I have never once been compelled to write a review; however the food and service were so subpar that I feel it would be unethical if I did not. I visit California often and am very well-versed in Chinese cuisine. The fact that they have the audacity to label themselves as "China Gourmet" should be illegal. I came in with a big appetite, expecting "gourmet". What I received was what I consider pig slop. I couldn't even bring myself to finish the food. It's safe to say I left with a big appetite as well. If it were the food alone, I wouldn't even bother leaving a review. It was not the food alone. The service I received was straight disrespectful- there is no other word to describe it. I was treated as if they were bothered to have a customer.All in all, this has got to be the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. read more

My friends, girlfriend and I stopped by this really cool restaurant last night after checking out the cool sunset with all the storm clouds at the ocean. We were greeted by our server Sean with a huge smile. He seated us quickly and was very attentive during our whole dinner. We got to meet the owner, Mr. Chin and he kept going table to table to check on everyone. He was very funny and seemed to really care about our experience. He also took the time to explain in detail each dish. He was very passionate about the food, it's quality and expressed his happiness that we came in. We ordered quite a few dishes, including Hot & Sour soup (we all loved it and had multiple bowls), the Tangerine Chicken was meaty and crunchy with a ton of flavor, the Pao Hu Burnt Pork is definitely worth a try and my personal favorite, the Sausage Fried Rice didn't stand a chance with our group (there wasn't a speck of it left on the plate)...so good, the Lin Ko Steak came on a bed oranges and was very tasty and cooked to perfection, and the Szechwan Braised String Beans were amazing, the beans were cooked perfectly (I will definitely get them again). I must say, my group and I loved everything about this place. The music was classy and turned down low giving a very nice feeling of relaxation and we could enjoy our conversations. The whole experience was incredibly disappointing. The service and decor were ok, but the food almost inedible. I'm not sure why there are garden umbrellas inside. The chicken chow mein was flavorless, and everything tasted like it had been sitting out all day rather than being freshly prepared. The chicken in the Szechuan chicken dish was fatty chunks and extremely greasy. It felt that the chefs put little care put into the quality of the food. I was super excited to try this place out but ended up very disappointed. I ordered take out for the family and I, but none of us enjoyed it. Everything that had chicken in our order tasted very bland. The general Taos chicken was super breaded and enjoyable. We also ordered the sweet and sour chicken and when we opened the box the chicken had the sauce on the side. Like they expect us to mix it ourselves. Lastly the cashew nut shrimp tasted extremely fishy and unenjoyable. The only enjoyable part of the meal was the white rice. The food was not worth the price at all. read more

Ordered take out from this place. The Mongolian beef, the mu shu shrimp, and hot and sour soup. Everything was ok seasoned, they really make heavy use of canned veggies (baby corn, straw mushroom and bamboo). The dishes didn't seem to made with a lot of nice fresh ingredients. I've never had so much bamboo in a Mongolian beef dish. The shrimp were also soggy from over coating. This was pretty disappointing. read more

we ordered takeout online and my daughter (she's a bit extra) wanted fried rice with tofu. Since it wasn't on the menu, I ordered vegetable fried rice and added "add tofu" to the "notes" box, hoping the restaurant would get the drift. The restaurant called me a few minutes later, to explain that they use soft tofu in their dishes and that adding to fried rice would not produce a good outcome. I appreciated the feedback and changed our order to Hunan Fish. That dish, in addition to the Egg Fu Yung, were delicious! Happy to have good Chinese food closer to me. read more

We were a party of 7 and had a very enjoyable meal in the larger dining area. Service was very good and the menu we selected was excellent. We had onion pancakes, cream cheese wontons, won ton soup, hunan chicken, kung pao shrimp, sesame beef, braised eggplant, pan fried crispy noodles, Taiwanese sausage fried rice, and Shanghai steamed dumplings. Corkage is very reasonable. The restaurant recently opened in a shopping mall so there is ample parking. The decor is classic Chinese and very tasteful. First time ever coming here, and to be honest...I almost went somewhere else because of the reviews. I am SO happy I didn't. First of all, the hostess/server was incredibly warm and accommodating. The decor of the place is beautiful, and the music is so calming. Definitely a place to escape the world for a meal on your own, but also a nice place to meet a friend on a shopping day ;) The bathroom was impeccably clean, which I feel is always an indication of how clean a kitchen is. Food came fast - was piping hot, and even before then, she brought me a complimentary soup. Both the soup and my jasmine tea were delicious. For my main course, I ordered beef chow mein. Let me tell you - they did not skimp on the beef. Towards the end of my visit, a gentleman came out from the kitchen to check on me as well. We used to go to Chin's on Encinitas Blvd, but we find China Gourmet to be better quality, better experience, at approx the same price (maybe even cheaper?). Love the atmosphere. I ordered Sweet and Sour Pork (SSP) and an order of Sweet & Sour (SSS) soup. Both were very bland. The SSP sauce as well as the SSS broth, when I closed my eyes trying to describe the flavor the only thing that seemed to fit was a water downed flavor. Went here with 2 of my friends and was seated immediately, service was good, they were very attentive. The food itself was pretty disappointing, ordered the garlic chicken and had a good amount of fatty pieces as well as overly salted, ordered the slat and pepper chicken wings and it did have a shrimpy taste to it, not sure if they have separate fryers for seafood and others. Also had the cream cheese wontons and the center part was nice and creamy but the edge of the wrappers seemed like it was kind of old/stale tasting I'm not sure if the wrappers have been sitting out before being prepped and cooked.
