Has been my go to since it is close to my work until now. Very disappointed in this Chinese restaurant now. Prices have gone up a lot. Boxes are smaller. And now they basically fill the box with rice and add the meal on top of one side....that already has a bunch of rice in it. The food was not good. I ordered bourbon chicken substitute lo mein for the rice and crab Rangoon. My husband had the broccoli chicken combo with fried rice. It seems like they have a generic cooking process of here's your protein and then ladle whatever sauce over it. The bourbon chicken was not what I expected. It was stringy, bad cuts of chicken, an assortment of veggies, and a lake of sauce. My husband's was similar but with a bucket of dark brown sauce poured on it instead of the sauce I had. I get that a lot of places cook this way by having your protein pre-cooked and then changing out the sauce or sides. But, do you have to make it so obvious? And please cut back on the quantity of sauce. They must go through buckets. I only ate a couple of bites and trashed the bourbon chicken. The lo mein was fine, but it was just noodles and no cabbage or any veg. I will say that the crab rangoon were amazing. They were crunchy, hot, and actually had crab in them. I would order them again, but I don't really feel like scouring the menu until I find something else to go with them, so i don't think we will be back. read more

SO so chinese seems to be very expensive everytime I get the bill for some reason. I mean if your out on the lake all day I would still drive a little further to dragon court but if you're in a super pinch and can't go another 5 minutes then I would order pizza but if you like this place I would still try the other place. Truly terrible food. A plate of lo mien and a couple egg rolls will run you about $20 and it's absolutely not worth it. I've been coming here on and off because there's almost nothing else in Whitmore Lake that's not sandwiches but today I just had to leave a review. The food has been consistently bland even when you specifically ask to make it spicy. I guess they've gotten comfortable catering to the under developed palates of the people in this area. I came here on a day when my office was particularly cold, and China Garden delivered on the only thing that really mattered to me: The food came out so hot it almost burned my mouth. I ordered the General's Chicken lunch combo, which comes with either fried or white rice and either a soda or a spring roll. The man behind the counter didn't ask which I wanted. I got fried rice and spring roll pretty much by default. The spring roll was pretty good. The fried rice was flavorless, brown, and both too hard and too soft at once. Whatever the rice was made in didn't get hot enough to leave any char on it or the vegetables. The General's Chicken, to me, seemed to be previously-frozen fried chicken in a ketchup-based sauce. The red pepper flakes actually had some heat, which was a pleasant surprise, and the sauce wasn't so cloyingly sweet that I couldn't eat it. That's about the best I can say for it. So why did I give them 3 stars? Location, location, location. In Whitmore Lake, there are few options that serve hot food quickly outside of the 3 fast food chains that get old fast. China Garden is the most mediocre Chinese place ever. I'm not going to NOT go here again because it's so close to my house, but the food is fine (not quite good, just fine) and the prices are sliiightly higher than I would consider fair for what you're getting. I will say that their lunch specials look like a great deal- I will definitely consider coming back for lunch. But for dinner the prices get bumped up a LOT- almost twice what they are for lunch! The sesame chicken was ok, but not something I particularly want to order again. Their fried rice and crab rangoon are good. My boyfriend ordered the vegetable chop suey and it was vegetables covered (like SOAKED) in some kind of gelatinous goop. He doesn't plan on ordering that again. I will say though that even though the food wasn't all that I hoped it would be, I disagree with those that say it's all Gordon's stuff. I didn't get that vibe at all. read more

Unfortunately, this place didn't deliver. I love hole in the wall Chinese restaurants. Some are diamonds in the rough. This was more like a fart in a jacuzzi. I would have bumped up the star rating if the price were lower, but as it stands, the quality-to-cost ratio is skewed. A dinner combo plate is $9.95 and up, which is what you'd normally see at mid-level Chinese joins in the Ann Arbor area. For your small, divey places, you typically find $6-9 as the sweet spot. Mediocrity is fine at that range. I ordered the sesame bean curd (I'm a vegetarian), and it was incredibly bland and surprisingly dry (when is bean curd ever dry?!). To counteract it, they poured gobs of a what I suspect is a generic sweet & sour sauce that had already begun congealing by the time we took got our takeout order in the door (we live about five minutes away). The upside is that the rice was moist and not sticky at all. Honestly, this place likely sustains itself because of its location - off the highway and basically the only place in Whitmore Lake to get Chinese unless you go another 10 minutes into Hamburg. It's not horrendous, but it's pretty bland, which is unjustified by the price. read more

