This strip mall at the edge of town is a busy area with a somewhat awkward intersection leading up to it. I arrived to find my takeout ready in time. This place offers a variety of vegan options, and notably you can get most of their dishes not just with vegetables or fried tofu, but the option existed to pay extra for organic tofu. It is reasonable to wonder whether it is worth the upcharge, but the result was a robust nutty flavor in my dishes that kept me full and satisfied. Maybe it was Hodo brand, but if not, there's something else out there of similar quality. I eat a lot of tofu, and you can tell the difference. I was less enthused with my chive cakes, which were just tremendously oily and also had a rather strong cruciferous smell. Would not order again. The laab, despite the quality tofu, was decent but did not blow me away. The green curry was full flavored, while the drunken noodles came up just one flavor note short; needing some vegetarian substitute for whatever they left out. Those two times have been the best thai food I've tasted, best service I've had, and the aesthetic in there is very chill with lofi beats and occasional soul music. Was looking around for a place to eat some lunch and just so happen to come across this place online. The parking lot is big so no issues finding a parking space. They offer outdoor dining but we chose to eat inside due to the heat. The interior is very clean with some cool decoration hanging from the ceiling. The ceiling decoration was very aesthetically pleasing to the eye. For appetizer, we had the chicken satay that came with a peanut butter type sauce. It was ok in my opinion, just. Nothing mind blowing. For my entree I had the crab fried rice while my companion had the drunken noodle. When the food first came out the portion size may look small but it does fill you up at the end. The crab fried rice was very good and hot. I also did try some of the drunken noodle with spicy and it was delicious. The one female staff member who was the host and waiter was very friendly and attentive to our needs by refilling our drinks as needed. Yum!! I came here for lunch with a friend and the food was very good, I would come back. 4/5, above expectations. Service was fast, the inside of the store is clean and comfortable. Plenty of seating. I got the Thai tea with coconut milk and it was good. Well balanced and not too sweet, which I like. I got the pho with beef and it was really good. The broth was AMAZING! I've had pho other places in cville and thought I just wasn't a pho person - this was the best I've had here. Very good. The portions are LARGE too, it was definitely enough to feed 2 people. It was $12-13 which was really reasonable for the amount of food. The beef was just okay, maybe a little dry, but the broth itself was so delicious. I would get it again. Chimm is really careful with food waste, which I appreciated, so there are options to have items on the side to not waste food. Chimm also clearly marks items that are prepared spicy, and these are clearly marked. Know what you can handle spice wise, they will not refund you if you order something and can't handle it. This applies to certain dishes - most things on the menu however come at a 0 spice level, and they bring you a set of add ons - hoisin sauce, sriracha, chili oil, chili paste, flakes and jalapeños. If you like spice like I do, you can season it yourself which I LOVVEEE. This is a different approach than most Thai places in town and I really like that they do this. Overall they are very direct with the instructions for their menu and I appreciated this. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was nice and i spent $23 for food drink tax and tip for myself. Happened upon this place as my husband and I were headed to the George Washington National Park for a camping trip. I'm so pleased that we found this gem of a restaurant. Unfortunately it's take out or delivery...no options for indoor dining at this time. We ordered "to go" and it was as simple as can be. Unless you LOVE Thai food, and can't make up your mind. which was my problem... My husband and I were in Charlottesville for the weekend and I recently binge watched Mark Weins on YouTube. He's based is Bangkok Thailand so lots of Thai food, which got me craving Thai food. A quick Yelp search netted Chimm. The decor is really understated and Zen. Plants across the ceiling and clean lines everywhere else. I like it! It does feel a little like a quick service restaurant but that doesn't bug me. We selected two Sapporo, Laab and grilled shrimp for appetizers. You have to know that the portions here are tiny for the price. The Laab was tasty, the shrimp were boring and plain...I wouldn't order it again. For entrees my hubby got the Tom yum soup and I got stir-fried basil and chicken. I don't love that everything is made with ground or minced meat. I'd prefer to have an actual piece of chicken vs the ground meat that was in my meal, but I get that it is their thing. While everything was okay, it wasn't crave-worthy at all. My hubby and I arrived on a Monday in August about 6:00 PM. First alarm bell was a sign at the entrance that they were short staffed - hmmm. Except for the colorful umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, the atmosphere inside the restaurant is plain