To order tacos at Chilo's, you have to first order inside at the bar. There's a nice outdoor space out back by the food truck (structure?) where they actually make the food and you can sit. On a nice warm day, I imagine it's a great space and given that there weren't a ton of customers when I went, my food came out fairly quickly. I got three tacos (carnitas, fish, and chicken in that order). The first thing I noticed was that the tacos felt quite small for being ~$17 total. The fish taco was my favorite amongst the three that I got. The chicken taco unfortunately was quite bland and felt underseasoned (and this is coming from someone who often underseasons their food ). My roommate found this incredible restaurant near our place. It was so yummy! I ordered an Avocado Torta. It was packed with delicious flavors and was filled with vibrant colors. It was absolutely filling and paired well with their green sauce. The service was incredible and quick. They had a small, yet mighty menu. I can't wait to try other menu items. I think I had a roasted beef taco and vegetarian taco (Corn Truffle, Roasted Poblano Pepper, Queso Oaxaca, Queso Fresco, Crema). My friend also had beef, fish (catfish) and something else, possibly pork for the third. My favorite of the two had to be the beef! It's cool that they have a vegetarian and vegan (cactus) menu options too. The margaritas did the trick. We ate outside and were among the last to leave. You also order & pickup the food outside. We spent some time inside after they packed up the outdoor tables & chairs. The bartender was cool and bar was cozy but spacious enough if you decide to eat or hang out inside. However being that it was September, it felt so nice outdoors so I'm glad we did the patio option. Also with me being an out-of-towner the rat sightings (yes, multiple) near the garbage (also coming near our high top tables) was a bit off-putting, but it seems to be a normal occurrence for New Yorkers who live there. It's a casual Mexican restaurant and bar that can be a little on the expensive side--but let's be real, restaurants have been put in a shitty situation so just have your drinks and smile. They have a back patio with lots of seating, as well as picnic tables and high tops on the sidewalk. You'll order inside (mask required), they'll hand you a number, and they'll deliver to your table. At one point, one of the employees misunderstood my order but they immediately corrected it, and politely. Despite clearly being understaffed, everything came out super quickly and the employees were kind. Chilo's is my kind of bar. They serve affordable drinks. Donate some of the proceeds to social justice issues and slang damn good tacos out of refashioned taco truck in the back yard. The inside is fairly small. Maybe seating for 20. 40 standing up. There is a solid selections of rums, tequilas, whiskeys, and gins. Their house cocktails are written on the mirrors behind the bar. There are menus inside but you have to walk out back to get your own tacos, enchiladas, or burritos. The tacos reminded me of cali tacos because of the size of the tortillas and all the pickled topping options. Service was pretty quick. It was somewhat difficult to get back inside with a paper plate full of tacos and another handful of sauces. Tortillas may be small but they pack them with meat. After eating 3 tacos there was enough meat that had fallen off my plate that I could have filled another taco. I got the happy hour special which is 3 tacos and a tecate for $10. Been here consistently for a couple of years now. The vibe is always on point. Food is great and menu changes from time to time, allowing for new changes without completely revamping the offerings and getting rid of old favorites. Has been a hideaway spot for sports, dates, and meet ups with friends. Especially great during the spring and summer thanks to the outdoor space, though I've seen heaters make their way into that space lately and it's been pretty cozy during the winters lately when the weather wasn't too extreme. Bartenders are super friendly and helpful. Don't remember waiting more than a minute for someone to check in on my drink order and never had to ask more than once for a drink. Omg this place is a gem. I rarely come to Clinton Hill but this was worth the trip. The tacos are a bit pricy. They start at $5 but they are pretty overstuffed so two was very filling for me. I had never heard of Conchinita before and just WOW on the flavor explosion in your mouth. It's almost got an Indian masala sauce vibe to it. It's phenomenal. And of course, I always have to get a carnitas. The hot sauces are super spicy so maybe go down one notch from what you normally can handle. And for $10 you can get a huge tecate and a Tequila shot. It was rather cold outside so if that's not your thing they had a pretty efficient takeout system in place for Covid safety. Such a unique and fun eatery hiding in Clinton Hill -- a permanent food truck patio! Went with my sister on a Friday night and there was only a teeny corner of a bar counter to stand at. There are a good amount of picnic tables, but it's a really teeny space. One of the few bummers of this awesome place. I had two carnitas tacos and my sister had two chicken tacos ($4 each). Both were delicious, fresh, and dripping in sauce. Yuuum! Two was plenty for each of us and we couldn't even eat all of our chips and salsa! We passed on the drinks this time but they have a great selection (frozen margs!!!) that I will definitely check out next time. Updating my review... during COVID, I've actually found their food to be much improved than before COVID. I highly recommend the cochinita and al pastor tacos. Both packed full of flavor and the perfect amount of spice. The torta is also so good. I had previously disliked the chicken taco, which I haven't had in a couple of years, so I can't speak for that but I'd say skip it and get something a bit more interesting. I do think everything is slightly overpriced (this was my opinion before COVID) but in this time, I'm happy to give a local business money and I honestly don't blame them. The employees are all very kind and friendly. The employees wear masks, they have lots of sanitizer, enforce social distancing, and have lots of outdoor seating. I love Chilo's! My favorite spot for tacos besides Los Tacos No. 1. Their happy hour deal (3 tacos and a Tecate for $12) is amazing, but I find the tacos and drinks here to be well-priced in general, as the tacos are PACKED. Your hands/face will definitely get messy when you eat here. Most recently, I got the huitlacoche, carnitas, and cochinita pibil tacos, and split the chips and (homemade!) salsa with my boyfriend. I was very, very impressed by their huitlacoche taco, which I became obsessed with in Mexico City, and which is really hard to find in New York! I also really liked the carnitas -- the cochinita pibil was a little too meaty for me, so I'll have to try another topping next time. I also love the drinks here -- they had a frozen cucumber caipirinha on special when I was here this weekend, and I was a little skeptical while ordering (caipirinhas are a drink with both a tall ceiling and low, undrinkable floor), but it was incredible! The bartender though... unprofessional, unhappy, and does not know recipes. I wish I could've given this place five stars but the bar experience was horrible. I had the nopales taco, which is basically a taco with cactus. CACTUS! I've never had anything quite like it before. The taco truck man described it pretty well--it tasted just like green beans but a little crunchier and the sauces and toppings were super yummy. Love the taco truck, disliked the bar. It seemed cool but the service seemed lacking. Based on the other reviews (and my roommate who's been there a few times), the bartenders are the worst. Not that friendly and very slow. I miss this place so much! I was here early in the year and haven't done a review. This pandemic got me miss visiting some of these good spots. I love the vibe of this restaurant. Taco truck outside and a bar inside. The area where the taco truck is has a lot of bench-style seating and tables. Spacious and also warm because there are heaters all over the area. It is great! I enjoyed the time we hung out here. It was also not crowded at the time. Their tacos here are so amazing! I've tried their carnitas, chorizo, smoked beef, and fish!
