2022-09-25. Established in 2016, the Troy Community Foundation issued non-profit organization…read morefocused on supporting citizen-driven initiatives. Formed by a group of residents and business owners, the foundation is responsible for many of the local events that are open to the public and not just the residents of the community. One such event is Troy Daze. I first heard about it last year in 2021, and surprisingly it was an event that ran despite COVID -19. Troy Daze runs for 4 consecutive days starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday. The dates vary slightly each year, but typically runs around mid September. Troy Daze is held at the north end of the Troy Civic Center by Philip J Huber Park. The event is a combination of a traveling Midway, and a community open house. Local businesses, schools, churches, and public services such as the Troy Police have tents erected to provide information and awareness of resources within the community, some offering free promotional items. Free shows, performances, and activities are organized to keep the little ones entertained while the older ones can partake in the midway rides if they so choose. There is also an international tent set up where you can watch performances of different cultures from all over the world. There is an admission of $5 per person, and kids 10 years of age or younger are free. The $5 fee is to help cover the costs of the free community organized events and shows. The Midway is completely separate. Midway tickets are $1.50 each, and most rides are 3-4 tickets. An all day wristband may also be purchased for $30 and entitles unlimited rides from noon to 9pm on the day off purchase. While there is no food provided, the midway does sell its typical fare of elephant ears, corn dogs, pretzels, and buckets of fries, etc. And if that isn't your cup of tea, there are also various food trucks and stalls to add variety. All in all, its a really nice event, and fun can be had by everyone. There is something to do or see for all ages. The librarians are so helpful and are able to find you content that you need and even order it from different systems so that you are able to get exactly what you need. There are so many tables and spaces to do work or read your next book. They also do so many events for the community and I would highly recommend checking it out !!

It hasn't stopped homeless people from using it to sleep and rest in. The library was built in the 1920's. It is a great looking building They have a 'Newspaper Room' that is accessed by a revolving door. Lots of fun. The interior is decorated in a style from the 1920's that is very interesting if you are interested in period pieces. There is an original water fountain there that still operates. The staff is very attentive, kind and knowledgeable. Be aware when visiting. It's a big city and this is a public space. It's worth the visit. Don't miss it.

The Penobscot building is a historical, gorgeous building located on Griswold. It's been around…read moresince 1905. It houses the Caucus Club, one of the last of Detroit's 40's-esque restaurants. I have an adoration for historical buildings -- all the stories and characters they contain, which is why I wanted to peek into the Penobscot. The interior has gold and marble detailings. The lobbies also have beautiful detailings and artwork that have been preserved. Today, in the building you'll find a post office, a nail salon, clothing boutiques, an apothecary, a place that sells fine wines -- definitely worth a browse. The building is named after the Native American tribe, Penobscot.

Youthville's offers programs for kids, developed by kids in such areas of art, education and computers. More specifically, they offer classes like So You Want To Be A DJ, which shows youth the basics of using turntables,a book club, archery, ceramics, and a graphic and animation class. In addition, Youthville has a recording studio, pool tables, and other innovative and entertaining activites for the cities youth. It's important to know that even though this is a recreation center for teens up to age 19, it is very heavily attended by middle school students. So older teens might not feel as comfortable. The kids seem to like the pool tables, snack bar and music production classes best. For adults who want to hang out and wait for their kid to finish class, there's a parent waiting room that's pretty nice.

This classic building is the Wayne County Building and is an architectural gem. It once served as…read morethe county's courthouse and administrative center, though those functions have since been moved elsewhere. Construction began in in 1897 and after much scandal and even a grand jury investigation, it completed in 1902. It features 18 courtrooms and 145 rooms that hosted public hearings and many county departments. It was designed by John and Arthur Scott who managed to blend Roman Baroque Revival, Beaux-Arts, and Neoclassical styles. The top of the building features a tower (totaling 247 feet tall) and four-horse chariots that represent both Victory and Progress. Other sculptures by J. Massey Rhind represent Law, Commerce, Agriculture and Mechanics. A lot has changed in Detroit since 1902 (Progress, maybe. Victory, not so much.) and after a number of renovations and updates, the building mostly sits vacant. Years ago the township office was small and located behind the fire station on 23 Mile off of Romeo Plank, therefore this huge building has come a long way and supplies many residents in Macomb Township, The building has two floors and the parking lot is in the back. When I enter the back door the layout is easy to find within view for the many departments. There are two departments on each side, Treasurer, Clerk, Assessing and Building. All the clerks are friendly, helpful and assist quickly for my visit. In the lobby there is our local newspaper, info about GFL waste services plus newsletters or updates on the township's board meetings, any township announcements or issues which are naturally all free. Next door is The Macomb Township Recreation Center which offers swimming, exercise areas and different health classes for a resident fee and also a non-resident fee. I really don't need a membership at that recreation building , Since I exercise at home and throughout my day and week + in the summer exercising by doing yard work then using my own back yard swimming pool.
