We have been loyal customers since the early 90s and loved their lunch specials . However, they've changed their way of doing business in many ways. The same very courteous people. Just limited, at quite costly, smaller portions, lunch "specials". We've tried them a few times in recent months and have to say we will not be returning. Just can't justify the change in their way of doing business at a very high cost. It's unfortunate however, it's a decision they've made and we no longer will support what they are providing. read more

The food is delightful, the ambience is superb, but that's not the story. The service is beyond impeccable.

My favorite Chinese place in town. Have been eating here since I was a kid. The last two visits have been especially good. I highly recommend the sizzling rice soup- the sesame shrimp- the mala chicken. The mala green bean. Everything is tasty. They have added some things to the menu also. I also appreciate they stay open until 10pm. I am able to come in as a single guest and easily get a table around 8:45. Very fast service. Freshly cooked and steaming hot. read more

When I've eaten inside the meal is good but I just placed an order for pickup and it was horrible there was no sauce except for the first dish I can't eat a whole serving in one meal so I left half of it for lunch today it was very little sauce in the first meal there was no sauce left for the second meal so it was horrible it didn't give enough rice so I had to make rice which didn't make it any better so don't order and pick it up read more

Food has always been fantastic as well as the serving staff. Well that seems to have ended with our last visit. The first guy we saw as we walked in had on jeans and a T shirt and seemed like he wished he was somewhere else. A woman came up and seated us. Our waitress came but couldn't speak English. She was Indian. Hmm. She had to go get someone, another Indian lady to translate. We ordered and both of our food was horrendous. I ordered the green pepper steak but it was this long piece of fat and mostly vegetables. It was also lukewarm warm. I looked into the kitchen and not one Asian person back there but Hispanic men. China Cottage in Centerville is arguably the most interesting and romantic Chinese restaurant of 70+ Greater Dayton Metropolitan area restaurants. China Cottage in Centerville is located in a former steak house property. China Cottage has been transformed into a Chinese restaurant which resembled a restaurant during our recent visit to Shanghai, China. Predictably, my wife requires some time to review the very extensive menu, and this is always a neat indicator. In the meantime, we order China Cottage's version of Golden Calamari. China Cottage original's restaurant is in Kettering, and this small local chain has restaurants in Trotwood, Kettering, Springboro, and Centerville. We do not like that China Cottage has NO lunch menu ( since covid.) My Kung Pao Shrimp plate includes Large shrimp, napa, carrots, onions and celery sautéed in spicy Kung Pao sauce with peanuts. My wife selected Triple Delight: Shrimp, scallops, chicken breast, broccoli, napa, carrots, celery, snow peas and mushrooms sautéed in brown sauce. Our son decided on Hunan Chicken: Sliced chicken breast, broccoli, mushrooms, baby corn and carrots sautéed in spicy Hunan sauce. The ambience of China Cottage is enhanced with window seating. Ambiance is great! It's a very stylish and artsy restaurant. Usually service is pretty slow. Food is always tasty and served hot, wait staff is usually very friendly. Last visit yesterday however, there was a wedding party in the house. Our host walked us past several quieter, much less crowded sections and decided to seat us right next to the boisterous wedding crowd. They were raucous and obnoxious. We couldn't hear ourselves think. We couldn't hear each other talk. We could barely hear the waitress who took our orders. Since we were not part of the wedding group we did not understand why we were seated in the already super crowded, very noisy section of the restaurant when there were plenty of other seats available. When our food arrived, we immediately got the check, and some boxes and went home to eat in peace. The wedding group was very rude, and in our opinion it was also pretty rude of the host to seat us in with them. Because of this recent negative dining experience, I'm docking a star off my rating. read more

