My previous review of this restaurant and grocery is from 2010 and I ate there last night, so it's high time I think for an update. Sadly, it did not measure up to memories nor expectations. The service was prompt and polite but the food--enchiladas to be precise--were bland and the chicken had a funny texture to it as well. The queso dip was alright but a bit runny and just in general nothing was at all exceptional. Certainly a couple notches below La Hacienda's level of authentic tastiness. As for the interior, the restaurant looked like it had not changed in over a decade at all and the tienda, the grocery store portion of the business, was dimly-lit and seemed pretty grimy and disorganized. Again, a far cry from La Hacienda's own tienda and smaller as well. No caramel sauce at all and low on other staples I'd have expected. I did get some panes dulces and they were good however. Like in the restaurant, they are prompt with service at least and if one register is busy a lady will jump on the other one. So at least that impressed me a bit. So in all candor, I cannot really recommend them when La Hacienda is only down the same road--Highway 40--and much better. *** Super sucia, desordenada, lo único rescatable es la buena atención de algunas de sus cajeras. Absolutely spectacular food. Ambience is what you would expect from a typical Mexican restaurant. The only problems that I had was service. Unfortunately I came in for a late lunch which was evidently just in time for their shift change. A woman came up to the table and asked if we were ready to order which we said yes, but nodded and walked away, and she never ended up going back. After a while, we went up to the register and ordered there. While they were all kind and the food was wonderful, I'm afraid I was out of luck when it came to service. I would still go again though. My granddaughter and I had dinner there tonight as we have in the past however tonight our server was nice but left our food in the window where it got cold! The enchiladas had no flavor and we could not finish. We end up going to the store to find something else that we could actually eat. We will not be returning!! I do not recommend. read more

This place has the most authentic Mexican food I've had in Florida. The staff were super friendly, kind, and gracious. There food was amazing all of the tortillas and chips are made in house! We were at WEC for a horse show and ended up going twice in the same weekend. It is definitely one of my spots and go to's when traveling through Ocala. read more

Trash! The food here is horrible, the chips were very hard, the asada tacos were nothing but fat, and my cheese enchilada was a corn tortilla with unmelted slice cheese and ranchero sauce. They claim to authentic but Taco Bell is more authentic than Pepe's. Truly sad!!! read more

My new favorite Mexican Restaurant in Ocala! Took my granddaughter there last week, and was so pleased with almost everything! The servers very friendly and helpful, the menu extensive and food delicious! My only disappointment was the chips, I like them thin and crispy, these were the thicker style, good, fresh, just not my style! I had the chicken taco salad. The chicken was plentiful and wonderfully spiced and grilled. It had a yummy scoop of guacamole on it, fresh lettuce and the shell was not had and thick like many, but thin and crisp. Granddaughter had a steak chimichanga , there was so much steak, again well spiced and cooked, and came with rice and beans! We both really enjoyed our lunch. Pepe's also has an extensive Mexican market, lots or the spices, fresh bakery products, condiments, meats.... Will definitely return to shop soon. read more

The burrito was fantastic, really well seasoned and an incredible portion size for the price. I knew it didn't come with sauce so I added queso thinking it'd be a cheese sauce but instead they just gave me slices of cheese? The maduros were good even though they were overcooked and the flan was a bit more eggy with a bite to it instead of a smooth custard (probably over cooked as well). Ok so this place blew my mind. It's out in the middle of nowhere and when u pull in your a little confused thinking your walking into a grocery store but dam don't let that fool u. Just make your way over to where the good smell is coming from the kitchen and have a seat in one of the few tables and a sweet lady will swoop in and take your order. I haven't had a tamale in years so I for sure wanted one of them & I ended up ordering the enchilada supreme with double rice. The food here is for sure authentic and BLOWS the chain restaurants out of the park. I'm still shocked to how good the food was but if your wanting some good mexican I highly recommend this location. I'm pretty sure it's all ran by one family. The bakery looked nice and clean as well as all the breads and pastry's they have for sale . Went to Pepe's for the first time in 5-6 years. It looked identical to the first time I visited but well kept and smelled clean and yummy. We sat ourselves in a booth near the wall and were greeted immediately. Our waitress was very friendly and spoke English for me as my husband could converse in Spanish but I'm not as well practiced. She brought out fresh warm chips and salsa asap. The chips were slightly over done but still tasty. We order queso dip, the pepe's taco platter with steak, and the quesadilla gigante with steak. The food came out hot and quick. No complaints about the food, it all tasted fresh and great. Nice portion sizes. My husband's beans were a little runnier than he likes but they weren't terrible. Overall you cannot beat the prices here and the service was friendly and quick. We will be back :) read more

What a surprise! Who knew that inside a Mexican supermarket, this little gem is hiding. If you want real authentic Mexican, this is the place for you. They give you complimentary chips and salsa. The chips are freshly fried there on site. Then we ordered queso, sopes al pastor, tacos, and combo #4 which has a tamal, chile relleno, and enchilada. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS! You have to make sure to ask for the two house sauces. There is a green one and a red one. Both are so good. The red one is the spicy one. These sauces totally bring out all the flavors in the food. The ambiance not so much, the waittress & owner or their mother not so much. Bottom line yes I was stuffed my l lengua taco was ok, my wife chimichanga was ok, beans were mush & rice was way to salty.the salsa just so so & burnt chips. This place is amazing! They make the corn tortillas onsite. They also use them to make the warm tortilla chips they give you with salsa. They are addicting. They also have a squeeze bottle of tomatillos salsa and a red chile salsa with spice. I ordered combo #3- enchilada, sope, and taco with rice and beans. Each item you pick the meat you want (tongue, cheek, pork, steak, chickens, fish) I had steak(awesome seasoning) and the pork( not exciting). The taco is topped with cilantro and onion. The enchilada has white cheese and steak in middle....no sauce. Sope has received bean and choice of meat on top. The beans on the side are topped with cotija cheese. Very tasty beans. All of that for less than $9!!!! My friends and Flautas and a horchata to drink. Service was great. Parking is free in the front lot. This is also a grocery store- butcher, produce, Bakery, canned food. Many types of tortillas too! I would definitely go again. read more

Loved this little restaurant at the back of a Mexican grocery store. Just finding it seemed to have a real cool "live like the locals" feel. But thanks to Yelp, finding it was easy. The decor can only be described as "Dineresque" (I just copyrighted that word and reserved the URL) but in a very good way. The restaurant was clean and no dirty dishes or garbage even though I came at the tail end of the busy lunch hour. The hostess/waitress very friendly and I quickly sat down and scanned the menu. Okay, it is a big menu, so many choices and so......you understand. I finally settled on the Suizo Burritto and a guacamole side. In the meantime I munched on chips and delicious homemade salsa. When the Burritto came I realized the chips, salsa and guacamole were all overkill because the Burritto was huge, tasty and to my liking. Really a wonderful lunch. The restaurant is actually at the rear of a grocery store, so don't feel out off if you don't see it at first. In fact, I had to ask where it was when I first stepped in the door. While this place may look like a place where they filmed El Camino, I promise you that inside is a fantastic restaurant AND store for all foods and things latin american! The water is pretty good, only really needing some nicer cups. All restaurants reading this, please stop using soda-brand cups for your water. It's a bad look, honestly. The store section is great and I was able to purchase some things for a birthday party, so thanks, Pepe!
