I so wanted to like this place more! The positive: the location is awesome in the heart of shopping and it has amazing history that's fun the look at. They also had a wonderful person working in the men's bathroom and he was a gem. Our daughter spilled a bit on her shirt and one of the servers had a Tide pen. The negative: for a restaurant where you going to spend over $100 a person, we had to ask twice for water refills, in fact one time we asked the manager and he had to track down our servers. The seating is just ok, it's pretty loud as your on top of each other really. The steak was above average but not great. They seems to char the outside see pictures and it was fairly bland, got the filet. Salad was drowned with dressing and had virtually nothing other than 2 average cheap grape tomatoes. The sides were just ok. I wanted to be blown away as Chicago is "known" for their steaks, the waiter even said they had their own rating. Meh... After eating twice in Vegas this month and getting wagyu I guess I'm spoiled. Go once to get the experience.
Fantastic experience at this OG Chicago steakhouse. I'm glad that I chose this to be my first steak experience in Chicago. There's a reason it's so frequently recommended. We did the Chicago cut, ribeye, medium, rare, and the pork chops medium with a wedge salad on the side. The meal could not have been better and the restaurant and service around point wonderful experience. I already plan on returning to Gibson's, but this time trying the one in Rosemont. One criticism was the Keylime pie. It was super tall, but the cream on top wasn't particularly good. Overly sweet and not adding anything. The Keylime portion on the bottom didn't have much tanginess to it. A real missed opportunity, especially at the price.
Short Review: A staple in Chicago in the middle of the Viagra Triangle neighborhood. Friendly staff and patrons. Easy to make friends at the bar. Food is outstanding. Long Review: Met a friend for dinner while in Chicago and he said Gibson's was a must. We went on a Thursday night and the place was absolutely packed. Barely any walking room when you entered the bar / check-in area. We ordered drinks in the bar while waiting for our table and it was a scene - a good one. Very vibrant and really friendly people all around. Piano bar vibes with the live playing at your request. Bartenders are attentive and try to get to everyone quickly. Just to give you a sense of how friendly this place is, I accidentally knocked over my glass of wine while reaching for the bill. Caught it though...phew. But not before I spilled it all over the back of the woman sitting next to me, the man to the right of me, and of course all over myself! Within two seconds, a waitress came over with napkins to help clean up the mess, the guy sitting next to me got on the floor and wiped it all up, and the woman whom I spilled the drink all over was like "Don't even worry about! At least you caught the wine glass!" Wow! I was stunned at how cool everyone was, and it set the tone for the evening. We finally got our table and split the Gipson's ribeye, lobster, sweet potato and brussel sprouts. Seriously one of the best steakhouse meals I've ever had. The waitress was so friendly and very knowledgeable about the food. She was perfect. Folks, I highly recommend this place. Tell 'em the girl who caught the glass sent you!
A turkey club sandwich has no business being this good. Hands down, THE best turkey club sandwich I have ever had, it's not even close. Everything about it was fresh, the bread was thin but sturdy and present in taste, not one ingredient in the sandwich overpowered another, and the cole slaw as a side (recommended by my server) complimented it beautifully. I'm not sure if this is on their dinner menu, as I visited about 30 minutes before lunch was over. The bar area was starting to get busy, but I was impressed with how fast I was initially approached by the server, who was so friendly and came with good recommendations.
Went to lunch on a weekday, restaurant was vibrant and lively especially the bar area with the World Cup. Our waitress was friendly and pleasant. We ordered the sliders, oysters, and jumbo crab cake appetizer. Generous portions, everything was delicious!
We came here for my birthday dinner and I can without say this is the best steakhouse in the city. Not sure what it is, but so far the best steaks I've had are from places that offer more of an "old school" Chicago classic vibe. The more modern and "upscale" steakhouses haven't really been serving good steaks. The service here as phenomenal. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and was able to get seated immediately. Our server was great, very professional and made sure our night went smoothly. They started us off with bread & butter and I also got myself a glass of wine. We also ordered their soup of the day which was Lobster Bisque. My wife ordered their Filet Mignon. And I ordered their WRs Chicago Cut. I ordered my steak medium rare and it was perfectly cooked. The steak was very tender and juicy, not too fatty and just the right amount of seasoning. My wife's filet was just as delicious. We also ordered a side of mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts that came with maple bourbon butter and bacon. I will adjust two sides was a bit much for the both of us. Overall we left extremely satisfied and full. I can definitely see myself returning in the near future. There still a couple more steakhouses to try on my list, but this one checked off all the right boxes to skip others ones on the list to return to this one a lot sooner.
Went for lunch, first time in Chicago. We sat outside. Vibes are nice. Wind picked up and water and leaves fell on my hubs leaving him wet and leaves went in our drink and waters. Hostess promptly moved our seats. I had the tuna melt ( a little too greasy for me) hubs had the burger. I did see someone get the turtle for dessert and it looked great. I thought it was fine. Maybe dinner is better?
Classic spot with fun ambiance. We ordered the bone-in ribeye, brussel sprouts and fries. All delicious. Loved our waiter.
My husband and I went to lunch here today for Chicago Restaurant Week. What a great meal and deal! The menu includes bread for the table, a choice of salad or soup, steak frites, and crème brûlée. So much food! The barley and beef soup I had was fantastic. And the steak was so well prepared, I was very pleased (I ordered it medium). We have never been to Gibsons before, but I understand it's just one of these Chicago spots you have to go to at least once. We had a great time. The ambiance is very Chicago, the staff was very nice, and we didn't have trouble finding street parking. I do know though if you're visiting for dinner or on the weekends, parking in the area is tricky. All in all- I highly recommend!

