I love driving down the windy roads, it really feels like you are elsewhere. I walked up to the stand and there were ony a few other customers. On the stand they had a lot squash, herbs, tomatoes, figs, cucumbers, lettuce, oranges, among other goodies. I purchased their oranges, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and some figs (which didnt make into my bag- see more below). I spent about $19 Things to know: - Cash only or Venmo Pros: - You know the pros, delicous produce - Best cucumber I've ever tasted, like ever!!!! Cons: - Prices are not listed on the produce - No receipts are given at purchase unless you ask for them - Because no receipt/price listed, I don't actually know that I paid for the figs but they didn't make it into my bag. When I tried reaching out to them, I didn't get a response. Of course it's not about the figs but rather transperancy. I like knowing how much things are. I also like to know how much I've been charged for those things. We stopped by The Vegetable Shop at Chino Farm, because we were told it's the best and worth the extra dollar. There's something so nice about knowing that the vegetables and fruits on sale were grown on the land front of you and are properly in season where you are. This obviously limits variety and selection, but this isn't a grocery store - this is a farm stand! The tomato was so sweet! In addition to the seasonal produce, they had a few other items such as home-canned jam and shop merchandise. Prices are not cheap, because Chino grows and harvests high quality produce. Many do not realize the level of nutrients (and flavor) from produce is a fraction of what it was decades ago thanks to big farming and loss of regenerative agriculture. Many renowned SD chefs buy from Chino. It's expansion to "home chefs" is growing in popularity. Chinos produce is delicate, beautiful and well cared for. You see a wide variety of herbs, greens, vegetables, berries and fruits. Good luck not eating a whole pint of their Mara De Bois before you exit the small parking lot. The corn is sweetest I've ever had, also hard to not eat the whole bunch! Their ice cream is delicious- best vanilla I've had with a great balance of flavor and not too sweet. On weekends you score with Wayfarer breads and pastries available! Service is friendly and helpful but they are busy and trying to help the lines move along. Mara Des Bois strawberry was developed by a French breeding program. This variety produces small to medium fruit, and contains the highest flavor and fragrance of any everbearer. Drive past the expensive homes in Del Mar. Nestled between the mansions is Chino Farm. By the side of the road is The Vegetable Shop. You can buy honey and tea as well as baked goods from Wayfarer Bread on the weekends. I picked out a French baguette. I showed up a bit after 10am and it was still warm and crunchy on the outside. Center was soft and full of flavor. Delicious. Rivals my favorite french bakeries. Strawberries were $5 for a container. There were 2 varieties. There is a limit of 4 baskets as they only had a small quantity. Albion strawberries were juicy with sweet strawberry flavor. Similar to other farmer's market strawberries I've tried. Mara de Bois strawberries were small and came in a half sized package. Eat just one and let your mind and taste buds ponder the subtle flavors. While Williamson Produce strawberries hit you like a freight train with sweet strawberry flavor, these Mara de Bois strawberries are like a rose with layers of flavor to appreciate. One of the best strawberries I've eaten. The packages are small. Buy at least 3. I also picked up some zucchini. Fresh from the field and sun ripened they had delicious zucchini flavor. Came here for the ice cream and 100% worth it. For anyone SUPER confused about a creamery and a coffee shop existing here, it's all basically ran by the vegetable stand. If you come early, you'll find plenty of fresh produce that will literally make any dish you cook "farm-to-table". The staff is also amazing friendly and helpful. If you ever need something or looking for something, don't be afraid to ask. As far as the ice cream, as of today (Feb 18, 2023), their strawberry ice cream is approximately $20. Not really sure what forms of payment they accept but I paid via Venmo. It's is quite a drive and they will give you a small ice pack for your ice cream BUT I suggest bring an insulated cooler bag and extra ice packs to make sure your precious ice cream doesn't melt. Not sure if it's also lactose friendly but I literally survived without having to take lactaid and the texture tells me it's more gelato and not heavily milk based. I'd ask just to make sure but I just YOLO'd because why not? 8/10 recommend read more