They do a great job in preparing authentic Chinese food from a strip mall - take out format. Please disregard any past poor reviews from years past, everyone has a bad day, even the chef. Please give them a second chance and help support our own here in WL. My favorite is their sesame chicken but when I want to take a walk on the wild side I'll order their General Tso-mild. read more

At one point we ordered from here on a fairly regular basis. Things changed, we began eating at other places and before I knew it several years passed. Today after being out and a sick husband at home I thought some nice Chinese food might hit the spot. The food we once had gotten from this restaurant was once fairly good... Well THOSE DAYS ARE GONE! I ordered 2 lunch portion almond chicken combinations. When I got this "stuff" home I found a GFS brand crispy chicken breast sliced into 4 pieces with a few almonds thrown on top. This culinary delight was tossed onto a terribly greasy box of what was supposed to have been fried rice, but I'm not going to swear that that's what I got. The crowning glory would have been the brown gelatinous glob of gravy that was supposed to be poured over the top of this lovely treat. I guess I should have begun with the quart of wonton soup, but really... why bother ? My opinion of the soup really isn't any higher than the main course. There was an egg roll as well. I fear that was also a pre packaged frozen confection as well. If you've made it this far, my recommendation is to drive on. There is a far better Chinese restaurant 10 minutes away. read more

So I used to come here all the time even when the bridge was down. No more the portions get smaller and smaller and smaller. My last two have been a joke. 9 dollars one price of broccoli and barely any chicken. Called four times owner is never there. read more

No flavor to the chop suey. Was sort of a gooey mess. Threw it out. Orange chicken and general chicken pretty good.

Being from NYC, I missed some of the cuisine from Chinatown and neighborhood restaurants. Moving into the WL area a few years ago, I found China Garden, and its my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area! While not a formal "sit down" establishment, I enjoy the take-out and being able to ask for customizing some dishes to my taste and/or eating in CG if I so choose. I favor the spring rolls over egg rolls, but both are good, steamed dumplings, beef teriyaki and their soups are al delicious. Singapore Mei Fun is another favorite - also I avoid certain ingredients and like things w/o hot oil - so I just ask for it to be omitted along with the shrimp. I like their Moo Shu (any type), Egg Foo Young, Mongolian Beef, and of course, they have great combination plates and luncheon specials. Personally, I'm not into fried rice or rice, period, much preferring noodle dishes instead. Their main dishes are great, and there's too many to mention. I also have my own soy and duck sauce at home, so if you need more, ask for it before you leave with your take-out. Be sure to take a menu with you. I always order in the restaurant as sometimes things get "lost in translation" with my NY accent" lol. I bring a magazine, my iPad or read the Coffee News while I sit at a table. You can enjoy your meal at a few dining tables in China Garden, and the owners will be happy to serve you. Either way, after trying the buffets and other Chinese places around, I'm glad China Garden is here in my backyard - its like having authentic NY flavor here in Whitmore Lake! read more

Bourbon chicken is amazing!! I also recommend the shrimp toast. I have been going here for years and they never let me down.

Its nothing fancy, and its not the best chinese food you will ever eat, but its still good food, and you get a massive portion for how much they charge (which is really cheap!). Combine that with the super friendly family that runs the place, and they more than earn a 5-star rating. read more

Disgusting. This used to be a great place - nice portions, good food - but no more. I threw most of the food out. Most of the portions were rice. I ordered Cashew Shrimp ad think I found 4 cashews in the dish and while the shrimp were nice sized, they weren't even de-veined. The Fried Dumplings were tiny and like rubber, and the Spring Rolls were inedible. I threw out everything I didn't eat as well as the menu I picked up. Don't waste your money.
