The plaza is a really great sit down Tex mex option. It's kinda on the upper side of price ($20-25 per) but consistently delivers pretty great quality. I got the steak fajita combo which was very well prepared, came with 4 tortillas and a few sides, and of course a massive plume of steam which blinded me (8/10). I also tried some of the shrimp nachos from my friend which were quite good, but they were like... just nachos... so kinda overpriced (6/10). Complementary Chips were alright, salsa was eh, they had a bowl of choco mints which was a nice gesture. Service was quite standard, indoor decore was also standard. They had an entire garlic bunch near where I sat which, I presume, was there to ward off vampires??? So the establishment probably has had an issue with a coven in the past so that's mildly concerning. 10/15 Pretty good Tex mex, kinda mixed value for the price though, standard ambiance, standard service. The food and our server were great! However, the woman up front was extremely disrespectful. I think her name was angel, she was the only one in the front and told us that she was not a host and that we would have to wait to be helped. When we sat on the bench to wait we noticed the other hosts were very busy. When a younger host came up she proceeded to yell at her. Then a server came up and she also was disrespectful to him. We thought that maybe she was just busy folding menus so thought nothing of it. But when we were leaving, I noticed a different host folding menus and she immediately helped the next people to come in. Me and my wife felt extremely disrespected by her. The service was good. The food is not all that good. The refried beans taste like rositas canned beans. I ordered the fried diced potatoes, they were out. I was offered "Mexican papas" aka mashed potatoes, no thank you. The fries were good though. The taco tasted off, taco bell tastes better. The stuffed sopapilla was okay. This is the third time I've been there and the food gets worse each time. I don't recommend, overpriced for what you get, quality wise. Side of black beans (good but under seasoned) and mashed potatoes (under seasoned but 3.5 stars). The sopapillas were doughy and a bit more like a biscuit. The ground beef was very bland. Then the whole thing is covered in basically melted velveta. I was hungry and managed to finish one. I left half the beans but none of the potatoes. I had perhaps the best tamales ever here! One look at the menu and saw the wide variety. Decided to try brisket & avocado tamales. Sauces were a bit of trouble deciding, which wasn't a bad thing. Heard buddy pick jalapeño cream so opted for that, with salsa verde on another. Taste was awesome! Black beans & rice to go with it! Service was very friendly and got everyone's order correct. This place is fantastic! We celebrated a birthday here and everyone was so happy with their plate. My hubby loves me enough to let me taste his Chimichanga with fajita steak, and it was yummy! My own Crispy Relleno plate was outstandingly delicious. I will get it again. I didn't see Tito's Tea on the menu and they looked it up and made it for me! Wow! However, my dad was raving about his Plaza Sunrise, so I had a sip of his second round, and my eyes twirled! I'm getting a Plaza Sunrise next time! We ended up here because every other choice closed at 9 p.m., and the Plaza was open till 10. I split the enchilada trio with the wife. This is two cheese enchiladas topped with red sauce and steak fajita meat. It also came with beans & rice. Everything was hot and flavorful. The fajita meat was tender. The salsa here is also a favorite. Chunks of tomato and not too hot. The server was friendly and prompt and we always enjoy the sports on tv in the background and music that's not too loud. read more

Lubbock is chock full of Mexican restaurants, so it's no surprise that many of them have been popping up in the more high end segment. If you want a more low light, dark leather, and intimate experience than say Rosa's, The Plaza is a better bet. Perhaps the biggest difference is the presence of a full bar here. Food is good with a nice variety of healthier veggie heavy choices. It doesn't deviate much from the standard Mexican food variety you expect most places. The quality and flavor is marginally better, while the prices are much higher - it's $22 for a dinner order of fajita combo with chicken and beef. The most popular menu item from my family is the fried mushrooms, though I don't feel especially that these are true Mexican fare. Service here has been okay. I never had a huge issue to complain about. The waiting staff seems like mostly high school and college students. The manager comes around every now and then to greet each table. It's worth a visit once a month for a nicer meal. read more

Great surprise on a recent business trip to Lubbock. I'm always suspect of flashy Mexican restaurants as they tend to be more tex-mex, non-traditional plates full of cheese and some type of red sauce they call "chile." This place is NOT one of them. The food was very good, I opted for the fried chile relleno and enchilada plate with spicy green chile and it was very good. The charro beans had great flavor and they offered a spicier salsa with the chips. A special shout out to Lili, one of the manager/hostess, who suggested I try the package of bunuelos they were selling at the host table. They are excellent. I came here with some colleagues looking for some good Mexican food on 10/11/22. One of my group grew up in West Texas and is a longtime fan. For me, the experience was just ok. The chips and salsa were the stand out items, and they gave me a lot of hope for the main course. The chips were hot and fresh, and although the standard salsa was delicious, you could ask for a spicier version which also had some good flavor. I had the Create Your Own Enchilada plate. The custom enchilada section took up a good section of the menu, and seemed like a smart idea in offering not only what fillings you could get in your enchiladas, but also what sauce they would come covered in and how many. I got two cheese enchiladas and one veggie enchilada, all covered in red sauce. For an extra topping I asked for fried eggs. The red sauce turned out to be more of a chili sauce. It tasted ok but it wasn't what I expected, having ordered the traditional red. The eggs were nowhere to be seen and were shortly afterwards brought out on a separate plate so I could slide them onto the enchiladas. Flavor wise, overall, they were ok. My refried beans were also so-so, and surprisingly enough, the side of sautéed veggies were the hit of the meal. All in all, the service was good and the food was ok. Work trip and asked a friend where to go. One of 3 suggested and was closest to me. Greeted at door and sat. Hostess was nice and friendly. About 5 minutes passes before waitress came by. It didn't take to long for her to come back to take my order. Food came out fairly quickly and had good flavor, Just like most texMex restaurants in the state. Came into town to visit my brother and his family and we were wanting some good Mexican food! I got the taco cabarenios and it was delish!! It was filled with mango and chipotle sauce perfect blend of sweet and savory, I highly recommend trying it! Mostly just confirming all the good reviews before mine. The Plaza was walkable from our hotel, which is important when on a motorcycle trip and wanting a margarita (1 drink = no ride back to the hotel). Like others, we over-indulged a bit by starting out with the queso and salsa (see pic). The entrees were large and good quality. Highly recommend sitting at the bar if it's just one or two of you. I've lived in Lubbock for a couple of years. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant. I don't understand the bad reviews, that just hasn't been my experience. I love the choose your own enchiladas.... Shredded chicken with jalapeno cream sauce and brisket with red sauce, are a couple of my favorites. The rellano is also excellent. Margaritas are good. This place is always crowded as a testament to its good food and affordable prices. I eat here regularly and look forward to my next visit soon! read more
