TL;DR: I wouldn't come back here for dim sum. I thought this place was good when I visited a year ago, but my most recent visit was disappointing. It's expensive for what you get, around $25 per person, which would be fine if the food were better. Most of the dim sum from the carts arrived cold and a bit dried out instead of hot and fresh. Service was friendly (though I didn't see the kind older gentleman from last time), and the restaurant is big, spacious, and nicely decorated. This is a standard and good-quality dim sum restaurant, in an unpromising location across a car wash from a highway interchange. They do the usual dim sum standards well--the bean curd skin roll and egg tart were particularly good. I found the dumplings a bit thicker than I might have liked, and one baby octopus was undercooked compared to the others, but that doesn't take away from it being solid dim sum as good as you'll find almost anywhere. They were surprisingly uncrowded on a Sunday morning...I hope that doesn't bode poorly. Though it was busy enough for them to have some carts (even if only a few), which is fun. read more

We were in the area and looking for something for dinner and so glad we found this place. All the good Chinese places around us have went out of business so we've been really looking for some good oriental food. Such a cute Place good service. Huge menu. Some things were very authentic. We shared the Szechuan shrimp and the orange shrimp. The shrimp were very large good texture. We had read about the turnip cake as an appetizer which very bizarre but everybody seem to like it so we gave it a try. If you didn't know what it was you would never in the world guess turnip anything. It really didn't wasn't bad it didn't have much flavor whatever sauce you put on it. I like trying new things I don't know if I would get the turnip cake again but I'm glad I tried it it was not bad. This is the only truly authentic Hong Kong style Chinese restaurant in the Cincinnati area. The restaurant was just passed to the next generation. They have invested in upgrades to everything. It is a must to eat here. There are lobster, crab, and live fish tanks. The ginger scallion lobster is soooo good. The prawns! The pea tips! The pan fried noodles! New owners, new review. We loved the original owners (miss you guys!) and had to try the new updates. And we're glad we did! We got two menus. One was of all the meals you expect to see and the other was all traditional Chinese meals. We opted for traditional, something we had never had. I ordered the Stir-Fried Clams and my wife got the Spicy Beef Rice Noodles. Though to be honest we ate off of each other's plates constantly. The clams were amazing. Fresh peppers and seasoning that reminded me of a perfect day grilling out. Delicious. The rice was perfectly done and a great way to gather the flavors. Her meal was incredible. Delicious beef, wonderful seasoning, perfect wide rice noodles and a broth to die for. Both dishes were very spicy (as we love) and perfectly prepared. The service was wonderful - warm and welcoming. And the updates to the interior were very well done. Pricing was great too, $45 for an high quality meal for two with leftovers. This well-established Chinese restaurant is the authentic real deal! I've done their take-out twice and then hosted 15 friends to dinner there, and it has never disappointed. The interior is ornate and manages to be both beautiful and informal. They could easily accommodate my group, setting 2 tables of eight in the back of the room, which made it both private and quiet. The menus were amazingly impressive -- a legal-pad sized two-sided laminated sheet packed full of options. Plus a separate long description of dim sum options you could order with the meal. They seemed a little stingy with the menus -- giving us only 4 for both tables. But I found more on a stand, and my friends didn't seem to mind passing the menus back and forth. And the food is excellent. One member bought crab rangoon orders for the table, which were crispy and just oozing with cream cheese goodness. I have also tried their General Tso's Chicken, chicken with black bean sauce, beef with vegetables and Kung Pao Shrimp. They were all well-made. The flavor profile is mild but flavorful and the vegetables are fresh and crisp. But I discovered that if I wanted my level of spice (which is a little heat), I can just order one of the dishes designated as hot, like the Kung Pao Sprimp, and the heat level fits my palate perfectly. I also loved the sesame balls and the coconut pudding -- a coconut-flavored gelatin. Ate here on a Friday nite with a large group. Ambiance was good and the noise level was reasonable so we were able to have normal conversations. I had 2 egg rolls, some hot and sour soup and Kung Pao chicken. Everything tasted great, Someone else ordered some crab rangoons to share and they were divine-best I've ever had. I will probably order some on my next visit. Also someone ordered chicken feet with black bean sauce off the dim sum menu and I had several of those. They were great--they do have small bones in them so it is a lot of work for a small amount of meat, but I can see why they are such a delicacy in the Orient. Service was on point and attentive. Definitely the spot to grab your traditional cart dimsum. With minimal options for dimsum, I am glad they offer various dimsum dishes served on carts. I am not aware of any other place that offer this service. It allows people to visualize the food first hand before committing to buying/ordering it. They also offer menu ordering service if needed. This is mostly for larger sized items. Prices are a little steep. 