One of my favorite Northern Chinese dishes is Mu Shu and it's full of cabbage, wood ear mushrooms, bean sprouts, scrambled egg, scallions, your choice of meat and then flavored with a dab of plum sauce and then all rolled up in a crepe. Looks like a burrito...and some waiters jokingly call it a Chinese Burrito. Now most servers will just set all this down on your table, smile and then scurry away, probably because they're such a pain in the butt to roll up without it all falling apart. This place though, has a server named Connie who will gladly make them for you table side. Actually, she insists on doing it for you. She fills, sauces, flips, rolls and then sets them on your plate, all the while using only chopsticks. Give her about 20 seconds and she'll have 2 of them on your plate and ready to eat. She's a chopsticks wizard and I've actually applauded her for her skills. (It embarrassed her by the way). It's a nice enough old school Chinese American restaurant. It's kinda cramped with tables that are just a little too close together and sometimes the other servers besides Connie are a little lackluster. It's pretty decent food wise and it does stand out in a city that's not really known for great Chinese food. If you are ever in the Dayton area, I'd say to give them a try. I give this place is about 3.75 Stars with an extra spoonful of plum sauce if Connie is working. read more

Normally not a huge issue, but in this case she couldn't answer any questions about the menu and got an order wrong for a person with food allergies. Food: Overly sugary sauce in the Mongolian lamb and the pork loin in pineapple sauce. The lamb was seriously disappointing, it was a little gamey and very chewy. The pork was better. The side of steamed rice was enough for maybe half a plate of food. Cost: For what you get, not good. About $30 after tax for two entrees. There were green beans sitting in the hall on the way to the ladies room. We were very disappointed with the service. We've been disappointed at this location in the near past, decided to try lunch. The specials are now limited to four choices you have to pay extra for egg roll and they have one waitress for the whole place. They didn't bring me any sauces to the table I had to ask for hot chili oil and when they gave it to me it was an old dried up container of it from the refrigerator that they hadn't checked in a long time obviously. Husband and I stopped in for dinner and had a nice time. The building and decor is nice, we were seated in the lower level (3 steps). The reason I rate this place one star is that this place holds a racial discrimination against chinese students, they force chinese students to pay 20% tips by adding it directly to the check. I went there several times before with my American friends, everything was fine, no overcharging, polite waitress. Even though the bathroom was always cold and dirty, it is not a big deal. However the last time I went there with my chinese friends, they just treat us totally differently. It is extremely unfair and even illegal to do so. I almost called the police, but my friends stopped me. They are nice and submissive, although they were treated in such a mean way, they still don't want to get this place into any trouble. Well, I will start off by saying the food is great. The price is more than fair. The service is also great. My only complaint is the atmosphere. The whole place gives off this vibe of pretentiousness. An apotheosis of this piousness can be found with the selection of eating utensils. Some of their forks are made of wood instead of metal. Moreover, these modern forks don't even have prongs with which to stab your food! I don't get it. It appears as though they tried incorporating contemporary forks in an attempt to be unique and prestigious. This kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Again, the food is great. Their lunch specials are so good and a great deal! I love the 75 cent crab rangoons and the hot and sour soup that comes with the lunch entree. We got the sweet and sour chicken, tangerine chicken salad, and almond chicken and they were delicious. The almond chicken came out later than the other food and it was a little cold (probably because they were waiting on the brown rice?) but that's the only food issue we had. Good service, good food, and some decent wine and beer pricing. I think this is the best Chinese in town, Flying Tiger in Fairborn a close second. This location is currently being remodeled but is still open, Centerville location is done being remodeled. I have a meeting in 2 minutes but I have to point out that after going last night, I'm growing bored of their food. Having Chinese in Dayton is never a culinary adventure, but I certainly am not finding that the addition of BD's, etc. is not really kicking it up a notch - definitely not motivating any growth in the existing Chinese food market. Avoid at all cost. By far the worst location out of the three in the Dayton area. Taste and quality is far from the rest. It's the closest to my job and sometimes I hope that I'd walk in and the food is like the other locations. I've had tasteless food several times. This trip I ordered the lunch portion and they gave me a portion of a portion. Asked to fix problem and they refused. Will return food and get refund. STAY AWAY!!! Update: returned food as asked by staff. The guy wanted to argue with me and snatched the receipt. This has NEVER happened at any of the other locations. Lunch specials are stellar in this place. Great service. The creamy chicken on the lunch special is so tasty. I've also had a scallop dish and the scallops were perfectly prepared. Scallops are easy to overcook. A note to new diners, if you order a spicy dish they tend to go mild. Their spicy rating is from one to five. They will spice it to your taste. I was craving Chinese food, and my daughter, who is not fond of it, gave in to my piteous cries. Fortunately, China Cottage proved excellent for my taste Nd for hers as well. The decor is classic Chinese restaurant as of my teenage years in the 1960s, which made me happy and nostalgic at the same time. An earlier review mentioned how wonderful China Cottage's Hot and Sour soup is. They were precisely right! This is a rich and flavorful soup, just sour enough, just spicy enough. Based on another review, I decided to order the Mu Shu Pork. Our server was Connie, and she made made up the "Chinese burritos" quickly, with chopsticks. They were quite yummy; it's been a long time since I have seen them on the menu in California. Too many fast food Chinese places there; the contrast was a pleasure. A few days ago we had a little surprise when my husband found some gift certificates for China Cottage restaurant that we had been given last Christmas. I love when I find a forgotten treasure. We decided to use them last night, ordering at our nearest location in Kettering. While browsing the menu online, I noticed that the prices had gone up some since the last time I had ordered there. Admittedly, that had been a while, but still it seemed higher than what I was expecting to pay for Chinese takeout. Here is a breakdown of what we ordered and how it was: ·Crab ragoons- I love a good crab ragoon. These were on the sweeter side which is not my personal preference. They were cooked to crispy and stuffed with plenty of cheese filling. Firecracker shrimp- We had never ordered this before so were not sure what to expect. The shrimp were cooked fine, but the spice was pretty mild. My little kids were able to comfortably eat a few pieces. There was so much liquid and not much flavor. For the price of over $9, I was disappointed. Sizzling Combination- This had a mix of seafood and chicken. It was lightly flavored and tasty. Mala Chicken- This one had some spice at a comfortable level. I liked it. Chicken Stir fried rice noodle- This was just okay. Nothing special, nothing necessarily wrong with it. Fried rice- I was unimpressed. The seasoning was pretty good, but it wasn't what I want in a fried rice. Very few vegetables mixed in, no egg. Spring rolls (came with meal)- Crunchy, filled well. Fairly standard for a spring roll. Egg Drop soup- My husband tried to eat this. It was not good. Thick, not much flavor, mouthfeel felt weird. Wonton soup- This wasn't bad, but needed a lot of seasoning. The food took about 20 minutes and the person on the phone was friendly. Overall, I would say the food is just okay here. China Cottage is definitely a go-to place for Chinese in Dayton. Always consistently good food, fresh ingredients, and clean environment. We typically order to go but the few times we have dined in the service was prompt and friendly. I'm sure the food here is very Americanized Chinese food, but it's good and that's what matters to me! In my opinion their hot and sour soup is the best around and I love the pork fried rice (extra spicy for me please!). China Cottage is a little more expensive than some of the other places around town but less than others, pretty much in the middle from a price standpoint.
