I brought my Macbook to Computerland on a Saturday and Stephan (I probably spelled his wrong) was super nice and and informative about what could be the issue. They called me later that day to let me know my computer was good to pick up. Unfortunately the wifi went out the next day. I called them to let them know that the issue was not fix and they immediately got me in and took another look. They went to work right away and fix the issue at no additional cost. My computer was hacked. Never fell for what I thought, might be a scam. After I realized my lap top was hacked, I went to my table top and changed all passwords for bank, credit card etc. I called Chicago Computer Land. I spoke with Sorin. Sorin was very informative and explained what he had to do, to restore my operating system. I brought my lap top, to Chicago Computer Land. Sorin was extremely educated and explained my options, after listening to Sorin, I finally calmed down. My computer was available the following day for pick up. I called these guys a few weeks before bringing in my computer to get a general quote. The quote was much lower than the other quotes I had received from other repair shops and their review were pretty good. I had dropped my computer on it's corner and it would no longer charge since the AC adapter was hanging off. I brought it in late last week and received a copy of my agreement form via email which informed me that I would hear back from them 24-48 business days with an actual quote. They called me right away and when they couldn't reach me, left a voicemail along with an email requesting I call back. Once I did, the gentleman provided me with 2 different quotes. One to completely fix the adapter and the other to temporarily glue the piece on. I 100% appreciated their honesty when it came to these 2 options, because there was a large price gap between the 2 options. I went with the cheaper option, because I honestly don't know how much longer my computer will last. The gentleman up front stated the glue-job would be a near-permanent fix...I just need to be better with my belongings. Overall, these guys were quick, efficient and definitely understand cost concerns if you have any. If I ever need to recommend a place to friends or family, these are the guys and I will definitely bring my business back to them, but hopefully not anytime soon :) read more

Wow, don't I feel like an asshole for writing the first non-five star review? This is really a 3.5 star review, and probably would have easily been a 4 star review if Aldi's repairs worked. But, they didn't. So, here we are. When my computer started acting crazy, I panicked. My laptop is only two years old, so the idea of throwing down money to buy a new one was not something I was jazzed about. (Side note: Mercury was in retrograde when my computer went bananas. Coincidence?) So I hopped over to Yelp to look for a computer repair place, and happened to see Chicago ComputerLand. Since it's not far from my house, on a sunny Saturday morning I backed up my files one last time, wrapped up Big Blue (my laptop), and walked over here. I tried to be a good customer and I had written down all the crazy things it was doing and all the error messages I was receiving. Aldi said he would call me later that day or the next day to let me know what was going on. Saturday late afternoon he called me and asked for my windows password, so I at least knew he was looking at it. I anxiously awaited to hear back from him, but did not. Sunday the hours ticked by and I called to get an update, but there wasn't one - he was still running tests. I should add here that one of the reasons I picked this place was because all of the other reviews mentioned he was able to repair their computers the same day/night. So I admit that my expectations going in were probably way too high, and well, we all know what happens then - disappointment. Anyhoo, on Monday he called me and gave me the run down of what was wrong and an estimate. I told him to go ahead with the repairs, and he said it would be ready that afternoon. ***Note - spring for the extra $20 for him to back up your files. I almost didn't, knowing I had backed them up myself, but guess what? One of the problems was that my hard drive was corrupted (like owner, like laptop?). So all those files I backed up were useless. Can we talk about the relief I felt when I saw everything was still there? So, where was I? (God this is a long review.) Oh yeah - Monday afternoon. I left work, and was literally stepping on the train when my phone rings. It's Aldi letting me know my computer wasn't ready yet. While I appreciated the phone call, I was super bummed it was taking way longer than I had expected it to. I went in Tuesday after work and it was finally ready. He had to do a bunch of things that kind of lost me because I don't speak computer, but all I cared about was that my files were still there. Because seriously, if I had lost some of the pictures on my hard drive someone would have had to commit me. And I don't think Aldi and I are that close. So it was fixed, and my wallet was only $110 lighter. I got home and had to reinstall some programs, but otherwise it was working perfectly and I was happy. I probably should have