Very unassuming little roadside BBQ place where you order at a little window and eat in your car or at the picnic table. Pulled pork sandwich was pretty standard -- not bad and with good smoke flavor but certainly nothing special, and definitely on the SWEET side. No fountain drinks; cans from a vending machine. Blue Ridge Pig, down the road in Nellys Ford, is a bit better, but not a big difference. read more

My friend and I stopped here on our way home from a hike. We both did the pulled pork sandwich platter which was $19 and it lets you pick 2 sides. I did the macaroni salad and baked beans and my friend got the mac and cheese and cole slaw. There's a vending machine with pepsi products if you'd like, we just had our waters. My friend also got the banana pudding which was yummy. The pulled pork sandwich was so delicious!! My friend loved her sides. The macaroni salad was a bit too salty for me but the baked beans were so yummy. Service was quick, we waited maybe 5 minutes. There's picnic tables you can sit at which we did. Stopped here for lunch during a road trip. The pulled pork, slaw, and baked beans were great. The ribs and cucumber salad were outstanding. I'm usually not a fan of dry rub ribs, but these tasted ah-ma-zing, in addition to being fall-off-the-bone tender. read more

I'm really not sure how people like this. The ribs are so dry. The Mac and cheese is just mush, it didn't even taste like cheese and severely overcooked noodles. The slaw, I'm willing to bet is store bought, which is fine. The pulled pork was maybe a 2/5, lacked flavor but wasn't offensive like the mac. The service was fine and super quick. They have a few picnic tables off to the side for people that don't want to eat in their car. I wouldn't recommend and wouldn't eat here again. read more

We had a long drive out to this place from Staunton, VA. We hoped it would be worth it--and in fact, it was. Driving up, Paulie's Pig Out looked like a small abandoned gas station by the side of the highway. You order through a small window and find a picnic table to sit and wait for your order. We arrived late in the day and they were out of ribs, so we all had pulled pork. The sandwiches were soft, well-seasoned, and delicious! Our sides were green beans with potatoes, mac salad, baked beans, mac and cheese, cucumber salad, and slaw. All the sides were delicious, but the stand outs were the baked beans and mac and cheese. There is no pretentiousness to this place, but STOP if you smell sweet, meaty smoke on your way on Rockfish Valley Highway east of Anton on your way through Central Virginia. There are at least four (4) flavor notes... and none are super intense: tender pork, sweet sauce, savory but not spicy herbs, and a glorious wood smoke flavor that only comes from cooking low and slow. There may be other BBQ places... but this one is stellar and deserves your attention if you're passing Afton on a Thursday to Sunday. Keeping it simple we went with the 1/2 lb. of pulled pork with two rolls, but my wife wanted to add the mac & cheese and a banana pudding. Usually pulled pork isn't my bbq go to, but this was really good. It's sauced, but not overly so. Sweet, but there's a great smoky flavor. The pork texture was perfect because it was tender without being overcooked. It wasn't pulled too thin, so you had a bit of a bite to it. Delicious and smoky! The person at the stand was hospitable and kind. There's only option for takeaway, but you can eat everything on-site outside on the wooden picnic tables. We got the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and the 1/2 smoked chicken platter (comes with two sides). We opted for the sides of baked beans and potato salad.. and it did not disappoint. Beans were sweet and smoky and the potato salad was rich yet tangy and creamy. The chicken comes with either spicy BBQ sauce or regular and we asked for both. The BBQ sauces were out of this world! Paulie's Pig Out is one of those places you'll drive by a thousand times, and never even once consider stopping at. It simply does not look like much. Yet, every so often you'll drive by and see the line, and think to yourself, "Huh, maybe I should try it out." Don't. Don't do it. Because once you've done it, you're going to be stopping every single time you drive by. This unassuming BBQ place is one of our all time favourite spots along the Rockfish Valley Highway. It's got fantastic BBQ, and the portions are insane. The pulled pork is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had, and you'll want to order sides with it -- their recipe for Mac and Cheese was gifted to Man by a poor being who is now chained to a rock somewhere. That banana pudding? Forget about "saving room" for dessert. You'll think, "Well, I am really full after that massive sandwich, but I should at least try it." Then you'll remember that human beings actually have a second dessert stomach into which the entire portion just vanished. Don't skip it. You need it, you deserve it. This place never disappoints. I was also incredibly pleased to find masks, face shields, and good social distancing being enforced during the pandemic. Pro tip -- they don't have much in the way of beverages, and right now you can't go in and grab a drink. They've got a vending machine outside, and cans are only $0.50. But, it only takes cash, so grab those quarters from between the car seats for a drink. read more

If you aren't careful you'll drive on past this place and not even notice this place. It gives off the vibe of an old gas station no longer in service. The large smokers parked out front by the road peaked my interest. Clearly this is now a "hidden" restaurant of some kind. They are only open Thursday thru Sunday yet serve up some of the best BBQ and smoked meats to be found in Nelson County. Service is impeccable ; everyone I encountered was super friendly and helpful with offering suggestions from the menu. Prices are reasonable in comparison to other local BBQ trucks/restaurants in the area. Portion size for the value is spot on - I ended up with enough for a second meal for later! They do have outdoor seating - two picnic tables off to the side. The restroom at the side of the building is extremely small (I don't recommend if you suffer from claustrophobia). Alas, it is definitely a place to check out while out on HWY 151 enjoying the many businesses out that way. read more

The smoke is always rolling at Paulie's, which is a clear sign that you should stop in; if the smoke ain't rollin' then keep on strollin'! By far the best tomato based pulled pork I've had in the valley. I also tend to get the ribs every time , they have excellent dry rub and the smoke flavor never disappoints. Great service and the owner Paulie is generally the one you see on the smoker and even running the register. He has great stories of how this restaurant came to be with family recipes. The ambiance is casual with old advertisements on the walls, I really enjoy looking at the nostalgia of old cars. BBQ has a long and storied history of being served from small hole in the wall restaurants. Only open a few days a week and sporting an atmosphere of an abandoned gas station that last saw a car in the 1950s. This location certainly fits that hole in the wall mould. At first glance I thought the prices were a bit high but once I saw the massive portions the cost seemed a little more reasonable. My wife and I could have easily shared one meal and still had leftovers. In fact, that leads me to my biggest critique of this place. I think the portions are way to big. Seriously if they cut the portions back and charged less this place would be the gold standard of VA BBQ. As a customer just know to order about half as much as you would normally and you'll be fine. Other than the portions I think it is also worth noting that the wait was long for the food and their seating is extremely limited. Still, with all those limitations I was glad we stopped by. It was the perfect blend of cheese and butter goodness. The pulled pork sandwich was tasty too. They gave you so much meat. I typically like BBQ sandwiches saucy, and this one wasn't. I wanted to like Paulie's Pig Out more, but it just was OK for me. We were recommended this place and I am a lover of all things BBQ so I excitedly went. The first issue was that we were standing outside in a line in the heat. Tough one (even though the entrance predominantly shows some smokers, which was really neat). Fortunately the food comes out very quickly. We received our food and were told we could sit in their picnic tables, which was a good option. Unfortunately, the picnic tables don't even have an umbrella so we sat there eating our hot food in under the hot sun. It was pretty miserable. I had ordered some ribs, which were pretty good, but we were not prepared for the generous portions. Same with the pulled pork sandwich. It was very good, but you do get a lot of food! Sadly, the only drinks available were from a vending machine, too. Fortunately, I had a water bottle in my car.
