I've been trying to go to Sunken Harbor for over a year now. I don't know how it's possible but despite being local it always seems to have a private event whenever we have plans to go. The stars finally aligned this winter and I had the opportunity to try it out. The vibes are perfect. Fog and bubbles, sea noises and all of the art go together seemlessly. Drinks were great. We had three and left suitably sloshed for the night with no aftereffects. We didn't have too many bites but the food was very good for a bar. This is a "speakeasy" above Gage and Tollner. An undersea Tiki style adventure with a sexy mermaid heading up the bar. Nautical theme throughout with weathered leather, ropes, fish. Cocktails are made with various types of rum and ingredients like grapefruit, maraschino, wormwood amaro, falernum, thyme, Assam tea, spiced lime, allspice, coconut, cucumber, nutmeg, sour orange. All the drinks keep with the tropical, fruity taste with a hint of spice. They are also broken up into categories (dry land = no alcohol, shallows = average amount of alcohol, and abyss (larger amounts of alcohol). The abyss section has some cocktails that are limited to two per customer. They have some bar bites like fried green tomatoes, shrimp toast, broiled oysters, ricotta, dumplings, sliders. I had the French fries with kimchi ranch, which were underwhelming. Bartenders were cool and kept the drinks coming. I'm so glad I finally made it to Sunken Harbor Club! The speakeasy entrance, whimsical décor, and cozy space make it feel like a fun clubhouse. Their drink menu is extensive with lots of rum, mezcal and vodka cocktail options. I had the Mai Tai made with 3 rums, almond, orange and mint. It was beyond delicious. I enjoyed the interactive touches throughout the night like when the room filled with bubbles during last call for happy hour. And the announcements of fiery drinks like El Diablo. We had an amazing experience here! This is speakeasy style bar that is part of the Gage and Tollner restaurant. So walk into the restaurant first and then ask for Sunken Harbor Club. It is a small spot and so worth the wait. Our hotel was in walking distance so we didn't mind being put on the waitlist. We got there too late for food so I can only speak about the drinks but they were wonderful! I am not the rum nerd, my husband is but he enjoyed himself and had great conversations with the bartenders. I love the Sunken Harbor Club. It's a mermaid-pirate-treasure-tiki-lit-sunken-ultimate-fantasy speakeasy bar hidden above an amazing steak restaurant to boot. Need I say more??? Everything here is excellent from the cocktails to the nibbles to the amazing decor and sound effects. I mean they literally play ambiance music to make you feel like you're underwater along with creaking noises for added piratey ship emphasis. They also have random storms with thunder and lightening effects as well to make you really feel at sea! If you stay till last call, they turn the back wall red ("red the mermaid!") and ring the bell. It truly is a fun experience. The drink menu is basically separated by level of potency which is great if you know if you want something light and refreshing versus dark and boozy forward. Drinks from "In the Shallows" will feature your lighter drinks as compared to the stronger drinks in "The Abyss", whereas you guessed, you will sink into it! This is a tropical bar so they have a lot of rum focused drinks plus rum tastings if you are interested. PLEASE order the El Diablo and don't be afraid when everyone else screams EL DIABLO when it is presented to you. Shoutout to Garret, my favorite bartender. I was about to give a 5 star review until I saw my credit card charge. I got overcharged an amount that's not significant to do a chargeback but it left a bad taste. I will edit this review if the owner reaches out to me to rectify this situation. This is a "underwater" speakeasy located on the second floor, above Gage & Tollner. Walk in only but I went at opening 5pm on a Monday and it was not busy. I seated myself at the bar and ordered the $15 cocktail happy hour special (Mary Pickford) which is a fairly strong drink. It is served in a regular cup despite being a tiki bar, and I surveyed the selection of liquors and cups in the bar and the bartender confirmed pretty much all the cocktails now no longer are served in the tiki cup except for the barrel one. This kind of defeated the purpose of a tiki bar with fun cups and ambience, but okay. The drink was still delicious and strong. This makes for a good bar hopping bar since service is fast and efficient and the drinks are at good prices (specifically happy hour). I do hear it gets quite busy weekends so I'd recommend a weekday visit if you do go. read more