written this review then - there would have been more stars, but hey, I'm a busy gal. But a week later, it started running the disk check again when it started up. This was the beginning of the end the last time. It's been about three weeks and - knock on wood - it seems to be running okay, but I do wish that damn disk check would stop. Overall, would I recommend this place? Sure, why not. Aldi seemed nice enough, and it seems like my computer taking so long to be repaired was a fluke if you look at the other reviews. But since his repair didn't completely fix the entire problem, I can't really give this review more than three stars. I'll keep this short and sweet. For the many years I have lived off Wrightwood and Orchard I have seen this shop and always wondered about its services. When my phone screen broke I searched for local shops with the best ratings. ComputerLand was amongst the best in ratings. Stay away from these guys. I brought my PC in 3 weeks ago, still not fixed. And they would never call me to tell me what was happening, I've had to always call them. Of course, the guy with the information is never in when I call, and the people who are in are extremely rude. No one could or would give me a straight, direct, honest answer to what was going on. GET ESTIMATE IN WRITING!! They originally told me 260 total for parts and labor. Now, after 3 weeks, they are saying the part is 299 plus another 80 for labor and denying they ever estimated 260 total. I had a great experience with Chicago Computerland. My iphone 6S Plus was kinda lagging so I ordered a battery from them and when it came in, I had it installed. Sorin was great. Not only did he change the battery quickly (I couldn't bear the thought of going through Apple) he also explained that it might not really help, because he explained to me a little bit about the architecture of my older model. That Apple chose battery strength over CPU? so the problem I was having might not be the battery.(sic) anyway, my phone works perfectly now and who knows maybe it wasnt the battery. Maybe it was just that I found a competent and knowledgeable tech guy and it was the placebo effect! but the process was affordable and easy to set up, for such a small transaction to be handled so efficiently was quite a pleasure. I wish I had nerdier friends, friends who fix computers-- and now I kind of do: I have Aldi! For months, I had ignored the messages that McAfee kept sending me; I had ignored the fact that I had no memory left on my computer; I had ignored it all, hoping it would just fix itself on its own. Sadly, my computer did not fix itself and I had to figure out how to get more memory otherwise I wouldn't be able to install my new McAfee software, and clearly that is just asking for trouble. I called Aldi on Friday, brought my computer to his house on Saturday (although he does do house calls) and for a very reasonable flat fee, by the afternoon all my problems were fixed! My laptop sucks. I got a good deal on it and I should have known karma would come bite me in the ass. After going to some craphole place in the West Loop that must have just opened (they stole my $50 and didn't fix my computer), I found ComputerLand and decided to give them a shot based on their good reviews. Dropped it off on Thursday, got a call on Friday with a description of the problem and my options with prices. Not the cheapest fix but I should have known with my luck that it wouldn't be cheap. It basically needed a whole new hard drive with labor was just under $200. They called midday on Saturday and it was ready and has been running perfectly ever since. They saved all the docs on my desktop for me and knock on wood, I'll be good for awhile. My work machine (Asus Rog) would not boot up. Called ComputerLand after finding them on the web. Aldi picked up his cell phone promptly. Based on my description of the problem, he provided some prognoses with the caveat that he would have to run diagnostics before confirming. I ran the machine down to his shop. I told him it was my work machine and he promised to work on it as quickly as he could (at no extra charge). The form was simple to fill. A few hours later he called to confirm the problem and to inquire if he had permission to go ahead and fix it. He did it for the price he had quoted earlier. When I went, the machine was ready. I was also given thorough and clear instructions on how to handle the power to my laptop. (For those interested, turn off your machine and let the battery drain when using it.) This all sounds so normal. But how rare is it nowadays?! Clear communication, fast service and a human touch. I will certainly go back to them for my future computer repairs. read more

