The stylist, Maria, looked at my daughter's hair ("D." is half Samoan) and said,"I used to work in Cali and have lots of experience cutting black girls hair." This woman went on to yank a brush roughly through D's hair as she went on to say that most stylists in Salem would take one look at D's "black girl's hair" and refuse to cut so it would be best to just come back to see her. D's money fell out of her pocket onto the floor so she leaned forward to pick it up. Maria grabbed the apron/smock that was tied around D's neck and pulled backwards, instructing D to sit up. This resulted in D getting choked a bit. At this point, I was starting to wonder what Maria's problem was. We had asked for hair thinning and long, angled bangs. Maria thinned D's hair and when D asked that it be thinned more, Maria used the thinning scissors about 2 inches from the scalp. Now, I'm no hair stylist but it seems to me that if you cut very curly, kinky, frizzy textured hair that short it would just curl up and stick out, right? Then Maria chopped D's bangs. It was awful. I have pictures of the uneven, choppy, and very ugly job. D. paid and left then sat in the car with me and started crying. She felt so horrible about both the way her hair looked and for being told that no one would want to cut her "black girl's hair". Since Maria had given me her card with her cell number, I called and spoke to her when I got home. She apologized and said she would refund my daughter's money the next day. I took D. in the next morning and Maria handed us a refund as soon as we walked in. I thanked her for the refund and told her I still needed to speak to her. She had a customer in her chair but I had to let this woman know that what she said, how she treated my daughter, and how badly she cut D's hair was just so wrong. She did apologize repeatedly to my daughter although she insisted that she did cut properly. I thanked her for apologizing to my daughter and then left. I am posting pics so you can all see what I am talking about. The pic on the left is after Maria cut D's bangs. Pic on right is after my friend, who is not a stylist, trimmed and cleaned up Maria's work. I would caution anyone with non-Caucasian hair from getting a haircut from this person. This was a very bad experience for my daughter.

It can seem closed off but it provides some privacy for those who don't like others to see them without their hair fixed (or wrapped in foils or rods). Customer service is amazing and personal. Other stylist even learn your name and greet you (if they're not already engaged with their own clients). My stylist has done almost every color and style on my hair, and my hair has gone from straight to curly to wavy and she has always found a cut that fit my style, face, and at the level of maintenance I was willing to keep up with.

However, most of the separate stations don't get any natural light (which makes it feel dark and also causes me to wonder how the stylist can pick the right hair color for clients...??). The stylists set their own schedules so its easy to find a good time. I was reasonably pleased with my cut and color. Parking is easy, since there is a private lot and for a bargain price, I got a reasonably nice hair cut. TIP: stylists only accept cash or check -- NO DEBIT or CREDIT cards (you've been warned).

I took a star off because the company policies need to be explained better. I originally called and asked about 5 people and said I needed to leave by 11 am to stay on schedule. I was told 2 stylists could have us in at 9 am and out by 11 am. When I called to do the final confirmation, we had 4 people who wanted to get their hair done and I was the only make-up. The business never told me that 5 people is the minimum for 2 stylists and they changed my appointment to end at noon. When I came to do my trial run on my hair is when I found out we wouldn't be done until noon. One person was on the fence about coming in, so we ended up only doing 3 girls. Obviously for a wedding timeline having a vendor change the schedule by an hour without mentioning it is a bit of a crisis. Elvi saved the day by agreeing to come in 30 minutes early to get started and had us out of there shortly after 11 am. I highly recommend her - she was great to work with and took a situation that could have been very bad and helped us find a work around.

My elderly mother and her caregiver set an appointment for Anthony to cut her hair. Anthony promised my mother that he could see her at 1:30 and that she would have "the whole place to herself." When that day came, my mother and her caregiver arrived a little before 1:30 to find Anthony working on two other women with loud rock music blaring. My mother patiently waited 45 minutes for Anthony to finish. When he sat her down, he looked at her hair and said, "I can tell you like wearing your hair up." My mom's never worn her hair up and said so. That information tipped Anthony over the edge of sanity. He said, "You're not going to like how I do your hair, so you should leave." My mother is patient and tolerant and said she would like him to try his best. Anthony yelled at her and her caregiver to leave; he closed and locked the door behind them and threatened to call the police if they didn't leave his property. Anthony, you are a deplorable person.
