Finding an affordable option for a phlebotomy program was difficult. I was happy that a colleague of a friend suggested this school. I was able to take the advance phlebotomy class and finish in 8 classes. The instructor was knowledgeable and encouraged everyone to participate in discussion. Shalon prepared the students for the qualifying exam as well as techniques needed to enter the work force. I would absolutely recommend this program and school. read more

Don't accidentally get injured and work and miss class to attend your orthopedic appointments because even if you do provide a doctors note that the administrator highlights the date on, it will still be counted against you. To say I drew the short end of the straw would be an understatement I paid $800 to not be certified or compensated for the time and gas wasted :) If I weren't a college student making minimum wage I wouldn't be so mad but again to draw the short end of the straw over a medical issue I had no intention of happening and have it used against you is really upsetting. Unfortunately, I can only give this school two stars. I have just recently finished a phlebotomy course this summer and been certified as well. First of all, the amount of ominous specificity of the requirements for externships is the bulk of my grievances. I was told that if I did not turn in a document by a certain date or time that I would be completely dropped from the program and would have to file an appeal. This appeal is reviewed by the Appeals Board which we do not know who is on, just the director of it. I was given this information, which was about a document that was "invalid", about two days before this document had to be turned in. This document though, could have taken more days if not weeks, so they warned. Luckily, it only took 24 hours and I was grateful that I wasn't dropped from the program. Secondly, the externship was supposed to be 40 hours but the hours that I was scheduled would have totaled out to be 42.5 hours in just one week. I was not given the name or contact information of my preceptor, so when I entered a facility adjoined with the site I was supposed to be at, I lost my way and ended up in the wrong place. I went with a different phlebotomist and did what I was supposed to do, observing, just with someone different. I lost about 1.5 hours doing this.. still equaling about 41 hours. I was then contacted that I was in violation of the attendance policy (because of a simple misunderstanding) and then I had to file an appeal to this ominous and anonymous appeals board. I got approved 24 hours later. Thirdly, my preceptor was not a good teacher. She had an attitude most of the time and was not very polite to her patients. I actually felt bad for them. A poor hispanic man who could not speak english was refused help because she was not bilingual and when I offered to take him to where he needed to go, I was advised to give him verbal directions and nothing else. Incredibly impolite. Of course, I remained polite throughout my entire externship even though she treated me like I did not go through school and that her patients were hers and no one else's because they are her regulars. Despite this, she wrote on my evaluation that I had an attitude and my week did not start off well but that I improved toward the end. The only positive experience I had was that my instructor and peers were very kind people not afraid to make mistakes and not afraid to correct in ways that are beneficial to me and other students. I definitely would not recommend my externship site to anyone and would strongly advise them to even just go to another school because of my experiences with the externship coordinating. I am grateful that I received my certification anyway, but I had a very stressful week because of the inconsiderate attitudes, poor instruction, and unnecessarily stressful process of the externship. read more

THEY DON'T CATER TO WORKING ADULTS WHO WORK THE MORNING SHIFT. This place is very economical, but you get what you pay. My sister and i took this class at 5:30pm. We thought this would be a great fit for us because we work mornings. Here is a list of things that concerned us: 1. The first day of class we had to draw blood off of one another while the instructor was watching us. One student got a hematoma due to the inexperience of the student drawing the first day. 2. We were cramped up in a small room. 3. We were working out of an Ohio based phlebotomy book. 4. 3 weeks into class we were preparing to do our externship and they only offered externships in the morning. 5. Before we could start class we had a full day of filling out legal paperwork. 6. We took notes for 2-3 hours 7. Spoke with HR regarding our externship and they were very dismissive 8. Its located in Naperville and not Chicago The externship was upsetting because we worked in the morning and they gave us a small time frame to complete it. The externship locations were far from my home and work (south side of Chicago and downtown). They did offer an externship downtown, but you had to cover the expense for parking. We dropped the class and they kept our money. I decided to go to another school that was a little more pricey, but worth it. The other school I attend is very professional (ICI). This is what you should have: 1. The room is not cramped, lots of space. 2. Very professional 3. Works out of a phlebotomy school based book 4. We use a dummy arm to draw blood, get the skill down and then we do live draws. 5. The class is taught by a physician 6. We have IDs. and we didn't have a day of reading and signing documents. All documents were signed online before class started. 7. They have externships sites are 24 hours and located in Chicago and the far south Chicago (greater Chicagoland area) 8. The externship can be paid and you can work at the site after you receive your certificate. read more

