By the 1860s, Chicago's water supply was inadequate for its growing population. Near-shore lake water was too polluted to be used because of runoff from the Chicago River. In 1867, Chesbrough, an engineer designed a water supply tunnel system running nearly 2 miles offshore pumped back to shore through this pumping station. Boyington designed both the pumping works building & Water Tower that houses the standpipe. Both buildings were built in the Gothic Revival style with distinctive yellow Joliet limestone. The buildings look like something out of a fairy tale. The Chicago Water Tower was the most iconic structure that remained standing after the Great Fire of 1871. It was a rallying point for the city. It stood as a symbol for a city determined to rise from its own ashes. Sadly at 9 o'clock on a Friday morning homeless filled most of the benches panhandling with all of their belongings.

In fact, it has witnessed its share of disasters over the years. As the myth has it- the Water Tower wasn't the only structure left standing after the city was ravaged by the Great Fire of 1871 - it is one of Six Structures That Survived the Great Chicago Fire--built-in 1869. As of today, it still stands as the second oldest water tower in America. The tower contained a pipe that stood roughly around 140 feet high. The intent was to pump water from Lake Michigan so it could be used for multiple purposes. One such use was for the Chicago Fire Department. It intended to pump clean water via the water cribs from the lake. despite the intent to provide the fire department with enough water to put out a fire, it wasn't enough to contain the Great Fire of Chicago in 1871. However, there had been stories of the spirits that have haunted the water tower for many years, but that's the case with every old building, isn't it?

LOADED WEDGE SALAD w/BACON, TOMATO & BLUE CHEESE: -- appropriate amount of tasty creamy dressing -- very large but great for 3 people needing some greens with their beef -- I stirred it up well and very tasty -- good or better balance of ingredients RATING = A 22 OUNCE CHICAGO CUT: -- ribeye type cut -- medium-rare -- pre-cut per our request (I prefer not as steak stays hotter when served) -- nice edge bark -- nicely cooked -- best beef of the night -- the rib bone piece was legit but did adhere to the bone a lot RATING = A FILET MIGNON (14 ounce): -- cooked rare plus -- definitely rare -- pre-cut again -- cuts easily but maybe not like butter -- very good steak but I still feel like a recent Mastro's petit filet cooked rare + was better) -- served with Bernaise sauce RATING = A- JUMBO LUMP CRAB CAKE w/thousand island sauce?: -- big fat delish cake -- lightly breaded -- tender and fresh RATING = A+ CARROT CAKE: The MOOSE is loose!!! -- this slice of cake is the size of our head -- it appears to be a 1/4 cut of a gigantic carrot cake -- there are three cake layers w/thick layer of cream cheese on top of each layer -- it could be better with black walnut throughout the cake -- there are walnuts pressed into the backside of it which is nice -- the golden raisins are not ideal but forgivable compared with regular raisins ("squishy" is not needed in carrot cake) -- very moist even days later stored in their plastic to-go container RATING = A The dining room is super active with staff and very noisy so it may not be the ideal choice for a romantic dinner or true catchup with friends you have not seen in a long time. But there is no denying the STAFF are fun and excellent as is the chowder.

For whatever reason, we've been stuck in our North Side routine -- and, hey, there are a lot of nice places around Lakeview, so not a bad routine -- but we got out to one of the classics downtown to shake things up. And, holy cow, we're glad we did. Every moment in Gibsons, from the host to the service to the food, was a joy. Our server, Avery, was excellent. He knew the menu. He made us feel comfortable and, above all else, welcome. He was funny. He saw we were getting tipsy and rolled with it. MY WIFE and I took our time a little bit, enjoyed the wine, perused the menu. We each picked the perfect entrees. MY WIFE is pretty small and short but she loved the skirt steak so much she ate the whole thing. I've never seen her do that before. And we still had a ton to take home. Just a great night for us. Thanks to everyone at Gibsons who helped make it so. We're definitely coming back, and we're not waiting five years to do so. The patio they have there is calling my name.

The southern end, at Michigan and the Chicago River, is the earliest epicenter of Chicago; home to Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable, the founder of Chicago, as well as Fort Dearborn. Along the mag mile you'll find upscale restaurants, luxury shopping, fancy hotels, and more. There are multiple malls along the strip; The Shoppes at Northbridge are on the south end, and both the 900 Shops and Water Tower Place flank the north end Michigan Avenue. Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, as well as Burberry's flagship store in the United States and the largest Ralph Lauren in the world. There's also a cafe in that store called Ralph's, and I don't know if it's all for the 'gram or they put something in their coffee but it often has a line out the door. Starbucks Roastery, the largest of their stores worldwide, is on the corner of Erie and Michigan. If you are interested in an afternoon tea, you'll want to see if the Drake is hosting. This hotel has the distinction of hosting many heads of state and other dignitaries, including Princess Diana when she visited in 1996. Some of the cultural landmarks of the city are found here as well. Tribute Tower and Wrigley Building are right at the southernmost end of the Mile. 875 Michigan Avenue, more commonly known as the Hancock Building before that company relinquished the naming rights, boasts one of the city's observation decks (I think it's the better of the two). The Chicago Water Tower and Pumping Station, two of the most prominent and among the few buildings that survived the Chicago Fire, are at Pearson and Michigan on opposite sides of the street and the pumping station is a cool place to check out. You can even visit one of the city's ensemble theaters here, as Lookingglass Theatre is located in the lower levels of the pumping station. You might be surprised to find that there's even a playground right off this famous stretch of road; Seneca Playground is steps from Michigan Avenue if you have kids that need to burn off some energy. There's plenty to do that doesn't include spending money, too. You can catch water taxis near the Wrigley Building to visit other areas along the river (well, I guess that does cost a bit of cash). And there are sometimes events along the street, such as the Lights Parade that happens each Thanksgiving weekend or the art installations that are often found in the green planters along the street. If you're visiting, it's certainly worth a visit as you check out Millennium Park or take an architectural boat tour.

For the past decade our building has had to make significant changes due to Life-Safety requirements mandated by the City of Chicago. This has been an extremely costly endeavor for our smaller high-rise building. During this time our condo has had three different management companies - each new one has cost us significant time and money. We've also earned a reputation for being difficult due to select board members/residents who allow their personal agenda(s) and opinions to interfere with the building's well-being as a whole. This resulted in two of the management companies quitting and leaving us in a lurch. Not good. Of the three new companies that we interviewed, TBG was the only one willing to work within our budget and undertake our building's requirements. This means working diligently with Directors, finding creative solutions regarding issues within a 100 year old building, and attending our monthly board meetings (legally they are not required to do this). It takes time for management companies to get to know their buildings. No management company is going to be a 100% perfect fit. Yes, TBG has dropped the ball on some of our smaller issues, but they've been here for the big ones and kept us from bankruptcy. They are here to help us make informed decisions that work within the parameters of our building's need. Thank you Larry & TBG.

I reported the lack of communication and response via voicemail to her supervisor N. Smiley however I never received an email nor callback from N. Smiley. Since getting the condo board involved, clear timely communication from T. Roper has been very poor.