Eating around Southern California you always hear the local restaurants boasting about using the fresh vegetables and fruits from Chino Farms. The wife and I were in the area and decided to hit up Chino Farms and see what it was all about. They had a cute little shed selling their veggies and fruits and it wasn't too expensive. We couldn't tour the farm itself but we bought ourselves some great looking strawberries, shishito peppers and carrots. If it is anything like what we eat at the restaurants it will taste sweet and fabulous. We didn't realize it was cash only or we would have bought more! Since it was the weekend, they also had some pastries and bread from Wayfarer as well. We're a huge fan of Wayfarer's breads and are so glad to find a spot to get them that's closer to us rather than driving down to La Jolla. Came here for pastry chef Natasha Pickowicz's SD installment of Never-Ending Taste, which was really fun and my first time visiting Chino Farms after hearing good things about it over the years. It is exactly what you think it is, a small roadside stand in the middle of Rancho Santa Fe near the Morgan Run Resort. First of all, Natasha's food was absolutely delicious and made with all CF ingredients. While I was there, I bought golden beets, golden raspberries, French strawberries, and raspberries. The berries were all very fresh and delicious (esp the strawberries), unfortunately, I forgot that farm-fresh, delicate berries do not keep the best so I had to freeze some of the raspberries for later. It's definitely some of the best ice cream you can buy since you really taste the fruit they put into making it. 4 stars though because they increased prices :( 20-25 dollars for a pint is pretty steep. Super friendly employees provided excellent customer service. The selections today were limited though I walked away w baby lettuce, garlic, fava beans and zuchinni. We've been to quite a few farm stands in the San Diego area. Actually the one we used to frequent the most is up the road from this one. We started coming to the vegetable stand because the other one seemed to have less and less actual produce. Chino farms seriously has the best produce and variety I've seen at any of the farm stands. Everything always looks very nice and fresh. It also almost always tastes great. If they have French strawberries in season you need to get them. You need to. No questions. You must do this. Now I will say that you have to be prepared to spend a pretty penny. This place is not cheap. But for the quality and variety of produce I would definitely says it's worth it. I also have never experienced any rudeness or attitude. I've only experienced good service but I will say that I have noticed impatience from the workers (but sometimes it's deserved. Lol) read more

Gem of a little vegetable shop nestled in an idyllic location surrounded by mountains, narrow winding roads and huge palm trees. To get such produce backed by the beauty of the place right in the heart of the city is a blessing indeed. Lots of variety of amazing vegetables...some of them you will probably see only here or in some select farmers market. I was instantly a fan of the sprouting cauliflower which was like a mini cauliflower and the small artichokes...We also got some mini Brussels sprouts - which when I roasted them ,were the best Brussels sprouts ever. The young garlic was also so good. The people there are so nice and helpful and also knowledgable about the produce. I will be back for sure ... just that they are very very pricey !!! read more

Kind of a sad little place to have in our community. I've purchased some tasty stuff here over the years, looking the other way regarding their ridiculous prices. The third generation of this family is now selling $20-25/pint ice cream) so the tendency to ripoff people is in the DNA. No or few prices are displayed. Their hours are pretty limited. I took a photo of the place and it has a sad look of a produce stand that has fallen on hard times...which is not at all the case...the family is wealthy, both in talent and funds. Having gotten used to some really friendly local farmer's markets in Del Mar and Honolulu, this place makes such a poor comparison. I think they could freshen the place up (get a produce decorator if you need to...it's Rancho Santa Fe!) re-pave the small lot, provide a handicapped space, and hire some happy young people. Reduce prices to realistic levels by dividing by a factor of 2. I understand this is speciality stuff but it's not bitcoin! You're our local farmers and I wanna love you, but make it easier to do so. Improve the "ambiance" of this local farm location and make us as happy as your vegetables! read more

I don't usually write reviews, but this tis time I went there to get the best produce since I heard how good it is, but the service and the product quality was far from desired. For the price they charged one should expect at least good service and quality of the product. It's a tomatoes season right now, so you would expect good taste tomatoes for $6 dollars a pound. It was very mediocre, and Jimbo's store 5 minutes away have better taste and cheaper tomatoes. They did have a good herbs, so I think they deserve 1 star. read more