This review focuses on the private dining room and amazing service that led to an incredible night full of memories. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Gibson's main dining area is busy, bustling, and full of people downstairs. Upstairs, our group dined in the private dining room. It was large, spacious, with a wine cellar in the back. The ceiling was lined with dark wood beams and a private bar sat outside our room. Best of all, the noise level was much lower so we could enjoy each other's conversations. 1 Star. Service - Our primary coordinator was Mary Kate. She made sure everything was in order, including timing of our meal. We also had a bartender in the room who could make us drinks, and if they couldn't, they would custom order it from the bar. An army of servers dressed in sharp, white jackets would ensure each of us had an amazing experience. 1 Star. Food - Once our party arrived, our food immediately came out (the menu had already been selected). First up, the seafood tower had a plate of huge, plump shrimp, crab salad, and oysters. We also had fried calamari. But let's get real, the reason Gibson has "Steakhouse" in the name is because the steaks are amazing. I had the Chicago cut (bone in ribeye), and the prime steak was so tender and perfectly grilled medium rare. The seasoning was simple, so the beef flavor could shine. My steak was so tender and flavorful - one of the best steaks I've ever had at a restaurant. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. Now, I realize this was a private dining experience. I want to return to dine in the main dining room. I'm sure the food and service will still be outstanding. Thank you, Gibson's (and Mary Kate) for, helping our family create more memories. 1 Star.
Gibsons has an old school vibe to the place. Offering classic options from land and sea. Steaks, seafood, classic entrees, and great appetizers. This is a pretty happening place especially on the weekend. A very lively bar area complete with TVs to watch the latest game on. Service was great and the food was delicious. If you are looking for great classic spot this is a great spot to grab drinks or food.

Right from the beginning, we didn't feel any warmth or hospitality. The food quality was okay overall, but nothing particularly memorable. The menu options also felt somewhat limited. When we asked why the bread was cold, the server simply told us, "We serve it that way," which felt dismissive rather than helpful. Between the service and the food presentation, it wasn't the level of dining experience we were expecting.
I hadn't been to Gibsons in quite a few years, but I always remembered it as one of the best steakhouses I'd ever eaten at. Going to Chicago with my wife for a long weekend, Gibsons was a must go to! The restaurant didn't disappoint, it was just as good as I remembered. The service here is first class. I loved it when our server came over showing all the cuts of beef, along with detailing how it's cooked at 1800 degrees. We each ordered filets medium rare. The steaks were delicious, served with Bearnaise sauce. The side of creamed spinach was perfect with the meal. When I made the reservation on Open Table I noted it was our Anniversary dinner. A real touch of class by this restaurant was serving us an ice cream parfait with a candle after dinner. Not something they had to do, but very nice! If you're looking for a meal to remember or a celebration, I definitely recommend Gibsons!