Unimpressed. I enrolled in the phlebotomy course for 7 weeks at about $750. The school is hidden in Naperville and it was difficult to find at first. When you go inside the class, it's a congested nightmare with no room to spare. My teacher was average, she was nice enough. The course book was sort of hard to follow and the way the teachers presented the material was not that great. Just a heads up this school has a zero retake policy on final exams and you will be dropped from the course. Come time for the final and I felt ready better than anything to take the test. Comes time to test I miss the passing grade by 3 points. Right after the test is graded I get a cut and dry email stating I was dropped from the course. In my opinion I believe that is complete bullshit and I feel like I was robbed of my money. Youre better off going to a junior college than any sort of 'trade school' for phlebotomy. Atleast they will prepare you better ! read more

Disclaimer: The following is my OWN/PERSONAL experience with the school, therefore it is not meant to steer anyone in one direction or the other and it is not meant to define another person's experience, since it is simply MY thoughts and impressions. If I could give this school zero stars, I would. The most positive thing that I could say is that we had an excellent instructor (will not mention their name in order to protect their privacy). Our instructor was a very practical and an absolutely outstanding instructor who truly cared for their students, and did everything they possibly could to help us succeed, while making sure that we knew the material. I don't know why such a great person like them would teach at such a terrible school like the Chicago School of Phlebotomy! I had taken the CCMA course at this school, and I would say that it was the most unprofessional, disorganized, and simply pathetic experience ever. To begin with, there were several times where our class was supposed to have a substitute for the day (note that our instructor had already spoken to the school in advance, letting them know that they would not be available to teach during this time, and the school assured our instructor that they would find someone else to sub for them), and the substitute simply did not show up. We had no idea (neither did our instructor) as to where the CSP of getting these people from to substitute! There was also an instance where we got an email and phone call the very morning of the class day, telling us that the class time has been changed for the day to an earlier slot. This is extremely inconvenient, especially if you are driving from a city that is further away and have to get through heavy traffic in the morning as well, just because you've gotten information that a schedule has changed last minute. Secondly, at the start of the program, we signed several legal education documents to assure that us students and the CSP would abide by these terms and circumstances- of many which, the school did NOT comply with. There was a lot of unknown information as well that was not written anywhere in the terms and conditions, and the school held us students accountable for this, and expected us to abide by it. For example, there is an option to sign up for a payment plan to pay the tuition (an absolute waste of $1,800) of the course. There are 3 payment plans, all of which require you to pay an amount from the start of the course (week 1) until the end of the course (week 11), in a weekly payment format. The day before our final exam (week 10), we were told that we must pay our entire remaining balance (week 10 AND week 11) payment in order for us to take our final exam. Our final exam was in week 10, and our certification exam was week 11 (yes, there are 2 different exams for the course, that are 1 week apart from each other when they actually should be the same week, which is week 11- the last week of the course). If we did not pay our remaining balance before the final exam, we would not be able to take the final exam. This piece of information was not listed anywhere! On the website and the documents, it was said that our payments would span the entire time (from week 1-week 11) and nowhere did it say that we had to pay our full remaining balance by the time of the final exam. For some, paying the full remaining balance at once is far too much (me being one of them), and it is absolutely outrageous that they left out this piece of information (along with many others). Another issue was that the CSP did not allow our instructor to prepare us for assessments with study guides or any other resources. For the information that we were learning (extremely complex material), it was very necessary that we needed some guidance so we knew what to focus on, since there was an immense and overwhelming amount of information- but the school did not allow it. It's super easy to sit in a chair all day and make rules/demands for a school while being hungry for money and paying no heed to the teacher and students, but only the teacher and students themselves understand the true challenges that are associated with teaching and learning at a pathetic school like CSP! Finally, I would just like to say that I am extremely dissatisfied with my experience at the CSP and do not feel like I've gotten my moneys-worth. My experience was filled with unprofessionalism, missing substitutes, disorganization, last minute changes, poorly conveyed information/miscommunication, and unreliability. I could write so, so much more, but there is simply not enough character space for me to type in. I would definitely not recommend this school to anyone if this is their first time getting a certification in something (it was my first!), they are not a credible school in any way. Save your time, money, energy: and go to a school that actually cares about their rep. Do your most thorough and best research before signing up for a program! read more

Amazing education, and only took several weeks to complete. Class was hands-on and fast-paced. The school has high standards, and they take safety and academics really seriously, which I appreciate as a grad working in the field. I got a job within 3 weeks of graduation... the manager at the hospital where I applied said they love phlebotomists from this school because they come on with good skills every single time. My only complaint is you get lots of emails throughout the class, but these are generally usefuly, just a little much. I'll be reccommending to everyone read more
