China Star is my favorite Chinese restaurant. Their food is consistently good and always fresh. Very quick service. Their wonton soup is our household's cure-all. Sick? Soup. Bad day? Soup. Good day? Soup. China Star's food also is always packed well and still very hot even when it arrives through Doordash.

Despite the owner badgering me for not selecting my type of soup on the order form, there is NOWHERE to select it.

I am appalled by the experience we had as patrons of this business. So naturally, I came to yelp to share my cautionary tale. My boyfriend and I are self-proclaimed foodies and have frequented a wide variety of establishments in the greater Central Florida area, but never have I been treated with such disrespect and combativeness as I was at China Star. Please, order at your own risk. I will never spend my hard-earned money here again and I recommend that you follow suit. Here's why: Last weekend, much to our delight, my boyfriend and I realized that China Star delivered to our home! We previously thought Lee's Palace was the only place for Chinese delivery in our area and were happy to have a second option. We ordered online with ease and the food arrived ahead of the estimated delivery time. So far, so good! The issue began when we realized that the soups included with our combination platters were not in the bag. I'll be honest--the only reason I wanted Chinese delivery was to get my hands on a hot bowl of wonton, so I was super disappointed. I called the restaurant to allow them to right this wrong and was absolutely disgusted by the behavior that ensued. I explained our predicament to the gentleman (I use that term VERY LOOSELY) who answered the phone, I presume the owner by the way in which he spoke with authority on the subject. He explained that they did not give us soups because we did not indicate on the online order which type of soup we wanted. He stated that it was our fault because we didn't choose an option for soup (SPOILER ALERT: There is NO option to choose a soup on the order form - photos attached for proof). I politely asked him why they didn't call us and he was outraged by the suggestion--"WE NO CALL CUSTOMER!" I responded that I did not understand why they wouldn't call us, but that's fine, could they just send someone over with the soups now? With an abundance of attitude, he responded that it would take 45 mins to an hour, clearly trying to dissuade me from requesting my soups, which we paid for. I told him that it would be fine and we would wait. I think this upset him even more and he went on a tirade about how if it was the restaurants fault they would have them to us in 5 minutes, but it wasn't their fault, it was ours because we don't know how to order correctly (read: you stupid people don't deserve soup). Attempting to reason with him, I asked him if the soup was included with the price of the meal and he confirmed that it was, so I said that we wanted the soups that we paid for. He conceded that they would credit us on a future order for the soups. Perhaps if I'd accepted, that would have been the end of things, but I've been in this situation before where the restaurant offers you a credit with nothing in writing and when you try to cash it in, they suddenly don't know what you're talking about. Furthermore, this person had been YELLING at me and berating me for the past 5 minutes, so frankly, I had no desire to place a future order. I told him as much. Very calmly and politely I said, "sir, I do not want to order from you in the future if this is how you treat your customers. Please deliver our soups or you can credit them back to the card that we paid with today." HE LOST IT. I am paraphrasing, but it was something along these lines: "EXCUSE ME, NO. NO, YOU DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO. I DON'T CARE IF YOU DON'T ORDER HERE AGAIN!!!" followed by a continuous stream of yelling, again, about how it is our fault because we can't figure out the right way to order. I quietly interrupted 2-3 times with, "sir, please stop yelling at me." The look on my boyfriend's face was priceless as he watched me calmly get screamed at on the phone and called out "there was no option for soup!" in the background. After several minutes of abuse from this business owner, I said, "you know what? You can keep my money and you can keep the soups but I will be writing a review about your business and how you treated me." So here I am and here it is. The way this person spoke to me was completely unacceptable, regardless of whether or not we made a mistake on the order. The outrageous-ness of his behavior is compounded by the fact that HE was wrong and there is no way to select soup on the website, despite it clearly being included on the combination meal selections. He could have approached this in so many other ways. He could have called us to confirm what we wanted. He could have offered to refund us or send the soups to us. Even if he was certain we were wrong, he could have spoken to me with respect. He didn't do any of those things. Do you really want to spend your money at an establishment that condones this type of behavior?