I had a great lunch experience here yesterday! I am visiting friends in Chicago and we had a reservation yesterday. We were seated right away and the service was quick and efficient! I had the lychee martini and grilled chicken sandwich. The martini was delish and full of flavor. I loved the chicken sandwich! The crispy onion strings and buffalo aioli were a great addition. And I loved the fries it came with! Overall, loved lunch and will definitely be back next time I'm in Chicago! read more

Gibson's are known for a reason. Their knowledge about their steak's and their grading and classes were amazing to learn. We were so full from this meal and walked out happy and planning another time to come back. The steak was unlike any steak we have had and worth the price. The sliders although seemingly simple was filling and made with quality meat not ground pork/beef. We throughly enjoyed their side of chicken noodle soup where it was hearty, filling and all ingredients cooked to perfection. Even their baked potato was a great side to have. Although we couldn't finish it all we had it for left overs and it was still delicious the next day. The waiter greeted us and made us feel welcomed, We never felt rushed and were so excited to see what others got so we would have a list of what we want for next time. The environment although busy was tasteful and relaxing. read more

Classic Steakhouse. A bit unorganized on arrival and seated 1/2 after our reserved time slot booked in advance. But, the vibe is comfortably noisy and the service -- from professional, yet engaging old school waiters, was top notch. Nicely done! Shrimp cocktail did not disappoint. Wedge salad gets an A+, fantastic blue cheese dressing! Beef barley soup way up the chart of hearty, meat and barley-filled deliciousness! Chicago cut steak for me was perfectly cooked, with a great outer char and hot pink inside. My friend's steak was semi-raw on the first try, but came back just fine after further cooking. Spinach and twice baked potato were tasty sides. Great meal! read more

Truly deserving of 5 stars. We were seated in about 1/2 hour without a reservation which was nice, but I highly recommend that you make a reservation for a great experience. We all ordered the Chicago Cut since this place is known for it and we were all pleased. It was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth with every bite. read more
Another great Chicago restaurant! We stopped in after an afternoon of wandering the streets of Chicago. Lucky us! There was a lovely outside table available. We decided to split a rack of ribs and a wedge salad. The kitchen went above and beyond-chopping up our salad and splitting the Ribs for us. Delicious!!!! 10/10 The service was excellent, the food divine and the weather gorgeous. read more

Perfect day for an outing, and Gibsons delivered on every level. The weather was beautiful, which made the experience even more enjoyable. A reservation is definitely recommended - this spot is popular for good reason. From start to finish, the service was exceptional: attentive, friendly, and professional. The food was outstanding - steaks were cooked to perfection and incredibly juicy. The sides were equally impressive, packed with flavor. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a top-tier steakhouse experience in Chicago. read more
It seems that Gibsons will always be a classic solid steakhouse. I came here for my bday and enjoyed the food plus atmosphere. I had a 12 oz prime rib, sautéed spinach, and a plain baked potato. The Prime rib was flavorful and seasoned well. The highlight was having an oz of Louis XIII cognac. They rolled it out on a silver cart and gave a whole presentation which seemed like it lasted 5 minutes before pouring it up. The fragrance was heavy, yet this was the smoothest drink I have ever had. Also tasted just delightful in every way. I hate I didn't get any photos, but I'm sure there will be a next time. read more

