I'm awfully surprised with all good reviews of this place. I honestly thought it was quite terrible. The spicy pork wontons were not at all spicy and it tasted like there was peanut sauce in it. The meat inside was also a bit odd and it had a funny taste to it. Even the potstickers weren't good and had juice in them that completely burned the roof of my mouth when I bit into it. Worst of the worst, the white rice wasn't even good. It tasted old. It was dry and mushy at the same time. Honestly, I didn't expect to find this good of Chinese food in Carlsbad, so this was a really nice surprise. We started with the spicy pot, which came out bubbling hot and packed with ingredients. It had a nice kick without being overwhelming, and the flavors were rich and savory. It had a strong cumin flavor, which makes this dish pretty authentic. Get this dish with rice, the sauces goes well with it. The soup noodles with fried pork were super comforting. The broth was light but flavorful, and the fried pork added a really nice crispy texture that balanced well with the noodles. My nephew likes noodles but without alot of flavor so this dish was perfect for him. The fried dumplings were crispy on the bottom with juicy filling inside--exactly what you want. We also got the steamed chicken with chili oil, which was tender and coated in that classic fragrant, slightly spicy chili oil that adds so much flavor without being too heavy. Amazing! Father's Day early dinner (4:30pm Sunday). While most American-Chinese restaurants serve typical Cantonese-influenced cuisine or heavily westernized dishes (i.e. Beef with Broccoli, or other Panda-inspired faire), Tasty Noodle House focuses on Shanghainese appetizers, Dim Sum and fried noodles. It is a small chain with locations around SoCal. This was our first time here. We ordered: * 1 Large Asahi Bottle Beer ($10.99) * Shanghai Pan-Fried Soup Dumplings ($10.50) * Combination Fried Rice ($15.99) * Shanghai Style Chow Mein ($14.99) * Tasty Dry Pot with Lamb ($20.99) For me, the star was the Dry Pot, wow! This is similar to your typical hot pot but this has no broth. It was already slightly warm inside so a hot soup would have had us sweating. We chose dry and it was unbelievably good. Definitely getting this again. The Fried Rice and Shanghai Chow Mein fried noodles were excellent as well. Not huge plates but we managed to split it four ways. In fact all of the dishes we ordered family style so we could all share. They did not have your typical "combo" entrees that had sides of soup or rice. Here you order one big plate of fried rice, one big plate of noodles, and so on...and SHARE. We were getting full when the Shanghai Fried Soup Dumplings came out. Wow they were huge! Biggest soup dumplings I have ever seen (maybe I don't get out much?)...seriously the size of an orange. My wife and I split one large bottle of beer. They gave us two frosted glasses and the bottle split evenly. Perfect! Ice waters were really tasty too (I never comment on water but here I am). Service was excellent. In the end, we paid the bill using the handheld POS terminal. I asked for an itemized receipt and it printed it all in Chinese! Luckily ChatGPT helped me translate and the bill looked correct. Tried to get on the waitlist for another popular dumpling spot, but it was closed! I still wanted dumplings and I'm so glad we finally tried this spot closer to home. It's a sit-down casual Chinese restaurant. The service was good, they greeted us and said goodnight as we left. We ordered the vegetable dumplings, veggie chow mein, and a vegetable dish that was not usual - potato and peppers. All of it was delicious! Dumplings are mushroom and spinach and best dipped in the sauce they give you, plus add a little chili oil. The noodles were literally tasty. It has now scored number 1 in good chow mein. But don't doubt the potato dish. It is so interesting because the potato is slightly crunchy. The flavor is unique; I couldn't figure out the ingredients. Either way, we'd get this dish again. This place was poppin on Dec 23rd. Not sure if it was busy because of Christmas week or if it always is but all the tables were full, and we waited about 10 minutes to be seated. Service was ok, I'm sure they were trying their best as to how busy it was so I understand. The menu is pretty extensive. However, they have the basics and most popular items that everyone tends to order. The XLB were good. We didn't enjoy the spicy pork sesame wontons as much as a sesame flavor was very strong. Pretty solid Chinese spot overall. All kinds of classics and some fusion style dishes on the menu. Ordered Chow Meln and some dumplings. Chow Mein came out quick and was super hot and tasty. I ordered the sweet and sour pork and no where on the menu does it say there are bones in it. I bit into a piece and cracked my tooth in half! Didn't realize it until my kids and I left and got in the car and looked in the mirror. I called