Fantastic experience at this OG Chicago steakhouse. I'm glad that I chose this to be my first steak experience in Chicago. There's a reason it's so frequently recommended. We did the Chicago cut, ribeye, medium, rare, and the pork chops medium with a wedge salad on the side. The meal could not have been better and the restaurant and service around point wonderful experience. I already plan on returning to Gibson's, but this time trying the one in Rosemont. One criticism was the Keylime pie. It was super tall, but the cream on top wasn't particularly good. Overly sweet and not adding anything. The Keylime portion on the bottom didn't have much tanginess to it. A real missed opportunity, especially at the price. read more

My wife and I had one of the best dining experiences we've ever had here last night. (Living in Chicago for 30 years, I like to think that's saying something.) For whatever reason, we've been stuck in our North Side routine -- and, hey, there are a lot of nice places around Lakeview, so not a bad routine -- but we got out to one of the classics downtown to shake things up. And, holy cow, we're glad we did. Every moment in Gibsons, from the host to the service to the food, was a joy. Our server, Avery, was excellent. He knew the menu. He made us feel comfortable and, above all else, welcome. He was funny. He saw we were getting tipsy and rolled with it. MY WIFE and I took our time a little bit, enjoyed the wine, perused the menu. We each picked the perfect entrees. MY WIFE is pretty small and short but she loved the skirt steak so much she ate the whole thing. I've never seen her do that before. Went for lunch, first time in Chicago. We sat outside. Vibes are nice. Wind picked up and water and leaves fell on my hubs leaving him wet and leaves went in our drink and waters. Hostess promptly moved our seats. I had the tuna melt ( a little too greasy for me) hubs had the burger. I did see someone get the turtle for dessert and it looked great. I thought it was fine. We came here for my birthday dinner and I can without say this is the best steakhouse in the city. Not sure what it is, but so far the best steaks I've had are from places that offer more of an "old school" Chicago classic vibe. The more modern and "upscale" steakhouses haven't really been serving good steaks. The service here as phenomenal. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and was able to get seated immediately. Our server was great, very professional and made sure our night went smoothly. They started us off with bread & butter and I also got myself a glass of wine. We also ordered their soup of the day which was Lobster Bisque. My wife ordered their Filet Mignon. And I ordered their WRs Chicago Cut. I ordered my steak medium rare and it was perfectly cooked. The steak was very tender and juicy, not too fatty and just the right amount of seasoning. My wife's filet was just as delicious. We also ordered a side of mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts that came with maple bourbon butter and bacon. I will adjust two sides was a bit much for the both of us. Overall we left extremely satisfied and full. I can definitely see myself returning in the near future. My husband and I went to lunch here today for Chicago Restaurant Week. What a great meal and deal! The menu includes bread for the table, a choice of salad or soup, steak frites, and crème brûlée. So much food! The barley and beef soup I had was fantastic. And the steak was so well prepared, I was very pleased (I ordered it medium). We have never been to Gibsons before, but I understand it's just one of these Chicago spots you have to go to at least once. We had a great time. The ambiance is very Chicago, the staff was very nice, and we didn't have trouble finding street parking. This review focuses on the private dining room and amazing service that led to an incredible night full of memories. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Gibson's main dining area is busy, bustling, and full of people downstairs. Upstairs, our group dined in the private dining room. It was large, spacious, with a wine cellar in the back. The ceiling was lined with dark wood beams and a private bar sat outside our room. Best of all, the noise level was much lower so we could enjoy each other's conversations. 1 Star. Service - Our primary coordinator was Mary Kate. She made sure everything was in order, including timing of our meal. We also had a bartender in the room who could make us drinks, and if they couldn't, they would custom order it from the bar. An army of servers dressed in sharp, white jackets would ensure each of us had an amazing experience. 1 Star. Food - Once our party arrived, our food immediately came out (the menu had already been selected). First up, the seafood tower had a plate of huge, plump shrimp, crab salad, and oysters. We also had fried calamari. But let's get real, the reason Gibson has "Steakhouse" in the name is because the steaks are amazing. I had the Chicago cut (bone in ribeye), and the prime steak was so tender and perfectly grilled medium rare. The seasoning was simple, so the beef flavor could shine. My steak was so tender and flavorful - one of the best steaks I've ever had at a restaurant. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. Now, I realize this was a private dining experience. I want to return to dine in the main dining room. I'm sure the food and service will still be outstanding. I hadn't been to Gibsons in quite a few years, but I always remembered it as one of the best steakhouses I'd ever eaten at. Going to Chicago with my wife for a long weekend, Gibsons was a must go to! The restaurant didn't disappoint, it was just as good as I remembered. The service here is first class. I loved it when our server came over showing all the cuts of beef, along with detailing how it's cooked at 1800 degrees. We each ordered filets medium rare. The steaks were delicious, served with Bearnaise sauce. The side of creamed spinach was perfect with the meal. When I made the reservation on Open Table I noted it was our Anniversary dinner. A real touch of class by this restaurant was serving us an ice cream parfait with a candle after dinner. Not something they had to do, but very nice! I would have given this establishment zero stars if it hadn't been for our server, Nicole. Her service and kindness during our meal was unmatched. Now for the reason for this poor review. A month ago I made reservations for my birthday dinner (the restaurant also knew this because OpenTable asks if the visit is a special occasion). We are in town from Arizona and I love a nice steak birthday dinner. When checking in for our reservation I noticed we were not met with the kindest of welcomes. I may also add we still had to wait despite having a reservation, but we did not complain as that stuff happens sometimes. The four of us ended up being sat at a table a few feet from the kitchen and around most of the foot traffic from the restaurant, no question the most undesired table imaginable. It was still early after we were sat so without saying anything to my family I walked over to the hostess stand and asked the original woman who sat us at our table if there was any chance we could move to a booth (I noticed a party was about to leave since their food was packed up). She said it may be a little longer of a wait, but she was going to ask the main hostess. Mind you, I asked kindly, not demanding, and apologized profusely for not saying something sooner. If she were to tell me my request wouldn't be possible for whatever reason, I would've been fine with that since I could see it was a busy night. The hostess I spoke to then went to the taller blonde hostess with the iPad and made her aware of my request. I stood there to wait for an answer so I could take it back to my family and let them know the plan. The next thing I know the taller blonde hostess turns around and - loudly - says, "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!?" And at that moment I was so shocked, I just told them both "nevermind" and quickly walked back to the table. My family could tell something was wrong but I did not (and could not to be honest) find the words to tell them what happened, as I know they would be upset. I also did not want to make a scene, after all it was my birthday. We have been out in the Chicago area since Thursday and have met some of the nicest people, especially in the hospitality industry. All of that came to an abrupt end when encountering this staff member at Gibson's. Of course the manager came over to try and do damage control by them willing to have us move tables to "appease the birthday girl", but at point the move would not have made that interaction "right" in my opinion. I objected to move tables out of protest of this behavior. The manager never apologized on behalf of this staff member's behavior or even acknowledged what was said. To be fair I'm not sure if he was aware what was said, but I never heard an apology from the hostess herself or any direct acknowledgment of this interaction. Any acknowledgment of this abrupt behavior would have been nice and I would have added more stars to this review. This same manager told us he would be to check on us later on during our meal, but we did not see him the rest of the evening (no surprise to me to be honest). I do take responsibility in not speaking up sooner to make my seating preferences known, but this interaction from a small request sealed the deal in my thoughts of this restaurant. We won't be back, as I'm sure there are plenty of higher end steak houses in the area that employ professional front of house staff. Staff who can adequately handle a busy evening without making their customers feel like they did something wrong. And on their birthday. read more

