Visiting Bondi for the first time with my family, and I forgot to research where to go. So I popped onto OpenTable and found this place and made immediate reservations. It was a little hard to find, because it's in the interior of a building and not really visible from the street. But we were seated immediately, and had a nice seat overlooking the beach. It's a nice looking space, and probably caters to an evening crowd that like a good cocktail and snack. Where's what we tried: - Mixed Dumpling Basket - Bad. Xiao Long Bao skin was too dry, and already lost all it's soup before trying to pick them up. The skin on the other dumplings were too mushy. Good dumpling have the right textures and none of these had the right texture. - Five Spice Duck Pancakes - Good. The duck was cut quite thick, but it had flavour and the wraps were actually pretty good. Not the most traditional presentation, but it tasted pretty good. Very expensive though. - Sweet and Sour Chicken - OK. Not much better than what you would find find a shopping mall found court, but much more expensive. - Chicken Fried Rice - Good. Rice was prepared and cooked decently, but way too expensive for what we got. Service was extremely slow. We were the only customers for the most part, and the dishes seemed to take forever to come out. Overall - not recommended for a meal. Food is way overpriced, and hit and miss on quality or taste. read more

Amazing service from start to finish. We had no reservation in a Saturday night but they managed to find us a cool spot with ocean views. Decor set the mood for the food, which (I could be wrong), but as best as I could, felt like modern Asian. We had Xiao Long Bao for starters, Kung Pao Chicken, Stir Fry Tenderloin Steak, Chicken Fried Rice (winner!), Sausage Fried Rice (a little sweeter flavor), Mushroom and Eggplant, and Chicken with Ginger and Shallots. I've dined here occasionally over the years. It's convenient and easy to get a table. The kids love it, but let's be honest - it's over priced, cliched Asian fusion food; unimaginative and bizarrely made way too sweet. So, when China Diner just opened up not far from my house (and also next to Messina) I pretty much thought that the world had decided that I was owed some amazing food Karma. (Or that Hall street just needed to be the cool new place to open your mouth and put food in - whichever). Asian Fusion - yeah, yeah we've all heard it before. Look, hear me out, it wasnt anything I havent seen before BUT the atmosphere is amazing, and the food WAS delicious - the Rendang Curry was the standout dish for me (and no, not just because it's so damn fun to say - which it is right? Wow! Amazing Asian fusion food - best shared! We love to sit in the front area, grab a booth if you are lucky but if not sit at the bar or on the shared table and take in the vibe. If you are wanting a more formal experience head out the back to the Shanghai 1920s themed dining room - but be sure to book! This place is expensive but we cannot fault the food or the amazing cocktails - go with the lemongrass and coconut sour. As far as starters go pick the chicken and sesame spring rolls and the mixed dumplings. For mains the green curry is delicious if you are up for something spicy or the sticky pork ribs are a popular choice. You really can't go wrong with your food selections here - but be warned the bill can creep up on you especially with a cocktail or two! read more

This place is amazing. Amazing food, service and wine. Randomly decided to eat here one Sunday night where everything else was closing and was the best decision ever. The menu is aimed at food sharing, as dumpling come in 4's and a number of side dishes as well. Dimmed lights add to the intimate atmosphere. Perfect for sharing a bottle of red. The Asian fusion style food in my eyes can not be faulted. Some of the best fried rice I have had in the eastern suburbs. The Sichuan spice-crusted tofu was mouth watering with the dipping sauce. My other pick would be the vegetarian san choi boa. On the service side we were always checked on to see how we were enjoying our meals, our wine glass was never empty and our food was bought out at appropriate times apart from each other so the table was never too full. So still space to eat. Definitely suggest this place for date night . read more

Hubby and I were on holiday from the US. We came around 6 pm on a Sunday. We were seated right away. Our waiter was friendly and had an awesome personality. We started with drinks. I had a glass of Riesling, very fruity. Hubby had an ale. The dishes we chose was the calamari, chicken and corn shu mei and duck with veggies, plum sauce and pancakes. I've been here a few times and have loved it!! The food is designed to share and everything you order is poked with flavour. I particularly liked the pork San Choy bau which are lettuce cups with pork and vegetables inside. It's a bit messy to eat but definitely worth it. The duck pancakes are tasty too - you construct these yourself but that's good as you can design it in a way you like it. The only let down were the pork buns they were a bit dry. Nicely done, but almost every dish is seriously over sweetened. The amount of sugar even in a fish dish really overtook the flavours. I really like the ideas in this menu and so it seemed a shame to overpower the other tastes. Drunken chicken was best dish with way less sugar overload than every thing else we tried. And although hardly a deal breaker, to charge $3 for a tiny single serve bowl of steamed rice seems petty and kind of negates any feeling of goodwill toward patrons from the Managment. read more

You pay for the good atmosphere. Simply cannot justify paying $18 for 4 fried lamb dumpling that has nothing special about them. Loved there Duck pancakes but still $26 for such a portion is.... OTT The Sichuan chili lamb was beautifully cooked, a bit too much salt. Cool place to be, food is average. read more

It's a fabulous eatery but I can give you a couple of tips. If you are ordering something off the menu that is quick to prepare, make sure your dining partner hasn't ordered a dish that is slow to cook. Our example was Steamed Barramundi v. Crispy skin Chicken. We ordered Wokked greens and rice to accompany these and they were cold when the crispy skin chicken turned up twenty five minutes after the fish. It was as well that we were a couple and willing to share both. The chicken is heavily flavoured with Vietnamese mint, an absolute favourite of mine, pungent with that anise flavour, but if you weren't a fan then the delicious sauce that it is served with would be redundant. The chicken would still be crispy yet moist and delicious. The wait staff are all on a mission and very helpful, but also very busy. Be specific about your order in a noisy environment. We ate at China Diner three times during a week that included New Years Eve/Day, saw it packed to the rafters on two occasions and fair to middling on the third. Particular mention goes to the mixed dumplings, the best I've had. read more

My family and I have been half a dozen times. We love it. Great family friendly atmosphere, interesting food, and often great 'specials'. Be careful the bill can creep up, but the dishes are large so maybe order less, and be prepared for a great night. read more

This place is pretty ordinary and way over priced. The chicken and sesame spring rolls were pretty bland. The biggest disappointment was the crispy pork bao. There was absolutely no crackle on the pork skin. Instead the skin was soggy and rubbery and inedible. Completely unacceptable and overpriced. read more
