Everything at every table looked delicious, and the portions were generous but not over the top. We had the egg and seaweed soup -- good but wouldn't order again as the seaweed was very large and difficult to eat and a bit overpowering. The twice-cooked pork was great. A bit on the salty side and not as spicy as I anticipated, but full of flavor. We also ordered their version of kung-pow chicken, which was different than what I'm accustomed to and preferable. Good chunks of chicken, roasted peanuts and a tangy sauce. Be warned that like a lot of places here any rice will cost you extra, you won't just get white rice with your meal. Would definitely return here and try more if only I lived in London!

Finding properly spicy food in this country is a bit hit-or-miss to begin with, but to find really mouthwatering Szechuan cuisine (er... Sichuan?) has been a near impossibility until now. From the moment I walked into this modest-looking restaurant, I had a positive vibe. Whether it was the delicious scents wafting about, or the fact that the staff and various other patrons were speaking in Mandarin, I knew from the very start that I'd come to the right place. I'll be honest in saying that my least favourite dishes that we shared family-style (of course) were the ones recommended by the staff. Perhaps they were steering us toward things that Brits like more? But the fried potatoes were basically crispy Chinese french fries and the house dumplings, whilst they looked to be covered in delicious sauce, came out surprisingly flavourless to me. That said, everything else was superb. The smashed cucumbers went down a treat, the 'ants climbing a tree' (ma ee sang su) and mapo tofu both had that rich aromatic Szechuan peppercorn heat to them. And the twice-cooked pork dish served with steam buns is an absolute hunger slayer. Be prepared to order a couple bottles of Tsing Tao to balance out the heat in the dishes, but the mild tingling ma la sensation is a big part of the reason to come. I fully expect to work this into my regular rotation of dining destinations now that I know it's here!

The Chinatowns in the United States are suffering from the success of the early settlers. Those who came first worked hard, raised families and their children and grandchildren have moved into the suburbs. It was very difficult to decide which restaurant to try. Most of them offered the standard fare and we were hungry. One of the things we didn't care for is that most establishments have someone standing outside to greet you. Some were annoyingly aggressive (very Un-Chinese like), others simply ignored us by carrying on conversations with co-workers, others just made eye contact and smiled pleasantly. We like to look at the menus posted outside and detest someone breathing over us like the barkers at a strip club (not that I've been to one). The woman in front of this restaurant was stoic, yet friendly. She watched as we perused the menu and seemed somewhat surprised when we asked for a table for two. We were surprised when we followed her in and faced two flights of stairs. the dining room was on the second floor, toilets on the third. We later noticed an elevator but we're never informed of it's presence. We had been wondering how mobility challenges diners would get up and down. The dining room was medium in size, well lit and clean. At the back of the room appeared to be a pocket door that led to additional tables for private dining. After we were seated, it took a couple of minutes for someone to ask if we wanted tea. This is an important point in any Dim Sum meal for me. Many cultures will greet their guests in their native language first, then switch to English when necessary. Some will look at me and instead of asking me what type of tea I'd like to order, just serve house tea. Those places will get me asking in Cantonese what kind of tea it is because I hadn't selected yet. A lesson - Tea in a Chinese restaurant is usually served at no charge with a meal. However, with Dim Sum, there is a fee. Therefore, you can request your favorite Chinese tea. Some will cost more than others. My tea of choice is a blend called Gook Bo. Bo Lee is also known as Pu'Erh, a 'dry' black tea. Gook Fa is Chrysanthemum Flower, which adds a nice floral note. The two together have a nice flavor and when consumed hot, wash down any greasiness left behind by the food. The dim sum was spot on. The Har Kau was very well done. The Udon dish was excellent even though they weren't really Udon noodles (Japanese). Service was very good. Our tea pot was checked frequently and if our tea cups weren't full, staff quickly took care of that. We would definitely love to go there for a full ten-person dinner to try more flavors. Anyone game? We ordered some Dim Sim and a plate of noodles.

The beef itself was a bit dry, which took away from what should've been a juicier, more satisfying bite. Xi'an cuisine is known for its hand-pulled noodles and bold, spicy flavors, so I was hoping for a bit more richness on the beef component specifically. Overall, a decent quick bite. I'd go back and order the pork burger again, though I might branch out to something other than the beef noodles next time.

I've never had anything like it in a steamed bun before and I'd get it again every time. The custard bun was good but based on the menu photo I was expecting a much runnier filling and it didn't quite deliver on that. Kaya toast was a nice way to finish things off. Service is straightforward counter ordering. Nothing over the top but efficient and friendly. No complaints. Would I come back? Yeah, specifically for that chicken bun. A variety of tasty dishes to be shared and enjoyed alongside the duck. The bathrooms left something to be desired, but they worked. There is an upstairs that we did not see, but many people were ushered up there, and a large number of Chinese people came out while we were there, many speaking to the owner and thanking him for a wonderful meal. So, I think the spot is known by the locals as being good, and we felt that way with our experience.