6 dimsum dishes can easily get you to $40/$50 depending on the item you choose. Food is pretty good. I enjoy the shiu mai, bean curd, preserved egg porridge and chicken feet. Those are my go-to items. Their baked sweet pork bun was a little too sweet for my liking. Not a fan of their soup dumplings either (xiao long bao) or shrimp dumpling (hargow). They just don't taste fresh or lacking flavor. The chive dumpling didn't taste right to me - tasted a bit old. Service is a hit or miss here. Sometimes you'll have to flag one of the old men to get you your bill/pick up your bill. So much good food! The restaurant is pleasant and well decorated. There's a huge, I'm not sure what to call it so I'll call it a textured wall mural, on the back wall. It's gorgeous. The delivery of food via carts seemed never ending. I think between the two of us we ended up with over 10 different dishes. I can't speak to what was what, but shrimp was a recurring theme and each of the shrimp dumplings in all their permutations was delectable. Just as it was difficult to track what we were eating, having a sense of the ongoing cost was not possible. Okay, I just checked the menu online and it appears most of the 'standard' dumplings are $4.75 each. Our bill was @ $83, so not really sure how it added up. I heard some customers ask for a menu. There is a dim sum menu; using one may be the best way to go. With a menu you'll know what you're getting and what price point to expect. All that said, there was only one item we didn't care for. Everything else was absolutely delicious and in the end, I wasn't phased by the bill. My friend loves this place so I know we'll be back. One of the first places I ate when I moved to cincy along with my friends who were helping me move. Aside from the personal sentiment I have for this place, the food is amazing. Coming from the east coast, having dim sum was what I needed at the that time remind me of home. Cart service is available for brunch on the weekends otherwise just ask for the dim sum menu! They got all the classics - shu mai, har gow, duck, pork buns, custard buns, lotus root cakes etc. Craving something not in the carts? I always ask for their congee (heals the soul), fried rice, pork belly. The owners are two brothers who always keep a welcoming environment and will suggest favorite recommendations or secret menu specials! Food is super slow with smelly feelings. I waited for 30 minutes until my food got served. Those foods are not cooked properly. The two men in charge did nothing but cause unpleasant feelings in the environment. They are rude and discriminate against asian guests. I don't recommend it at all. We heard that they were under new management. We've gone here in Christmas Day the past five years and this year was totally different. This year they allowed reservations, people without reservations waited anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Once seated it took another fifteen minutes for someone to come get drink orders. It took 30 minutes for food to arrive and it wasn't hot. One order (a combo chow main ) was just chicken and didn't include noodles. We had to flag someone down to refill drinks. The new management obviously did not plan well for Christmas night. In the past the restaurant didn't open til 5:00 and they offered a limited menu. We were there at 5:00, same time we'd arrived in the past. In all fairness we should probably go back on a regular day to see if the same issues occur. Next year (if we return) we'll be sure to make a reservation. Although n talking to a group who had a reservation they said it didn't make a difference, they said they'd been there three hours. They explained to us about the moon cook and the festival. If you want a great experience and really good food Grand Oriental is the place to go. This is a decent place for dim sum in Cincinnati, OH. Got talking to the owner and he has had his restaurant for 20 plus years. He got tired of driving to Chicago for dim sum, so he decided to open his own restaurant serving dim sum. Overall, the quality and taste of the food was good. Only draw back is the small portions, especially the gailan (Chinese broccoli) and fried shrimp. Was expecting a bit more considering the price. My only qualm would be that towards the end, the carts stopped visiting our table and I'm not sure if that's because it was the end of their lunch hours but the difference in food offerings between when we first sit down and 40 minutes in was very different.
