My friend and I visited Chicken Coop on a Sunday drive returning from Ruckersville, VA to our home in Winston-Salem, NC. It was an easy quick detour off of 29. The parking lot was really busy when we arrived. We parked closer to the car wash on the far right side of the lot and approached the exterior order window. I ordered a hot dog and a two piece chicken meal with two sides. I got two thighs with fried apples and mac and cheese. My friend ordered a hot dog with waffle fries and a side of green beans. But she had to purchase her drink seperately inside (?). We took a seat inside at the large high table and got our beverage from the mini Coke freestyle machine inside the convenience store. Our food was ready quickly. Everything was really good. The hot dogs were darn near great. Only things that would have made them perfect would have been a slightly thicker dog and a toasted bun. Chili and cole slaw were great. They use Moore's Original Hot Dogs from nearby Lynchburg, which I like a lot. Macaroni and cheese was super cheesy and well-seasoned. Fried apples were really good too and a GENEROUS serving. Chicken had a nice crispy skin that had great flavor. The roll was good with a nice spread of butter on it. All in all, a really fun stop. My friend picked up a chocolate mousse cake for the road which she was pleased with. Take a break from your drive on 29 and grab a bite at Chicken Coop.

We always search for interesting food stops when we travel. We were traveling from Lynchburg to Charlottesville and saw this recommended so we stopped! What a fun find. After placing your order at the walk-up window you then go inside to get your drink. The food was ready quickly and we were pleasantly surprised at how delicious everything was. We tried the white and dark meat, mashed potatoes and green beans along with the roll. The service was quick and the setting, a gas station, is great. I didn't see any tables but our plan was to eat in the car so I may have missed them.

She was very rude and very unprofessional and at this point it looks very ugly as a person.

I stopped by with a friend on 6/23/26 at 9.46am to buy breakfast, on a roadtrip, we were excited and greeted the cashier to your left when facing the counter and we may as well been talking to a wall! I understand it's morning and she may not want to be there so grace is given but what gets me is 1. After ordering is when I'm told I can't pay with the chick fil a rewards or money (I've never been to a store that didn't take chick fil a rewards & scan for payment). And #2 , no receipt and I realize I'm overcharged!! We got one meal that came with hash browns and a drink + one order of 4ct minis total $25.42 . Again trying to explain this but like I said it's like I was talking to a brick wall. Arggh , the hashbrowns were crumbled , the minis bread were stale, they said the coffee machine was broken for the hot coffee but somehow for the meal order gave her iced coffee. Honestly even if the service would have been good I still would have mentioned the food and overcharge. I took a picture as a time stamp when we left just to be accurate. Honestly unless they change up the food and service, you may as well go to a mom & pops breakfast place nearby , than support this store.

But the beer had other ideas. As expected, it was excellent--cold, confident, and clearly in no mood to be rushed. Everything was clean and orderly. The burger arrived and did not disappoint. Honest, well-made, the sort of meal that reminds you why you ordered it in the first place. My wife's brisket sandwich, meanwhile, was everything brisket ought to be--tender, rich, and just indulgent enough to feel like a reward rather than a mistake. Fries came alongside, hot and crisp, doing their job without complaint or ceremony. And then, on the way out--as these things tend to happen--we stopped at the bar. That's where we met Vance. What followed was less a quick cocktail and more a conversation with drinks attached. The cocktails were excellent, but the company made them memorable. Vance makes a great adult beverage. All in all, Devil's Backbone isn't just a place to eat and drink. It's a place where a simple plan quietly turns into a better evening than you expected.

We visited around 3:00 p.m., well before the dinner rush, so we weren't expecting service delays or other issues. Unfortunately, the food was bland, overly oily, and significantly overpriced for the quality. We used to come here regularly and always enjoyed it, but it just isn't what it once was. The dining area was also uncomfortably warm, as the air conditioning didn't appear to be on. The only relief came when the kitchen door opened. Service felt rushed and impersonal as well--we were greeted with a curt "Where do you want this plate?" when our food arrived, which didn't make us feel particularly welcome. The property itself remains a lovely place to spend some time outdoors, but based on this visit, we wouldn't recommend it as a destination for dinner. We hope the restaurant can return to the level of quality and hospitality it once offered.

So, love woke me up today, and I decided that, despite changing my eating habits prior to my summer beach trip... I had to go to Dave's. Beach be damned. I needed Dave's. I mean, if you're going to break your diet, this is the only place to do it. I decided to go off script and try something different. Those little chicken bites looked appetizing and the new giant mozzarella stick was interesting. I ordered the chicken bites with the hot honey sauce... And one mozzarella thing with the very spicy sauce/flavor... The first thing that rubbed me the wrong way was that, right as I was starting to pay, the cashier decided to hit me with a 30 second diatribe about the tip button on the POS system. I just read an article about how tipping has gotten out of control in America. We used to tip for exceptional service. Now we tip because we breathe. I always overtip for exceptional service. Believe it or not, I am hypersensitive about being an African-American and how the entire race might be viewed if I don't tip well. So I tip well. But I don't like having to tip for a fast food meal. It's the same thing at Starbucks. If I pay $10 for a cup of coffee, I shouldn't have to pay another two dollars to the person who just happened to take my order. Let's be real, they don't even take our credit cards and swipe them anymore. We are doing all the work at the counter, so why tip them. When the guy at the counter told me that there was a tip option, and then explained in detail who the tip went to at Dave's.... I felt like I was being forced to throw extra money on what was already a $21 meal. I bought what amounted to some chicken nuggets, with a handful of fries, and a giant mozzarella stick. And a Coke. It was almost $22. That same meal would've cost 11 not too long ago. And now, you're trying to guilt me into adding a tip of 20%. That would take the bill up to $26 for some fricking chicken nuggets. Insane. So, I only gave a dollar as a tip, which only seemed to irritate the cashier. Now, on to the food. In my previous two trips, the chicken seemed premium. It was great quality, and the meals were wonderful. Today, those chicken nuggets seemed like second rate chicken. I had to spit one of them out because inside was fatty. The rest of them were stringy. I was five nuggets in before I found one that actually had the type of consistency that I would expect from eating chicken. It was pretty gross. My fries were not hot. I was honestly sitting there, wondering if they served me tepid fries because I did not tip big. The mozzarella stick was delicious though. I am admitting that I will go back just for that in the future. And the drinks are always good. They have the perfect ratio of syrup to carbonation. So, to sum it up. I got accosted by the tip police for a take out meal...the meal itself looked great when they handed it to me, but it was bad in two of three areas....bad chicken consistency and fries that died in the window. Thank goodness this was my third trip, so I will try them again. I just won't be getting those second rate chicken bites. And next time I'm not tipping a penny. Come on, Dave.
