Weird to say, but first impression was very good because of "friendly staff". We all know that we don't expect any small talk experience from chinese restaurants, but when we entered..... the staff talked to my sons in a very friendly way, and we had a short talk. I felt like this restaurant would be good. We ordered walnut shrimp, pork fried rice, and chop suey house. Oh my, walnut shrimp was the best ever. It was very tasty so my son, my sister, my niece all enjoyed it. Fried rice was very good too. I was not sure to put pork in fried rice in chinese restaurant(they do less marinading to remove smell culturally, from what i have seen) but no smell at all and very tender. Chop suey was not special. It is good, but not impressive as much as other two dishes. Service was very good and fast as well. They also gave lucky fortune cookies for my son(two cookies in a bag). ATTN Staff and management Would it give it zero stars if I could. Our large party went in during lunchtime, around 1 on Sunday, and ordered several plates based on the lunchtime menu. To be clear, we said specifically we wanted the lunchtime pricing and portion and were given several small plates. Service was slow and not good in general, and no table was available for our children (they had to eat at a separate table, ages 6-9) and service at Chins is usually pretty lackluster-the food is what usually keeps us coming back. When it came time to the bill the waitress announced that she would be charging everyone for the dinner portions. She already seemed irritated at that point so we didn't argue it, instead we left a smaller tip. After they got the bill we got berated in front of the restaurant for the small tip despite being overcharged for the food. The manager then came out and recommended we go to china fusion instead (you can see that they wrote it on the takeout box as well) Overall a hilarious experience but seriously a terrible experience where we got taken advantage of and insulted. I'd leave a $0 if it was possible but it felt more appropriate to leave a small one. Won't be going back again. read more

I think this is the best Chinese restaurant around. The food is always delicious, hot and fresh! Love me some hot and sour soup! I try to circle through the menu to get a taste of everything. So far, nothing has disappointed. Some of my favorites are the Tangerine chicken and the Mongolian beef. The Moo Shi Beef is also fantastic and I consider it "fun food" since you can make little Chinese tacos or burritos. The service is always excellent and friendly. Parking at this location is easy. Great portion of shrimp but few walnuts. Tasted great Rice not good. Soup way over the top hot, took 30 mins to be able to finally eat it. Beef lo Mien was over over cooked. The noodles were mushy, fell apart. So gross. The house named egg rolls that were thin seemed they'd be delicious in restaurants but soggy with delivery. But sincerely I think they'd be delicious in restaurants in the moment. Everything was well packaged and they sent what we asked. We will repeat. God, I'm getting old. Alright, let me start this by saying that Chin's is fine. It's just like every other average Chinese restaurant out there and that's ... that really is just fine. But, that's not what I want when I come here. I don't want the same Americanized dishes you can get at any dive on any street, I want the food I grew up with from Chin's Szechwan. 40 years ago, while wandering the Carlsbad Village Fair with my mother and father, we came upon a stand on Madison Avenue serving three dishes at a quaint little restaurant in downtown. They had Spicy Honey Chicken, large chunks of breast meat fried in a soft, puffy breading before being coated in a vibrantly golden sauce and tossed with thin and chewy rice noodles. They had Plum Tree Beef, thin strips of soft meat fried until crispy, and served in bright red sauce that was sickly sweet with hints of spicy heat underneath. And they had Pao Hu (Hot Burned Pork), solid chunks of pork seared down until they were slightly dried and smoky before being served in a lightly sweet sauce and tossed with crushed peanuts and crumbled bits of fried wonton skins. They also had Kung Pow Chicken, but I don't talk about that when I tell this story. Anyway, I had had Chinese food multiple times already in my short life at that point, but these dishes were unlike anything I had ever had before. They were beautiful to look at, a joy to eat, and something to look forward to anytime it was suggested we go out to Chin's to eat. Other dishes there were also very good, but these star dishes were almost always on the table whenever we came here. Now, all three of those are gone. Instead of Spicy Honey Chicken, they have Honey Sesame Chicken (which even the menu will tell you it's basically just orange chicken), duller and more brownish-orange in color, and without dry noodles that used to elevate the dish. Instead of Plum Tree Beef, they have Tangerine Beef, which is smokier and not as sweet. Instead of Hot Burned Pork they have ... nothing, I think the Shanghai Crispy Pork was the closest substitute and the description didn't even come close. Again, don't get me wrong, the food we ordered was ... good, it's just the same kind of food, with that same kind of restaurant quality, we could get at any of 100 other Chinese spots we've been to in San Diego. I guess it was bound to happen, after 40 years it became too difficult to stand out, and now Chin's Szechwan has receded back into the pack with all of the others in a wide and boring field. read more

I placed a large catering order for a corporate event at this Chin's and had a wonderful experience. They do their catering delivery through EZcater so you'll have to place your order through the third party, but don't hesitate to reach out to Chin's directly to discuss your order first. They were able to modify the delivery time to deliver my order a bit earlier than their usual delivery window which I really appreciated. Additionally, they also let me know in advance that they would be including complimentary rice to my order so I didn't have to order any. And they also offered to include some take out boxes to pack leftovers! And leftovers there were aplenty. They were very generous with their portions and we ended up with probably an extra 15% more than I initially accounted for, including tons of the complimentary rice. They also included extras like fortune cookies, plates, utensils, napkins, multiple different types of sauces, etc. The food was all delicious and cooked well, even at the large scale we placed (think 26 trays of food). We ordered the spicy honey & sesame chicken, beef & szechewan string beans, tofu in brown sauce, chicken low mein, tofu lo mein, and shanghai egg rolls. I was worried about the spiciness of some of the entrees, but it was very pleasant and not very spicy at all. The chicken was the most popular but people had great things to say about all the dishes. Most of the attendant were smiling and friendly. They were very attentive in our table refilling our water, teas and rice. The entrees and appetizers we ordered were very reasonable. The Walnut shrimp was cooked well. Not overcooked . Very tender. The garlic eggplant and stir fried green beans were very delicious. The crispy Szechwan pork was so good. The combination chow mein was my favorite. Very soft and tasty. The spicy tangerine chicken was delicious. The sauce was spot on. The crispy chicken popcorn was a hit to the kids. This place hits the spot when you're craving some Chinese food! Their menu can look so a bit intimidating since there's so much going on but it's all delicious. The place is really clean with a wonderful atmosphere, a bit dim at night but it felt relaxing. Staff were really friendly and quick and on top of their service! Was able to get seated immediately for dinner but got pretty busy right after. The food was really delicious! My pictures don't do it justice because of the lighting or maybe I was just too impatient and couldn't wait to eat. Hunan Fish fillets and Crispy Pork were my favorite! I have been really trying to find a good Chinese place. Not many these days stand out. I can go to San Diego of course but I live here. The food is very good. S&S Chicken is excellent and the Chop Suey Chicken was really good and fresh. Loved it. Nice flavor with all of it. Service was excellent despite getting take-out. Will come again for sure. I got the string beans, vegetable fried rice, and chicken & broccoli in brown sauce. The string beans were so soggy, the fried rice was too salty, and the chicken dish was overcooked. Fast service! The food was really tasty. The potstickers were so fluffy and flavorful! They do spice so well! Got spicy #4 and it was SPICY loved it! I do think 5 would be way too much for me.