I have a really nice HP, All-In-One, 34" ENVY A-150 Curved Screen PC that was factory delivered with an extremely small C: drive and a 1 TB D: drive. The C: drive eventually filled up/corrupted space and I could no longer accept OS updates. So, after a few months of irritation, I called Chicago ComputerLand to see if they could help me out... YES! Even though it cost me about 25% of the original cost of the PC which I've had for some time, it was well worth it! They installed a 1TB SSD C: Drive with the latest version of Windows. Booting is now a blink of an eye! Their estimate on the cost and time to perform the work was spot on. I removed all my files before I brought it to them. My computer was not fully loading Windows (I have Vista, so I actually shouldn't be sad) so I looked around online for reviews for highly recommend computer repair places. This place had great reviews on Yelp, so I thought it would be a safe bet - I was right! Really, a 4.5 star review - you'll see why at the bottom. I dropped it off on Thursday morning and described my problem and they told me that they would call me in a couple hours with what they found. A couple hours later they called me and told me my hard drive had bad spots. They didn't say "bad spots"- that's me and my layman's interpretation of the issue. They made sure to detail what they were going to do and how much it would cost. They have to get a verbal "ok" before they will do anything to you computer, which I appreciated. While they were repairing the hard drive, I bought WIndows 7 to upgrade my computer. I provided them with the key and they updated my operating system. I was able to pick up the computer the next day and it's working PERFECTLY now. The ONLY reason I would say they didn't get 5 stars was because they were a little slow responding to me. I had to follow up on Friday morning to see the status of my computer (9:30 AM) and they said it would be 3 hours. About 6 hours later they called me and told me it would be ready at 6 PM. I was really happy with the service here and am thankfully typing this review on my PC which had been out of commission for some time! The problem was a difficult one and I was impressed with their ability to figure it out. I brought it in because my computer was constantly restarting itself and giving me this blue screen that flashed so much text I could never even read all of it to get an idea of what the issue was. I couldn't play games or run Word! It was horrible. But I brought it in feeling a bit skeptical since the man on the phone seemed pretty gruff, but after a few days they said they'd fixed it. When the same problem kept happening I brought it back where they gladly worked on it for no charge. In the end, despite my PC constantly passing memory tests, the issue really was a couple of bad sticks of memory. That was over a month or two ago and this computer is still running like a dream. I even had a different problem crop up which they also fixed for no charge. If anyone I know needs their computer fixed, this is the place I'll recommend them to! I have no idea why these guys have so many good reviews. It was the only reason I even went to them. I also really am not a fan of leaving reviews but I'm just so thoroughly disappointed that I can't not say anything. I took a water damaged computer to them that wouldn't turn on at all & they made it work... except I realized the sound wasn't working at all when I got home. I gave them the benefit of the doubt so I took it back & they replaced the headphone jack (???) & gave it back to me but.... nothing changed at all. Still no sound. And they still charged me for it even though we both could see that nothing changed at all. I wish I had refused to pay at the time cause it seems unfair to pay for something that did absolutely nothing. I ended up going somewhere else & when they opened it, there was STILL water damage & there were parts & screws MISSING. I ended up having to pay again for someone to redo everything that they did & now it works perfectly. All together, at both places, I wasted around $800 on this computer when I could've paid less than half that to begin with. I could've just put in some extra money & bought a whole new computer if I knew I was gonna spend that much. I also avoided going to Apple cause they wanted to charge me $750 but looking back, I might as well have done it since I ended up paying more than that anyway. They also put a dent in one of my keys. Stephan did a great job fixing my computer. I called Friday afternoon, Stphan answered my questions politely. I arrived at his store on Saturday 9 am. I had accidentally flipped the number 4 & letter e key pads off my laptop & tried to fix it by supergluing it. Bad idea. I told Stephan my problem & he fixed it within minutes. My boyfriend had ordered replacement key pads for me online which made the it much easier, I made a stupid mistake gluing the keypads back on, but Stephan never made me feel stupid when I explained my problem, which I really appreciate. He fixed my laptop in about 15 minutes. What really stood out to me during my interaction with Stephan was his willingness to help people. While Stephan was fixing my laptop, a man came in, asked Stephan if he could use his computer to print out a paper & if Stephan could teach him how to scan or fax the sheet. Stephan told him, "Sure, go ahead & log onto my computer." The other man in the store told me that his friend recommended Stephan to him & that Stephan always helps him & his friend out. I returned from a recent business trip late on a Saturday evening to find my laptop wouldn't power on whatsoever once I made it home. Fearing the worst, I looked for whoever I could find that would be open the next day (Sunday) to diagnose and repair this pending