My friend and I visited Chicken Coop on a Sunday drive returning from Ruckersville, VA to our home in Winston-Salem, NC. It was an easy quick detour off of 29. The parking lot was really busy when we arrived. We parked closer to the car wash on the far right side of the lot and approached the exterior order window. I ordered a hot dog and a two piece chicken meal with two sides. I got two thighs with fried apples and mac and cheese. My friend ordered a hot dog with waffle fries and a side of green beans. But she had to purchase her drink seperately inside (?). We took a seat inside at the large high table and got our beverage from the mini Coke freestyle machine inside the convenience store. Our food was ready quickly. Everything was really good. The hot dogs were darn near great. Only things that would have made them perfect would have been a slightly thicker dog and a toasted bun. Chili and cole slaw were great. They use Moore's Original Hot Dogs from nearby Lynchburg, which I like a lot. Macaroni and cheese was super cheesy and well-seasoned. Fried apples were really good too and a GENEROUS serving. Chicken had a nice crispy skin that had great flavor. The roll was good with a nice spread of butter on it. All in all, a really fun stop. My friend picked up a chocolate mousse cake for the road which she was pleased with. Take a break from your drive on 29 and grab a bite at Chicken Coop.

I just feel like that if there is somebody over her which I know there is somebody really needs to talk to her because that's not good customer service and that's why that particular McDonald's and I live in Nelson born and raised that's why that particular McDonald's has the ratings that it does because of people or management like her. She was very rude and very unprofessional and at this point it looks very ugly as a person.

We tried talking into the speaker but assumed it was broken due to no one speaking on it. We waited in line and would've backed out but couldn't, so we waited to make our order at the window. Once we got there Amanda came to the window and we could tell he was upset. I asked her if the speaker was broken in which she replied "No. I told you to wait. I was busy." I then asked ok can we place our order here and she responded with, " no you can leave. Then slammed the windows in our faces." I went in and asked for the manner. She was clearly overwhelmed and immediately told me they were short staffed. At this point Amanda was in the back complaining. The manager did do the right thing and took my order, but she took no ownership for her employee and chalked it up to being short staffed. Amanda then was slamming drawers, complaining loudly for everyone to hear and was so rude to employee Tyler who was honestly the only good service in that place. He was apologizing to people, being very nice and even apologized to me for the bad service. He was trying. Employee Amanda is a poison in the place and needs to be terminated. The manager did nothing to rein her in and allowed her to complain for the whole 15 min I was in there waiting for my food. The WORST experience I've had at a fast food restaurant. Hire more Tyler's.

But the beer had other ideas. As expected, it was excellent--cold, confident, and clearly in no mood to be rushed. Everything was clean and orderly. The burger arrived and did not disappoint. Honest, well-made, the sort of meal that reminds you why you ordered it in the first place. My wife's brisket sandwich, meanwhile, was everything brisket ought to be--tender, rich, and just indulgent enough to feel like a reward rather than a mistake. Fries came alongside, hot and crisp, doing their job without complaint or ceremony. And then, on the way out--as these things tend to happen--we stopped at the bar. That's where we met Vance. What followed was less a quick cocktail and more a conversation with drinks attached. The cocktails were excellent, but the company made them memorable. Vance makes a great adult beverage. All in all, Devil's Backbone isn't just a place to eat and drink. It's a place where a simple plan quietly turns into a better evening than you expected.

Oh well. Third time was NOT the charm. If you saw my previous review of Dave's, you know I had a…read morebit of a love affair going on with this place. So, love woke me up today, and I decided that, despite changing my eating habits prior to my summer beach trip... I had to go to Dave's. Beach be damned. I needed Dave's. I mean, if you're going to break your diet, this is the only place to do it. I decided to go off script and try something different. Those little chicken bites looked appetizing and the new giant mozzarella stick was interesting. I ordered the chicken bites with the hot honey sauce... And one mozzarella thing with the very spicy sauce/flavor... The first thing that rubbed me the wrong way was that, right as I was starting to pay, the cashier decided to hit me with a 30 second diatribe about the tip button on the POS system. I just read an article about how tipping has gotten out of control in America. We used to tip for exceptional service. Now we tip because we breathe. I always overtip for exceptional service. Believe it or not, I am hypersensitive about being an African-American and how the entire race might be viewed if I don't tip well. So I tip well. But I don't like having to tip for a fast food meal. It's the same thing at Starbucks. If I pay $10 for a cup of coffee, I shouldn't have to pay another two dollars to the person who just happened to take my order. Let's be real, they don't even take our credit cards and swipe them anymore. We are doing all the work at the counter, so why tip them. When the guy at the counter told me that there was a tip option, and then explained in detail who the tip went to at Dave's.... I felt like I was being forced to throw extra money on what was already a $21 meal. I bought what amounted to some chicken nuggets, with a handful of fries, and a giant mozzarella stick. And a Coke. It was almost $22. That same meal would've cost 11 not too long ago. And now, you're trying to guilt me into adding a tip of 20%. That would take the bill up to $26 for some fricking chicken nuggets. Insane. So, I only gave a dollar as a tip, which only seemed to irritate the cashier. Now, on to the food. In my previous two trips, the chicken seemed premium. It was great quality, and the meals were wonderful. Today, those chicken nuggets seemed like second rate chicken. I had to spit one of them out because inside was fatty. The rest of them were stringy. I was five nuggets in before I found one that actually had the type of consistency that I would expect from eating chicken. It was pretty gross. My fries were not hot. I was honestly sitting there, wondering if they served me tepid fries because I did not tip big. The mozzarella stick was delicious though. I am admitting that I will go back just for that in the future. And the drinks are always good. They have the perfect ratio of syrup to carbonation. So, to sum it up. I got accosted by the tip police for a take out meal...the meal itself looked great when they handed it to me, but it was bad in two of three areas....bad chicken consistency and fries that died in the window. Thank goodness this was my third trip, so I will try them again. I just won't be getting those second rate chicken bites. And next time I'm not tipping a penny. Come on, Dave.
