the food here is unedible and very low quality. ordered the singapore mei fun and it was not only ridiculously over seasoned, and i don't mean spicy, it also had flat globs of pieces stuck together and something in it resembling meat, but it certainly woulndt qualify. steamed dumplings also gross. unreal so many people still frequent this place, its obvious the owners don't care about the quality of food at all. great dragon buffet is far better, and same price with more menu options. i don't think this place is following proper guidelines with food quality, and someday a citizen is going to suffer a major health issue from eating here. read more

We try to make China Star a place to eat when we visit St. Cloud. It was recommended to us by locals because of their variety and good food. Our personal two favorites are the sweet and sour chicken and peanut butter chicken. They also serve a variety of shrimp - shrimp cocktail, fried and coconut. I travel a lot, so I eat at many different Chinese buffets. This was middle of the road. So-so. Not much selection. Though most of my favorites were there. The food was ok. The price was good for what it was. The bathrooms seemed to be regularly cleaned, but not very well. I was impressed by the way management handled maintenance. It seems when something breaks, they just put a sign on it. Front door broke, no problem. Just have a sign telling people enter the side door. Toilet broke, no problem. I've been here two times in the past month and had previously never been there before. I went with my 10 year old daughter and she was so excited. The first time was good, food was decent, the staff was friendly. It's your typical buffet food though, some things are over cooked and some things are dry etc, but still pretty good. The second time we went in, my daughter was still super impressed but I noticed right away that the restaurant smelled kind of musty. I mean as you are there for awhile you don't really notice it anymore, but the food wasn't as good either. Still had great service and will probably go back again. Worst customer service I have ever experienced. I was going to get a to go meal, but the lady who refills the buffet was so rude! I asked for two different items that were out on the buffet. She said it's in the back. She proceeded to go to the back THREE separate times and brings out SIX different things! None of which is what I asked for! I'm the only at the buffet! Been here before and it was good. This time not so good. It was 1:30 in the afternoon and there was still plenty of people in here, but some of the buffet items had been in the steam tables for awhile. No white rice, both the soups were very oily . The rest of the food was just OK -- the seafood legs were nasty, as very rubbery. Shrimp was good until I got a fishy tasting one - then I did not want that so got a new plate. Noodles were the best thing, I suppose it is hard to mess those up. I am sure I will be back as 2 out of 3 of my kids are a fan -I wonder if they still let you order from the menu - that would be the best to get hot fresh food. read more

I ordered Kung Pao Shrimp and what I received was a dish with dime sized shrimp-like tidbits in it. They had to be some of the smallest shrimp ever and the flavor was not good at all. My order was "to go" and most of the container was filled with vegetables and horrible tasting yellow rice. Maybe I chose the wrong dish but after a few bites it went in the trash. Anyone rating this establishment with more than 2 stars must have limited Chinese food experience or are related to the owners. The drinks are ridiculously high as well. We have driven past this place at least once a year on a 5 hour trip from ND to southern MN. We stopped here for the first time on Memorial Day. First, I'd LOVE to report that we were only charged the normal weekday lunch rate, not some overinflated special "holiday" rate. KUDO's here for sure! First, let me say, getting into the place was a challenge, not being from St. Cloud/Waite Park. We know the area good enough (in it 1-2 times a year for 15 years), but don't stray too far from Division St. However heading west over the bridge, then trying to figure out how to get in was a bit of a challenge. 2 mins later we finally made it in the lot. Then, it got a bit confusing to find the right door to enter (past signed and locked doors), then up another ramp inside to the real entrance. Upon leaving as well, it was disorienting to discover where you should exit. They could do some simple remodeling to make that a better experience, but understand for ADA requirements why they probably have it set up as they do since they are really on the second floor. Overall the food was good. Typical midwest Chinese buffet style. On the positive front, I didn't find any hard/dry/unchewable chicken in any dishes as is typical at the lower priced places. Almost everything was quite warm, and there were a few different dishes than what we typically see up in Fargo. I was happy that there was a few spicier things instead of blanded-down for midwest pallets, but again it was pretty typical for the area. The drink prices were a bit high, around two and a half dollars if I remember right. My 7 yr old ordered a chocolate milk and instead of being brought a 6-8 ounce carton/glass, he was served it in a whopping 20? ounce soda glass. He only could finish about half of it. Thanks for the extra milk, but such a shame to have to throw out half of it when they can't drink it all. A suggestion would be to provide a smaller glass for children, with 1 free refill instead. It will cost you less and take no more time than a water refill. We will return some time in the future, if we end up rolling through at lunch time, but usually we're closer to Alexandria and just hit fast food instead, but will remember this place just in case. read more

The China Star Buffet is on the 1st level in a corner building. Its a rather small place, but mirrors on the back walls make the room appear larger. The selections on the buffet are a variety of stir-fries, sweet dishes and pastries. Nothing too outlandish for the American taste buds. More what someone may expect, including pizza some other dishes. The food was surprisingly tasty and was nice displayed. We got ourselves a second and third plate. For drink you have to ask for refills. Coffee for lunch only. The servers were fast and efficient, but didnt speak much english and mostly talked in chinese to each other. Soon it got full and loud. But its worth the effort. If we feel eating Chinese again, we get back. Tip: arrive early, to get a place. read more