It seems that Gibsons will always be a classic solid steakhouse. I came here for my bday and enjoyed the food plus atmosphere. I had a 12 oz prime rib, sautéed spinach, and a plain baked potato. The Prime rib was flavorful and seasoned well. The highlight was having an oz of Louis XIII cognac. They rolled it out on a silver cart and gave a whole presentation which seemed like it lasted 5 minutes before pouring it up. The fragrance was heavy, yet this was the smoothest drink I have ever had. Also tasted just delightful in every way. I hate I didn't get any photos, but I'm sure there will be a next time. read more

We've been going here for years. Last night the service was so rushed and I just didn't like that. The bread was stale and cold and the steaks were incredibly dry and one was underdone. Requested no onions in the salad but it came with a million raw onions. The dessert of key lime pie was ok but overly sweet with not a lot of flavor. Food and drinks were all excellent - their sides are for sharing and come in absolutely mind-boggling portions. Steaks are incredible as you may imagine. Our server walked us through the steak offerings and their specialties and was more than happy to recommend some based on our preferences. Solid 4 Stars for the favorite spot in Chicago downtown area's most famous tourist centric restaurant situated just three blocks from the Magnificent Mile! The restaurant is surrounded by several other famous restaurants all owned by the same owner and his descendants! The original store opened its doors before the Second World War and has been in existence since. The entire entrance upstairs to the bathrooms are adorned with signed photographs of old and new celebrities! They have fantastic service and fast response to any requests. My best friend and I visited this restaurant when we visited Chicago in 2018. Now that I am a resident of Chicago, I once frequented this place. Steaks were amazing. Service was great. Back in 2023, my boyfriend and I would go here a lot, and I noticed that servers would treat us differently if we didn't dress up as nicely. There was an instance where they really undercooked his filet and we had to take it back. When we got it back, it was well done. The waiter also got defensive when we asked him to take the undercooked filet when it was literally raw. I didn't go back there for a while until recently. I took my team of mechanics to dinner and the server was amazing. I was afraid that they would just my team since they are blue collar working men when I made the reservation, but they were all so patient with us. My team also enjoyed the steaks and said it was worth going through the traffic for it.
