First of all, the entrance to drive there was awful. The ground would get muddy and wet when it rained, and it would create huge floods to drive through. It would also have a lot of hidden stuff, like nails, which caused my mother's car to get a flat tire because they never checked the entrance at all. So if you do drive there, be extremely careful. Second, all the people in charge were classist and rude. If you were rich with money, they'd make sure you were given free food, a horse to ride, and lots of other benefits. They would provide free meals and treats all the time for them only; however, those who didn't have money like that didn't get to enjoy the same privileges unless one felt generous in the moment and offered us scraps. If you weren't rich, they would look down upon you and ignore you, even mistreat you if they wanted to, for absolutely no reason. They would only tell us all to "get back to work" if they caught us stopping to watch them while they ate all their free treats and meals in a huddled group like pigs. Third, speaking of mistreatment, they got very jealous of anyone that had experience in taking care of horses (like me), and they often took out their anger on them because apparently having experience and knowledge in the area, and going above and beyond to help care for the horses, correlated to "going against the rules and causing trouble". They would yell and shout at you, even downright insult and degrade you, which is terrible. Nobody should ever go through any of this at an animal rescue and sanctuary, and I didn't appreciate the mistreatment and inequality that I saw. I left because of all of that, and don't recommend it. At all. I love horses and love caring for them, but this place is not a place to make "friends" unless you're rich with money. Take my advice and go find another sanctuary to volunteer at to care for rescued horses. They might deny what I said, but believe me when I say they're not good people at all. Edit: While I don't remember who did it and whether it was a regular volunteer, a sponsor, or someone who owns the place, I remember that a person harshly and intentionally slapped the face of a horse that innocently turned its head towards him while he was caring for it. Not okay in any way or form, and it makes me wonder if other animals are getting abused in any way or form without anyone knowing. Second edit: Second edit: Now I remember, it was the sponsors they treated better because they had money compared to the regular volunteers. I forgot for a moment what they were called but now do.

The baby bunnies are my favorite, and the ferrets, and the GOATs (Greatest Of All Time) are silly, sweet, and very friendly. Everything is set at a great fair price, not too expensive. All I know is I felt like I was at my cousin's house and they happened to have animals. There were no directions or explanations...until it came time to pay. Now that part was explained perfectly. Honestly, I probably could have seen the same thing at my local shelter and saved $30. I'm hoping the money goes toward helping the animals, but it's really hard to tell. They have goats, plenty of birds, llamas, pigs, and horses. I wouldn't call it a true petting zoo because most of the petting is done through a gate. If you want a horse ride, you have to ask. No one offers or tells you about it. Everything looked like it could use some updating or repairs, and the overall vibe from most of the staff was, "Please hurry up so we can get back to what we were doing." A couple of employees were pleasant and helpful, but they weren't going above and beyond. They simply gave us what we asked for. Overall, I probably won't be back. At least my $30 went toward helping the animals...I hope.

Like many women's clubs in Florida, the Hollywood Women's Club was founded in 1922 during the Florida Land Boom years. In the 1920's women's clubs were formed to give back to the community. They became a way for women to get out of the house and assert their independence. They allowed women to get involved in politics and launched the women's rights movement. The Hollywood Women's Club predated the founding of the city and in 1924 they joined the General Federation of Women's Clubs. The first club members were the wives of officers in the J.W. Young Organization which was the development company building Hollywood. They met in the first clubhouse that was built on land donated by the founder of Hollywood, Joseph W. Young in 1927. Early club projects included donating hundreds of books to the first public library, holding tag sales to pay for health screenings for children, giving migrating farmers assistance with housing and welfare, getting the Miami Telephone Co. to bring the first telephone line to town, and collecting $12,000 during a war bonds drive. Today the club supports literacy programs, funds a youth scholarship, participates in the Hollywood Historical Society, supports the neighborhood crime watch, and provides financial aid to many state charities through the General Federation of Women's Clubs. The original plans for the clubhouse included an ornate Mediterranean Revival style. After the collapse of the land boom due to the Great Depression and several hurricanes the design was scaled back to a more affordable $25,000 Classical Revival style building in 1927. The building was listed as a a local historical landmark in 1985, and added to the National Register of Historic Place in 1995. Between 2012 and 2014 money was raised by the club and added to a grant to prevent the clubhouse from sinking into the sand. Other cosmetic work was also completed on this charming historical building. In 2022 the Hollywood Women's Club celebrated their 100th anniversary. During this time further electrical improvements and upgrades to the kitchen were made. Today the clubhouse is available to be rented for private events. The 1,200 square foot main event room has hardwood floors and a grand piano and can accommodate 60 people. There is also a catering kitchen. Information on how to rent the clubhouse and join and volunteer with this important civic organization can be found on the club website. If there are any upcoming events you can find that information as well. For instance they hold 2 round bingo nights for $10. The next bingo night is May 30th and they serve inexpensive drinks including alcohol and snacks. For over 100 years the women of Hollywood have been coming together to improve their local community as well as the state of Florida. Women's clubs have a legacy of helping their communities and it's nice to see that this one is still going strong today.
