We loved the awesome view of the lake, and the patio is a perfect place to sit and relax with 2 chairs & a firepit. We were a late check-in and someone called us before we arrived, to give us information on getting into the cabin, parking and general instructions. Friday night was pretty quiet. Saturday night we could hear some good music playing from the restaurant patio. It was loud enough to hear from inside our room, but by no means bothersome. We enjoyed the vibe. By about 9:30ish, we noticed the music had stopped and it was back to silence. Our trip was cut short for personal reasons, but we'll definitely stay here any chance we get.

The beds are very comfortable and the cabins come equipped with some amenities, plenty of towels and blankets and very high quality linens which is unexpected in a cozy cabin. Each cabin has a theme, we were in the Bear Cabin which is cabin 19, and our friends were in the Eagle cabin. All the cabins have lovely lake views and front porches - perfect for watching the time pass while enjoying the incredible view. Ours is not right on the lake but up the hill so you can still see the view from your windows and front porch. Very quiet, serene and peaceful. There is a general store and restaurant on-sight - making it a very convenient place to stay in a pretty quiet area. We ate at the restaurant and thought it was quite good (wrote a separate review of that). I am only giving the property four stars because there were a couple areas that I think could be improved but it was nothing we felt we had to tell the staff. Again, we were very happy with the place. Overall, the cleanliness of the cabin could be improved. Seems like the porch hadn't been hosed down in ages and was full of dust and cobwebs. The floor also didn't seem like it had been cleaned very well. I'll give some leeway here as the area was quite dusty after a dry summer. There was a giant cobweb insight the bathroom window which was a little unsettling. Also to note, the beach area closest to the resort seems to be very popular for locals on Saturdays so it got crowded. Obviously they can't control that, but wanted to mention here for your plans if you stay. You will need to get space early. Overall, would recommend this cute resort with very cozy cabins for a mountain getaway. We didn't get a chance to explore the area - it was very hot so we spent our time at the lake. We'd like to come back in the fall and do more exploring.

The rooms are bare-bones, but the place has a honey and rustic feel to it. On this trip, they didn't have a room available for all nights, so we had to move from the hotel to a cabin during our stay. We arrived after hours , so we had an envelope and a key to check in. We dropped off the key and the envelope in the slot , the next morning and went skiing. Became home at the end of the day, met the girl in the office to get our key to the cabin for the night. She greeted us warmly and asked if it was our first time staying there. Ummm, no? Not only do we have customer records 5 years long.But we literally just stayed last night. The cabin we stayed in had no heat! Let me clarify, the heater will work, but you have to go into the closet and flip breakers. And the heater is either ON FULL blast , or OFF with the breaker flipped, and it becomes sub-zero inside. As in 22 degrees in the morning, matching the outdoor temperature. We had to call the office twice in the evening before they sent the guy to come and fix it. We left a long letter in the morning about this, but never heard anything.

It's advisable to go earlier rather than later because they might run out of the entree you want. They make stuff fresh daily, so that's a danger. The hardworking server managed the front end solo. She did a good job. My 1/2 lb bison burger patty was cooked to delicious perfection. Having a non-dehydrated meal after an 8- day BP trip was a treat. Having this bison burger meal with the option of 2 side dishes was heavenly. No, potato fries wasn't one of the choices. I did choose the asparagus and zucchini cooked in marinara sauce and the restuffed baked half potato. This was an exceptional meal that was almost too big for me to finish, but I managed! The bison meat was flavorful and had not the slightest greasy quality about it. Getting meals of this quality when far off the beaten track is a delightful expectation when at Mono Hot Springs. You would be hard-pressed to find a meal this good in the towns further down the mountain.

Resort review: I drove up there to drop off another hiker that was supposed to start the journey but contracted COVID just before star that was joining my wife for the rest of the John Muir trail, and spend the night with my wife in a room with a bed, toilet., and shower, before she got back on the trail. The place is what I like; a civilized retreat that is far from civilization and has all the basic amenities that one would need to enjoy some peaceful rest, relaxation, day hikes, sitting around the fire, and fishing. The Room are very basic, and trust me, it's a gem to the hikers, and a basic room to those not trough-hiking. I say; who cares, its warm, has indoor plumbing with shower, heating, electric lights and outlets to charge your electronic junk, a little convenience kitchen, chairs, tables and night-stands. This is the best of a soul-enriching retreat that you don't have to hike miles to get to, and drive to {make sure you have some clearance underneath the vehicle)- soccer mom van did it fine, sports car would not be choice. I would bring my truck, but would also consider my Ford Mach-E EV, asking prior about charging it back up at the resort. The atmosphere was electrified with all the John Muir trail hikers that were coming in to pick up their re-supply of backpacking food and other supplies that they had mailed up to Vermillion Valley Resort (VVR) previously - what a great service! The hikers were so happy to be able to resupply on a little bit of civilization, that was still way away from "the rat race", and have a brief respite from the tent, camp stove, filtering water, and making sure of good foot and body hygiene. For those that did not reserve a room, there was still laundry machines available, showers, backpacking re-supplies, and of course very tasty n filling café food.The kitchen serves great home-cooked comfort food that really appeals to the hiking crowd, and to myself as I just love it. Many of the hikers knew each other from the trail and I felt excitement that comes from the hikers who saw and made friends together on-trail: they had lots of catching up to do, and a bit more time to do so-precious. The free camping area for tents was super-cool! As for my experience, I relished that I could bring a wonderful feast of King Crab, steak, Caesar salad, fresh asparagus (from the Fresno Costco on my way up) my wife and her hiking friends without a big detour for them. It was so perfect, and the staff was perfect at accommodating needs, like the magician Priscilla. Without any reasonable cause, he approached our group at 12 noon and abruptly demanded that we turn off our music, which was neither loud nor disruptive. What made this worse was that other campsites were playing their music at much higher volumes, yet he chose to ignore them and single out our group. The situation escalated later that evening, around 8 PM, when our family was simply sharing stories and enjoying time around the campfire. The same host barged into our site and declared that we were "getting loud," warning us to quiet down and threatening to return "or else." Meanwhile, other campsites were openly showing movies and running loud sound systems without any intervention. This selective enforcement felt malicious, discriminatory, and completely unprofessional. No paying guest should ever feel targeted or treated unfairly, especially when others are allowed to do the very things we were reprimanded for. To make matters worse, the water service was never restored for the entire duration of our stay, an unacceptable inconvenience on top of everything else. Our group, along with our friends and family, will not be returning to Rancheria Campground. Beautiful scenery cannot make up for hostile treatment and inconsistent, disrespectful customer service.