Sunken Harbor Club is a good time to look at. I liked the moody lighting, the fog curling around the banquettes, and the shipwreck theming, but the whole thing felt kitschier than it seemed to think it was. I kept giggling as I thought of I Think You Should Leave's shtick on "Club Haunted House" and "Club Aqua." Fun as a bit, less persuasive when played straight. The drinks were the inverse of what I expect from an Attaboy or Death & Co-style build, where the glass is unassuming and the palate unfolds in layers. Here the spectacle leads. Gigantic vessels, umbrellas and wild straws, towering garnish assemblies, and ice that looks and tastes machine-made. Inside the glass the flavors skew blunt: strong, a little sweet, short on mid-palate detail, with base spirits that drink like well rather than carefully chosen anchors. Nothing asked to be sipped contemplatively. Everything asked to be photographed. If you want fog, flair, and a themed night out with friends, there is novelty here and the staff keep the show moving. Once we were in, we saw the reason why the wait was so long as the place is pretty small, but the vibes are really tiki.. it felt like I was traveling into SpongeBob bikini bottom. It was really fun and the drinks had a different level going as far down as to the abyss, which means you want to get hammered.. if you're willing to wait a long wait, you could always enjoy a drink at the other restaurant below it and it will be worth it once you make it into the bar. read more

It was 2 hour wait! Bit worked out great since our table was ready after we ate. The menu is separated into three different categories based on how strong the drinks are. For those who like tasty drinks that are not booze forward I recommend In the Shallows and the Twilight Zone. Loved most of the drinks we tried: Star cycle: light and refreshing Hachiko Highball: good ginger taste Batida Dourada: 10/10! We arrived around 4 and took advantage of downstairs Gage and Tollner's Teeny 'Tini $10 martini happy hour before lining up. It is a cozy and intimate space, well decorated to its nautical theme. They have happy hour and a small bites menu. We enjoyed several cocktails; Brain Fog, Zombie Punch, Mai Tai, and The Multiverse. Each was visually appealing with flowers, garnishes, and specific cups for each. The drinks really do very in strength based on what the menu says (Shallows - least boozy, The Abyss - most boozy). Sunken harbor hosted one of the best bar experiences I have ever had. Upon entry, you are transported to the abyss inside a shipwreck. But, spirits are high in this ship wrecked community as innovative and funky elixirs are being cooked up with precision and class. I snagged a spot at the bar and had the wonderful opportunity to exchange words with Shannan and Garrett. Their knowledge was insane. I am a home bar tender so any wisdom they were willing to impart was greatly appreciated. I started with a brain fog. Woo, was my brain foggy. Beautifully crafted and garnished it sent me straight the islands. Balanced with tart, sweet, and herbal. Slightly funky, yet ever so smooth. An amazing cocktail. But, my favorite was the comeback special. The beer nut garnish took this drink to another dimension. Every sip the aromatics of the beer nuts complimented the peanut butter whiskey and banana. Slightly tropical, ever so savory. After 1 drink of this cocktail I immediately texted my partner and told her the comeback special is a top 5 cocktail I have ever had. Yes, it was that good. One of the best bars in terms of drink and experience. I even purchased garrett's book while there and am excited to read. I was thumbing through it while sipping and garrett is a mastermind. Very fun Tiki Bar located above Gage and Tollner. The entrance to the bar is through the restaurant below. We arrived later on a Tuesday night and were seated immediately. Seemed like we were lucky to get a spot quickly as the bar was full nearly the entire time. Looks like they're on Resy, so a reservation would be prudent if you're set on coming. Atmosphere is pretty silly as expected. Decorations make it appear that you're on a sunken ship. It's dimly light aside from the occasional time that someone orders the Diablo cocktail at which point the bar lights up in red and everybody screams. It's loud. Folks are drinking and