The US Government formally established the Hypoluxo Post Office in 1886 and hired Garnett as postmaster. Garnett was also a barefoot mailman. The barefoot mailmen were US postal workers who delivered the mail in South Florida from 1885 to 1893 by walking barefoot on the beach from Palm Beach to Miami. Before the mailman started the route, a letter from Lake Worth to Miami could take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to arrive and would be routed through Cuba. The annual salary of a Barefoot Mailman was $600 a year. The trip started on Monday and took three days to get to Miami, Then they would turn around and come back for a round trip of 136 miles. Eighty miles were walking and fifty six miles were by boat. Barefoot mailman James "Ed" Hamiliton mysteriously vanished in 1897 while crossing the Hillsboro Inlet. After he disappeared Garnett took over the route until a rail line was established in 1893 connecting Lantana and Lemon City. The post office continued operating until 1954. Charming Garnett Park has benches, trees, landscaping, a bench swing, picnic tables, and public art, "Sail into the Future" by sculptor Frank Varga. The sculpture moves with the wind to inspire new thoughts. The Palm Beach County Library System will be opening a Hypoluxo Branch next to Garnett Park. The park will be the perfect place to enjoy a book outside. The train tracks are directly across the street and while I was sitting in the park the Brightline roared past.

Hypoluxo Island is a tightknit community of less than 300 families on an island on the south end of the Intracoastal waterway. It is prized for its lush landscaping and luxury homes along the waterfront. This neighborhood park was dedicated in 1975 in honor of Floyd Charles McKinley "in appreciation of his dauntless devotion towards the goal of making Lantana a better place to live." Park amenities include a paved walking path, benches, and playground equipment. Although there is not a dedicated parking lot you can park on the the side of the road. This is a great park for letting your dog run, taking the kids to play, or just relaxing on a bench for a spell as I did.

This is a small city park for the residents of the Hypoluxo Island neighborhood. It's in the middle…read moreof of the road and can be driven around. As the plaque states, it was dedicated in 1975. But considering its age, it is very well maintained. The large open grassy area with some trees is manicured and neat. In addition to the walking path, there is some playground equipment and a swing set. Other than that, there's not much else in this "passive" park. When we came here, there was one older lady walking her dog in the park. Otherwise, it was empty. The park is open during daylight hours -- sunrise to sundown. It's a pretty little local bit of greenery, but you would not make a special trip to come here unless you lived nearby.

Jewell Cove Natural Area is located across the street from the Lake Worth Municipal Park. It is…read morejust South of the Lake Ave. Bridge along Ocean Ave. on the east side of the Lake Worth Lagoon. This natural area is a maritime hammock which is a natural band of forest that grows on the stabilized back dunes of barrier islands. This natural area is 11.4 acres with 1,200 feet of shoreline on the Lake Worth Lagoon. In February 1967 this land was leased for 99 years to the Milton Steinhardt family. In 2012, Judge Raphael Steinhardt, grandson of Milton Steinhardt relinquished the lease so that the land could be donated to the City of Lake Worth to be enjoyed by the public. This parcel has now been turned into a nature preserve, nine acres of which are submerged so that mangroves and sea grasses can grow. A maritime hammock community makes up another 2 and 1/2 acres. In 2015 and 2016 volunteers removed exotic plants. Fifteen truckloads were removed along with concrete material that had been dumped to prevent erosion. Three thousands tons of limestone were then installed to create a breakwater that prevents erosion and creates a habitat for oysters which filter the water. Clean sand was added and sea grass and mangroves were planted. The mangroves also filter out pollutants and acts as a marine life nursery. The marsh grass breaks up wave energy and provides a wildlife habitat. The Jewell Cove Natural Area serves as a refuge to the animals of the Lake Worth lagoon. This includes osprey, tricolored heron. snowy egret, little blue heron, and white ibis. Plants found here include coralbean, cabbage palm, sea grape, strangler fig, sand cordgrass, green buttonwood, and mangroves. There is a hiking trail through the preserve and you can launch a kayak on the Lake Worth Lagoon but the main benefit of this preserve is to improve the health of the Lake Worth Lagoon ecosystem. In 2019, the commission voted to put on the ballot a 99-year lease on Jewel Cove's 11.4 acres submerged along the Intracoastal and to keep the land on the southeast side of the bridge a natural area. This ensures that the area stays a natural living shoreline, protected by Palm Beach County. The county will not be able to build on the land and it will be maintained as a sanctuary.

This is a cute park in the Historic College Park District of Lake Worth. It is on the south side of…read morea canal that separates West Palm Beach and Lake Worth. The park was built in 1987 by the South Florida Water Management District which owns it. It has long been a popular place to fish for snook where the water flows through the spillway gates. In 2011 grills, picnic tables, and a path were added to the park. Funds for the project were raised by the neighborhood and from a partnership with the Lake Worth Public Services Department. In 2017 The South Florida Water Management District added a new fence to make it safer to fish. In addition to fishing there is a large lawn that seems popular with people looking to exercise their dogs. The water attracts a lot of birds and lizards make it a nice place to nature watch and take photos.

