my workplace. I was craving good wings and I love Korean fried wings! I ordered the 24 piece wings and got half hot and half Korean garlic. I also ordered kimchee, rice, and fries as it was my meal for lunch and dinner. I put in the phone order as the wings take about 30 minutes to make. I probably screwed the Momma up by ordering my sides once I got there. But she was a super nice lady. She scolded me for asking for blue cheese or ranch. She said these are Korean style wings so no need dipping sauce. She was right! The wings were very flavorful and delicious. I would have liked it a little more crispy but it was still very good. The rice and kimchee was good as was the pickled radish. I am sure my French fries would have been good to if I got it. This place is fairly good. People say it's better than bon chon, but I'm on the fence about that. The wings I received weren't very crisp, even though I saw them come straight from the fryer so freshness wasn't an issue. I prefer the spicy sauce here over bonchon bc this one is more tolerable. It's not overwhelmingly hit that it kills any other flavours. The soy garlic flavour was a little lacking for me and tasted like plain wings. Love the sweet radish though. It accompanies the chicken well. We had called ahead to order since we know it takes long. We were told 30 minutes, and came around the 35 minute mark. I'm almost certain they started frying it when we got there, as we ended up waiting another 10-15 minutes after arrival. I usually come here for lunch, call in at 11, and get there by 12. It still usually takes some time to get the food out as well. I normally get the 2 drums 4 wings combo (soy garlic) with a side of rice. The hot and spicy isn't too spicy, but the extra hot and spicy def. has a kick to it. And trust me when I say, the rice is a perfect complement to the chicken! 2/3 times they will forget to give you any additional sides you order when you're eating in, but I've gotten use to it and just remind them while I'm trying not to inhale everything else. The chicken comes with a little container of coleslaw, which is surprisingly good. Or you can ask for pickled radish. The drums here are huge, bigger than a normal wing place. Chic N Fish is a little different from BonChon in NoVa because it's much more laid back. If you've never been to Chic N Fish before it's easy to miss it. In fact, we drove about a mile past it before we turned around and found it. The interior is very simple and looks like a Chinese take-out place. It's not dirty or anything, but there's nothing here that screams Korean culture. Just four white walls, a few tables and chairs, one flat-screen in the back and a small, yet accommodating kitchen. The food is delicious. This is the only bonchon-like place I know of in Hampton Roads, and the way they prepare it is very close to that of their NoVa counterparts. But the good thing here is that it's not as expensive, which means this food is incredible for the money. Mind you, we only got the wings, so I have to go back for drumsticks. But I can only imagine it's just as good. We went there near the end of the day so no one else was dining in. But my assumption is they make plenty of business from take-out as there were a few people who stopped in to pick up. When we paid we had a great conversation with the owners - a married couple. The husband was cooking while his wife served us. They are both very pleasant and friendly, and for that reason alone I'd come back. I know our options for Korean fried chicken are limited in this area and since this place is some 30+ miles away from me, it's always a treat when I get to indulge in this deliciousness.