Upfront disclaimers: I've only eaten here once; I rate places against other places of their type, so a five star rating for a sandwich shop, for example, is possible. There aren't a lot of food choices near Seminole State College's Sanford/Lake Mary campus. This tiny Chinese takeout is in a small shopping plaza at the corner of Weldon and 17-92, sandwiched between Subway and Tutto Bene, an Italian eatery I will have to get to. When a coworker was kind enough to give me a spring roll from China Star I was intrigued. It was light, crispy, and delicious. So I stopped in for lunch yesterday, 9/16/2011. It's a small shop indistinguishable from many of its type by appearance. Four tables, small counter, visible kitchen. What sets it apart is the quality of the food. I ordered from the $5.95 lunch menu, selecting Szechuan Shrimp with Hot and Sour soup as my option (choice of soup, egg roll, or can of soda). I also ordered a Spring Roll with Shrimp as an extra. Total with tax, under eight dollars. The soup was light and fresh tasting, not that overcooked gelatinous mess I've had at too many other places. The shrimp were large and accompanied by very crisp veggies (broccoli, baby corn, pea pods, carrots, onions, mushrooms) in a light, flavorful, but not too spicy sauce. It was very yummy. The main dish was served with a giant helping of pork fried rice with peas, carrots, egg, all the things you want in a fried rice dish. This was not cafeteria-style steamtable Chinese food! It was fresh, flavorful and delicious. The spring roll was crisp, flaky, and savory, although until the last bite I was wondering where the shrimp was. I found one towards the end. If their other dishes are made with as much care and quality ingredients as the lunch I had, this place is a keeper. No ambience to speak of. May be best though of as a takeout delight. Try it if you're in the neighborhood.

The food was ready for pickup fast, and the staff were super friendly; however, when got back to the shop to eat our meals it was just a mess. The fried wontons for the soup were all stale, more like super stale and inedible. The wonton soup tasted good but the wonton noodles were gummy, very gross! Everyone complained about the fried rice. Not fresh, not fried properly and had large pieces of partially cooked onions in it. The General Tso's and Seseme chicken was drenched in sauce with no crispyness whatsoever. The beef in the beef and broccoli dish was chewy, but the broccoli was cooked perfectly, so that was probably cooked fresh. The egg rolls were mushy had no crispyness to them whatsoever and tasted like nothing. This was the first time in my life I could not eat an eggroll, went right in the trash with the rice. I thought well this meal was horrible but at least the fortune cookie will be good right, nope it was just as stale as the fried wontons. What has happened to this place??!! $77.31 for this meal and it all tasted like crap, most likely, leftovers they were trying to get rid of. The only fresh item was the broccoli. Definitely won't be back again.