with maybe a dozen tables. Only one table was occupied so it wasn't busy. A few people came in to pick up to go orders. Our waiter was new - which we knew because he told us immediately. He wasn't familiar with the menu so any questions we had were answered after he went into the kitchen to ask someone. I get it that COVID put a fly in the ointment, but did someone say minimal training? And speaking of flies, yes, there were plenty of those annoying buggers vying for attention. Moving on. Smack dab in the middle of wine country, and they only serve wine in those little airplane type bottles from who knows what origin (the waiter shrugged his shoulders). So, we opted for water. Wine snobs, I know. For dinner, we ordered Chicken Panang Curry and Chicken and Cashews. It took about 15 minutes for my meal to arrive and another few minutes for hubby's dinner to be delivered. Both meals were decent sized servings, and both were also chock full of slices of chicken, which was a tad tough. The Panang came with 3 florets of broccoli, and a few strips of red pepper. The sauce was flavorful and a bit spicy as a good Panang should be. The Chicken and Cashews had a variety of vegetables (onion, scallions, and carrots), and the Chimm sauce which was tasty. We didn't enjoy the rice as it was dry and crunchy. An hour later, there were 3 occupied tables - again, not busy. But we had to flag down the waiter to get the check, and he left the dirty dishes on the table which is a pet peeve of mine. We decided to venture back since my last review, and I'm happy to see changes since the opening phase! (Plus I had to try out the pho added to the menu!) Updates since my previous review: 1) Service is much more efficient and pretty quick. 2) Thai tea with coconut milk is still delicious and is a must have if you are sensitive to dairy! 3) The pho is flavorful and comes with a decent amount of meat (not just all noodles) - great for a cold rainy day. 4) The pad seew has improved - better balance of sweet and salty and more vegetables mixed in. 5) Be sure to check out their seasonal specials - we tried the fried banana dessert and it reminded me of a Filipino dessert my mom makes at home! Just outstanding, I had the kao poi and ordered the red curry to go. When you find food this good you have to take some back home with you. The kao poi (chicken noodle bowl) was tasty and the noodle as done to perfection not too soft not too hard, feel free to spice it up because I definitely did. They give you lots of options. I'm from NoVa but every time I visit Charlottesville, I have to stop at Chimm. Their food is consistently delicious, even when it's take out. Unfortunately I started eating my food the moment I saw it and have no photos to share. But I highly recommend the basil fried rice, pad see ew, and kaw soi (curried noodles with chicken). One thing I'd like to see improved is the papaya salad. It needs needed more kick and brightness, and maybe more dried shrimp as I couldn't taste any. read more

*takeout review* Last night I tried Chimm for the first time. I called for takeout and the lovely woman on the phone was SO HELPFUL. I ordered myself a vegan drunken noodle dish and for my roomie, a red curry w/ tofu. She immediately said "oh just so you know, the curry has chicken broth." (My roommate isn't vegan or vegetarian so it was no big deal but I was so grateful for a) her knowledge of ingredients and b) the fact that she even cared to inform me without my asking specifically). That alone was enough to make Chimm my go-to. They have an entire VEGAN MENU online. That's a huge relief and makes ordering easy. My drunken noodles were great and I can't wait to try other things. There was only one server, but she hustled and did a great job. (There was a sign up at the hostess desk that they are understaffed and to be patient. They're woefully understaffed so it takes a long time to get seated and it's usually just one waiter running around like a crazy person. We do not have the luxury of living close to anything with delivery but Chimm is our nearest Thai place so we judge our takeout by how it maintains on the drive home. We both ordered curries, and I am happy to report they were both very warm even after a 20 minute drive home. Both curries were also extremely flavorful and were less watery than other Thai places I've sampled. With the online ordering, it doesn't look like you can adjust spice level on many dishes (it was mild) but there was a lot of options for additional veggies, etc. The Fresh rolls were also tasty. The rice portions were fitting for the curry portion. Did not dine in so can't write about internal service. They are closed between 2:30 and 4:30 most days so FYI if you want to order at an off-meal time. Only open for dinner Mondays. read more

