Now I am not big on dill but I enjoyed it. My partner got the pulled pork Mac & cheese and the bake beans. He said he enjoyed it. It was a lot of food. Had the left overs for dinner. I ordered the smoked turkey croissant for a quick lunch. The flavor was ok but the dill pickle relish (or whatever it was) wasn't really my favorite. The turkey was the biggest let down though. It was dry and under seasoned. I understand they prob use leftover smoked turkey for the cold sandwiches, but it was very dry. I'd still like to try some of the other BBQ at some point. Stopped by again this week. Had the chicken croissant sandwich with extra dill sauce and a pulled pork sandwich with slaw and some potato salad with extra dill sauce that we split. The food is amazing. Location is great for heading up or down the mountain to Wintergreen. Service is great, outdoor dining or takeaway only. First ate here in 1988. The last ice age. Recently on a visit-- chicken had been substituted for turkey. That's a problem. And not just because I'm completely resistant to change. CASH ONLY!!! Ya'll hear me? If you're like us, you usually only carry plastic, so if you drive all the way to this out-of-the-way place and don't have enough cash on you, you'll have to make a sizable donation to the Swear Jar after driving around Nellysford to find an ATM. Hopefully, I've saved some of you that hassle. We ordered: 2 smoked turkey croissants, 1 ham croissant, 1 pint of baked beans, 1/2 pint of macaroni salad, and a large (yet tiny) sweet tea. $39. Did I mention they accept CASH ONLY? They charge extra for 'the works' on their sandwiches, which as of this writing is an extra .45 cents per tomato/lettuce/mayo/etc. Cheese is an extra .55 cents. Those add-ons do add up, and we found out the hard way that it would have been cheaper to order by the 'plate' rather than rack up the extra sides (beans, macaroni salad) by ordering them separately. We ordered take-out over the phone & didn't get the prices ahead of time, so we didn't realize this until it was too late, which was kind of a shock when we arrived twice for the bill. We arrived twice since we had to hunt down that ATM. I posted an updated menu in the photo section. Now, for the food: the ham was very salty, but moist & tasty. I liked it on the croissant, which was a nice touch. The turkey was unfortunately dry & tasteless, but the dill sauce really adds a nice touch & many people rave about it. We were very disappointed with the baked beans, they seem to just be Van de Kamps with smoked meat & vinegar added, which didn't work as well as it sounds. They should have been packed with flavor, but were very bland--although the meat was great. It just needed a kick of flavor, tomato or BBQ sauce would be a welcome touch. Macaroni salad: lacked flavor, also. Sweet tea: $2 for a large, but it was only about 10 oz. It was good. Would we go back? We are locals that had gone here once years ago, and forgot why we haven't gone here more often. Now we remember. But I would like to try their 'pig salad' which I assume is ham salad; and would also like to try their BBQ chicken. The croissants were enjoyable. I was out in the area doing some hiking and the place I was staying recommended Blue Ridge Pig for some barbecue, and the barbecue here was above average. I had the pulled pork barbecue plate. First, the sandwich was enormous. It was served on a kaiser roll which is a little unusual but turned out to be a good idea because it held up to the soft, juicy meat well. The meat flavor stood out with a touch of smoke and the sauce was understated with only a hint of vinegar. Not too much to say about the sides of potato salad and baked beans, which were on the bland side, but you don't go to a barbecue joint for the potato salad. You be the judge, if you make the same mistake. Put it this way...we ate outside at the picnic tables, next to the carwash...rather that stay inside the dark and dirty looking interior. Pulled pork platters with beans and potato salad. Meat was basically tasteless and not seasoned at all. The sauce...what there was of it, didn't add anything to the flavor. Potato salad, with green pickle juice on it, was interesting, but both my girlfriend and I ate less than half of it. The beans again were forgettable. Hidden Gem This isn't a glorious place, it's worn and run-down. But what it lacks in looks it makes up for in the amazing BBQ. Every-time my friend and I visit Wintergreen resort we come here! We typically go for the pulled pork on a kaiser roll and a lemonade. The lemonade is much too sweet but everything is perfect. The pulled pork is tangy and warm. The bun is warm but gets soggy easy. The only problem is that if you come in here and order a couple of sandwiches you'll wait for a while. There's usually only one person there, just be prepared to wait. Second time here and had great experiences both times. Keep in mind, they only take cash or check (there's an ATM nearby, no worries). There's limited seating but it's never that crowded. The ribs here are absolutely fantastic! It's smoked super well and has the perfect consistency. The sauces are also really good. BBQ pork sandwich is also delicious! The bread is nicely toasted and the meat is lean and juicy. Prices are a little high for the portion they give you, but the meat is great quality! Not too much fat and perfectly smoked. Not sure what happened between my first visit and my recent visit. Paid $17 for the rib plate and two sides to go. Get down the road and it's only 4 ribs, the cole slaw wasn't edible, the baked beans were different but tolerable. I realize the menu stated rib plate with no specification as to half rack or full rack. But anyone who dabbles in eating bbq and various smoked meats knows there are 13 ribs on each side of a pig, hog, or cow. 13 ribs. So even if the plate was only a half rack there should've been at least 6 ribs in that container. 