Our server was horrible and our food took way longer than normal m, even though they weren't crowded. Our food was luck warm. The only hot item was the tea. We had to ask our waitress, Farhan, for plates & serving spoons. On the way out, my husband stopped to use the restroom and realized there was no hot water to wash his hands. Nice place. Food is ok. But where they lose it is in cleanliness. Our table was dirty/sticky. My chair was dirty/sticky. We didn't say anything but the woman who was seated at the etable next to us spoke up right away and had the hostess come and wipe down her sticky table. Menus had sticky gross fingerprints on numerous pages. Worst thig was the lack of paper towels in the restroom. They were not just out of them, they just don't provide them; they only have the blow dryer. So, you can wash your hands in there, but then you have to grab the pull handle to get out of the restroom and who knows what snot-soaked fingers had just been on that pull handle. We might go back if we hear they have cleaned things up and added paper towels to the restrooms. read more

Have always loved China Cottage Kettering but ordered sizzling beef which is always cooked tableside and is sizzling.Tonight they put it on an iron skillet on a porcelain plate on the table.If it had been really sizzling it would have broken the china plate .When we complained to the manager she said people complained it was splashing on them- never heard of such a thing.Now they are doing it in the oven.Sizzling beef is supposed to be hot.Mine was warm but not sizzling.If you can't keep up quality take it off the menu.Good luck in getting the server to come back and check on your meal so you can deal with issues. We are now looking for a new Chinese restaurant- a carryout would have been better than our experience tonight and cheaper too. The past few times I've dined there, the service was terrible, it's like they just don't care. Then, last night I called at 9:20 to place a takeout order...they close at 10:00. I was told the kitchen was already closed (40 minutes prior to closing ). As I was in the middle of asking a question about how late the kitchen typically stays open, the lady literally hung up on me! The situation was exacerbated for me because I was trying to find egg drop soup for my niece who is recovering from food poisoning and the only thing she wanted was egg drop soup. Very pleased. The dumplings were great, you could tell they were made in house. The braised beef was delicious. My husband loved the Three Element seafood dish. We were very happy to try a new place and the menu has a lot of traditional options typical, places don't have. We are happy to have a new option in that part of town. We will be back. read more

Don't know what happened here but both my wife and I tasted it and then threw it away. The staff is pleasant and ambience is nice. I do plan on going back. Truly the best Chinese we've ever had. Very authentic, loved the vibe of the restaurant. Quiet but lively and you could tell all other customers were regulars who loved the food. The crab Rangoons were extremely fresh and the beef tip skewers were the most amazing thing on the menu. The Lakewood chicken was fantastic and the chefs combination was incredible. Overall 10/10. I have since moved out of state but go to China cottage when in town. we arrived into Kettering on 7/3/24 after a very long roadtrip. we ordered carryout on Hunan Chicken, hot an sour soup . when we arrived at our destination, they had given us hunan shrimp and the soup tasted like it came from a can! the quality on Wilmington has declined. we decided to go to the Centerville location tonight..it was soooo good that I didn't hesitate taking it home for a second meal. wake up Wilmington Ave. location. you have declined on taste and quality! read more

I went to China cottage today! The prices on menus was fair priced. I got chicken and fried rice and soup. It only took a few minutes to get our food! The chicken was a little hard to eat! One of my favorite Northern Chinese dishes is Mu Shu and it's full of cabbage, wood ear mushrooms, bean sprouts, scrambled egg, scallions, your choice of meat and then flavored with a dab of plum sauce and then all rolled up in a crepe. Looks like a burrito...and some waiters jokingly call it a Chinese Burrito. Now most servers will just set all this down on your table, smile and then scurry away, probably because they're such a pain in the butt to roll up without it all falling apart. This place though, has a server named Connie who will gladly make them for you table side. Actually, she insists on doing it for you. She fills, sauces, flips, rolls and then sets them on your plate, all the while using only chopsticks. Give her about 20 seconds and she'll have 2 of them on your plate and ready to eat. She's a chopsticks wizard and I've actually applauded her for her skills. (It embarrassed her by the way). It's a nice enough old school Chinese American restaurant. It's kinda cramped with tables that are just a little too close together and sometimes the other servers besides Connie are a little lackluster. It's pretty decent food wise and it does stand out in a city that's not really known for great Chinese food. If you are ever in the Dayton area, I'd say to give them a try. I give this place is about 3.75 Stars with an extra spoonful of plum sauce if Connie is working. read more