I would've been better off if I never knew about this place. Now, when I think of Chino Farms, I get that faraway look; sort of a thousand-yard stare with a sense of loss thrown in. If you ever happen to see me like this and ask what's wrong, I'd snap out of my reverie, look at you with mournful eyes and mumble a nearly unintelligible "strawberry". You see, I learned of this place from another Yelper, CGFan, who told us about a farm in the rolling hills of Rancho Santa Fe; a farm run by Japanese-Americans, the Chino family. I had never heard of that japanese surname before, but there it was, written in japanese characters on the workers' T-shirts. This Chino family grows fruits and vegetables coveted by restaurants like Spago and Chez Panisse - I WANT TO EAT THERE ONE DAY!!!! *ahem* sorry - which, I heard, also happen to be the only two restaurants to which this farm will make deliveries. All the rest have to either make the drive or depend on foragers to report in and then make the purchases. That's got to say something. Chino Farms and their roadside stand called "The Vegetable Shop" are seemingly located in the middle of nowhere, but judging by some of their customers, this place is definitely on someone's map. Where else do you see a european sports sedan pull into a dirt lot with no hesitation? For all it's apparent fame, The Vegetable Shop is a modest place, simple and no-nonsense; you walk up and there's produce displayed for you to touch. Beautiful produce! (but with no posted prices) I read other reviews and this scared me. So, my wife and I decided, what the hell, it's our mini-honeymoon, so we bought their corn, purple cauliflower, purple negi (Japanese green onion), this red-leafed lettuce, and a box of strawberries, and the price wasn't as horrendous as I thought it would be! We put our organic booty into an insulated TJ's bag, but before closing it we each sampled a strawberry. Oh my GOD!! It was so good; sweet, with a nice strawberry taste and just slightly tart. No wonder... In the next few days, prepared by my MIL, we had the corn, which was delicious; sweet and juicy (butter would only be an insult). We had some of the cauliflower which had none of the store bought's funky aroma, but had a very slight bite to it; almost spicy. The purple negi is just green onions when cooked in some japanese dish, to be perfectly honest, but back at the stand it had a very nice green onion aroma that leaned toward the sweeter side. Incredible. Oh, and the strawberries! After a couple of days back home I thought of how I wanted to have some. That is when I found out my MIL ate them all. All of them. Every... single... one... And come to think of it, I don't remember eating the lettuce!! What the hell? Back at the stand, I noticed how light and delicate it was, almost translucent, like some sea creature swaying in a soft ocean current except it's something I would actually put into my mouth. I had never seen lettuce like this and was really looking forward to seeing this on a plate back home!! HEY!! *sigh* Oh well. Another "Must Visit" place whenever we're down in San Diego County... Don't let the modest stand fool you. This is high quality stuff, well worth the price if you can afford it, and judging by the cars in their dirt parking area, a lot of locals can! If anything, come down and buy something. The stand is relatively easy to find and the drive inland from the I-5 or Coast 101 Highway is very nice. Spoil yourself! I love Chino Farms!!! I was just there meeting a friend and it was a such a lovely day! I look at it as a nice treat to give myself once in a while. For those people who are complaining about the prices, yea its expensive, they are even higher than WholeFoods but its worth it! Some of the organic veggies and fruits in Wholefoods are actually from Chino Farms but they are not fresh, they're just garbage compare to the ones in Chino Farm where they are picked the very same day. Chino Farm is the local mecca for San Diego's top chefs, where my favorite local, organic restaurants get their ingredients and where a lot of my fav markets like Jimbos, OB Peoples, and Wholefoods get their produce from. Chino Farms is also a great, fun place for food lovers like moi, nibbling on samples, visiting friends, and buying produce from the farm stand, and the inevitable subject of visiting food writers. To my mind, it's a revolving art gallery of edible nature! The beauty of each individual piece of produce is fleeting but stunning while it lasts. Everyone who visits marvels over the strawberries. When I was there, the stand had three types of strawberries: the large regular berries, smaller Mara de Bois berries and teeny tiny seductive Alpines, also called fraises des bois (french berries). I bought a pint of the large strawberries, which were just as sweet and juicy as they should be and those tiny French strawberries are my favorite...so sweet! Strawberries may be the most talked about item at Chino Farm but they sell a large selection of greens, herbs, root vegetables and, well, so much more in virtually every garish color you could imagine with the colorful array of cauliflower on display. Nearby was an equally outrageous collection of multicolor carrots and radishes. Just talking about Chino Farm right now makes me all giddy and excited inside! Yes, we have an ever growing number of farmers markets but not everything is organic like Chino Farms! You have to look for organic farmer signs posted at each booth but with Chino Farm you dont have to worry about that. Farmers markets are my regular haunts esp the ones in Del mar, Ocean Beach, and Hillcrest, but if you do have a chance, stop by Chino Farm, you're in for a real treat! read more