and asked to speak to the manager and was told they are not there today. The Shanghai style chow mein with thick noodle is my go to. It has a nice deep flavor. Nice smoky wok taste. Love the variety of textures too with the meat and bite of the veggies. The black pepper beef with peppers is also super tasty but it's a hit or miss because sometimes the meat is super tender but other times it's tough and chewy so I stopped getting it as often. The flavor is amazing though. Another thing to try is the spicy sesame wonton it tastes like normal spicy wontons but mixed with like thai peanut sauce dip which is a unique combo but it works. Arrived at around 8 pm. They ran out of high chairs so we were provided with a booster seat instead. When it was available, they did make sure to switch it out. We were in town on a family trip, craving something hot for dinner and found Tasty Noodle House. Noodles are my carb of choice so I was extra happy. We were greeted warmly upon entering, and quickly seated and provided water. I ordered the beef noodle soup, my kids ordered the chow mein and my husband ordered the black pepper beef noodles. The last two dishes came out really quickly, and my beef noodle soup came minutes later. The food was really good--noodles had a good amount of chewiness and the beef noodle soup really hit the spot. I grew up in Taiwan so this dish is really nostalgic for me. My husband wanted his dish more peppery, so he had to doctor it up, but my kids devoured their noodles like there was no tomorrow. I was thinking 10% chives is all we need for it to be good. The soup dumplings were really good though so I was happy with that. I just love dumplings. I crave them. I do a little dance when I'm eating them. I have traveled to other countries to eat them. Housed on the outer layer of the Shoppes at Carlsbad, Tasty Noodle house, which I have frequented on Convoy, is a staple for Shanghainese cuisine. We ate on the patio for lunch and the service was attentive and not over bearing. We had the Xiao Long Bao and the Shanghai Grilled Pork Bun (sheng jian bao) both With pork. So delicious. I could have eaten an additional Order of the soup dumplings all by myself. The Shanghai grilled pork buns have a much thicker wrapper but have that nice crispiness to the bottom. I can only have like two of them before it's too much dough but The inside is so flavorful though. Would get both again. We also had the Steamed Chicken w/ Spicy Sesame Sauce, which is a cold chicken dish but still so flavorful though. The House Spicy Chow Mein with beef is also a solid choice and although not crazy spicy, the little spice is there and so good. Overall this spot lives up to its name of Tasty. The food here is unmatched. One of the best Chinese food spots I've ever been to. The dishes are all flavorful and homemade. Arrived in the afternoon on a weekend, missing the lunch and dinner rush hour. We were immediately seated and there were only a couple of tables occupied. Menus were already pre placed on each table so you can sit down and immediately browse the available dish choices. I went with the usual simple comfort foods for a quick meal and didn't venture out too far. Tried the sauteed garlic seasonal greens (#137 $15.99), Shanghai veggie and pork wonton soup ($12.50), beef chow mein thick noodles ($14.99), garlic spinach ($15.99), crispy fish fillet with seaweed ($18.50). Disappointed that the wonton soup was plain soup, when I had gotten it in Irvine, the soup was milky. When asked, they said I have to order it with bone broth otherwise it comes with regular clear soup. So now you know. Ask for bone broth if you want a heartier soup with more depth. We ordered their recommended seafood and crab sauce noodle and some XLBs. The seafood and crab noodle was not tasty - the noodles were incredibly sticky and clumped together, the crab sauce was thick and oily without much flavor, and the seafood was a variety of frozen items, like mussels, tiny scallops, etc. The XLB were some of the worst we've had in a while. First of all, they took well over 25 minutes to come out. We were basically done with our meal before they arrived, and our server kept coming by to tell us "oh just a few more minutes." Secondly, they were incredibly doughy to the point where we had to bite off the tops and spit them out. Lastly, the filling was flavored too heavily and with too much salt. Normally when I try a new place and have a less than average experience, I try to give them the benefit of the doubt and pass off the visit as my poor or limited choices from the menu or just the restaurant having a bad day. However, in this case, I have to state outright that I am never coming back to Tasty Noodle House. Oh, man ... where do I start? LONG rant incoming. First off, I was excited to come here. Over the last year, a number of dumpling and noodle spots have popped up around north county. With a daughter that loves noodles and a son that