G (o) -- Go for a special occasion W (ow) -- Wowed by the service, and honestly great free bread. Walked in knowing the steak was going to wow, but the quality bread was a welcome surprise. A (mbiance) -- Detailed and attentive service. The servers bring out a selection of steaks for you to take your pick and make specific recommendations of sides to pair them with. M (enu) -- Best item was the WR Chicago Cut - cooked to a beautiful medium rare. Big enough for leftovers! Runner up was the sides: the elote featured a hint of lime, generous parmesan cheese, a kick from the chili powder, and mayonnaise to top it all off. A great respite from the umami of the steak. The mushrooms were grilled to perfection, releasing a delicious, mouthwatering aroma. Personally was not a huge fan of the New York Strip but that may be on me for ordering it medium well instead of medium rare. It was rather dry. read more
A wonderful atmosphere with a great waiter (Michael). He really interacted with the table and kids to showcase what makes Gibsons unique and made some great recommendations for a family of 4. We had the: - WR Cut Chicago Style (ribeye) - Miso sea bass - Asparagus - Sweet potato Michael gifted us a giant Turtle cake for my birthday, which has 1/4 gallon of ice cream, graham cracker crust, and coated in macadamia nuts and chocolate sauce. Amazingly delicious but good lord, you need 8+ people to eat this thing! read more

Used to go relatively frequently years ago so wanted to try again while in town for the Holidays. Our server Nicole made sure we had the kind of evening we hoped for. Everyone enjoyed their food and drinks and of course we had to order the carrot cake. Had a great table so we could watch the big snowflakes fall . Just a great evening and dinner. read more

As always. Gibsons is amazing Came with the family for a dinner. Started with shrimp and salad for all and added oysters,.. what a classic Salads. Bread. Soup. Yeah. All that and more Dinners Tomahawk - nice large portion perfectly cooked juicy and full of flavour NY Strip 19 oz. Perfectly cooked with a level of tenderness that was surprising Lobster was colossal. Well worth it. Service was a little slow but the server who was assigned to us was great. I highly recommend this place. read more

Solid 4 Stars for the favorite spot in Chicago downtown area's most famous tourist centric restaurant situated just three blocks from the Magnificent Mile! The restaurant is surrounded by several other famous restaurants all owned by the same owner and his descendants! The original store opened its doors before the Second World War and has been in existence since. The entire entrance upstairs to the bathrooms are adorned with signed photographs of old and new celebrities! They have fantastic service and fast response to any requests. They have the best wait staffs in town. They also have one of the best steaks and chicken but the vegetables are salty! Overall solid four stars for everything touristy. read more

Stopped in with friends on a Friday night with no reservations but we were able to find a high top table in the bar area. This is a bustling steakhouse, so make reservations if you want dining room seating. The servers were very busy but got to us as soon as they could. We didn't have room for the colossal carrot cake, but I will be back to try it! Love: filet sliders (best seasoned & cooked to temp steak I've had anywhere); fries (fresh, hot, seasoned well) Like: brussel sprouts Dislike: complimentary bread (wasn't warmed, might be good for someone else's taste) read more

Do you get a small salad with purchase of a steak?
Yes you do! Choice of four dressings I believe. The salad is the best option. I believe they offer a soup (mushroom when I went) but everyone gets the salad.
Can you eat at the bar? And if so, can you walk in, or do you need reservations for the bar area too?
Yes you can eat at the bar, no reservations needed.

Do they offer a 6oz or 8oz filet?
As of Feb 2018 yes they DO offer the smaller filet with potatoes and vegetable. It is on the menu about halfway down.
Family of four with a 12yr old and 15 year old both light eaters. Can we eat family style? Meaning share 2 entrees and a bunch of sides among us? Is there a minimum charge per person? Thanks in advance.
Yes, two entrees would be enough. I went with my partner and we ordered one entree, one side dish and an appetizer (lobster claw so very small) and it was a lot more than enough food for us. I would not think they would have a minimum credit card…
Would it be best to make a reservation. I'm coming from San Diego,Ca?
if you come for lunch, it should be ok to walk in. Would recommend to get a reservation if you are for dinner especially at weekends

No, you don't have to dress up. I'd advise looking nice, but it's like most fancy places... more about your attitude and how you feel. Dress nicely, but be comfortable and have fun!