4 ribs is only a 1/3 of a rack. A 1/3 rack of ribs with 2 quarter cup of sides, 1 of which was inedible, for $17? I can't go back based purely on principles now. So to everyone out there who enjoys eating bbq remember these words of wisdom when dealing with pork ribs. 13 ribs equals one full rack or if you're from the south, one slab. 6 to 7 ribs equals half rack or if you're from the south, half slab. Anything less than those numbers above are known in bbq circles as "cheater racks". And if an establishment is going to "cheat" their customers out of a rib or two, what else are they cheating you on. Some establishments will answer you when asked about there numbers, that's how we do ours. Immediately exit the establishment and locate a respectable bbq vendor who understands the terms half rack and full rack is not open to their interpretation. Nature already interpreted it when it decided how many ribs the animal should have. And regarding the pig and hog specifications, a pig is 249 pounds or less. A pig has less fat and is a leaner dish. A hog is 250 pounds or more, is more fatty, which in turn means more grease. Know you bbq. 2 stars bc I liked the old Blue Ridge Pig. Pigaphanalia. That's the word The Boy coined to describe the inside of this place, and if you've ever seen hundreds of different anthropomorphic pieces of pig art all crammed into a 250 square foot dining space, you'll understand why. Frankly, it was a little disturbing, but if you can get past the idea of cartoon livestock begging you to eat their tasty brethren (and if you're a barbeque fan, you'd better get over it), you're in for a treat. The Blue Ridge Pig serves hickory smoked pork and other meats in a tiny roadside stop I'm most familiar with as a gas station on the way to Wintergreen Resort, where my family holds an annual reunion. Despite the fact that we've been doing this for 18 years running, I'd never stopped at the Pig until just this July. Apparently I've been missing out. I ordered mine with coleslaw, The Boy without. If you like vinegar as a barbeque counterpoint, you'll want it with. If, like the above reviewer, non-mayo coleslaw is an abomination to all that's good and sacred about barbeque, then for god's sake don't order it. (Also, consider not giving restaurants two stars just because they don't serve the One True Style Of Coleslaw.) The pork itself is hand-pulled into a perfect fall-apart softness. Toasted kaiser rolls are a nice choice, and the sauce itself stands up well, although after all my time in Georgia, I missed the sweet note that I expect to balance out the vinegar. Also, the small taste I got of The Boy's potato salad with dill sauce was probably the best potato salad I've ever tasted (caveat: neither of us are big potato salad fans). This isn't the best barbeque I've ever had, but it's an authentic and inexpensive stop on a stretch of road with limited culinary options. A keeper. read more

Did the cook forget the salt in his dry rub? On the upside the baked beans were damn good, but we didn't come for the beans. Don't expect much from a roadside shack's decor, and I didn't. Inside is very small, maybe three tables total with 2 decades of business cards on the walls everywhere along with piggy decor everywhere around. On the menu is BBQ beef, pork, chicken, ribs & country ham. Shoot, if you like they will even smoke a whole chicken , ham or turkey for you. The sides are pretty much limited to baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad or macaroni salad and occasionally a special side will be available. On this recent visit I had the barbecue chicken sandwich with baked beans and potato salad. I really like the BBQ chicken. It is made with a tomato sauce that reminds me of a Kansas City style sauce with a little vinegar. The baked beans do in fact smell of a wonderful smoke. In truth, I did not like the BBQ pork here. Every time me and my friends go up to Wintergreen resort, stopping here is a must. We always enjoy the pulled pork on the roasted Kaiser roll. I've been going here with my family since I was little. Best in Show. BRP is the best BBQ I've ever had bar none. The brisket and pulled pork are wonderful, but you HAVE to try the RIBS. Strawberry uses big old pork spareribs, not baby-back, smokes them and then smothers them with this awesomely spicy, mustard based sauce. Sadly, Blue Ridge Pig - a place that's been on our list of places to try for years because of the praises heaped upon this BBQ joint - was a letdown for us. The culprit? Vinegar... BRP is nestled into a tiny stretch of storefronts (including the delightful Ambrosia and Basic Necessities) and a self-serve carwash along 151 in Nellysford. If not for the pink pig out front, it would be easy to miss the target. However, once parked, one's nose confirms that one is at the right place. The pervasive smoky odor of hickory - not cigarettes - confirms that real barbeque, slow-smoked on the premises, is done here. The restaurant itself is best described as a kitschy shack. First, it's tiny and dark. There's a couple of mismatched tables in the room where you order at the counter; there are a few more on the other side of the wall. Look around and you'll find business cards - tons of them - stuffed into the furring strips that hold the plywood walls and ceiling. They're even on the ceiling! Mostly, the cards hail from local enterprises; but we spotted some from other area codes and states, too. Then there's the dizzying collection of pig memorabilia on the ledges surrounding the rooms. A chalkboard lists the straight-forward menu options that include pork, chicken and beef. There are sandwich options as well as combination meat plates. Additionally, diners can elect to keep it simple and just get a sandwich or make a meal of it with sides. For our first foray, we had the pulled pig sandwich with slaw on-top and beans and potato salad as sides, washed down with sweet tea (what else?). The Kaiser roles are gently toasted and huge. The pork is hand-pulled, not chopped. The meat itself is incredibly tender and smoke-infused. But the overpowering vinegar taste from the slaw - we're guessing this was the culprit - turned us off. With apologies to those who love North Carolina-style barbeque, we don't like the vinegar flavor. We like sauce. And we prefer creamy and sweet slaw. The potato salad is dressed with a dill vinaigrette and consists of cubed potatoes and onions. It's certainly not the junk from Food Lion that winds up at summer cookouts. However, it didn't inspire happy-palate moans either. The beans, on the other hand, were delightful - just the right consistency of ingredients and sauce. We found an occasional bell pepper bit amongst the pinto beans and tangy sauce. (For the record, the beans at Jammin' Joe's (http://www.yelp.com/biz/jammin-joes-bbq-new-baltimore) in New Baltimore on 29 near Gainesville that include multiple types of beans and ground meat are not to be missed - at least the rendition we tasted a couple of years ago.
