Chicken on the way was a birthday tradition, wed get the birthday person their snack pack and then order a bunch of food on the side. it was a nice little taste of Calgary that we missed when we celebrated away from home. I have been going to "chicken on the way" for years but not the one on Macleod Trail.(I would give them "0" stars if it was an option). Having said that, I had been there once before and I found that other than the corn fritter, which was just an oily ball that I composted, was mostly edible. However, I was feeling like some fried chicken yesterday so I stopped by to order the hungry man's meal with 5 pieces which cost over $18. Do yourself a favour, and check the order before you leave. There is a reason that they wrap it up and secure it with tape. . . . it's so you can't actually see it until you get home. . . .and they can get rid of any dried out chicken or fries. . . . they count on the public not returning the crap that they paid for because it's too far to drive back. Well, that is exactly what happened to me yesterday and I was so upset that I did get back into my car to take it back. The counter person recognized me right away and when I showed her the dried out chicken, she insisted that it was freshly made . . . . 2 of the pieces were wings . . . the size of a robin's wing . . . and totally dried out. I do wish that I had taken a picture but I was so upset that I wasn't thinking straight! These people really have no respect for the public and seem to care about money and nothing else! . . . and on top of that they think that we are stupid and have no eyes . . .we were looking at the same chicken but she tried to tell me that I was not seeing what I was seeing! Anyway, I wanted a refund but of course she didn't even respond to that. . . all she kept saying that the chicken was fresh. I was just getting more and more upset so I left all of it on the counter and walked out! If you want chicken, do yourself a favour and get Mary Brown's or even Kentucky fried. Not much to like about it. The chicken was greasy and flavourless, the white meat extremely dry and the fritters like giant greasy dough-balls. We don't choose fried foods very often but this has cured us for it for a very long time. read more

Ordered an 8 piece family meal. I think the chicken was left over from lunch because it was very dry and greasy. Like they warmed it up in the oil before serving it. The fries being fresh made is great! But, they were VERY salty!! Overall, I don't know if I would recommend or go back. $25 is a lot of money to throw away. read more

My parents used to get Chicken on the Way from the original location in Hillhurst(?), the one with the no-longer-permissible Sambo character painted on the building. I only recall the corn fritters from those days, but stopped by here over the holidays when I decided I wanted some fried chicken and the local KFC was closed. As unhealthy as it no doubt was, the chicken was cooked well, and the portions of french fries were ample. You couldn't eat here every day without dying, but for the occasional treat of fried chicken, I felt there was great value. My favourites are still the corn fritters. read more

While service is always really fast here the food isn't worth it. Every time we go their oil is so old that all the food is almost black and soaked in grease. I could not stand it any longer..."Must have fried chicken". Despite my cardiologist's warning, I turned off of Macleod Trail and headed straight for the little Chicken on the Way storefront. It is a relatively new location and I had to see how they had switched things up from the old 14th Street original which I hadn't entered in years. Upon walking in the door, I looked around to count the differences. OMG...deja vu. Even the cooking oil smelled exactly the same. The yellow boxes are all stacked on the counter, the condiments are laid out in the corner, the corn fritters were still on the menu and the three piece dinner still sounded as inviting as ever. Despite my best effort, I could not resist this latter draw. To round out my trip down memory lane, the server even wrapped my yellow boxed order in brown paper. It is reassuring to know that some things don't change. Everything tasted just as good as it did on my first visit in the 1970's. read more

My buddy had to run an errand at lunch and this was in the same strip mall. I asked him if he'd ever eaten it, he said, "Once. The fries are alright." So I gave it a shot... Snack Pack. Deep fried chicken, deep fried corn cake and fries. It was ok. Let's face it. It's gross food. I feel gross right now after eating it. I threw out half of the fritter because... I couldn't do it to myself. So if you like gross food, like Stampede midway gross, then you will probably like Chicken-on-the-way. Service was fine and fast. Chicken was cooked. The chicken batter was a bit bland but less greasy than KFC. The fries were alright. I won't eat this stuff again unless necessary. read more

So normally I'm pretty happy with this place but my last experience left me with a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth. When I arrived there was a line and they were busy, I'm totally fine with waiting, that's was not a problem for me. So 20 mins go by and we get out food great! But when we got home (20 drive) we realize there is no chicken in our bag just fries and fritters and the sides/fish we ordered. My husband called no answer and back to the car we go to go back another 20 mins to pick up the rest of our order. In the mean time I call again to talk to someone and tell them what happened and that we were on our way. The lady that was working the front swore that we got our chicken and she had given it to us over the phone. When we get there I tell her again we only received half our order and we still were missing the chicken. She then continues to say and start to argue with me that she gave us the chicken. Now if it had been a $2 cheeseburger I would have just said what ever it's 2$ but this was 20$ of food. finally they gave us the chicken reluctantly and we were off.
