I've been here twice and the food is super phenomenal. The naan, the malai kofta in particular. The ambiance is lovely. The music is fun, the pictures are great. But honestly the part that is best is I've been here twice with kids who are under a year and the staff is understanding, friendly, kind and interactive. Went there on a Saturday around 1:30 PM. Expected a buffet - there was none. Two customers n the place. Sat down - it was freezing cold in htere - ACV was blasting. So we sat at our table for 15 minutes - had a water - no waiter - just sit in the cold and wait for somebody to come. I had enough of that - we went to another restaurant. Very good. I ordered delivery from here for dinner during a recent work trip to St. Cloud. I got my usual: samosas, saag paneer, and garlic naan. Firstly, I couldn't believe how cheap everything was but maybe that's because I don't usually order for just myself. The food came pretty quickly and was wrapped to minimize spillage. Everything was piping hot. The samosas were large, fluffy, pillows of heaven. The saag was really tasty. The naan was good. Everything was really enjoyable. I ordered medium spiciness thinking I was a bad ass white bitch but even that was just a touch too hot for me. I guess my spice tolerance isn't as impressive as I thought.. I love the food here; it's very good! It is a little on the pricey side (in my opinion, but what isn't?) and you buy most items a la carte. I'm not sure how to spell or pronounce her name but our server, Meeta?, sweet young lady, she has waited on me at this location and Kohinoor downtown. Great recommendations, efficient, friendly, she is a 10 out of 10. Today my friend and I enjoyed the Balti- I chose lamb, shrimp and mushroom. My friend had the chicken, shrimp and mushroom. Took a detour while traveling from Fargo to Minneapolis in June to try the Star of India restaurant recommended by my daughter. I was not disappointed. Well worth going into Saint Cloud for a meal. We were greeted at the door and promptly seated. The staff was very friendly and took the time to chat briefly throughout the meal. The decor was nice, the lighting illuminated your table so you felt like you were the only patrons. The Chicken Biryani was the best I have ever tasted. It was spiced perfectly with just enough heat to keep me wanting another bite. The garlic naan was perfect, crispy outside and tender with no cilantro! This small strip mall restaurant offers a diverse menu that range from vegan to surf and turf. The Alu Tikki and naan are deeply flavorful starters. The vegetable samosas have a perfect balance between crispy, tender, and filling. My favorite dish is the Alu Gobi, potatoes and cauliflower in a spicy red sauce. It's $15 which gets you a modest portion of the entree with a generous plate of jasmine rice. If I have one piece of feedback it's that some time the air conditioning makes it too cold for me to enjoy my meal. Also, be careful when they ask you what spice level you want. Unless you like French kissing the sun, I'd keep it in the mild to medium range. The service is good. You're greeted and sat quickly. The food is timely. And the bill always feels fair. This restaurant experience says high end, the hospitality says welcome home, and the prices leave room for desert. Amazing array of flavors and heat tailor made to your liking. We decided to try Star of India while traveling to St. Cloud. The restaurant is located in a shopping center so there is plenty of parking. The restaurant is medium size offering table and booth seating. The servers were friendly and offered some great suggestions on the menu. We started with the bread basket with three different bread choices - I loved the flat bread with raisins. There is a nice menu and I had the Shahi korma and the chicken palak both dishes were spiced to our liking and were very delicious. Some of the best Indian food I have had the pleasure to try. It's one of the places I sadly forget about from time to time, but it shouldn't be. Star has some of the most authentic and delicious food in town, and is only one of two Indian restaurants in the area. If you aren't sure what you want, there is a reasonably priced buffet each day to help you decide. Staff are very attentive to their customers, friendly and polite. There is a full bar for those desirous of adult drinks, and often there are specials that add to an already enjoyable experience. I highly recommend the garlic naan. It's so light and flavorful, I am pretty I'd be fine just eating heaps of it for my meal. Most dishes you can customize with your choice of protein, as well as spice level. Be forewarned that hot and above is going to have some kick. There are a lot of dishes to choose from, including vegetarian, which the menu conveniently describes for you. I have ordered here before many times and never had a problem with their food or their service, quite the opposite. However, tonight I placed an order for takeout and had the worst customer service experience. I had ordered mild no spice because I was feeding nine children, my receipt said mild, but the food was very clear clearly at least a medium or higher in spice. I have been eating Indian food all of my life and I know the difference between a zero and a 10 or mild and spicy. Even the adults were having a hard time with the spice level. They also forgot to pack part of our order which included raita (that would've helped cool down the spice level) and trust me we love our raita in this house and my kids basically drink it. So it was clear and obvious that it was missing. When I called not only did I get push back but they wanted me to bring in all of my food that I had ordered, which by this time 3/4 of it was already plated and kids were crying because it was too spicy to eat. We brought in the remaining food that had not been plated to show them how spicy the "mild" they sent home with us. We only asked that they remake the food to be mild, and they refused to remake the food, nor did they send us home with the food they forgot to put in our original order. Indian food is not cheap, it was a waste of $130 since no one was able to eat the food they sent us. I do not recommend eating at this restaurant purely because of the customer service we received when they were in fact the ones who made a mistake and messed up our order. A refund was out of the picture, all we wanted was mild food for the kids to eat. They accused us of trying to scam them into free food. The only scam is this restaurant not owning up to their mistakes. read more