disaster ASAP. I found these guys on Yelp and saw that they were in my neighborhood and actually open the following day so I decided to go to them first. I couldn't have made a better decision. When I dropped by shortly after they opened up, they explained their diagnostic processing and rates, which were more than reasonable. They reassured me that they felt like it was a simple power source issue but let me know they'd open it up, test it, and (hopefully) repair it no later than the following day. I couldn't have been more relieved when they called me less than 24 hours later to let me know they fixed my power problem and my laptop was fine! I was thrilled to swing by later that day and pick it up, and I'd like to note that their repair fees were EXTREMELY fair and reasonable. If you are having issues with your computer I can't recommend Chicago Computerland enough. Professional, courteous, and highly efficient. Reasonably priced and open on Sundays. These guys are awesome. Very helpful and reasonably priced. They will spend time with you discussing your problems. We've had our laptops repaired here on several occasions. They've always turned them around quickly and for a reasonable fee. Most recently my laptop was randomly shutting down. They found and removed some viruses for $90, which did improve the system performance but the problem persists. It's a very intermittent problem so difficult to identify the cause. I brought it back in and they tested it for around 24 hours. I spent a ton of time with them on the phone and in person discussing the problem. We never figured out what the problem is but they told me how to monitor the situation and even made a recommendation for a new laptop. There was no charge for any of this. read more

This is long overdue. I have been going to Computerland for about a decade. The guys here have been helpful beyond words. They are experts and super skilled at what they do--but all of them are also just down-to-earth nice people, which makes a big difference. They've always listened and cared about what I've needed. Their repair jobs have always been excellent. They're great with communicating about issues, not annoyed by my questions, patient with their explanations, and honest--which I appreciate. I'll never forget them telling me over the years: "We *can* fix your laptop's touchscreen [note: it had 3 separate issues], but the cost would be more than the price of a new laptop--so, we wouldn't recommend it. A third, less-expensive option would be using a separate external monitor when at home." and "We can fix your mousepad. If wait time for the repair or money are an ussue, you could also buy yourself a USB mouse somewhere." You don't have to worry about being ripped off or taken advantage of. Highly recommended. In recent years, Aldi and Soren are the two with whom I've interacted the most. I *hope* I never need to see them again/need any repairs ever again...but stuff happens...and I'm glad they're here when it does. *My last visit alone: this past spring, after noticing that screws on the base of my laptop had started disappearing this past spring and being frustrated, I had planned to buy some screws myself and replace them. Was in their neighborhood at Guitar Center across the street and visited them to just to vent, angry that the screws can just come out. Talked to Aldi about it. He started looking through his screws for the sizes I needed (before this, I didn't know that there are different sizes for the tiny screws) and he replaced them for me, free of charge. Good dude. It's never great when you have to get your computer fixed, but I would recommend these guys if you run into troubles. I had to hit them up twice last semester because my laptop was freaking out on me. It initially had a virus that they removed for me. It was $90 but they told me up front that this was their flat fee, so I wasn't surprised by anything later. Sadly I had more issues with it a week after I picked it back up from them. The fan started crapping out on me so I took it back and asked them if they could do anything. Unfortunately, I had to get it replaced but once again they told me up front what the charges would probably be. It cost me another $120 (60 for the new fan, 60 for the maintenance) but it's been working fine ever since. I was a little frustrated because I had to be without my laptop for 5-6 days while the fan was getting replaced. I was initially told it would be 3-4 but I got a call later with the update. Definitely wasn't ideal since I was still in school, but what can you do? They fixed everything for me and I would trust them again with it if I needed to. read more

