Chimys is okay lately, but Synthia (sorry if I spelled that wrong) needs a raise. I come here w my people entirely too often and this the only bartender who ever smiled at us. She was happy to be there, unlike the other bartenders I've experienced here.

The margs are made with everclear... pro or con depending on your taste. You will only taste alcohol. Uber & stay safe y'all.

We had just landed in Lubbock on Friday for the Texas Tech football game this weekend and met some friends at Chimy's for a drink. Wow, the entire restaurant was packed inside and the outdoor patio as well. The drinks were cold, and we enjoyed the atmosphere inside the bar.

If you are a relatively poor college student, who, ironically, happens to live in a college town, have no sense of taste, and just need cheap drinks and something in the gut to soak up the alcohol, this place is for you. Look at the majority of reviews. They mention the "great" drinks and hardly mention the food... If you are say...25+, have taste buds, a decent palate, but STILL like cheap drinks...this is place is for you. Just don't eat. The tacos were a solid meh. Processed cheese and mass produced tortillas really masked the flavor of the chicken, which in and of itself, was relatively dry. I applied a lot of pico just to get it down. Portion size is decent though. If you are say...25+, have taste buds, a decent palate, and don't require being smashed before 6PM...I would recommend Chili's down the road. That's right. You heard me. I would recommend Chili's over Chimy's. That should be all you need to know. Rock solid 2 stars.

Wanted to check this place out but it's a shame the door guy is prejudice. It appears he only allows a certain race (white) and sexuality (straight) into the bar. On the night of Friday 3-17-23 I decided that I wanted to try this bar. I'm always open minded and like to try new things. When I approached the entry, there was a young door guy with a cowboy hat on. He looked me up and down, I provided a valid ID, and he still refused to let me enter. I would like to note that I am well over 21 and my ID reflects that. When I asked him what his reasoning was to not let me in he just gave me a blank stare. His buddies (who all looked the same as him) snickered as I walked away. He was speechless. He knew better than to admit the real reason why he wouldn't let me in - that is, because they obviously have a problem with my community.

My first time I went, my group of guys and I were put in a room with all the other white people. Not to say they were profiling, but looking at the rest of the restaurant's population on a busy Sunday, they had us in the gringo room. The food hit. I get putting a bunch of three-taco-plate-and-queso people in one room. I have not been back in quite a while, but I remember their menu being the most behemoth-looking thing ever. Every item had a picture taken on a Coolpix camera, and the text was almost impossible to read on the menu's busy background. That is proof that the food was going to hit. After returning, the menu has been minimized to be more readable, only slightly keeping that same over-the-top flair. The prices have gone up slightly, but where have they not? On a Thursday night, we were seated immediately around 7:30 and had a pretty attentive waitress. Like every good Tex-Mex joint in Texas, their chips and salsa roam freely through the restaurant, and the salsa has a good kick that is easy to manage while still having the heat everyone wants. They also have a creamy green sauce and other sauces they bring out by request. I ordered a combination plate with a crispy beef taco, a beef burrito, and a chicken enchilada with a side of Mexican rice. I added a side of refried beans because no Tex-Mex meal is complete without a big serving of refried beans to mix with the rice and crush with tortilla chips. The crispy taco was unreal. The shell feels like it was double-fried. It has such an incredible hardness to it. It feels premium. The beef burrito and enchilada were great as well, but I was blown away by the taco to an extreme. They have a pretty broad selection of Mexican beers, including Tecate, Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, Modelo Negra, and Victoria next to your Coronas, Sol, and Dos Equis. Their margaritas are pretty great, if my memory serves me right, as well. I love this place, and I was glad to give it a revisit while being back in Lubbock for a bit. It is just classic and timeless. I just wish their menu was as much of an eyesore as it used to be because that sucker brought me so much joy. RIYL: Gaining five pounds in an hour. A good meal.

The restaurant is large and has plenty of seating. We were seated quickly on a Friday evening. Like most mexican, tex-mex restaurant, we were given chips and salsa to start. I feel like I'm not usually picky with something so simple. However, the chips didn't seem to have enough flavor. I felt like it could have used more salt. The salsa also tasted a bit off. Specifically, it tasted more sour than I would have liked. I ordered a bistec plate (not sure what it was specifically as I'm writing this a few weeks from my original visit). There was sauteed beef with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and bacon. It was delicious! Everything was flavored nicely. Went great inside the warm flour tortillas that were provided. The sides of mexican rice and pinto beans were good as well. Aside from the food, the service was great. Attentive and kind. I still wish I could have paid for this meal, especially now in retrospect. My Lubbock host was too quick and went ahead and paid for the two of us. As we left, there was something wrong with the doors on the way out. I don't remember that being an issue as we came in. One of the sets of doors just seemed to jam. It was probably just me though (it was). Overall, I'd recommend this place! Maybe it was an off day for the chips and salsa. Otherwise, everything was great.

We started with the house chips and salsa trio, which is always a win here. The chips were warm and crisp, and the variety of salsas--from bright and fresh to deeper and more roasted--made it easy to keep reaching for "just one more." A solid way to kick things off. For my main, I went the veggie route, and honestly, this was the standout of the meal. The sizzling vegetable fajitas arrived steaming hot and loaded with broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, and squash--perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, and served on a cast-iron skillet that kept everything hot down to the last bite. Colorful, hearty, and surprisingly satisfying, even without meat. The rest of the table went more traditional with enchiladas, rice, beans, guacamole, and queso, and everything looked generous and comforting in that familiar, crave-worthy Tex-Mex way. Portions are filling, flavors are approachable, and it's easy to find something for everyone at the table. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a lively bar area and cozy booths that make it a great spot for a casual dinner, family outing, or low-key night out. Service was friendly and efficient, and everything came out exactly as expected. Abuelo's may be a familiar name, but when you're in the mood for reliable Tex-Mex, solid vegetarian options, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe, it absolutely hits the mark.