definitely having a good time. Once during the evening, dry ice smoke was released creating a mystifying foggy haze. It's an all around good spirited experience. We shared a couple cocktails - the Rhyme on the Ancient Mariner and the Mai Tai. Both were balanced rum based drinks. They were generously garnished with what seemed like a bushel of mint. My biggest complaint of the evening was the drinks were served in glass instead of tiki mugs. The menu is organized into light, balanced, and boozy sections helping you course your evening appropriately. Service was attentive and informative. I've been here several times and have enjoyed each visit but of course it when my best friend takes 3 trains to get here after MONTHS on trying to coordinate finally is able to go that i have an awkward and not really great experience. Be aware THERES A TIME LIMIT ON SEATING. This was not something I had ever been aware of until our server rudely put the bill on the table when we not finished. I had to work to flag him down to ask why we got the bill and if there's a time limit on seating. After four separate visits to this establishment I learned that for the first time. Overall the visit was great but that server Tommy tainted the experience. It's taken me quite some time to visit Sunken Harbor as location is not ideal for me but happy to finally have paid a visit! As a Queens native, Sunken harbor is basically on the other side of the world in addition to it being in a semi shady area of Brooklyn once it gets dark. All in all Sunken Harbor is a wonderful hidden cocktail bar upstairs from Gage and Tollner (which I definitely want to go back to check out). Decor is on point with the nautical theme and super cute as a great date spot. Drinks were obviously on the pricy side, but if you are looking to impress a date with deliciously tasting superb cocktails + cozy vibes, this is the place to go! Staff were super friendly and we did not feel rushed at all (we did show up on a random Tuesday evening). Do yourself a favor and order the dessert (miso butterscotch pudding), its simply divine. Beware(!) Even though located in Brooklyn, you'll be looking at 100% prime NYC cocktail prices (think ~$20 a drink) Sunken Harbor is also relatively small (max seating maybe ~30) so I would not be surprised at wait times during busy hours. read more

Sunken Harbor Club is a tiki bar hidden above the Gage and Tollner restaurant. I loved walking into this pirate ship themed speakeasy complete with a glassed mermaid mural behind the bar. The menu complements the decor of the place. The drinks are explained on the menu in a storybook type fashion. We enjoyed the well curated drinks that were presented wonderfully. I have been here twice now and did not experience any of the snobbish atitude that some of the reviews are talking about. When I sat at a table my server wasn't overly friendly like people for whatever reason expect servers to be, but he was efficient and nice and I didn't feel unwelcome. I don't need someone to kiss my *ss just because they work in the service industry. The bartenders from the second time I visited though were a joy to be around and the host who was at the door was super fun and made my night with his kindness. The decor feels like Trader Sam's Grotto in disney world which for some people might be a deterrent, but I personally don't mind a bit of whimsy. I suspect that the real snobs aren't the people who work here but rather the people who expect to walk into a bar and be treated like Ariel and Prince Eric, but what do I know? This place is a VIBE!! If you're planning on coming during the weekend I would definitely recommend coming early and putting down your name. My friends and I arrived at 7:30 and were told we would only have to wait 30 minutes. Luckily there's a restaurant on the first floor so we ended up getting some drinks and a bite to eat. Right when we sat down, I got a text update saying that the wait had changed to 1 hr and 30 minutes - in the end we had to wait around 2. I ordered the yellow tang and it was delicious - very fruity and reminded us of a laffy taffy. A friend ordered the star cycle and I loved the jasmine flavor in it. They must have the coolest backsplash in the city: an angled glass pane emulating the bow of a ship, a bluish backlight evoking the ocean deep, and a campy mermaid mural. The bartenders are creative, featuring drinks based on not just rum but also whisk(e)y, gin, and vodka -- versatility that most tiki bars can't claim. $16-22 for most mixed drinks.