My computer shut down all of a sudden and wouldn't start up while I was working on a paper which was due the next day. I yelped this area, found the this place and run into it. I told them I need to find my paper from hard disk ASAP, and those gentlemen there are really professional, they told me where the hard disk is right after they know the model no.. I chose the rush service but I thought it would still take at lease two to three days. Aldi, the stuff there said they gonna try their best. I dropped it off at 2 pm, and they called me at 5 pm, explained all the details about my computer's problems, gave me an really reasonable price and told me that I can pick it up at 6:30 pm! Computers have given us enormous power to communicate, to gather and distribute information, to buy and sell everything from cars and houses to clothes or books or or get us hooked up in minutes eg Tindr. But they also render us powerless when things go wrong. And for some of this, its not a matter of facebook, twitter or celeb gossip but essential for work. I am a professor and my work (globalization), writing, researching, often needing latest info on ME conflict, Chinese steel production, or Brazilian politics would not be possible w/o my computer. But alas and alack, as anyone reading this knows, spyware, malware, viruses, adware can sneak in even with a good anti virus program. My buddy Carl took care of me for many years, but then moved. Now what. I had another problem. Ok to make a long story short, one of the closest places to me was Computerland. The few (at that time) reviews said they were good, I did not have time to check everyplace in 6 mile radius so I went with them. Wow am I glad I did. Aldi and Stepan are great, good service, very reasonable priced, and at times of being in hurry, very expedited service. And while in earlier times I could troubleshoot and do some repairs, today the computers and software are much to sophisticated and unscrupulous folks can tell you you need a new hard drive, motherboard, charge you $800 buck, and all that was needed was removing a virus. And perhaps they did not ever replace the parts. You cannot find better folks, more competent, or more honest. So everything I said in my earlier review 2 years ago is still true. I just want to say that I have never received better customer service in any technical capacity. They were quick, professional and thorough. I had an old ASUS notebook that kept blacking out on me and I didn't know what the problem was. I dropped it off to ComputerLand, and they listened to my tale of woe and wrote everything down and told me they would call me in forty-eight hours with a diagnosis and a quote. And they did call me, as promised, on the dot. They said it was the monitor and they quoted me a very reasonable price. They told me the work would take about four business days. Then, they called me four days later and said that they received and installed the monitor, and at first everything seemed OK, but then the computer went on the fritz again. So, they did more diagnostic testing, and discovered it was the motherboard. They said they would not charge me for the new monitor. They then offered to replace the motherboard, or they could give me a refurbished computer for half the price and just transfer all my data. I chose the latter option and lo and behold! The refurbished computer is MUCH faster and better than my old notebook. I am really very happy and grateful to them. They took extra time and care to fully understand the problem and they also gave me options. Also, whenever I call them, Alex himself answers the phone. That means a lot to me- a personal touch. A little bit of internet research allowed me to diagnose the probable cause of the problem: my backlight was out. Hmmmm, I thought, how to replace that? I could order the parts for around $50, wait a week, and then install it myself and hope that I didn't screw things up even worse. When my MSI laptop fan broke, I looked up computer repair shops on yelp and chose this place after reading all of the reviews. I wasn't disappointed! They were great about keeping me updated on the repair timeline and it works like new again, no problem. I then decided why not bring in an old laptop that had been sitting under my bed since it died during undergrad, while I'm on this repair kick. Even though the data extraction turned out to be more pricey than I'd hope, they let me view all of the files they were able to retrieve and let ME decide if it was worth paying for. All I can say is, I don't think geek squad would offer the same kind of deal. It took me a while to decide on whether or not I wanted to pay for the data but they were super nice and flexible about holding my files until I made my final decision and had time to stop by. Which is great, I prefer businesses that are quick and to the point. My laptop had a broken LCD screen, I asked for a quote and one was given immediately. A full screen replacement within 24 hours ran me $150 dollars; great deal in my opinion considering the quick labor and the LCD itself cost around $100. I left the shop, and within 24 hours I received a call saying i could pick the laptop up whenever. Upon inspection of my laptop, I realized the LCD that was replaced was a much nicer LCD than my original laptop LCD. This was a huge plus. We had a laptop mishap resulting in a cracked screen. Called CCL, took it down to them, and Aldi had it replaced at a very fair price in less than a day. (Four hours, to be precise.) He also ran a diagnostic and told me about other issues with my machine. What I liked about that? He didn't try to upsell me on anything. He just said--"This might be a problem for you down the road" and gave me a bunch of free solutions to prevent the worst case scenario. I'm not sure how you do any better than that!
