The joint is a small Cuban/Puerto Rican restaurant in a local strip mall. You can find Cuban sandwiches, but also some get some PR specials, like Mofongo. The ambiance is strip mall. Service was what I expected from a small family owned Cuban joint. The food is nice. I ordered the Tripleta, which is a Cuban with Cuban Steak added (in addition to the pork and ham). Nicely pressed, great flavor. I also had to get a small mofongo. If you have not had it before, Mofongo is plantains with onions and spices, rolled up into a ball and cooked. It is served with chicken broth, which you will definitely understand should you decide to eat mofongo without it (plantains, unlike bananas, will dry you out). As for the million dollar question? As the saying goes "Don't judge a book by its cover". The location is next door to a laundry mat. The food was great. I ordered the Chicken Caribe and it was great, their grilled onions were A+. The tostones were on point, large, thin, crispy and fresh. Their mayo ketchup and mojo sauce was tasty. Rice and beans were great. I wish I would've taken a picture but the food was too good to wait. I have been waiting to try this place, once I read the June and saw they had several dishes with octopus. So today was the day I would finally try their food. I ordered the Octopus Salad and unsweet tea. The tea was really good, and actually tasted like tea. That is about the only good thing I can say. The octopus was like chewing rubber. It was so over cooked it became impossible to eat. I mentioned it to the waitress, and she said "sorry ". Then she brought me the check for the full amount. I don't mind paying for whatever I order, but $19.24 for a salad that was uneatable and a pretty good ice tea is crazy. What bothers me most is they made no attempt to rectify the problem. This was my first time there, and it surely will be my last. One of the reasons I went was to check it out for our group of 6 that eat out a lot. I just crossed them off our list. read more

Once again let down with Cuban food in Central Florida. This place had really good reviews, but was completely empty when we arrived. We got a Cuban sandwich "extra pressed" and an order of ham croquetas with dip to go. The owner was very friendly, said they make a great authentic Cuban... but... no. It was very far from the hundreds of true Cuban sandwiches I grew up on in Miami. First, there was MAYONNAISE on it.... sigh that Does not belong there, ever. Second, although this was extra pressed it really never got crispy crust- which was disappointing because the bread should have a nice little crack to it when you bite into it. Third the combination of flavors should be roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, yellow mustard. You should be able to taste all of it and it was a very dull flavor no apparent ham, no noticeable Swiss cheese, it may have been in there but I did not dissect my sandwich - but I couldn't taste it nor did I see it peeking out on the sides. The croquetas , were frozen. The same kind of publix uses it in their bakery and certainly OK but nothing special. They were supposed to have been served with some type of dip, but no dip was included in the container. I give them three stars because they were friendly and clean but truthfully it was a very two star experience. read more

My husband and I love this spot! We always go for dinner when we drop our daughter off for gymnastics one plaza over. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the food is the bomb! I've ordered the yuca fries, the Cuban sandwich, empanadas, El Jibarito-which is a roast pork sandwiched between two fried plantains! It's decadent & delicious. Not impressed at all. I was told years ago this was great authentic Cuban food. For someone not from Key West maybe, where I lived three houses down from one of the best Cuban restaurants in South Florida - no way! The fried yuca was decent but the mojo was weird- not good. The beef empanadas were also odd tasting, not good at all. The tamale was frozen food. So were many of the side items, the potato balls and croquettes. Maybe the sweet plantains too. Mofongo was awful but I may not like the dish, so I'm not judging them on it. Disappointing. The chickpea soup was very good with beautiful pieces of pork. The corn fritters were delicious. The guava cheese empanadas were incredible I'm guessing those were frozen too. I despise going to a restaurant and getting served food from the freezer aisle at Publix. If you can't be bothered to actually make your own food why should I be bothered to come to your restaurant? Cuban food in Ocala is dismal. I won't be back. Latin American Cafe is better and they're not especially good either. But Chicken Time (what's up with that name too?) is no esta bien. read more

MOFONGO!!! Not too many places around here serve mofongo but Chicken Time does and they do it right! It lacks a bit on the presentation but I've returned a few times simply for this Puerto Rican delight. I've also enjoyed their media noche, tripleta, and their black beans & yellow rice. Well the latter not so much. They don't use a sofrito & the beans - eh. Then there's their marvelous server Nina. I love her professionalism with a large dose of sweetness. In the South area of Ocala, pretty much in the boonies and looked for the closest lunch spot to go to. Finding Cuban Restaurant Chicken Time only a few miles away was a real Godsend. When I drove up, it was in a very non-descript strip center with none of the normal big name box stores. Okay, I thought, this is either going to be very good or very bad. But the Yelp! reviews were all good? Well, not everyone has the same tastes, but inside we went. My friend ordered the Puerto Rican Sandwich, with a side of rice and beans. He enjoyed the sandwich, but really raved about the beans and rice. I ordered the Caribe Chicken, with two sides (I chose black beans and rice) with a side of Maduro Plantains (sweet). The presentation was awful on the Chicken, the flavor of the marinated chicken and the grilled onions was really tasty. I liked the plantains, but really enjoyed the spices in the rice and beans, really spectacular. And while this is not my number one lunch restaurant in Ocala, I do look forward to coming back and trying some other items on the menu. Atmosphere is more diner than lunch spot and service was good without being too pretentious or too friendly. I am rarely on this side of town, so I may not ever go back but I would not be afraid to if I was in the area. read more

When we find ourselves close to Belleview we seem to always go to Chicken Time Cuban, since it is so good and very reasonable in price. Today was no exception. My wife had Chicken Caribe, grilled marinaded chicken breast with grilled onions, and loved it. I had Puerco Asado, thinly carved roast pork with onions and mojito sauce. I also loved it. First time trying Mofongo and it was a real experience! Service was excellent and small local eatery. Highly recommend. Mofongo may not be for everyone but it was amazing. I ordered mine with fried pork cubes that were tender and very flavorful. The Mofongo is green plantains fried then blended with pork rinds. Served with sauté onions. As a side they serve Cuban mohito sauce (garlic, onion, lime juice and other spices) that is excellent! Great food and great service. Will be back! read more

I had the grilled chicken, yellow rice and black beans. I wasn't impressed. My chicken was WAY over cooked. They put the overlooked side down (as if I wouldn't realize it was so tough that I couldn't even cut it with a knife). The beans tasted like canned. We had the Vaca Frita with white rice and black beans, and the Arroz con Pollo stew with yellow rice and red beans. Portions were on the larger size. The pulled chicken was in a red sauce stew and was very flavorful, as were the red beans. The pulled fried beef was mixed with grilled onions and was SUPER flavor and very tasty. All I have to say is yes, yes, and yes! We stopped by this wonderful family restaurant on our way to Disney and I have to say was a very nice and delicious surprise. The place from the outside does not say much but the food speak for itself. Is a very authentic Puertorrican amd Cuban cuisine. We ordered mofongos, chicken soup and empanadillas. The empanadillas where completely stuffed with well seasoned chicken. The mofongos where so moist and had the Caribbean flavor that we expect. I will definitely recommend this place. read more