loves dumplings, eating at any of them is both a safe and delicious bet. So, when going over spots on the mall to have dinner with the kids and their grandma, Tasty Noodle House was the obvious choice. Looking over their menu here on Yelp, I had a good idea of what we could all order and enjoy. For my son and myself, I ordered the Chive Shrimp and Pork Dumplings. They didn't serve these at this location. I then tried to order the Crab Meat and Pork Xiao Long Bao. They didn't serve those at this location either. For my daughter, off the Chef's Specials Menu, I ordered the Tasty Cold Noodles. They didn't serve those at this location. Exasperated, I opted for the Crispy Spicy Stinky Tofu with Pork for myself. And, you guessed it ... they don't serve this at this location either. At this point, my mother joked that I should just ask them what they actually did serve here to make things quicker. Talking with the server, I learned that they don't actually make any of the dumplings on site. They are made at a central location and shipped out to the Tasty Noodle franchises in the area. And, for some reason, shellfish dumplings are not shipped and reheated at their Carlsbad Mall location. This was surprising as the kitchen seemed fairly large and every other dumpling spot we've been too usually has a small counter area where they showcase Xiao Long Bao being made in-shop. But, not at Tasty Noodle House! They didn't make Stinky Tofu because some diners complained about the smell. Normally, most noodle shops don't worry about the smells when they're cooking with exceedingly pungent ingredients like garlic, ginger, fish sauce, and oyster sauce pretty regularly that are going to come out and taste amazing in the end. But, not at Tasty Noodle House! And usually when a shop goes out of their way to make a "Chef's Specials Menu", especially one with a limited selection of choices, they actually make and serve them when ordered. But, not at Tasty Noodle House! So, what did we have to settle for? I had the Cilantro Fish Dumplings. The white fish inside was bland and the cilantro lost all of its freshness from the steaming. The end result was soggy, an odd mix of fishy and earthy aromas, and overall unappealing. We also had the Shangai Xiao Long Bao with Pork. These were okay, but not as flavorful as most other places and definitely not what we were hoping for. My son had the Seafood in Crab Meat Sauce Noodle. He freaked out, as 12 year olds do, because there were peas and carrots in the bowl that were not disclosed on the menu. There was still a nice selection of seafood in the bowl with the mussels being fairly well cooked in my opinion. But, the noodles themselves were placed in the bowl in a folded, rectangular shape that gave me the distinct impression that they came from a Top Ramen-esque packet, steamed slightly, and served. They were clumpy, overly starchy, and didn't separate cleanly in the broth like you'd want or expect. He pushed the bowl away after a few bites and my daughter ended up eating the noodles while I had some of the fish and broth. My mother and daughter split an order of the Orange Chicken. The chicken was breaded nicely, very crispy, and the sauce wasn't too sweet and with a nice amount of edible rind. This was honestly pretty good. Still, it says something about the quality of service and food at a Noodle House where the best thing on the menu is something that you can get any dive Chinese take-out spot. Looking back, I am still amazed at how poor our experience was. It's not often I have such high expectations that are so thoroughly crushed. And I can honestly say that I don't have any real drive to go to any other of their shops to try again. With a mixture of average to subpar food, signature dishes that are made off-site and shipped in, and such a disappointing selection of food on the menu that was not even served here ... We walked by this restaurant and decided to give it a try in a busy Friday night. It's on the outer skirts of the Carlsbad Shoppes next to the old Islands. Service was friendly and fast. [[HIGHLIGHT]]And the restaurant itself was simply decorated but clean and open which made it very comfortable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were lucky and got in right before the dinner rush. We ordered the Brisket Noodle Soup based on the server's recommendation, and the cumin lamb (side of rice is extra), and the salt and pepper mushrooms. All three dishes were great! The soup had a slight tongue numbing affect which I think may be Szechuan peppercorn. It wasn't overwhelming but pleasant if you like spicy food. The broth itself could have been a bit hotter in temperature but overall an 8/10 for us. The lamb was very flavorful and the mushrooms were fried to a perfect crisp. This is definitely going to be one in our list to come back to. They served authentic Shanghai cuisine and we recognized a lot of well known comfort dishes as well. read more