Such a beautiful park with a lot packed into a small place. Beautiful playground, half basketball…read morecourt, updated and well kept exercise equipment and a bocce ball court. They have challenging playground equipment for all ages. The only reason for four stars instead of five is that there is not an accessible public restroom within a short distance for toddlers with small bladders ( or parents for that matter).

Kagan Park is a nicely maintained community park in Juno Beach. There is free parking in the lot…read moreadjacent to the park. A marker in the park states that it was named after Stanley W. Kagan, mayor of Juno Beach from 1954 to 1969. Originally from New Jersey, he moved to Juno Beach in 1949 where he worked as a repeal estate developer. Stanley Kagan passed away in 1975. The park is landscaped with trees and an open play space. Amenities at Kagan Park include a children's play structure, half basketball court, exercise equipment, and picnic tables. Across the street is Pelican Lake which has a walking path and gazebo. During my visit the park was busy with people playing basketball and kids climbing on the playground. The park is open everyday from sun up to sun down. Come out for exercise and play.

Heading to lunch and our trip brought us past this park that we had to check out…read more A nice park that is very well maintained and enjoyed by families. We saw a couple of families enjoying the water works set up in one part where the children were enjoying the water and parents watching comfortably from their benches. Restroom facilities are available as well as other playground equipment on the other side of the facilities. Lots of parking available and a large field for other activities.

This park is located on the corner of Parker Avenue and Hampton Road. We took Parker Avenue to our…read morelunch restaurant. One of my husband's grandsons is named Parker so we were curious and took the road north instead of heading to US1. The park is right north/next to the Riker Athletic Campus -- part of the Palm Beach Atlantic College (not FAU). And I don't think most of the families using this park even question how it was named or care. You can google or go to Wikipedia for this information. When we stopped by everything was so vibrantly green -- including a large grassy "sports" area where two guys were practicing their soccer kicks. The park has many amenities -- both a bike and walking path (paved), a children's playground, toilet facilities and a water fountain. The most appealing area to me was the splash pad. There were some interesting trees with a bit of shade. I especially liked that there were picnic tables and benches throughout so parents could watch their kids. The park is open sunrise to sunset. Glad we stopped to check it out.

Currie Park is named in honor of George Graham Currie a Palm Beach Renaissance man. Mr. Currie was…read moreborn near Montreal in 1867. In 1895 he was in New York and wanted to get to Cuba to report on an insurgence. On the way he ended up broke and stranded in West Palm Beach. He started out working as a typist and living in a rooming house. From there he earned a law degree and made a fortune developing real estate. He served s mayor from 1901 to 1904. He went on to write 18 books of poetry, music lyrics, and essays and had a regular column in the Palm Beach Post. At the age of 59 he died of a heart attack on September5, 1926. Currie Park was dedicated in 1949. Currie Park is 13 and a half acres along the Intracoastal near the Northwood neighborhood. The park has tennis courts, fishing piers, a playground, a boat ramp. A maritime museum, and a memorial to the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. The park also has a large green space where the city holds free concerts during the winter months of the third Sunday of the month from 4 to 7 PM. I got to enjoy the concert they had this past Sunday, the R&B Derek Mack Band. Although this park has a lot of great amenities the best one has to be the view. This linear park offers a stunning view of the water and it is the perfect place to lay back and watch the boats sail by. Currently there are plans to build a tower next to the park and the developer has plans to make improvements to the park. Only time will tell what the future of Currie Park will be but it is just about perfect the way it is.

This park used to be named Royal Palm Park. It had it's named changed in 1990 to honor George…read morePetty, a Palm Beach resident and Canadian paper magnate. Some residents weren't too happy to have a park named after someone they considered an outsider. Petty used $750,000 of his money to start the Good Neighbor Council, a group that focused on fighting noise from the airport. The park is a strip of land in the historic 1920's Prospect Park neighborhood that runs from Washington Ave to the Intracoastal. This park used to sit directly under the flight path of planes traveling to and from West Palm Beach Airport. As a result take offs and landings were fanned over the city instead of concentrated over this one neighborhood. This park does not have a parking lot, you have to park on the street, It does have a small playground and benches but it's best amenity is the view of the Intracoastal. You can see Mar-a-Lago is across from the park along with other Palm Beach mansions. The houses in this neighborhood aren't too shabby either. The neighborhood is a cool place to admire 1920's architecture and the park gives a great view of the water.

So I guess they tore the playground down?!?!? There better be plans to rebuild it! Wtfread more