Brandon's wife's family is from Laos. The restaurant has been open about 6 years. Why did it take me so long to come here?? It was my dad's birthday. So we went to lunch and shared the papaya salad with Thai style dressing, the summer rolls with extra peanut sauce, and he had the pad Thai w shrimp and I had the pad see ew with chicken. Dad had a Diet Coke (can) and I had a Thai coffee with extra ice. Everything we ordered came packaged in to go boxes- so if you don't finish- it's ok! It's ready to take home. But since we were eating there, they gave us two plates and our choice of chopsticks/fork/spoon etc. The food is made to order but still came out fast. Two to go orders were processed while we perused the menu and another to go came in while we were eating. A table for three came in during that time as well. So this place is probably more take out than dine in. The iced coffee was as predicted - sweet. But not overly sweet. The extra ice toned it down a bit. The summer rolls were huge. He was right to suggest an extra sauce for $0.50 because my dad pretty much used the entire sauce ramekin for himself. The papaya salad was great. Lightly dressed. Lots of shredded papaya with a chunk of cabbage in it, some stewed? Tomatoes. They have the option for Laotian dressing but I am not familiar with that fermented fish sauce? So I went with the Thai style which is regular fish sauce. I probably should have been more adventurous. We got the salad mild so no spice. For my dish I went with level one spice which is mild medium. You could definitely feel the heat after you swallowed the bite. I can't imagine what level 6 spice is like! Pad see ew was delicious. Those chunky soaked noodles in brown sauce with lots of big veggies. I got the chicken. Next time I'll do double meat. I like more meat. Dad had the pad thai w shrimp medium spice. It was definitely more spicy than mine but tolerable. Again- I would get double shrimp, but that's my opinion. We did not get dessert. We thought about ordering the beef waterfall- that will be my next dish. And they had some new specials! So I will definitely be back. I love the Christian atmosphere- not overwhelming and honestly you could go in for take out and not notice it. They do a great job with the food and customer service. In fact, they gave us a discount because my dad is a veteran and he was wearing his hat which reflected his service, and the owner noticed it. He thanked my dad for his service :) the discount was not expected and was a surprise! Wow! I would recommend this place. Family owned and operated. Food is great portion and delicious, made to order. I will be back.

The food here is always incredibly fresh, and you can tell everything is being made to order. You will wait a bit if you order at the counter (because they are making everything fresh like I mentioned). If you're in a hurry, order online for pickup. If you like drunken noodles, you absolutely need to order them here. And if you've never tried drunken noodles before, this is a great place to start. You can choose your spice level with every dish, from no spice all the way up to super spicy, and their spicy is actually really spicy. I've also tried the massaman (yellow curry), which is really tasty, even at the lowest spice level it has a little kick to it. The wonton soup is good, the pad thai is good, and honestly I firmly believe that anything on the menu is probably going to be good. The portions here are HUGE - they are really generous with the amount of food you get. Service has always been super friendly as well. You order at the counter and grab your food when it's ready. Prices are really good for how much food you get, and the quality is consistently great. This spot is a constant go-to for me

It appeared this was the first time they have participated in Magical Dining which became more evident as the night went on. We were greeted promptly and taken to a table that had balance issues. We were going to ask to move tables as it wasn't that busy yet but then a server came and added some napkins underneath to steady the table. The interior was interesting, half bar with two TVs playing sports and then half dining room. When the server came again, we ordered our 3-course meals and my mom and I each got a Thai Iced Tea. The Teas came and they were fine, maybe less sweet than I usually like. Then, it was over 45 minutes until we got our appetizers. I could see the servers running around but either their cook staff was understaffed or the restaurant was not expecting the big turnout for Magical Dining as this point all the tables in the restaurant were full. The appetizers were good, although all 3 came out at different times. The Cigar Rolls are like chicken egg rolls served with cucumber with the insides more like a samosa. The Coconut Shrimp had lots of coconut taste and was served with plum sauce. It was another while for our entrees to come out. My parents like the What The Duck although thought it was a bit more spicy than they like. I got the Fried Chicken with Peanut Sauce since the original choice I had made on the Magical Dining site (shrimp and pineapple fried rice) wasn't in the special menu at the restaurant. The portion was huge with 2 flattened chicken breasts along with broccoli, rice and peanut sauce. It was fine when dipped the sauce although a little dry without the sauce. Another wait and then finally our desserts arrived - Mango Sticky Rice for me and my dad and Fried Crepe with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce for my mom. My mom loved hers and finished the whole thing but I found it a bit plain. The Mango Sticky Rice was great although I wished there was more coconut milk in the bottom of the plate to sop up the rice and mango. I can't blame the servers for the food delays since they were all great. I think the restaurant was just overwhelmed. One more nit pick, there didn't seem to be particular plates to serve each dish in. We saw the table next to use get the Cigar Rolls in a cute basket while ours were served on a flat black plate. This restaurant has good food but probably not worth making a long drive for like we did.