I had read about this place in Jeffrey Steingarten's book and googled it before my next trip to L.A. Once there, I loaded my parents, who also love to eat, into the SUV (I needed the bigger car for the amount of produce I knew I would want) drove south 2 hours to Encinitas, loaded up the back, and drove straight back home to eat. Actually, it was more like, we drove up the little road towards the produce stand, started smelling the amazing strawberries a block away, drove even faster towards the smell, parked the car, and stood in line gaping at the amazing variety of fruits and vegetables (15 types of tomatoes! Pink, yellow, purple, white, red, fushcia, magenta, and yes, even orange carrots! The same for beets! 30 types of melons! Berries galore! Herbs! Corn! Asian vegetables! Free plums hanging off the tree in the parking lot! Things they don't sell in Hawaii where we live!). When it was our turn to buy (you get your own person that walks you down the line, helping you), me, my mom, and my dad, couldn't stop excitedly yelling out what we wanted at the poor boy, sometimes all at once. I think he was used to it because he did great. When we got to the end of the line, he rang us up and we bought so much, the bill was $96.00!!! On the way to the car, we started tearing into the tiny teardrop yellow and red tomatoes in a basket, marvelling at their sweetness as they burst in our mouths. We also polished off a basket of fraises des bois, tiny, almost effervescent, UNBELIEVABLY scented wild European forest strawberries that were like ambrosia. And the car was only a few meters away. We opened the trunk, unloaded all the bags, closed the door, turned around and marched right back into line again. I think we ended up spending about $200.00, but those strawberries were worth it. Everyone in line raved about the corn, but we thought Kahuku corn in Hawaii is much sweeter. Forget about the Asian veggies--they weren't that great. But those strawberries . . . Wow! I had first seen this place mentioned on the menu at George's California Modern in La Jolla several years ago as the purveyor of much of the produce they served - which, not coincidentally, was amazing, down to the garnishes in the cocktails at the bar. Then I saw the Saveur article. So on my recent work trip to La Jolla, I made a detour to RSF to stop at the Chino Farm stand. And boy I am I glad I did! My visit in early July was apparently great timing, as they had amazing cherry tomatoes (the orange ones had a perfect blend of sugar and acid - ate the entire pint like candy that afternoon) and the most gorgeous strawberries I've ever seen and eaten outside of France. They disappeared that afternoon, as well. The pluots were pretty amazing, too. I wanted to buy everything in sight - the peppers, the melons (all heirloom varieties that I am sure were orgasmic), and other veggies all looked spectacular. Alas, no kitchen to which to bring them back. The young woman who helped me was very sweet, made great suggestions and that, coupled with the simply amazing produce, made the trip up to RSF entirely worthwhile. If you go on Sunday, there is a really nice little farmer's market in RSF at the Del Rayo Village Center you can hit on the way back to the I-5. Very good indy coffee place there, too. read more

Apparently, one of our local secrets is out. Technically, the produce stand is called the "Vegetable Shop". But everyone knows it by the family's name - "Chino". It's true, Chino Farm sells beautiful heirloom produce - white corn, white carrots, okra, quartz tomatoes and rossa lunga di firenze (beautiful onions that are similar to shallots), and the best strawberries you'll ever taste. Prices aren't listed; however, they're no different than other specialty produce stores where quality has its premium.