Campy and dated interior with friendly service and delightful Indian music. We did not care for the paper table covers. This is our first visit and we always try the Chicken Tikka Masala with Naan. It was missing a certain spice and was a little too much tomato taste. The chicken pieces were very good. The Naan (bread) was fantastic. I've heard a lot of good things about this place and I'm glad I was finally able to try it. I went here on a Friday night with a group of 7 friends and we were seated right away. It wasn't as big as I was expecting but is cozy. The staff was very welcoming. The food came our promptly and I like that you can decide on the level of spice. I went with hot and it was perfect. I opted for a vegetarian dish with chick peas and I can't remember the name of it. I only wish the dish was bigger. Everyone in my group loved their food. I wish there was an option to get a sampling tray or something where you can try a couple things. That would have been nice for our group to share. We lingered for a long time after our meal and the staff was so friendly. We were all given separate checks without even asking which was really nice. It was rather chilly inside but that was probably just my preference. I look forward to going back again and trying a different dish. read more

After finding a hair sticking out of my food this kind of left me no choice but to give them one star. I do not understand why none of the employees I seen coming out of the kitchen had hair nets on. I can tolerate a lot of things but not someone's hair in my food, and for that I can never return to this establishment. Had it not been for the hair we probably would have had a good run, because everything else was perfect the first visit. I suggest you make sure all kitchen personnel has hair nets on, that way there isn't room for error. read more

The lunch buffet offers an excellent opportunity to try their food. The food options on the buffet tend to cycle. However there is always something excellent to try. Among today's (Monday) options were chicken tikki masala (amazing), saag (to dir for), curry chicken, along with their staples (rice, dal, Naan, salad, and a fried veggie side). This was the first time we have ever had subpar service. Our waiter, someone I have never seen before, was impatient and dismissive. This is the only time, out of many, where I've encountered anything but excellent customer service. As such, it is not factoring into my review. I highly recommend. According to my Indian friends who I brought to Star of India for dinner last week, this place earns a 6/10 for authenticity. They said the atmosphere was a 8/10, but the food could have been more authentic (although this could be attributed to resources for food, not the cooking itself). Didn't think the best Indian food I would have in MN would be in St. Cloud!! We came for takeout on a snowy evening. The food took just about 30 minutes as promised, and was piping hot and ready just as we arrived. We ordered the garlic naan and the curry pakora. The dish came with plenty of buttery jeera rice as well. The portion size was pretty good--along with the naan it was a hearty meal for the two of us. The flavors were super spot on, and it definitely wasn't a watered down/bland version of Indian food to please Minnesotans palates. We even asked for it "hot" and it was truly spicy.
