This was a great stop while heading back to TX. We had fried chicken and quite a few sides because we wanted to taste them ALL!!! The chicken is fantastic and checked the box for sure. We had mac & cheese, the greens, mustard potato salad, fried okra, cornbread and some peach and apple cobbler. Both cobblers were delicious and all the sides were as yum as you want your sides to be - I could have just gotten a plate of sides and been happy but.... Only reason for 4 stars is because the cornbread was so disappointing. Everything else was so good so that was a bummer but it's definitely a great stop for some country cooking and if the opportunity comes back up to stop there, we will. Enjoy!! read more

Oh my! That's my impression! Told 15 minutes on a pick up order. We waited 30 figuring they may be busy because it was Friday. We walked in to a woman, (I'm guessing a supervisor), screaming at another worker, a customer complaining that she had been ignored, a barefoot child of one of the workers running around racing his cars on the counter where a customer was trying to pay, and a young man with a head set that, bless his heart, just looked lost. They had zero customers in the restaurant eating but DID have 4 cars at the window. (Plus 3 including us inside waiting for to-go orders). She took our money before telling us it would be ready, "in a little while". It took 45 minutes instead of 15 and the hushpuppies and most of the chicken livers were so overcooked and dry it was not edible. In contrast, the fish was undercooked. What WAS edible waa so bland it had virtually no taste. We wont be going back and have been telling our friends to steer clear. This is a quaint little spot with a great hometown vibe. I'm not sure of the history of Chicken Country, but it served to be a local favorite. I was there about 1:00 and they were quite busy throughout my meal. The chicken was very good. The potato salad was from a food service, but was good. The cole slaw was very good. Customer service was non-existent. I ordered from them daily for a week while renovating my house...and I kept getting soggy chicken because of the green bean juice. Decided to call and ask what I needed to ask for so that my green bean juice didn't ruin my chicken. The gal on the phone lit into me swearing she had packaged it right. So incredibly hateful. I decided to pack up my food and take it back! I was yelled at by the same woman when I asked for a refund, she said I couldn't have one. The catfish is not catfish, it's swai fish. They told me it was real catfish when in fact it is not U.S. farm raised catfish, it is the engineered stuff called swai. Gizzards are the softest I've ever had!!!! I'm more into the chewier ones but if you like soft gizzards this place will not disappoint. Livers were really good too. Moving on to the chicken... I stopped here after church last night because I love testing out new places. Even though they were closing in 15 the waitresses were polite and very helpful. I decided to get the "inferno" wings 6 winglets and a roll for 6.19, and a snack cajun nugget 3.99 for 6 pieces of breast meat cut into chunks with a total cost of 11.30... well...at least it was cooked to order, but was it worth it? Ummm no! I figure I just made a bad choice combinaton of product. But, I'm partial to being served closing food that has been on a steam table all day. The wing portions were spicy and flavorful, the nuggets were heat hot which is always good. I would be remiss to not take into consideration that this is not a major chain therefore the costs will be a bit higher than say...the cartoon character chicken place or event the religious chicken place. We dined in on our first visit. We tried their chicken livers and gizzards, mashed potatoes and brown gravy, fried okra, cabbage, greens, and rolls. Everything was excellent except the greens. The greens were awful. Very sweet, dessert sweet. The inside space is very poorly designed with old, cheap attached booths that are difficult to get in and out of. The area is very crowded without booths marked off for social distancing. Next time, we will get our food to go. The namesake chicken was not wonderful, but just ok. Perfectly cooked, but not juicy without much flavor. The potatoes and gravy were good, but only the brown gravy was freshly made.