Dang! We totally assumed Chimm was gonna be a standard, so-so Thai place before our Avengers show (no spoilers here friends). Boy were we pleasantly surprised. Despite being pretty busy we were seated right away and our drinks brought out lickety-split. We were a little worried bc they have quite a few disclaimers about certain foods requiring more time to prep. But we needn't have worried. The food came out very fast and our server nimbly took care of our checks at the table with her portable card device. For food, my wife got the green curry which she really enjoyed. I ordered the chicken ka soi which had huge chunks of tender chicken and had a nice heat without being overpowering. I liked the side dish of red pepper oil mix and diced red onions they provide if you are so inclined to add said ingredients in your dish. Also, although a small portion, the pork dumplings were really quite good. Its telling that my wife, who isn't a huge fan of Asian food normally, randomly mentioned her desire to go back to Chimm Thai. I have eaten pho in many places, and this eatery was one of the very few that didn't have all the normal ingredients, such as meat ball, tendons, beef slices, etc. their soup was very good, but the pho portion was way too small. Finally made it to Chimm a couple weeks ago, and I regret not making it there sooner. Either way, our rainy evening was quickly warmed up by our hot bowls of flavorful curry/noodles. I asked the waitress for her suggestions (Chimm employee's favorites are marked on the menu, but I wanted some honest back and forth dialogue to help me understand the best options before ordering). We shared the dumplings for a starter, and they were very tasty and plump. Four comes with an order and it was a good start to the meal. I ended up going with the Kao Soi for my main, and woo boy I can't imagine ordering anything else when I go again! I'm sure there are many other things I would enjoy, but this dish was so good I am already loyal to it. Our waitress informed us that she believed Chimm to be the only Thai restaurant in Cville (and maybe anywhere outside of Thailand?) that serves Kao Soi, so it is unique and worth trying! The huge portion of chicken was so tender, and the broth was creamy, garlicky and gingery. It was spicy, but without much heat, just deliciously spiced, and it came with a little tray of toppings and chilis to add extra spice should you so wish. My husband, who has a peanut allergy, ordered the panang curry which we were fairly certain did not have any mention of peanuts, but he forgot to ask to clarify (which he usually does at Asian restaurants) so when it came and he took a small sip and realized it might have peanut butter in the sauce, he asked and our waitress kindly and quickly went to ask with the kitchen--yes it did have peanuts, so she took it away and suggested the red curry for him instead as it was the most similar but without nuts. The red curry came out pretty quickly, so we resumed our meal. I tried some of his and it was also very good. Unfortunately by that point his stomach was already doing backflips just from the slight contact with the allergen, so he couldn't eat much, but he took what he didn't eat to go, and my portion was large enough that even eating my fill I had a substantial amount to take away as well. My husband fully enjoyed the red curry the next day for lunch. Overall the service was prompt, friendly and very courteous, and even with our allergen mishap shedding a bit of a shadow on the dining experience, the food itself was delicious and plentiful and we'll hope to be back again, but we will be more careful about asking about the presence of allergens! read more

I came back here for lunch but it wasn't all that great. I started off with the Vietnamese spring rolls which were good but it only came with two pieces for $7 with shrimp. Typically it would be $2 or $4 at a restaurant but this seemed like such a rip off. I'm torn because it is good which I won't find anywhere else in cville. The fish pancakes were decent. For the main course we ordered drunken noodle with beef, pork belly in garlic stir fry and the crispy duck stir fry. I'll start off by saying the pork belly was pretty good. It was cut into little pieces in a tasty garlic sauce. The drunken noodle was not very tasty.. it was salty but not flavorful and not spicy at all. The beef also seemed over cooked. The crispy duck was also drenched in an overly salty sauce. For dessert, we tried the mango in sticky rice. First the coconut milk was over the mango and not on the sticky rice. The sticky rice was some weird rice texture that was undercooked and just not appetizing. Update: I'm adding a star because I just had the thai boat noodle soup delivered to my house. I still stand with what I wrote before but I do believe they have enough good food to get me to come back. The broth was delicious. I got the wide noodles which stuck together because it was still hot when they delivered it to me. I would recommend them rinsing it under cold water before packaging it. However, I understand the difficulty of delivering noodle soups. All in all, I would come back for the soups, spring rolls, and other dishes I've yet to try. read more

All of the dishes/ingredients were fresh with great flavors and the Thai iced tea was pretty tasty as well. I've both dined at the restaurant and done carry out. It's nice to have a south east asian restaurant here in C'ville! And to be located so conveniently in the 5th st shopping center with both indoor and nice outdoor seating is a huge plus! I will say that this menu is quite ambitious. I think it's trying to be both authentic in its offerings but also appeal to the wider audience of Charlottesville that may not be as familiar with south east asia and looking to get their more typical and favorite asian dishes.
