I eat here at least once a week up to 5 times. Most of the food is delicious to this 39 yo Vietnamese, especially if it had just come from the kitchen. The dishes I like, mei fun noodles, beef/chicken and broccoli, salt and pepper shrimp, chicken thigh skewers, and wonton soup, are well balanced in flavor and overall taste. The ambiance needs renovation, but the friendly service and valuable experience make up for it. Obviously, this is not the best Chinese restaurant I have ever been to because it is in such a small town; however, one might be pleasantly surprised at how much value creation this place offers. I actually loved this place, its absolutely dated on the inside with ugly old carpet HOWEVER the food is pretty good and my kids absolutely enjoyed it. I'm visiting my son here in Minot from California and I am Asian and know my Asian food. We decided to check out China Star. Not realizing it was a Buffett and there was a large selection of food. The sushi was simple and very fresh and the rice had a hint of vinegar -- which I love. I tried a small sample of a lot of the food and loved the Lo mein, Mongolian beef, salt and pepper shrimp, snowy shrimp, sesame balls, and fried dumplings, just to name a few and left very satisfied and full. This place has gotten a lot better than the last time I was there. I and my family kinda avoided this place for a few years due to their cooking of the food and the length of time that the food sat in the warmers. Some of the food would get soggy or dry and hard, but since then it's gotten better so far within only a few weeks of each other my family and I ate there a few times already. I was hungry when I arrived and left full. Absolutely wonderful, the best Chinese cusine I have ever had. My favorite dish they have is their chicken on a stick. Their chicken on a stick is deliciously inviting because of how it tastes. The atmosphere is perfectly pleasant every time that I visit this establishment, especially the waiters and waitresses. Stopped by here to get some take out to bring home. I was kinda skeptical due to the low rating but my grandma who was with me wanted to give it a shot. Well, this place is quite sad really..the food doesn't taste "bad" per se..it's just very bland. Fried rice: Slightly crunchy. Guess not enough water when they cooked the rice or perhaps it's a bit old? A few bits of veggies here and there. Oddly yellow in color? Not sure what that's about. Very bland. General Tso's chicken and Orange chicken: Didn't really taste freshly fried honestly. If it was cooked that day then it was probably early morning. Again, over bland. Orange chicken could use a sharper citrus flavor. General Tso's chicken advertised as spicy but there is zero spice. Beef broccoli: The beef in this dish and the Lo mein is bland. I don't think they marinate it before hand. Or if they do they seriously need to step up that marinade. Too much cornstarch, sauce was very goopy. Also the beef would be better if cut into thin slices as this makes them more tender. Beef Lo mein: noodles very soft, over cooked. Just a step above mushy. Again, no flavor. Just bland. Suggestions: All the sauces need to be revamped. Add some veggies to the lo mein or something. It's just like plain noodles with a few slices of beef. Staff: Staff was very pleasant. I'm very pleasantly surprised. At almost every buffet there are things that don't taste like you want them to, or not as good as other places. Sometimes you chalk it up to a different recipe or a cooks preference. This place has none of that. The variety is astonishing, more than a typical Chinese buffet. Add on the Mongolian grill and space efficient/modern interior and merely coming here is a smart idea. Each item I tried (and I tried a lot) was either exactly how it should be, or the best I've had. The crab rangoons in particular sent me right back to the first and best I'd ever tasted Each saucy chicken dish has its own flavor, the veggies are tender but with a bite. The noodles have good flavor but still drink up the sauces to make them even more unique. I can't truly say everything was perfect: the pork was a little hard, the Mongolian grilled plate was a little lacking in flavor, and the soups would benefit from better storage. This place is terrible. The food is slowly replenished and not very good. The food temperatures are never correct so you may have one warm bite and the next is cold. There was recently some kind of fire and they advertise newly remodeled but the only difference is they moved the counter to pay, took out a fountain and removed the Mongolian grill. The decor is the exact same. The food is pretty bad. There are several Asian places in Minot and this is the last one you should entertain. How it hasn't been inspected or had violations by health inspection teams boggles my mind. read more

Tried ordering online and my order was confirmed as submitted. I could see it had gone through on my bank account. Their website says to expect 30 minutes for delivery. I considered they might be busy or dealing with bad weather, so in reality I was expecting something more like 45 minutes to an hour. An hour went by, and nothing arrived. I tried calling them and no one responded. Gave it several minutes between each call and tried three more times, and no one responded. There was one reviewer that pegged the best description head on with amazing accuracy... "Emperor of Suck" First thing to ready myself for was the entire concept of "all-you-can-eat." Then there was comprehending the enormous selection of all manner of food -- and this buffet selection seemed to forget all about continental cuisine boundaries * mac and cheese, stroganoff, tortilla chips, boston creme pie... weird!) I recall standing there, eyes wide, plate in hand and incapable of moving. Eventually I began to roam up and down the aisle looking at all the options - everything glared at me in neon warning MSG MSG MSG! I glanced at the sushi in horror as my mind began to calculate the distance and time it would take to get the right selection of fish to make sushi -- I suppose california rolls would be fairly safe... maybe I settled on a bit of rice, a bit of the mongolian stir fry (really quite an ingenious addition to the less than mediocre buffet, and a few of the crab rangoon. Bleh, Bleh, and Bleh -- though I have to add that the peanutbutter chicken is rather curious - not awful - but sort of a trainwreck on the tongue - not sure if you should enjoy it or spit it out... hrmmm Redeeming qualities: Service, quick, polite - if somewhat a little impersonal. They deliver! Not only that BUT... they Deliver Faster than a Paper Dragon with a Firecracker Tail! If you have ever watched Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsey, this place would be one of the restaurants you would see. There are multiple facets to a restaurant and this place fails at all of them except maybe one... the food (and its OK but nothing to brag about. They say you can guess a lot about the food you are going to eat from the cleanliness of the restaurant and kitchen. If this is true, then do NOT eat here. During my last visit (within 2 weeks of this post), I noticed as I walked in the landscaping was dying, weeds were everywhere, and the building needed some TLC. Walking inside, the air feels hot and humid while a quick glance reveals chiping paint, holes in the wall, water stains, carpets that look like they haven't been cleaned in a while. Cleanliness is a huge issue here because it makes you wonder if they don't care how the building looks then how is the cooking completed. The food is OK as they have some good recipes but could use some significant improvement. The food has no soul and seems to be put together with no appreciation at all... even for a buffet. My friends remind me that it's not supposed to be a GREAT restaurant, but still there are some basics the establishment should have and they are far from that. I liked the buffet style layout - very much enjoyed their spare ribs and General Tso chicken. Also, the egg rolls were pretty tasty (nice & crisp). The atmosphere leaves a little something to be desired. While it is true that they have plenty of seating, the noise factor is a problem. So dont go there if you have a headache, or are about to get one. They have such good variety here, that most people will be able to find something they like. Families with children seem to enjoy this restaurant. I notice those kinds of things, as I used to do a lot of babysitting. read more
